I was intrigued by the name of this place. The execution of the donuts left me wanting more. Sure they had some unique flavors but the ones I tried just weren't that great. I had the generic frosted donut with sprinkles. It was okay, I thought the donut was on the dry side. I also had a chocolate frosted Steve. Same issue with the donut, the frosting had a decent chocolately flavor. I also tried the maple bacon and this was my favorite. The donut was still a bit dry but the maple frosting was great and the bacon wasn't limp (as it usually is on these). I also tried the strawberry with cream cheese frosting and a strawberry jelly inside. While I didn't love it, I did appreciate the strong strawberry flavor. To be honest I was underwhelmed. The store is very small with no place to sit. When this place opened the lines were out the door, now I realize why. It's tiny. They had several donuts ready to be eaten at 8pm on a Friday night which is great for late snackys. I like how they put one of each donut out instead of filling cases. We got 8 out of the 12 offered. I just couldn't do a donut filled with yams. All of them tasted fried. Yes I know they are but there are places to get donuts that do not have that tastes. The fat steve ended up being our favorite. I finally found my way to "Strange Donuts." This place isn't close to where I live or usually hang out, so I'm not sure when or if I'll ever make it back. This is strictly pick up and go place! Which is certainly fine, but a bit...wait for it...Strange! But then who cares about that when the place smells like heaven! After Straub's stopped carrying my lusted-after Vincent VanDoughnuts, we came to Strange Donuts for a fix. The staff was really friendly and funny, but the donuts left much to be desired. Honestly, the donuts themselves were just...blah. Regular grocery store quality. Not super moist, not super fresh tasting, just...kind of disappointing. Basic heavy cake donuts. The flavors of the icing and toppings were decent (maple bacon was good), but it seriously tastes like they buy regular store donuts and just dress them with toppings themselves. The shop didn't smell like fresh baked goods which also serves to support that suspicion. I'm disappointed. Gooey butter cake didn't taste like gooey butter cake. Meh. Came on a Friday night around 8:45 knowing we would be standing in a long line before they opened at 9pm. We were there for the collaboration donut with Seoul Taco. The bulgogi donut was amazing! I'm not sure what type of donut they used, but it didn't leave a gross film i my mouth that a usual donut tends to do. The meat and lettuce mix on the burger was an awesome "creation." Creation donuts are $5 each. The other special donut of the night was a cherry amaretto donut. It just seemed like the cherry glaze was on top and didn't have a chance to soak in. The donut was dry and not very flavorful, unless you had a big gloop of glaze. We also ordered a Mexican hot chocolate donut- spicy and chocolaty. It has a major kick. The donut is very dense. Good idea to eat with a glass of milk. These 2 donuts were $2 each. Strange Donuts is fun to go to for the experience of standing in line and trying something new, but this should not be your go-to donut shop. I have to start with the "not so obvious" things about this place, which contributed to my less than stellar score for Strange Donuts. From all the hype, I was expecting a normal donut shop with some flair, some pizazz..didn't happen. Matter of fact, this guy thought the first trip to Strange Donuts would be a great stop to take his wife and mother for breakfast. I was wrong. This location, by definition, is a hole in the wall. No wonder the lines are half way down the block. There is barely room for 3 people to stand and consider their options. There are no seats to sit and have a coffee and a donut, there is no ambiance, it is literally a door, a counter, and a guy (well two guys) dishing out donuts. Yipes! Once we realized this wasn't going to be the breakfast stop we were expecting, we flipped to option B which basically meant grabbing one of each donut we were interested in trying, and then heading off to a nearby pancake house to have a proper breakfast. Good thing we are versatile, because we were disappointed in the lack of even a bench to sit and scarf down one donut! As far as the selection and flavor goes, this was a mixed bag. From memory, there were about a dozen and a half different donuts to select from, ranging from a gluten free "puppy chow" donut, to more traditional looking choices. Our selections varied in taste and quality: Barts Revenge-Better than expected in terms of taste. The butterfinger topping didn't overpower the donut at all, and was almost lacking in all honesty. It tasted like a chocolate donut with chocolate icing, and not much else. Gooey Butter Cake-It was okay. The icing was buttery, but it didn't really capture the essence of a good gooey butter cake for me. The donut itself was also a bit dry. French Toast-again, tasted like a cake donut with powdered sugar on it, but not the "powdered sugar" style you buy at the grocery