This review is so long overdue! I have so many memories here dating back to when it was called Starline and it was 18 and over. Fast forward to now, it has been renamed to Strummer's but it still possesses the same concept except it's 21 and over now. I've seen cover bands here, rock bands and I've come to boogie for their themed nights like 70s night 80s night ,90s night and dark wave. The cover charge is usually five dollars. There's two bars, one adjacent to the dance floor and then the main bar with booths and seating. They do offer food as well like $5 pizza slices, Mozz, stocks, sliders and your typical bar food fare. The crowd ranges here from Young 21-year-olds to people in their 50s and 60s. It kind of depends on the theme of the night. For example, if you come on Bad Bunny night, it's all youngsters in their 20s. If you come for a disco night or 80s night, then it'll be a wider range. Security is tight and they do a good job of repelling any type of drama because it is notorious that fights breakout in the Tower, but they keep all that drama at bay here. You can always expect to have a good time especially with a group of friends. I definitely recommend checking them out and looking at their lineup to see what appeals to you. read more

I went here for a concert and it was my first time in Fresno,CA. I enjoyed this smaller more local venue. Honestly, the only thing I wished is if they would have allowed alcohol onto the main floor but I realize that this event may have not been able to. Cool venue that is split into 2 halves. First half is where the shows are...a long rectangular concrete slab of a room. The other room is a bar with seating, some food, and an outdoor bar/smoking section. The bar area is pretty nice and everyone working there was pretty cool for the show I was there to see. The room where the show is too small to hear any band well. It was cool to SEE the Melvins in Fresno, but man the acoustics were just loud and garbled. Look, if a band is coming to town I want to see...I won't pass up an opportunity to see them. Keep seeing shows here to make sure more bands come. read more

Strummer's is D I V E Y. I am never in Fresno, but Bandalos Chinos' made a stop at Strummer's during their first US tour, so it had to be done! This venue is tiny, tiny. It's split into two sides. One side has a large bar with booths and a semi-private area with another small bar and the other side of the venue has the stage and another bar. I'd say the side with the stage could maaaaybe fit 250 people. They are located in the oh, so, trendy tower district behind a dollar tree and around the corner from Sequoia brewing. Parking isn't an issue around here, well not on a Tuesday night anyway. Lol Security and check-in were a breeze. Doors opened at 7PM, there was a small line to get in. I waited closer to 7:30PM, right before the opener started and there was no line. They check your bags, do a quick metal detector scan, check IDs, give you a wristband, scan ticket and boom, you're in. They had a small merch table at this show and both bars open. White claws and NA brews were $7 on the stage side and $6 on the booth side. This is the type of venue where you can't take your drinks outside of the bar area. It was gated off and had a security guard monitoring that you weren't taking your drinks out on the floor. Not a fan, but I get it. Bathrooms are available on both sides. They block the bathrooms on the stage side before and after the show because the bands walk through there to get backstage. Sound check booth is near the entrance, like very out in the open, it was a little weird. The acoustics in here suck ass. The opener had drums on a track, which were uncomfortably loud, so you could barely hear her vocals. This was after a few attempts of the band telling the sound people to adjust it. They were having some issues. The main band didn't seem to have any sound issues, but they had a full band and louder crowd, so it could have just been masked with loudness. Security clears out the venue pretty quick, unless you are purchasing merch. They were inviting everyone to the other side of the space for a lil Tuesday night karaoke. Moral of the story, it was an easy concert day. Parking is easy, no waiting in lines, tickets were cheap, fees were minimal, and drinks were cheap. I would come here again for some smaller indie bands, but this spot is no well-oiled machine. read more

A great venue for alternative music! I haven't been there recently, but I saw The Melvins a few years back and I can think of only one other venue in town that would host a band of their genre and although larger it is farther away from where I live! The bar and servers are awesome and fit right in with the scene! Last time I dropped in for a beer the bartender was wearing a Black Flag T-Shirt and didn't mind having a convo w/this OG punker! Semi-enclosed outdoor space next to bar is a bonus for smokers and great for people watching! It's in Fresno's famed Tower District, so close to several eateries if you need to put a bottom on it before getting your drink on! A dive bar with class!!! read more

I had never known this place existed if it was not because I won tickets. It was 80's night and we went to enjoy some drinks and the music. We got there around 9:00 pm just in time. There was Not a lot of people yet and we Found a place to sit down. We went and order us some margaritas. They have different drinks with their original name. They have beer and wine as well. We ordered some pizza too to accompany our drinks and not to get to drunk. I don't drink that often but the drinks don't make me drunk. That's a good thing. The DJ was playing music from the 80's. It was nice. There were a lot of young people. They all were having a good time. We were just enjoying the music and having a good time. I don't think I am coming back. Went to Strummers with a group of friends for Gimme Gimme Disco Night. We had purchased our tickets online, and when we got there, entering was smooth, and we received wristbands. I appreciated the security check upon entering, and the security guards throughout were friendly and on too of things. A drink had spilled near the dance floor, and they made sure to quickly grab towels and get it dried up fast. The disco ball, DJ, and vibe from the crowd was great! We stayed for about 2 hours. Bartender was efficient, cordial, and my drinks were tasty! Giving the restroom and little more refreshing and more frequent upkeep could help that final star come to life! read more

