There are few things I love more than donuts on a Saturday morning in Fall. So hallelujah for Strange Donuts! Today, I tried their Vanilla Steve--like a long john only shorter and wider--and the Rainbow Pony because I still love sprinkles on my breakfast. Both were great (moist & fresh) but Steve takes the blue ribbon for being so light and fluffy. This donut shop typically sells a variety of 8-12 different donuts. Most are unique flavors but they do always have a few standard flavors for those less likely to experiment. It's a small spot usually with only one friendly employee working behind the counter. It's quiet & easy to get in and out. Come by and try it out!
Not impressed by the service or the donuts in the least bit actually quite disappointed! We are traveling from MN and we like to try new donut places. Excited to check out a place called Strange Donuts! The only person working was a bit rude. I is was ready to spend money on donuts and merch. I asked about sizes of the shirts as they were high up on the shelves. She wouldn't bother to look and just said no when I asked about other styles and sizes. I ordered the gluten free donut and another donut for my partner. She put them in the same bag. Really? When I asked about it being out in a different bag. She seemed out out and said one had wrapping around it. I just witnessed another customer before me who ordered gluten free donuts and non GF and the person put them in separate bags. WTH! Also, no restrooms. Gah! We just paid and left and I took a photo and then took a It of my gf donut. Disgusting is all I can say and I threw the rest away. My partner said his red velvet one wasn't that great either. My advice would try a different donut place.
I found a donut shop that stays open until Midnight on a few days!!! Stopped on my way home from my 2nd job and grabbed a couple boxes for the office (at my day job) for Valentine's Day!! These donuts are pretty Amazing!!! My favorite was the Gooey Butter and Strawberry Delight (if you like a jelly filled donut).. the jelly was homemade with chunks of strawberries!!! Holy Moly!! I was a little disappointed with the Cookies n Cream as it was kinda dry??? My picks: originally glazed, pink poney, Gooey butter, Fat Elvis (Banana filled cream and peanut butter icing), strawberry Delight, Cookies and Cream. I am hoping next time I stop they will have the Maple Bacon available!!! I will also get some of the Coffee!!!
I got the ooey gooey donut. The icing on top was really good but the donut itself was kind of dry. I went at 10 am and they open at 6 am so it could just be that it was sitting out for 4 hours but based off this, I wouldn't come back.
Pretty pricey donuts! Not sure they are worth the price. The cake donuts have a strange flavor, is it yogurt? Sour cream? Tastes weird. And they don't have cream filled donuts!!! Those are my favorite kind.
I don't like leaving bad reviews but their donuts were not good . I saw that they didn't get great reviews but I still wanted to try it. I got a sprinkle donut and a ooey gooey one and the latter one was terrible. The Sprinkle one was ok. I haven't tried a great donut place in MO. I do prefer yeast ones over cakes ones and the two I tried were cake ones but I have better cake ones elsewhere. On a positive note, they do look better than they taste and they are not super expensive.
When you walk by a donut shop, how do you not turn around and walk in? That's exactly what happened when I came upon Strange Donuts. Sadly, they were almost closing so I felt rushed (by myself, not the employees). I did notice they had a wide variety of donuts still available (FYI these are yeast donuts). Knowing that I was eating soon I only had one, which is a bummer in and of itself. The girl behind the counter was beyond sweet. We chatted briefly while I ordered my, "Hawaiian Punch" donut. The donut was sweet and delicious, but I failed to taste the sweet nectar that is Hawaiian Punch. That being said, the donut was amazing, but blindfolded, I would have never have been able to tell you want that flavor was. Taste-wise, total score. I'd eat a dozen if I could. And if you live in the Lou, you should.
Launched by Jason Bockman in October of 2013, Strange Donuts is celebrated by some St. Louisans as one of the city's premier Doughnutteries, yet despite an early arrival on "Black Friday" morning the products tasted ranged from merely fair to frankly dry and unappealing. Located in Maplewood, and proudly offering "Original Classics" alongside "Unique Creations," it was minutes past 8:00am that the counter was found unattended, a disheveled man soon emerging for the kitchen and answering a few questions before accepting $8.25 in exchange for four fried rounds. Only approximately 500 square feet, and doing nothing in terms of presentation or seating to inspire guests to stay, it was after transporting goods elsewhere that first bites were taken of Strange Donut's "Rainbow Pony," one friend's comment that it "looks like a cartoon drawing of a Donut" oddly appropriate as everything save for the Frosting was as dry and flavorless as a sheet of paper. Finding a "White Russian" no better, hints of Coffee in the Glaze appreciated though nothing approximating Kahlúa was detected, it is under the title of "Linzer" that Strange Donuts sells a fairly basic Raspberry Jelly Bismark while "Gooey Butter" falls far short of Old Town Donuts version despite costing 2.5x the price.
New to the area my fiance and I were walking around and we were called over to a fresh batch of donuts . They did not disappoint me. The atmosphere was welcoming and xantvwait to try next months flavors.
I really loved Strange Donuts when they opened up their original store in Maplewood, but over the years the premise has changed and it doesn't spark as much joy as it initially did. I used to look forward to all their special donut creations coming out watching them intently on social media. I remember the super long lines that would form outside the doors each weekend evening. On my last visit my husband and I were the only ones there. It had been years since I had been in, but I had a coupon for a free Creation Done in our STL Experience Book we wanted to redeem before the end of the year. Strange Donuts had a special Andes Mint Done for $5, so we decided to use our coupon on that and pay the difference. The mint icing was pretty good, with a ball of fudge in the center topped with Andes Mint pieces. But the chocolate donuts stacked together were pretty dry and bland. Not like the dones I once knew and loved. Obviously Strange Donuts is doing well since they've expanded so much, but I really miss the dones of yesteryear.