store, but a sprinkling of powdered sugar, more for effect than anything else. Banana Pudding-not a huge fan of pudding filled donuts, in all honesty, but this one wasn't bad. Definitely better than the previous donuts, but not something I would get again. Captain Chocolate (not sure that's the right name)-it was a chocolate donut, with chocolate icing, and chocolate sprinkles. Nothing strange about it, but it was a good donut. Puppy Chow-Gluten free and very dry. I'm not a fan of puppy chow, this was my mothers selection, but even she wasn't impressed with it. Pumpkin Spice-NOW we are talking. This was a damned tasty donut. I loved it. I want another. Strawberry Cheesecake-another wonderful tasting donut. I love jelly filled so this was a no brainer. Maybe I loved this one most because it was jelly filled, maybe, but still, damned good choice if you are going to go to Strange Donuts. In all there is a lot of potential with Strange Donuts, but there isn't enough appeal for me to make this a regular stop. This is, however, a great place to take an out of towner to show them something different! Sorry to be a downer, but this place did not meet my expectations. From the get-go, I wasn't thrilled about their hours as I'm usually in St. Louis during the afternoon and evenings on certain days. They should call themselves 'Strange Donuts with Strange Hours'! When I finally did make it over to SD, I was excited. But then this weirdo hipster dude behind the counter gives me a dead stare and goes, 'How's it going, man?!'. Ummm okay. So I browsed briefly and made a selection of four of what I believed to be the most popular donuts there: the gooey butter, campfire, blueberry cheesecake and the one with bacon shreds on top. After the quick transaction, I started munching on them on the way to my car, and I just couldn't believe it. I tasted the gooey butter one first, and it was one of those yeast, fluffy donuts with very little topping on it. I thought this was going to be gooey and moist, in cake-donut form. It didn't taste like gooey butter cake at all. Not cool, gang. Same goes for the one with bacon. I like bacon on a lot of things, but it could have tasted better on a cake donut. The campfire one was a cake-donut, so it kind of made up for it. I gave the blueberry cheesecake one to a friend, but he had no reaction. There is one thing I learned after coming here: the big difference between fluffy yeast donuts and the moist, cake donuts. If I want fluffy yeast donuts, I'll just go to Schnucks. Cake donuts are where its at! So again, I don't mean to come off as someone who is hard to please, but this was a well-hyped place and I bought into it. And I'm from Glen Carbon, on the other side of the river. I respect small businesses and I know its a donut shop, but try to stay open at reasonable times. I get it, we were there LATE and I think they close when they run out of inventory... I guess if you want a better selection get there earlier. The donuts are strange, I saw some guy walk out with fruit loops on top of his, and the Yelp pictures tell the story of how diverse the donut selection can be. We tried a Barts Revenge (butterfinger), French Toast, Cocunut, and Gooey Butter. The icing and toppings were unique. But the donuts itself were dry, and crumbled like a stale cookie. Is Strange the new Voodoo????? The long line and wait outside the door was not that bad, 30 min I think we spent in line but regardless the line was moving. The place itself is small. Super tiny with one door for entering and exiting. The decor is "Strange" for lack of a better word. I tried the Bart's Revenge, Gooey Butter, Chocolate, and a Raspberry Fritter. First of all all of the donuts are cake donuts that being said I expected great things inside each doughnut. A mix of very strange things in every bite but sadly the cake donuts were plain. At least the ones I mentioned above. The Bart's revenge was good. The doughnut was cakey. The butterfingers on top were good. The combination of the two were good but I was not blown away. The Chocolate doughnut was also good. Nothing spectacular though. Raspberry Fritter was okay. You can taste the oil it was fried in. It was not overly sweet and you can taste raspberry here and there. Overall it was a fine doughnut. The gooey butter was my least favorite. I have had Gooey Butter cake and I have always loved it. I expected the Gooey Butter doughnut to have a similar type of consistency in the doughnut or at least the same sweetness but it did not. The doughnut part was a simple doughnut. The topping is supposed to be "Gooey Butter" but it was not even close. It was salty, not as sweet and could have EASILY passed for a butter popcorn doughnut. You could taste the saltiness and smell the butter. I will praise the guys working the counter though. They were VERY quick and friendly. They were thankful and apologetic for the long wait outside. Among the chaos of people they were able to get people in and out and replenishing the doughnut supply when things got low. I give the service and the guys behind Strange Doughnuts 4 stars. My husband is an avid donut fanatic and