My family and I had breakfast at the Studio Grill for breakfast while on a short trip to Kalamazoo. The restaurant is small and does not look like much from the outside, but they serve a great breakfast. My sons ordered pancakes and my wife and I ordered omelettes. More than their burgers, I absolutely love their breakfast/brunch options. The omelettes are fluffy, with a nice variety, their pancakes come in large portions, and ingredients are all fresh. Service is absolutely top-notch. There is usually a wait, particularly on the weekends, but they will happily come retrieve you from outside or the next-door bookstore once you jot your name down. We will definitely be coming back to try more of their brunch line-up. read more

Being our first time to Kalamazoo, we wanted to go to a local eatery that knocked our foodie socks off. To be fair, we are a bit of food snobs, but try to be fair on critiques. To begin with the management/staff are quite courteous and friendly. Couldn't be nicer! Secondly, the pancakes our granddaughter ordered were phenomenal. 10/10. It is their grandma's recipe. The burgers we ordered were average at best. I have had many a burger that were tastier. We tried the rusty nail and the avocado burger. The "stuffed" concept appeared to be toppings between two patties. The horrific end to the meal was the ice cream. Please don't ruin your meal with this ending. The 2 flavors we tried were the raspberry chocolate and the chocolate pretzel. They were terribly grainy, like they went through a process of melting and refreezing... or something. Maybe it was aged dairy from aged beef. read more

Have been coming here for breakfast for years.....great food, and great wait staff. They claim, and have heard, that their burgers are fantastic...never tried them as I have only had breakfast. Small, not much seating, but you are in and out quickly. Omelet tea very good, and must get pancakes also. Owner always available walking around talking to customers. Ate here while on vacation and staying at the Radisson. Casual cafe vibe with lots of art on the walls. Great menu for breakfast and low prices. We had biscuits and gravy (ask if you don't see them on the menu) and the 5 Alarm omelette (added mushrooms). Omelette came with american fries and toast. Biscuits and gravy didn't come with anything, but you could add things if you wanted for an additional cost. Both meals were outstanding. Homemade bread was used for the toast (and I think homemade jam). Decent coffee, but not remarkable (they have a full espresso drink menu, too). Total was $14.00 without tip. Cheap! Next time I'm all over the Hawaiian French toast. Owner came out of the kitchen to check on all the tables, which adds some points. The only possible fault I could possibly think of is that I added mushrooms to my omelette and they were canned, but I can deal with that in an otherwise great breakfast. Our friends are traveling to Kzoo in the spring and we are going to recommend they eat breakfast here. read more

Since returning to my beloved hometown, after a 20-yr hiatus, I've been on the quest to find some new favorites in the restaurant category. Let me say that the Studio Grill fits the bill!! In for breakfast on a weekday, I threw caution to the wind and asked the waiter to bring me his favorite dish. I was presented with a plate of 3 blueberry muffin pancakes along with the suggestion to hold off on the syrup so that I could take in all of their golden deliciousness. I took a bite, and OMG - so good, so comforting! The blueberries were plump and plentiful, accompanied by what I'm pretty sure were mini white-chocolate chips. The combo worked, though the chips weren't soft and so there was a bit of a crunch to the pancakes (a minor deduction). Flavor-wise, all was good. I will be bringing the fam in to continue to try the other items on the menu for sure! Pricing is fair for Kalamazoo, but better than good when the 20% discount for students is utilized. So yes, I feel confident of my 4-star rating based on pancakes alone. The vibe here is chill and the commentary from the police officers enjoying their meal made for an interesting start to my day. Server said it was a 10 minute wait and told us to wait next door in a crowded bookstore. 30 minutes goes by and we go back and it's the same story, another 10 minute wait... 15 more minutes goes by in the crowed bookstore they told us to wait in and still nothing. Kind of hard to miss, but worth seeking out. Solid breakfast and lunch spot in downtown. Always served quickly and the food is great! Don't be afraid to try some of their off-the-wall menu items. The policy is, if you don't like what's on your plate, the restaurant will pay for it. I overheard the manager saying that to a table in front of me when one of the guys wasn't sure about trying the burger with peanut butter on it. He did and liked it. SO delicious. We were staying at the Radisson during a recent trip to KZoo and this place is perfectly located right down the block. Great diner feel, lots of regulars (easy to tell!), and comforting and eclectic menu. When I'm snagging a diner-ish breakfast, I want biscuits and gravy - and it didn't disappoint. Over easy eggs were perfectly cooked, and bacon was crispy. Everyone at the table was happy with their meals -and with our great server- and the price was right. It was lunch time on my drive from Detroit to Chicago. It would have been easy to stop at a fast food joint and get something quick (but not very tasty) and be on my way. I couldn't do that again so I headed to downtown Kalamazoo. I Googled 'lunch spots' and the Studio Grill was the first restaurant to pop up. I was greeted warmly by the staff and settled into a table in the window. When I opened the menu I was shocked by all of the burger options and had troubled deciding which to order. I opted for the Spicy and Sweet Pineapple Burger. 7 oz of fresh beef, stuffed with pepperjack cheese and topped with serrano pepper sauce, grilled pineapple, and more pepperjack cheese. I ordered it cooked medium and that's exactly what I got. The meat was tasty, seasoned correctly and very juicy. I couldn't have asked for a better burger. I plan to make this a 'go to' place on my drive. I'll never settle for a bad roadside meal again. read more

