I arrived early for an appointment across the street and was parked in front of Strange Donuts. To my surprise, they were open. I honestly thought they had gone out of business, because it always looked closed when I was in the area. Once I got out of my car and approached the door, I saw the hours and realized that every time I was in the area, they indeed were closed. I already had a coffee, so all I needed for a late breakfast was a donut. The Cinnamon Roll tempted me, but it was HUGE. Then I was torn between, Blueberry Chocolate and Chocolate Pistachio, but I ended up ordering a Chocolate Steve. A Chocolate Steve, is basically a Long John. It just has a different name at, Strange Donuts. The donut was good and the chocolate icing wasn't overly sweet. The employee was cordial and made my purchase easy. Great donuts. Raspberry Oreo might've been my favorite. All of them were very soft and fresh. They were out of the French apple so we could not try that one. But the cream cheese, blueberry, cinnamon roll doughnut was huge! And so so yummy. The maple bacon was great as well, the perfect balance of savory and sweet. The reason I give four stars instead of five is that the inside could use a little bit of work. Maybe add a table or two? It wasn't very inviting. This is more of a grab and go place. There is nowhere to sit and eat your donuts or hang out. However, they do serve coffee to go. I did not try it. read more

There are few things I love more than donuts on a Saturday morning in Fall. So hallelujah for Strange Donuts! Today, I tried their Vanilla Steve--like a long john only shorter and wider--and the Rainbow Pony because I still love sprinkles on my breakfast. Both were great (moist & fresh) but Steve takes the blue ribbon for being so light and fluffy. This donut shop typically sells a variety of 8-12 different donuts. Most are unique flavors but they do always have a few standard flavors for those less likely to experiment. It's a small spot usually with only one friendly employee working behind the counter. Excited to check out a place called Strange Donuts! The only person working was a bit rude. I is was ready to spend money on donuts and merch. I asked about sizes of the shirts as they were high up on the shelves. She wouldn't bother to look and just said no when I asked about other styles and sizes. I ordered the gluten free donut and another donut for my partner. She put them in the same bag. Really? When I asked about it being out in a different bag. She seemed out out and said one had wrapping around it. I just witnessed another customer before me who ordered gluten free donuts and non GF and the person put them in separate bags. WTH! I found a donut shop that stays open until Midnight on a few days!!! Stopped on my way home from my 2nd job and grabbed a couple boxes for the office (at my day job) for Valentine's Day!! These donuts are pretty Amazing!!! My favorite was the Gooey Butter and Strawberry Delight (if you like a jelly filled donut).. the jelly was homemade with chunks of strawberries!!! Holy Moly!! I was a little disappointed with the Cookies n Cream as it was kinda dry??? My picks: originally glazed, pink poney, Gooey butter, Fat Elvis (Banana filled cream and peanut butter icing), strawberry Delight, Cookies and Cream. I don't like leaving bad reviews but their donuts were not good . I saw that they didn't get great reviews but I still wanted to try it. I got a sprinkle donut and a ooey gooey one and the latter one was terrible. The Sprinkle one was ok. I haven't tried a great donut place in MO. I do prefer yeast ones over cakes ones and the two I tried were cake ones but I have better cake ones elsewhere. I try to give them the benefit, but it pains me every time for a $30 box of donuts. Please be consistent with your product. When you walk by a donut shop, how do you not turn around and walk in? That's exactly what happened when I came upon Strange Donuts. Sadly, they were almost closing so I felt rushed (by myself, not the employees). I did notice they had a wide variety of donuts still available (FYI these are yeast donuts). Knowing that I was eating soon I only had one, which is a bummer in and of itself. The girl behind the counter was beyond sweet. We chatted briefly while I ordered my, "Hawaiian Punch" donut. The donut was sweet and delicious, but I failed to taste the sweet nectar that is Hawaiian Punch. Launched by Jason Bockman in October of 2013, Strange Donuts is celebrated by some St. Louisans as one of the city's premier Doughnutteries, yet despite an early arrival on "Black Friday" morning the products tasted ranged from merely fair to frankly dry and unappealing. Located in Maplewood, and proudly offering "Original Classics" alongside "Unique Creations," it was minutes past 8:00am that the counter was found unattended, a disheveled man soon emerging for the kitchen and answering a few questions before accepting $8.25 in exchange for four fried rounds. Only approximately 500 square feet, and doing nothing in terms of presentation or seating to inspire guests to stay, it was after transporting goods elsewhere that first bites were taken of Strange Donut's "Rainbow Pony," one friend's comment that it "looks like a cartoon drawing of a Donut" oddly appropriate as everything save for the Frosting was as dry and flavorless as a sheet of paper. Finding a "White Russian" no better, hints of Coffee in the Glaze appreciated though nothing approximating Kahlúa was detected, it is under the title of "Linzer" that Strange Donuts sells a fairly basic Raspberry Jelly Bismark while "Gooey Butter" falls far short of Old Town Donuts version despite costing 2.5x the price. read more

