We stopped by on 26 August 2021. We were seeing part of Route 66 and were heading into Oklahoma City to get some lunch. We were hungry, but also had our little pooch with us and wanted outdoor seating. We passed this place with a cute sign and patio seating in the shade and thought we would try it out. I turned around and went back and we were very happy that we did. It was a hot day but pleasant in the shade. Everyone was nice. They brought out a bowl of water for our dog. We each had a Stray Dog Combo upgraded to fries instead of chips, very good. To me, this is very much what Route 66 is all about, the independent mom-and-pop place serving good food at reasonable prices, and not the typical stuff you find back home. This place is just ok. It's very cute. However we went several times & just didn't love the food. We did love that they make all the desserts scratch made & make a lot of their own breads. Just not our style. The mac & cheese had a very strange flavor. The hot dog was good but they served it to us in a bowl, that was really awkward to eat. All the burgers were served with fresh ingredients, but overcooked the meat & we didn't like the Jalapeño buns. I didn't really like any of the buns unfortunately. We loved the tiny cut fries. This place is looking run down and grimy these days. And the food isn't good enough to overcome that. Burgers are solid, but nothing to go out of your way for. Patty 1/3 lb, overcooked and gray but with seasoned, beefy flavor and fresh vegetables. They're a good size, around $10 with tax, but side is extra. They do a lot of up-charges here with no notice from the server, which is a pet peeve of mine. Please don't nickel and dime your customers..Or if you must, at least be up front about it. As for the other dishes I tried, all were misses. Their Stray Dog, a simply made chili cheese coney, left a lot to be desired. Though their tangy tomato-based chili was pretty good. Fries were fresh cut but tasted too strong of oil. Onion rings were kinda dry and tasteless, with zero crunch. The ranch was thin and dripped everywhere. Even the Dr Pepper was watered down. I had family in for the holidays so we decided to have a breakfast adventure and try out the Stray Dog. I was somewhat embarrassed since it was my idea. My daughter ordered the Denver omelette and it was so oily she was gagging after a few bites. You could see the entire plate shimmering from across the table. My food was fine but neither of my guests got half way through their food. On the plus side, the bread was delicious, portions were great, service was good and prices were good. Now open for a decade, Stray Dog Cafe continues to offer excellent service and delicious food in the heart of Bethany. I was excited to try it when it opened in 2013, and it hasn't disappointed me yet. My favorite meal here is breakfast, and that's what the four of us had on a cold, rainy October Saturday morning. To start, I parked in the parking lot behind the shopping center in which Stray Dog lies. That's safer than using the on-street parking, and there are plenty of spots to choose from. Just make sure you avoid the potholes throughout the lot. Having parked in the rear parking lot, I entered through the back door. A few feet into the restaurant, I could smell all the delicious smells of breakfast. I also noticed that they were selling pumpkin pancakes as a daily breakfast special. I usually get either pancakes or French toast for breakfast at Stray Dog, so I took note. When it came time to order, I went with the pumpkin pancakes. They were delicious! They got the pumpkin pie spice just right in the batter -- enough to make me notice it but not so much that it left a spicy taste or gritty texture in my mouth. The pecans were scattered on top. I would have preferred them baked into the pancakes, but I didn't know to request it that way when I placed my order. There was also a sugary pumpkin spice flavored drizzle on top of the stack of two pancakes. They almost didn't need any syrup on them! However, I indulged in some syrup and was not disappointed. I requested crispy bacon as my meat side. It wasn't as crispy as I like, but I wasn't in the mood to send it back. As usual, bacon balanced out the sweet and spicy of the pancake with its salty and flavors. I am a lover of a good diner!! For all of my visits to OKC, this was my first time to visit Bethany. What a darling little town. I could almost feel the history oozing through the building walls. Stray Dog Cafe is where we chose to eat before walking the aisles of The Rink. It was a typical, well-visited diner. We were greeted by our friendly, attentive waitress almost immediately upon taking our seat and a yummy bowl of popcorn was set before us. Burgers..not a frozen pattie, hand cut fries and chips are what we ordered and we were not disappointed!! The burgers were perfectly