I am visiting St. Louis so I took my niece & nephew for donuts. We decided to go for 6 so we could all "taste test" a variety at home. We got: rainbow pony French toast strawberry shortcake gooey butter bacon maple & one chocolate with a gummy worm on top (nephew's choice...forgot the name) My favorite was French toast. I enjoyed the taste test but none wow'ed me like I dreamed of. All in all, unique spot worth a stop in! To be honest I was underwhelmed. The store is very small with no place to sit. When this place opened the lines were out the door, now I realize why. It's tiny. They had several donuts ready to be eaten at 8pm on a Friday night which is great for late snackys. I like how they put one of each donut out instead of filling cases. We got 8 out of the 12 offered. I just couldn't do a donut filled with yams. All of them tasted fried. Yes I know they are but there are places to get donuts that do not have that tastes. The fat steve ended up being our favorite. It was the least "exciting" but tasted the best. Pretty much like a vanilla long john. I've been there no need to return. read more

As donuts go , this is a go to for me. There are so many options, it's tough to say something is not good. If I know I don't like custard, I'm not going to get a filled donut. I like the rainbow pony and Bart's revenge. The cake donuts here are great and fresh. A pick up and go or loiter location. Always fast and friendly, you will find something you read more
After Straub's stopped carrying my lusted-after Vincent VanDoughnuts, we came to Strange Donuts for a fix. The staff was really friendly and funny, but the donuts left much to be desired. Honestly, the donuts themselves were just...blah. Regular grocery store quality. Not super moist, not super fresh tasting, just...kind of disappointing. Basic heavy cake donuts. The flavors of the icing and toppings were decent (maple bacon was good), but it seriously tastes like they buy regular store donuts and just dress them with toppings themselves. The shop didn't smell like fresh baked goods which also serves to support that suspicion. I'm disappointed. Gooey butter cake didn't taste like gooey butter cake. It had a weird flavor to it, hard to describe. Samoa was okay. We didn't finish a single donut out of the 12 we got. Took a bite or two of each, and just tossed them. :'( Bummer! If you want totally unique, handmade doughnuts, my favorite will always be Vincent Van Doughnut. read more
I have to start with the "not so obvious" things about this place, which contributed to my less than stellar score for Strange Donuts. From all the hype, I was expecting a normal donut shop with some flair, some pizazz..didn't happen. Matter of fact, this guy thought the first trip to Strange Donuts would be a great stop to take his wife and mother for breakfast. I was wrong. This location, by definition, is a hole in the wall. No wonder the lines are half way down the block. There is barely room for 3 people to stand and consider their options. There are no seats to sit and have a coffee and a donut, there is no ambiance, it is literally a door, a counter, and a guy (well two guys) dishing out donuts. Yipes! Once we realized this wasn't going to be the breakfast stop we were expecting, we flipped to option B which basically meant grabbing one of each donut we were interested in trying, and then heading off to a nearby pancake house to have a proper breakfast. Good thing we are versatile, because we were disappointed in the lack of even a bench to sit and scarf down one donut! As far as the selection and flavor goes, this was a mixed bag. From memory, there were about a dozen and a half different donuts to select from, ranging from a gluten free "puppy chow" donut, to more traditional looking choices. Our selections varied in taste and quality: Barts Revenge-Better than expected in terms of taste. The butterfinger topping didn't overpower the donut at all, and was almost lacking in all honesty. It tasted like a chocolate donut with chocolate icing, and not much else. Gooey Butter Cake-It was okay. The icing was buttery, but it didn't really capture the essence of a good gooey butter cake for me. The donut itself was also a bit dry. French Toast-again, tasted like a cake donut with powdered sugar on it, but not the "powdered sugar" style you buy at the grocery store, but a sprinkling