My 80 y/o mother has an older Subaru Outback. The stock headlights aren't bright enough to compete with newer cars shining their lights at you. I bought very expensive aftermarket bulbs but discovered the front bumper must be removed to change the light housing which I also wanted to replace. I saw this body shop had high stars on Yelp so I called to ask if they would perform the work. Their immediate response was "no" and "we don't do that kind of work and only install OEM components." I kindly asked " do you recommend anyone else that will do this work for me?". Immediate "nope, you'll just have to call around" They were about as helpful as a broken fence post and could care less in my opinion. My next phone call was to Underhood Automotive. Immediately helpful and professional. Chris said they do this kind of work all the time and install DOT legal headlights on older Shasta County Search and Rescue vehicles. Every single question I asked was answered. I live 4 hours away from Redding so coordinating this was somewhat of a Challenge. Chris even told me my mom's car had loud squeeking brakes and he would inspect those as well. Strong Automotive has high stars so I'm guessing their body work is pretty good but customer service is also very important and in this department, they have a long way to go. read more

Went in with a battery light sporadically turning on and off and working with their supplier they were able to honor a warranty that I received at a different mechanic and have the part and labor covered(getting the part in shop within an hour). It turned out to be a loose wire but they still covered the labor. All I had to cover was an oil change. They've been working on our cars for years, and after my 2002 Toyota Camry decided it didn't want to start ( old original starter it turned out! ) Stong's was the first place I called. Took my 2015 Hyundai Sonata in for a blown engine. Rather than quietly make repairs at my expense, Mike asked some questions and informed me that I should contact the dealer about a recall. I did that and discovered that it WAS covered under warranty. These guys demonstrated a level of honesty that you just don't see that often anymore. When I arrived the following morning to meet the tow truck driver, Mike met me in the driveway with a printout of the warranty information for my car. He did not have to do that. I'm not giving them five because I spent 850 dollars on a water pump and then my car broke down again four hours later and it was a much bigger problem that would have been 4000 dollars to fix. We were just passing through Redding on I-5, and had problems with our windshield wiper. We pulled off the highway and stopped at the first auto-repair place we saw: Strong Automotive. I thought we just needed to replace the wipers. But the mechanic (Michael?) quickly figured out the gear was off, and possibly stripped. He was able to clean it out, re-align it, and re-attach it, getting us back on our way in less than 15 minutes. And he wouldn't take any money for it!!! SOOOO refreshing and reassuring to be saved by a highly skilled, friendly, humble, and honest-to-a-fault mechanic. Couldn't recommend him highly enough. read more

A week and small change ago, we were traveling from Arcata to Oroville, CA. Just east of Weaverville, a Christmas tree of lights went on on my dash--not good. An overheating condition existed; cause unknown at that point. I was able to nurse the car into Redding; we had called a couple of shops on the way in--the Honda dealer was useless; a relative near Redding recommended another shop, which, was booked for a week in advance. That shop then recommended Strong Automotive--what a blessing that was! We called; Mike Peoples answered, and cordially gave us the "green light" to come on in; they had an open bay from a cancellation. The diagnosis, for which I was expecting perhaps a water pump failure, turned out to be a blown head gasket--this as the result of another shop's oversight in failing to replace the radiator cap on a recent service. This shop was extremely helpful, courteous, and kept us up to date on the car's repair progress. When the job was done, I traveled to Redding and picked up the car--they even washed it for me! Mike and Mike--they are consummate professionals, and made my bad experience with the mechanical breakdown into a happy ending. I highly recommend this shop, and if I lived in Redding, this would be my GO-TO shop for my car maintenance! P.S.--this Yelp comes a bit late, thought I had already finished it, kinda fell off the radar--my bad... I took the car to the original shop where the incident first occurred, at their request (yes, I still do business with them, I don't begrudge them the oversight, they are a good shop) where they inspected the work after 800 road miles, and said all was done well! 2 thumbs way-up, Strongs! I just want to let you know that I would not recommend to anyone because I had to take my car to fix my aircondition and waiting for one and half hour later one of the workers came to me and estimate cost $1200 or more than that. Actually, I was shocked. Also, I am so sorry to say that they are not really helping people but ???. Very very unfortunately, they have charged more than $100 from me, did nothing. My advice for those who go to this place, make sure ask cost before they touch your vehicle first. I think that they should communicate with the customer before they charge anything from innocent people . Actually, they don't deserve any stars. read more

We went to Strong's 11/19/19 to get a 2004 Ford Mustang's alternator fixed. The work was good. Mike charged $107.37 for the labor and $453.73 for the alternator. We do not know where Mike got the part but the invoice says Napa AutoCare Center on it. We had previously called Napa to find out the price of a good alternator, the clerk at Napa quoted my husband $160.00. When we saw the invoice from Mike after the car was repaired, my husband was a little shocked at the price of the part, so he questioned Mike about the price of the alternator. My husband said: "It looks like you marked the alternator up over $200 more than you paid" Mike's response was "I guarantee you I marked it up over $200." He went on to say "I mark my parts up the standard percentage for the industry. Mike went on to say that is what keeps my lights on and doors open." We just got the same car repaired again (different problem) and went somewhere else. We asked for a quote of how much it would cost to replace the alternator with a middle to top of the line alternator and the out the door quote was $354. Our out the door price for a new alternator we paid to Strong's automotive was a total of $594 and the out the door quote from the licensed and reputable place we went to yesterday was $354. Big difference if you care about money. read more

My wife and I were in the area camping when the starter went out in my truck. After getting it towed to Strong Automotive, they were quick to figure out what was wrong and to fix the problem. They were very helpful, communicative, and went above and beyond to help the crappy situation my wife and I were in. Honest & fair. My wife was told she was in need of a brake job, because brake pads were at 20% , by a young man working at a tire store. I took her car to Strong's. Mike Strong inspected the brakes & said the brakes were good with over 50% of the pads left. Mike charged us nothing for the service. I recently had a pretty bad curb impact (totally my fault...). Since the impact, I've noticed that my handling was shaky and my wife who drove behind me at one point noticed that my wheels that were impacted were visibly wobbly. I did not feel safe driving the vehicle past 40 mph so I took it into Strong Automotive. There were a few cars ahead of me so I had to wait my turn (which is normal, people...). Not too long after, I got a call from Mike saying that he noticed that the two wheels that experienced the impact are pretty badly bent and encouraged I get new ones for the two. He gave recommendations on exactly where I might be able to find the same wheels as mine, but also said that I could potentially look at getting new wheels for all four if it's too much of a hassle. I went back after work to pick up my vehicle and he would not take a payment for this service. Strong Automotive really cares about their customers and aims to have the vehicles fixed in a timely manner so we can be back on the road safely. I know that this wasn't a major service, but I do believe that it was definitely cost-worthy because of the labor at the least. Thanks, Mike! read more