Heard great things, left disenchanted. Went to Gimme Gimme Disco Night and it was a blast just dancing with a big old disco ball and loud retro music One of the security guards there was on a power trip or something though. When me and my boyfriend went to the bar area to grab drinks for a break, the security guard, a girl with a long braid, told him to make sure I drink a lot of water. Afterwards, she kicked out my friend just because she got sick and threw up in the bathroom. Meanwhile, when all of us were outside, an actual fight almost broke out outside. I get it, if people are acting all aggro then go ahead and make sure they're not around the rest of the patrons. But my friend didn't even do anything aggressive or wasn't harming anyone. Had an unfortunate thing happened when visiting this bar. They don't allow pocket knives or any kind of water bottle containers, which is fine however, when we went to retrieve our items, they did not return our water bottle to us.. one of the employees must have kept it for themselves, which is a terrible thing to do. read more

Updated review for May 27 2022 visit. Strummers will be the place to be this summer-the air conditioning in the bar is awesome! And if you need to warm up they have a front patio bar too ! Awesome service throughout our visit. We actually came in to order food from Libelula's at Strummers but were about an hour early for dinner service to start so we enjoyed a couple of drinks at the bar while watching a Giants game. Great vibe, decor, and location in Tower-I hope more investment is made on this street so Strummers and Livingstones can thrive. Highly recommend ordering from Libelula, you can enjoy your meal at the bar and the service from the kitchen is great. Will be back soon. read more

We had an awesome night here at Strummers! I took the kids to see The Aquabats! and it was the best time! Doors opened at 6 and show started at 7. We got there at 6 so it was easy to get in, no line. They have to search everyone of course. If you're not drinking they'll mark your hands with a big X so they don't let you into the bar area. Entry was easy with our tickets. I didn't even have to show them on my phone. They searched my last name and checked us all in. Mobile ticket is the way to go! It's a divey bar/venue/club. They had one room with the band merch and there are a few tables in there. Then there's a bigger room with the stage and bar area. The bar area is fenced off with security checking for a wrist band at the entrance. When the first band started playing some of my kids weren't ready for how loud it was gona be. Then in the nick of time a security came by and gave us ear plugs! That was so rad and we were thankful. During the show the mic kept going out and the musicians were getting frustrated (I think) but I was just happy to be there! Me and the kids (ages 11,10, 8 and 5) had the best night ever! I love finding out that my favorite artists are performing here. People love to complain that this venue is small BUT they fail to realize that the conerts are more intimate with a smaller room/crowd. Stage is fairly big. They're not too strict on rules and they have ACs above and around you for when it gets hot from dancing and moshing. read more

Every time I come here, I think, we're too damn old for this place (47&46) BUT every night/event we come to, it's a mixed diverse crowd and we're not actually out of place. On to the venue: there's a kind of patio area with a separate bar that we haven't been to yet - I think cause you can't really hear the music from there. As you go in, there's the main bar with bar stools, a couple tables in the middle of the big room and booths along the west wall. There's a desk where they take orders for bar-type food. This visit we had the vegan taquitos and wings. The bar let us add our food order to our drink table which we thought was really cool; thanks! But, for the most part, the staff at this bar are not attentive. The next room is even bigger with another full bar where their attention is more evenly distributed. My only complaint is that this room is huge but the only seats are mainly cushioned "benches" along the wall with some tables and a few cocktail tables toward the bar. I wish they'd put out more tables. Anyway, the music is why you come to Strummer's and that's where they get their stars. And those vegan taquitos. read more

I've been coming to Strummer's for over 15 years and that's because I love everything about it... the atmosphere is great and the service is friendly. Typical events have strict security and protocols like the bar section is usually gated off and alcohol isn't allowed past a certain point. We went last night for an all ages Fortunate Youth concert and decided to bring our 5th graders and was expecting the same type of security. That night, we even connected with a woman who said she works at Strummer's and she also brought kids- a 5th and 2nd grader. This time though, the gate was moved and alcohol was flowing onto the concert floor area. There was one fight directly behind us, which security didn't break up, it was separated by patrons. A woman I didn't know shielded me and the kids from the fight with her body and outstretched arms until it was quickly broken up stating she "was a mom" .... enough said... she was instinctually protecting the children. Besides that incident the staff outside checking us in was extremely friendly and funny and welcoming to a family, as was the bartender who sold me only bottled waters. While the incident was atypical, and overall it felt safe, we just think a little more could have been done to prevent alcohol and it's problems and litter from going out to the concert area. We WILL RETURN for concerts, but unlikely to bring the kids again anytime soon. read more