of powdered sugar, more for effect than anything else. Banana Pudding-not a huge fan of pudding filled donuts, in all honesty, but this one wasn't bad. Definitely better than the previous donuts, but not something I would get again. Captain Chocolate (not sure that's the right name)-it was a chocolate donut, with chocolate icing, and chocolate sprinkles. Nothing strange about it, but it was a good donut. Puppy Chow-Gluten free and very dry. I'm not a fan of puppy chow, this was my mothers selection, but even she wasn't impressed with it. Pumpkin Spice-NOW we are talking. This was a damned tasty donut. I loved it. I want another. Strawberry Cheesecake-another wonderful tasting donut. I love jelly filled so this was a no brainer. Maybe I loved this one most because it was jelly filled, maybe, but still, damned good choice if you are going to go to Strange Donuts. In all there is a lot of potential with Strange Donuts, but there isn't enough appeal for me to make this a regular stop. This is, however, a great place to take an out of towner to show them something different! Just plan on making these treats a dessert selection unless you like eating sticky donuts in your car! read more

At 11:15 on a Friday night the line was short... just a few people. By the time we go to the counter, there were only 4 donut types available. I get it, we were there LATE and I think they close when they run out of inventory... I guess if you want a better selection get there earlier. The donuts are strange, I saw some guy walk out with fruit loops on top of his, and the Yelp pictures tell the story of how diverse the donut selection can be. We tried a Barts Revenge (butterfinger), French Toast, Cocunut, and Gooey Butter. The icing and toppings were unique. But the donuts itself were dry, and crumbled like a stale cookie. The place is doing fine. They sell fried sugary treats to the late night Maplewood drunks. And the toppings are unique and memorable. But I went sober and found the product to be very underwhelming. read more
I'll set the scene: We're at a campfire on a beautiful Friday night. Topic of convo? New donut shop in STL: Strange Donuts. My mouth waters...man do I want a Campfire donut. Fitting! What's that you ask? Oh, just a cake donut, toped with chocolate, graham crackers crumbs and a FREAKING ROASTED MARSHMALLOW in the center. We ditch the fire, drive to Strange Donuts & I have a Campfire donut in my mouth 15 minutes later. Meta? Or maybe Strange?...that we left a burning fire pit to go get donuts? Is Strange the new Voodoo????? The long line and wait outside the door was not that bad, 30 min I think we spent in line but regardless the line was moving. The place itself is small. Super tiny with one door for entering and exiting. The decor is "Strange" for lack of a better word. I tried the Bart's Revenge, Gooey Butter, Chocolate, and a Raspberry Fritter. First of all all of the donuts are cake donuts that being said I expected great things inside each doughnut. A mix of very strange things in every bite but sadly the cake donuts were plain. At least the ones I mentioned above. The Bart's revenge was good. The doughnut was cakey. The butterfingers on top were good. The combination of the two were good but I was not blown away. The Chocolate doughnut was also good. Nothing spectacular though. Raspberry Fritter was okay. You can taste the oil it was fried in. It was not overly sweet and you can taste raspberry here and there. Overall it was a fine doughnut. The gooey butter was my least favorite. I have had Gooey Butter cake and I have always loved it. I expected the Gooey Butter doughnut to have a similar type of consistency in the doughnut or at least the same sweetness but it did not. The doughnut part was a simple doughnut. The topping is supposed to be "Gooey Butter" but it was not even close. It was salty, not as sweet and could have EASILY passed for a butter popcorn doughnut. You could taste the saltiness and smell the butter. I will praise the guys working the counter though. They were VERY quick and friendly. They were thankful and apologetic for the long wait outside. Among the chaos of people they were able to get people in and out and replenishing the doughnut supply when things got low. I give the service and the guys behind Strange Doughnuts 4 stars. I give the doughnuts themselves 3 stars. read more