I really loved Strange Donuts when they opened up their original store in Maplewood, but over the years the premise has changed and it doesn't spark as much joy as it initially did. I used to look forward to all their special donut creations coming out watching them intently on social media. I remember the super long lines that would form outside the doors each weekend evening. On my last visit my husband and I were the only ones there. It had been years since I had been in, but I had a coupon for a free Creation Done in our STL Experience Book we wanted to redeem before the end of the year. Strange Donuts had a special Andes Mint Done for $5, so we decided to use our coupon on that and pay the difference. The mint icing was pretty good, with a ball of fudge in the center topped with Andes Mint pieces. But the chocolate donuts stacked together were pretty dry and bland. Aww man! I really wanted to this place to be Amazing! I have been hearing about this place here and there, and finally decided to go one morning with my wife. Here is what we ordered, and what I thought about each one. Gooey butter cake - I read a review that said this would be life-changing, so I just HAD to get it. I was a little disappointed. I couldn't taste the gooey butter cake-ness. All I tasted was a solid cake donut. Blueberry jam - Filling was delicious. Tasted like they made it in house. Probably my favorite out of the 4, and I'm not usually a huge fan of filled donuts. Maple bacon - So I pretty much will get anything with bacon on top of it. I felt like the donut topping was well done with the maple glaze and pieces of bacon. Chocolate hazelnut - My wife had to get this one. Bacon is to me, as Nutella is to her. Pretty good, just a donut with Nutella on it basically. I felt like the toppings were good, but what was missing was a good foundation for the toppings. The donuts we had were all on the dryer side and really didn't leave us wanting to come back for another bite. (Now that I think about it, maybe I liked the jam donut the most because there was a lot of jam to cover up the dryness of the donut itself.) Definitely like the "strange" toppings/filling concept, but without a solid base for the toppings/fillings the whole amazing donut expectation is thrown off. Ah, yes.... strange. You have my heart. And my stomach. I love the constant rotation of amazing and unique donuts, ranging from safe to "wait, what?" pop-up donuts. I really wanted to like Strange Donuts. I've heard all the hype and seen the long lines outside but after two visits, they are just not my thing. There's no doubt that their donuts are fresh and interesting but some of the tastes are just too much. The gooey butter for example has way too much gooey on top. You need a bib when eating it. Winter hours; closes at midnight on weekends versus 2am. I was craving strange and almost didn't meet the cut-off because I assumed the 2am closing time was still in effect. Nevertheless I was there by 11:45pm and snagged a glazed, 1 Razz and 2 Chocolate yeast delights. 4/5 only because these babies are a bit pricey for specialty dough. The customer service is top notch! The guys are extremely friendly and make you feel appreciated as a customer. The concepts for the unusual donuts are great! Finally something local! Gooey butter cake. I'm a big fan of this cake; however I thought the flavor was a bit overly buttery and left an odd aftertaste. Maybe it's just me since I know it's a favorite. Started a Saturday morning excited to try some Strange Donuts. Walked in to a such an upbeat, fun place! Music was playing, staff was friendly and they were giving out free birthday donuts. I really liked the fun atmosphere! We ordered a campfire, maple bacon, jelly and gooey butter. My favorite was the campfire. Cake donuts are not usually my favorite, but these were the best out of the ones we ordered. The dough tasted different than your typical cake donut. A bit lighter and drier and paired well with coffee. The maple bacon topping and icing were great, but I didn't like the glazed type dough at all on this one. The topping is what made the maple bacon edible. If it was just glazed I wouldn't have eaten more than a few bites. My husband felt the same about the jelly donut. Dry, bland, almost inedible dough. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, friendly service and creative toppings. I really wanted to love the donuts, but thought they were just okay. If I happen to be in the area again one morning, I might stop in for another cake donut, but probably won't go out of my way to come here. read more