On Dec. 6th, I drove from Los Angeles to attend Gimme Gimme Disco again. The security was very courteous to me. I got there about 30 minutes prior to the event. It started out very slow before 9:30 (time of show), once 9:30 hit, the dance floor was 75% packed. The DJ (Jules) was outstanding last night! She played 15 ABBA songs including The Winner Takes It All and If It Wasn't For the Nights, she forgot Waterloo though. The set list for the ABBA songs- Abba Medley by Stars on 45, Angel Eyes, Chiquitita, Dancing Queen, Fernando, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Honey Honey (2x), If It Wasn't For the Nights, Lay All Your Love On Me, Mamma Mia, Money Money Money, SOS, Super Trouper, Take A Chance on Me, Take A Chance On Me, The Winner Takes It All. She also played a lot of DISCO hits from the 1970's and 1980's including two modern songs, Hot to Go and Murder on the Dance Floor. I can say that this was worth the drive. I frequent Gimme Gimme Disco events as far as Austin, Texas. I can't wait to return to this venue. Strummer's has a great floor which is slick and it worked with my dance sneakers. My wife had to go to the bathroom. Stood by the bathroom with her drink. Security told me I couldn't wait by the bathroom. There is an open back door with no staff, no cameras, no doors on the bathroom, drunk kids everywhere, people lurking around; not a super safe feeling vibe. Told the security very politely I had to wait for my wife. Second security guard comes and SCREAMS at me that I have to leave the event. Again very politely I said I was sorry but she is expecting me to be waiting for her so I'm gonna be waiting. Went last night for 90's night. Bought tickets on line, and when we got there, the line was AROUND THE BLOCK past the old Bank of America! There was tons of confusion, and nobody knew what line was what. A couple of my friends immediately said "fuck this shit" and took off at the sight of it. Eventually the rude security guard told my wife we had our own line for ticket holders. So we got in, only to be squashed like sardines into a big room and ignored by the bartender leaving us irritated and thirsty. Finally got some 9$ beers only to be informed that there were no 90's bands actually playing, and they were just gonna play 90's music all night. Wtf? Ok that was it. We left. This place seems to have great potential, but it wasn't showing at all last night. And if you are weird about other people touching you, you might wanna avoid this place. The place is cute but it was beyond packed to where we were shoulder to shoulder with everybody....the bathroom smell was horrible and could be smelled on the dance floor. I went back to Strummers, last night, after about 3 years. The last time I was there was when I was back in town to see family and had gone there with a few friends. A confrontation ensued when some guy (you all know the crowd) tried to start a fight with us and kept on calling me "Fez" (the guy from the 70s show. When we called the bouncer, a white-supremacist looking guy with earrings showed up (seen him a few times there, wears dark glasses and looks like he has not changed his clothes since he was 17 and going through a grunge phase), instead of addressing the situation the guy the kept on telling me that "he could not understand me." I had vowed to not go back here, which is unfortunate because I really like the bartenders here. But I was surprised last night how nice the bouncer was. Perhaps they are actively trying to address the situation of bad/white-supremacist bouncers (just read other reviews). Absolutely the worst venue I have ever been in in California. I have never seen a worse ran, worse kept location in my life. If it was not for our favorite band playing there I guarantee we would have never stayed. Treat ADA horribly, food operation needs a major visit from the health dept and that is speaking as a serve safe instructor. The staff was too busy watching the show in stead of doing their job. Roof coming in, bathrooms I wouldn't let my cat use and top it off saw big fat roach when leaving. This place needs to be burned to the ground and anything else be rebuilt in its place. As a former club manager and touring DJ start by firing everyone, fix up basic cosmetics, hire a exterminator, and fix about everything. This was the worst first experience ever! Unless you like to be physically assaulted, do not come here. My wife went to the restroom and was kicked out by a female "security guard" because she was "taking too long". The female security guard even went out of her own way to grab my wife by her arm and pull her aggressively. When I asked the female security guard why she was kicking us out, she became defensive and began to make false accusations that I was "raising my hand" and "verbally attacking her". Although I was upset about what she did, I still did not act out. I then spoke to the manager, and he began to take the female security guard's side without listening to reason. Came back and bought 3 IPA DRAFTS and the bartender got upset and made us sit there and try to tip her TO POUR BEER. When we didn't, she said "just buy shots and tip me" We didn't want to We went to a booth and she followed us and said "don't think I forgot." WHO DOES THAT?! "Numbskull productions" has been a driving force in getting notable artists/bands (ex: KRS ONE, The Sword, Warbringer, etc) on a fairly consistent basis and at one point even hosted an independent wrestling event...you read that right they got a wrestling ring in there! The sound has been adequate to stellar, so it's really dependent on the sound guy. The bartenders are fairly consistent with their drinks and prompt with their service, depending on which side you're on. While it does get crowded for a big show you can still get a drink. The main downside being is if there's an "all ages" show 1/3rd of a the bar will be sectioned off as "21 over" so you can't leave that area with a drink enjoy being stuck in that area for the remainder of the event unless you down your drink and join your friends on the outside. If you have a purse or bag THEY WILL NOT LET YOU IN THE VENUE, don't bother bringing it as they'll rudely let you know. The security needs to work on their customer service and how they treat patrons of the venue it's really the main flaw that Strummers has. Expect the cost of a mixed drink to run about 7-8 on average, if it's a big event expect the cost to drastically jump up i.e. Halloween it was a $11. Like other venues in Tower there will be a line for the Men's room. read more