My husband is an avid donut fanatic and has been following Strange Donuts at pretty much every special event they've been a part of well before they opened the doors. The grand opening was this morning and we got up well before the sunrise to be a part of it all. We were there at 4:45 AM so we could get the sweet tshirt of a freaking dinosaur in a donut spaceship. Yep. Dinosaur + Donut + Space= Amazeballs But we're not here to talk about shirts. We're here to talk about donuts. Strange Donuts has classics, creations, and "strange". At a past special event we had ordered a dozen Gooey Butter donuts. They were obviously a good recipe but not the best. I'm not sure if they had been baking for days to get ready for the event and the donut I had was a bit old or what. But I was not blown away. My husband told me all the others he had were wonderful and I trust the guy. So off we went to the grand opening. I tried the Gooey Butter again and I have to say, it was moist and flavorful and wonderful. I also tasted the Apple (can't remember the name: iSomething) covered in a cinnamon glaze. My favorite by far. And the Campfire (s'mores) and the Barry Greenberg (coconut chocolate) and the Chocolate Glazed and the Pumpkin Spice Cake. Of all the bites I tried of different kinds, none disappointed. And the kicker- I'm gluten free. I ate these donuts risking pain. It was worth it. read more

While not the first donut place like this in the world, it is certainly a first in STL. Great originals like the "campfire" and simple classics like jelly filled. I am looking forward to trying their chicken and waffle donut. It looks ridiculous (in a good way). Bought a dozen as a birthday treat for my father in law. Everything was great. The only problem was a long wait, they may have underestimates the demand and could have configured the store with an in and out door, and perhaps a longer counter. The will probably need a bigger space if they keep it up. To sum it up. I'll be back and will be bringing friends. read more

I have plenty of great things to say about this place. But BEWARE that when they are out of donuts they close. During the week if they are busier than expected they can close as early as noon. Never hurts to call first to see what is in stock. I believe we had a fantastic experience because we visited on a weekday at about 10:30am. This prevented us from standing in a line and allowed a great level of interaction with the employees. And the donuts are kick ass too. When we walked in and clearly seemed like we hadn't been there before the two employees behind the counter asked if it was our first visit and then where we were from. They engaged us about what we liked and gave us great descriptions about each offering and even a history lesson about the St. Louis Gooey Butter Donut. This is the way customer service should be. Oh yeah, they sell fantastic donuts to go with the great service. The Maple Bacon donut was something I've never had before and can't wait until I can have another. I also picked up some Carrot Cake, Snowball, Boston Cream, Glazed, Triple Chocolate, and Gooey Butter donuts too. They held up well on the five hour trip home and stayed fresh in to the next day. We had one donut left in to the third day and it was in fact stale but if it wasn't then I'd have been worried. Great people, fun spot, and fun donuts that tasted great. read more
It is hard to find a new establishment who consistently delivers not only a tasty product but a unique and friendly experience. Strange Donuts does it all EACH and EVERY time. I tested this theory with multiple visits over the past few months. I wanted to be very sure... also I like donuts. I was one of those loyal social media followers who stalked Strange Donuts months ahead of the opening and even attended a few of the preview events. Strange Donuts is the shining example of new small business and I can only hope they are around for a very long time. Now to the donuts!! Strange offers up classics, creations and strangers. While I haven't managed to make it to the late night showings of the strangers, the concept of chef collaborations for specialty donuts makes me swoon. Classics are tasty and always fresh. The creations is where Strange finds its calling though. You can tell in the taste and presentation that each donut was carefully crafted.My personal favorite is the campfire, a glorious chocolate cake donut dusted with graham crackers crumbs and topped with a toasted marshmellow. Oh and try the mexican hot chocolate. They kicked up the heat on this little wonder. It's amazing. In summary: Go eat donuts, enjoy the friendly goofy staff and support this local business so they can be a fixture in Maplewood for years to come. read more