has been following Strange Donuts at pretty much every special event they've been a part of well before they opened the doors. The grand opening was this morning and we got up well before the sunrise to be a part of it all. We were there at 4:45 AM so we could get the sweet tshirt of a freaking dinosaur in a donut spaceship. Yep. Dinosaur + Donut + Space= Amazeballs But we're not here to talk about shirts. We're here to talk about donuts. Strange Donuts has classics, creations, and "strange". At a past special event we had ordered a dozen Gooey Butter donuts. They were obviously a good recipe but not the best. I'm not sure if they had been baking for days to get ready for the event and the donut I had was a bit old or what. But I was not blown away. My husband told me all the others he had were wonderful and I trust the guy. So off we went to the grand opening. I tried the Gooey Butter again and I have to say, it was moist and flavorful and wonderful. I also tasted the Apple (can't remember the name: iSomething) covered in a cinnamon glaze. My favorite by far. And the Campfire (s'mores) and the Barry Greenberg (coconut chocolate) and the Chocolate Glazed and the Pumpkin Spice Cake. I really don't understand what all the hype is about. Before you go understand these are cake donuts, not yeast donuts like you'll find at dunkin donuts is Krispy Kreme. To be fair I've never been a fan of cake donuts, but you'd think with this much hype and creativity, it'd be a life changing experience. I got the campfire donut (which is supposed to be like a smores donut) a butterfinger donut, a cookies and cream donut and the gooey butter donut. I was most excited for the gooey butter, but each of them were really dry, and the gooey butter was just a regular cake donut with some gooey butter crumbs on top, it just made me want to go buy gooey butter cake and not finish the donut. I cannot say enough good things about this place. They have a SOLID business model, and they are doing VERY well... they have a second location in STL, open in Columbia now.... and they are doing pop up locations. They are the best. The owners legitimately care about the products they give their customers and allow them to eat. They have been a part of several very fun events that we have greatly enjoyed being a part of and they are HUGE promoters of local business! We get Strange Donuts just about any time we are feeling naughty and have a cheat day, or heading out in the morning for a little road trip on the weekend. We have tried SEVERAL of their specialty dones and not a single one of them have disappointed. We love the gooey butter cake, the Maple Bacon is my personal favorite, and the mexican hot chocolate done is great! The only problem was a long wait, they may have underestimates the demand and could have configured the store with an in and out door, and perhaps a longer counter. I tested this theory with multiple visits over the past few months. I wanted to be very sure... also I like donuts. I was one of those loyal social media followers who stalked Strange Donuts months ahead of the opening and even attended a few of the preview events. Strange Donuts is the shining example of new small business and I can only hope they are around for a very long time. Now to the donuts!! Strange offers up classics, creations and strangers. While I haven't managed to make it to the late night showings of the strangers, the concept of chef collaborations for specialty donuts makes me swoon. Classics are tasty and always fresh. I have plenty of great things to say about this place. But BEWARE that when they are out of donuts they close. During the week if they are busier than expected they can close as early as noon. Never hurts to call first to see what is in stock. I believe we had a fantastic experience because we visited on a weekday at about 10:30am. This prevented us from standing in a line and allowed a great level of interaction with the employees. And the donuts are kick ass too. When we walked in and clearly seemed like we hadn't been there before the two employees behind the counter asked if it was our first visit and then where we were from. They engaged us about what we liked and gave us great descriptions about each offering and even a history lesson about the St. Louis Gooey Butter Donut. This is the way customer service should be. Oh yeah, they sell fantastic donuts to go with the great service. The Maple Bacon donut was something I've never had before and can't wait until I can have another. I also picked up some Carrot Cake, Snowball, Boston Cream, Glazed, Triple Chocolate, and Gooey Butter donuts too. They held up well on the five hour trip home and stayed fresh in to the next day. It pains me to give this establishment a moderate rating, because I love the idea of what they do. Fun, wacky donuts with unusual flavor combinations? I'm on board! However, the execution was lacking. My husband bought a couple of filled donuts for my birthday, and they were raw. The icing on top, delicious. The filling, delicious. The actual donut? Raw to the point that when we pulled two halves apart the dough stretched out