Strange Donuts is not a mere donut shop. It's a full-on movement, and a huge asset to St Louis. Let's start with the donuts. Honestly, I don't care much for the standard yeast donuts. I've tried a few and been underwhelmed. If it looks like regular donut with some stuff on top, I stay away. Where this place really shines are the cake-style (and specialty) donuts. I've recently had the raspberry shortcake, blueberry cheesecake, and gooey butter cake. These have all been awesome and well worth the $2 price. I tried their new cannoli donut which was pretty great with the filling inside. Stick with cake-style donuts and you'll be happy. Now, lets talk about the Strangers. These donut-based creations are usually collaborations with other local restaurants. Sometimes they are sweet, but often time these are savory creations, and a custom donut takes the place of a bread. The Strangers are usually available Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from around 9-12 (check their social media). The Strangers are reliably creative and delicious. The most recent one I had was a collab w/ Sugarfire BBQ, which had pulled pork on top of a donut with a lime cream filling. It was fantastic. Just recently they did a Reuben-style creation w/ Carl's Deli using rye-style donuts. Sadly I did not try it. The Strangers run $5 and are well worth it for the amount of food you get. There are generally lines outside on weekend nights. If you want to try a Stranger and avoid a long wait, I'd suggest coming on a Thursday around 9pm. Of course there are lots of other donuts also avaiable on these nights. Another great thing about Strange Donuts is the cool factor. These guys just make St. Louis more fun and unpredictable. Being a 90s hip-hop fan, I was delighted to hear some old school Tribe on the speakers one night. Last time I was there, a flamboyant local celebrity was there filming a news segment and engaging with the people in line. I think they've put on free punk-rock shows in the store. They commissioned a local studio to build their own iPhone game! Check it out, it's sort of like Paperboy. The people working there are always nice and you wish they were your friends. On the whole, this is one of the better donut places I've been to outside of my hometown Memphis' Gibson's Donuts. It's a cute little place towards the outskirts of Maplewood, and the hours are quite solid. I particularly enjoyed the several flavors and types of donuts they had, though I was surprised so many of them were cake donuts; it might be a good thing to ask if you prefer a different fill, but they were all pretty solid to me. Of course, I had to get the Gooey Butter Cake, and it was excellent. And to top it off, the service was superb; the young lady was helpful, friendly, and conversational, particularly for it being early in the morning. My only two cents suggestion would be to add some seating; it felt a little strange to stand and talk as we ate our donuts. It certainly would encourage a consistent customer community and base as well. 5 years in STL and just made it to Strange Donuts! Better late than never in this case, because these donuts were some of the best. I have been a donut lover since I was a little girl, walking two blocks with my little sister ever Saturday to get donuts at Donut King - 1 cake with sprinkle, one glaze, and some donut holes. Well, old habits die hard, because what finally sealed the deal to go to strange donuts for me was realizing they also had not-strange donuts, like their rainbow pony cake donut. My husband and I went this past Friday, four minutes before they closed at 10pm, due to winter hours, as usually they are open to midnight on Friday and Saturday. We were the only ones in the place, a very small, hole-in-the-wall kinda vibe, and we walked away with four donuts, two regular and two unique flavors. What I like is that their standard flavors are always available, of which there are about four or five, and then the other five flavors are rotating, which gives the best of both world in my opinion. I also love that they keep it simple, but wish there was a bit more seating. The service was great, and the quality was fantastic. These donuts were light, doughy, and not greasy, all at the same time, even for the last call on a Friday - pretty impressive! We even continued to snack on the ones we didn't finish the next day, and they still held up, compared to many donuts that will turn into rocks. So happy Strange Donuts changed their dough and I can certainly tell there's a difference! I was not a fan of their donuts in the beginning of when they first opened. However, I wanted to give this local place another try after hearing they changed their dough. So glad I did because now their donuts are nice and moist! They are definitely not dry and impressed they stay moist throughout the day too as I've saved some for later. I've gotten their seasonal pumpkin donut, gooey butter, and a chocolate cake donut with fudge icing and sprinkles. All were so tasty! They were not too sweet, which is perfect.