cooked. The fries and chips were delicious. Sadly we didn't have room for dessert because those homemade pies looked scrumptious. Why only four stars? Because the breakfast menu ended at 11 rather than being all day. Stray Dog has changed their format after an attempt at retirement that didn't 'take'. Instead of a standard 'morning to night' schedule with any number of offerings, Stray Dog offers one - yes, just ONE - choice per day, Monday through Thursday; take-out only. You have to call and reserve that choice - a single serving, a double, or 'family' (which serves two adults and two children OR three adults), and pick up the ready-to-eat meal between 4pm and 6pm on the day in question. Everything we've had has been delicious - just like having dinner at Mom's house (if Mom were a good cook!). No dishes to wash. Not much in the way of leftovers to store - though I do confess to our saving enough roast chicken one night to have wonderful chicken salad sandwiches for lunch the next day. Service is smooth; the owners (Joe and Suzi) are both there and have done the cooking themselves; and a wide selection of the best in the way of desserts are available daily. Selections so far have included roast chicken, meatloaf, Salisbury steak, glazed pork chops, various pasta dishes, enchilada casserole, Indian tacos, etc., all served with appropriate sides, veggies, and rolls. The cost is right. The food can't be beat. The folks are a joy. We're eating Stray Dog provided meals whenever they're available and saving money at the market while preventing wear and tear on aching joints. Highly recommend! read more

We stumbled into this place walking around downtown and we were craving desserts. You can get pies by the slice. We tried lime, coconut and blueberry pie. They were all so delicious and tasted homemade. This has been a regular hangout for my girlfriends. We also did a surprise baby shower another day. They worked with us to get all kinds of pie to make one pie since there wasn't whole pies that way. They did an awesome job. Also not pictured is their homemade potato chips and sweet potato fries are so so delicious. I really need to come back and try their hot dogs and burgers because they look amazing as well. This place is fantastic! Everything is fresh made from the fries to the guacamole on the burger to the pies! I would have taken a picture of our burgers but they looked(and were) delicious and we were hungry. I did manage to get a picture of the homemade pie. I was in town for a few weeks and wanted to find a local, independently owned, American food restaurant and lucked out with this gem. Staff was so friendly and welcoming, and the specials sounded delicious, so we stayed. What a great little family-owned diner! We were regular customers here for a while and then 2020 happened. I went back last weekend for breakfast and it's still just as delicious as ever. They've installed dividers in between the booths, and every staff member that I saw was masked. They also have curbside pickup available, all you have to do is call! It's nice to see one of my favorite places taking the pandemic seriously. Oh, and don't leave without getting a dessert, EVER. You never know what delights await you in the dessert case. I was craving a good chili pie so that's what I ordered....... I didn't receive it til 40 mins later. And it wasn't even chili. It had NO beans. It was super ketchupy and the "meat" was so tiny that I'm pretty sure it was a can of manwich for sloppy joes. That's exactly what it tasted and looked like. And it was cold, so, that was cool. Maybe our first mistake was going to dinner instead of breakfast and our second mistake was expecting more of a diner food menu for dinner rather than a sandwiches and bar food. The waiter never came to check on us and we were not able get his attention to get some mayo for his patty melt. Took a few minutes for someone to acknowledge we were there in the booth. Wasn't very busy. Ordered over easy, sausage Pattie's, grits.... White toast. And some pancakes for her! Couldn't cut the sausage with my fork had to use a knife as it was too hard. Tasted alright. grits were pretty good. Not sure what sort of butter they use but it was alright. Sorry, but I did not have a good experience at the Stray Dog. We did get fast service, almost a little impatient we needed a bit to look at the menu. We loved the popcorn from the dog bowl, that was the high point. For sure. I had the Caesar burger and bad and mac and cheese. The Caesar dressing was metallic. I literally had to scrape it off and ask for steak sauce to try and cover it up. It didnt work. The mac and cheese was very cheesy but not my style. It tasted like it had a ton of garlic or onion powder in it. I ended up having some of my friends fries and they were really good. Wish I had just ordered a big basket of fries.