in strings. It was edible, but a bummer. Side note-this is the second time I've had raw dough here. So I made my way to Strange Donuts on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, strategically right before noon when I figured there wouldn't be a block long line of Strange fans waiting for their fix. My plan was a success! I walked right in and gazed at the selection and chose just two - a classic, cinnamon and sugar cake donut and the Tutti Frutti, an iced cake donut with fruit loops on top. I have to say that the classic cinnamon and sugar donut was one of the VERY BEST cake donuts I have ever had..... and I have had a lot of them over the years. I found the Tutti Frutti to be good,but just a bit too sweet for me. I am a fan and wish these guys all the best and I will be back to try some of the more STRANGE versions and of course more of the classics. read more

This is a cute spot to stop in and get your weird errr.... strange on. I have seen this shop so many times and finally gave in to my weakness... donuts. It was mid-afternoon and they had several options, including one made with the actual Surge soda. I'm not a huge filling person, so I went for the cinnamon toast crunch donut. The cereal was a little stale but the taste was delicious. It hit the spot! I'll definitely stop in on a future trip to St. Louis! read more

Donuts are fine, nothing to call home about but not bad either. Their biggest selling point here is probably unique and different recipes. Shop is tiny and wait will be long even if there are only one or two parties in front of you. This is partly because the staff can be really talkative, but mostly I think because there's no chalkboard/sign anywhere that says what the options that day are, so people spend 10 minutes at the counter waffling over each of their dozen donuts. I also wish better food hygiene were practiced here: although hairnets aren't legally required for servers/handlers, in many places they are used anyways because it's kind of gross to be leaning one's hair/hipster beard over the sheet of donuts. read more

Late night donuts! Maplewood is a great hood. There are a lot of creative people who make the area a hot spot for evening activity. Strange Donuts adds to the overall experience. I don't eat donuts that often anymore, and I frankly don't get cute when ordering them. Until I discovered Strange Donuts. My world of round glaze and chocolate long johns was turned upside down! Not to say that a more traditional donut wouldn't be preferred on occasion, but after a late night in Maplewood, SD has become essential. When you arrive at SD, you never know what you're going to get, and many things factor into this. They march to their own beat and aren't very apologetic about it. The earlier you trek to the store, the more likely they will have something you want. Also, they usually have a special. One night I had a Chicken and Waffle Done, a large chicken strip on a cake donut with maple syrup. It was expensive but tasty! And that would be one problem with SD, the cost. You don't buy these donuts in volume. Half a dozen will run you around ten bucks, and even a more traditional dozen is eleven or twelve. Hint: don't buy a traditional dozen. SD is all about unique donuts, and the traditional ones tend to be bland. Another issue would be hours. I find myself craving their donuts at night, no surprise, but they are not always open late. I rely pretty heavily on my Yelp app for store hours because it varies from day to day. More than anything, I just love these guys' swagger! I follow them on Facebook and Instagram, and they do a pretty damn good job marketing themselves. They have cool merch, and they just seem like interesting people. Definitely a fan! Any trip to Maplewood isn't complete without a stop at Strange Donuts. Get your dones, Yeep! read more

This was my first time ever visiting and I was really excited, when I went in immediately noticed you could only choose between maybe 10 donuts, which freaked me out but I noticed they had some interesting flavors you wouldn't find anywhere else (strange) The girl who was at the register was so sweet and friendly, I picked the donuts I thought my family would enjoy. Got to the car and handed them out. As I was handing my son a plain glazed donut I notice the bread to glaze ratio was insanely off. The glaze was so thin it barely had a presence. Immediately after taking bites, we all looked at each other and put them back in the box. The bread is so dense. I guess in the end they maybe just weren't our style because they seem to be quite popular. read more

I was visiting from outta town (Chicago) The donuts & service were good. I had the Black Forest donut & my fiancé had a chocolate & peanut butter donut. They were both tasty. If your in the neighborhood def stop by & grab a few donuts. Although the best thing about this place was the staff. They were great! I lost my wallet while visiting the area. I thought I lost @ the shop. The staff was great with assisting me in looking for it. Especially Jaime. He jumped into a dumpster & went through the garbage looking for my wallet.