So I made my way to Strange Donuts on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, strategically right before noon when I figured there wouldn't be a block long line of Strange fans waiting for their fix. My plan was a success! I walked right in and gazed at the selection and chose just two - a classic, cinnamon and sugar cake donut and the Tutti Frutti, an iced cake donut with fruit loops on top. I have to say that the classic cinnamon and sugar donut was one of the VERY BEST cake donuts I have ever had..... and I have had a lot of them over the years. I found the Tutti Frutti to be good,but just a bit too sweet for me. I am a fan and wish these guys all the best and I will be back to try some of the more STRANGE versions and of course more of the classics. read more

Late night donuts! Maplewood is a great hood. There are a lot of creative people who make the area a hot spot for evening activity. Strange Donuts adds to the overall experience. I don't eat donuts that often anymore, and I frankly don't get cute when ordering them. Until I discovered Strange Donuts. My world of round glaze and chocolate long johns was turned upside down! Not to say that a more traditional donut wouldn't be preferred on occasion, but after a late night in Maplewood, SD has become essential. When you arrive at SD, you never know what you're going to get, and many things factor into this. They march to their own beat and aren't very apologetic about it. The earlier you trek to the store, the more likely they will have something you want. Also, they usually have a special. One night I had a Chicken and Waffle Done, a large chicken strip on a cake donut with maple syrup. It was expensive but tasty! And that would be one problem with SD, the cost. You don't buy these donuts in volume. Half a dozen will run you around ten bucks, and even a more traditional dozen is eleven or twelve. Hint: don't buy a traditional dozen. SD is all about unique donuts, and the traditional ones tend to be bland. Another issue would be hours. I find myself craving their donuts at night, no surprise, but they are not always open late. I rely pretty heavily on my Yelp app for store hours because it varies from day to day. More than anything, I just love these guys' swagger! I follow them on Facebook and Instagram, and they do a pretty damn good job marketing themselves. They have cool merch, and they just seem like interesting people. Definitely a fan! Any trip to Maplewood isn't complete without a stop at Strange Donuts. Get your dones, Yeep! read more

The gooey butter donut was one of the best I ever had, but the giant vanilla filled chocolate one was too sweet for me. If it had a different filling I feel like I would have liked it more. read more
On my first visit to Strange Donuts I only tried one donut- The Custard. Because this is one of their "classics" it was only $1 and I was instantly impressed at the value. The donut was delicious and pretty big- like a Boston Cream donut with lots of chocolate icing and yellow custard inside. My friend got a seasonal pumpkin roll that was enormous for $3. They even had gluten-free offerings for my friend. I'm looking forward to returning the next time I'm in St. Louis to try several of their other creations! I'd recommend a stop at this shop for their selection and value, as well as the delicious taste of their donuts! read more

Great prices and great donuts. Probably my favorite joint in Saint Louis. Worth the drive and wait. My only complaint is the size of the shop, which can get quite crowded. Donuts I have tried. Bacon Donut - Need I say more? Mexican Hot Chocolate- Delicious with just a hint of heat. Fat Elvis - Banana and Peanut butter goodness Butterfinger - A little to sweet for my particular taste Camp Fire - Basically Smores in Donut form. There are more but they have slipped my mind at the moment. read more

Tried their gooey butter donut this past weekend at LouFest and it was pretty good! Friendly and helpful staff and interesting flavors to choose from! Next time will try to stop in their actual store location to see a wider variety of flavors to choose from! Thanks! read more

I know that some of the online ordering places like Skip the dishes has them as one of the spots to deliver too. I personally have never tried it but I have just called and ordered then swung by to pick up. Hope this helps!