My parents have loved this place forever, and I was finally able to stop in for lunch this past week. I had a fried chicken wrap; delicious chicken, a great chipotle ranch sauce with cheese and a ton of fresh veggies. The wrap had a great crunch to it, and the flavor was great. The fries that came with it were so fantastic, exactly as another reviewer describes them, I would go back for those alone. The service was timely and friendly, and one of the owners came out to check on us while we were there, as well. Very good! We went to brunch on a Saturday morning and couldn't find anywhere without a line until we got here. We got seated pretty quickly and felt pretty cozy. The food was good except my scrambled eggs were a little over cooked and a little brown. My boyfriends sausage had bacon pieces on it so they may not clean their grill frequently. The best burger joint I've been to in quite some time. Fried egg on a burger always hits the spot! The Outlaw with jalapeños stuffed into the meat was the real deal. My husband and I love Studio Grill. We live about 30 minutes away and whenever we pass through downtown Kalamazoo, we make it a point to stop for breakfast or lunch. The menu features award-winning hamburgers with the "toppings" stuffed inside as well as sandwiches, wraps, omelets, salads and more. Each menu item has been created by the owners who put a lot of time into developing unusual and delicious combinations of ingredients. The price is right as well, in fact, it's a favorite for Western Michigan University students. On my last visit, I had the Studio Veggie Wrap, a vegan black bean burger lettuce, tomato, feta cheese, and homemade bruschetta. The black bean burger is supplied by locally owned Ope's and is the best I've tasted, moist and delicious. Every time I've been there, the owner is on site seating people, delivering orders, cleaning tables or cooking. He always stops by to ask about my meal and this visit was no exception. Studio Grill is a small place with red checkered table clothes and friendly servers. During peak meal times, expect a short wait (tables turn quickly). As I said, small place, so you'll need to wait outside - or leave your name with the host and go next door to browse the titles at the Michigan News Agency, an eclectic shop that's been in business since 1947. The SC host will come and get you when your table is ready. If you're ever in Kalamazoo for breakfast or lunch check it out. You'll be glad you did! read more

I want to start off by mentioning that the owner and staff are phenomenal. Just great people. I WANT to write a glowing review, but I simply cannot. Personally, every time I've been here I've thought the food was ok. No major complaints. Unfortunately my poor husband has YET to enjoy a meal here. Twice he's ordered a burger, as it is what they're known for outside of their breakfast brunches, and twice the owner has had to give him a "try again" card to hopefully fulfill the promise of a good meal. First time he ordered the burger with a fried egg. He asked for the egg to be over-hard and it came to the table dripping with yoke. I mean just slathered in it. He cannot stomach egg yoke so he asked for it to taken back. Not for a recook, just removed from the table as it was pretty off-putting for him. I continued to eat my food with him sipping his water watching me try to enjoy my meal without him. Owner came to ask how we were doing and saw my husband without food. Gave us a card to come try again another time...on the house. That was very nice. Months, almost a year goes by, that card sat in my wallet. We decide to try again. He ordered the burger with chili thinking it will be better this time around with no egg in sight. Burger arrives to the table with what I can only call a can of stewed tomatoes dumped upon my husband's burger. Not chili...just stewed tomatoes. Guess who is not a fan of tomatoes? Well...deja vu, a similar scene ensues. I am left eating my meal with my poor husband staring at me sipping his water while his burger is ushered away. He's not mad or upset...he is almost amused. He just can't catch a break at this place, I guess. The owner and staff are apologetic and, luckily, don't seem to remember us from a while back with almost the same situation as before. (I ordered breakfast that time around) So, I guess I will have to make my visits to this restaurant sans husband as he seems to not have good luck ordering here. This place is one of the many things I miss since I moved from Kalamazoo. I think I only tried half the stuffed burgers on the menu because I would usually reorder some of the ones I had previously since they were so damn good. I'm a huge fan of burgers and the fact that this place offers a burger with nearly everything you can imagine (blueberries, peanut butter, etc.), you literally cannot order something bad. It's impossible. The sweet potato fries are super delicious. I ordered a wrap (chicken avocado I believe) a few times when I was in the mood for it and it was also delicious. Craig, the owner, makes a strong point to check in on every person, which I think is wonderful, and each of the servers I had were all extremely nice, which can be hard to keep up working in a restaurant when its busy. The day I returned to pack my things and move, I made a point to bring my mom here, and she loved it as much as I have. As a former frequent visitor, I truly hope this place stays in business for many more years to come! read more
