I went in this past week, it was late morning, and I was the only customer. I had my last chemotherapy treatment and I looked like it. A youngish guy came from the back and I said I wanted a fresh donut, that it would likely be the only thing I was going to eat that day, and what did they have to offer? He laughed nervously and said the donuts were made fresh. (Well, duh. But how stale are these that I'm looking at?) There wasn't much selection to chose from. You definitely can't go wrong with anything that you find at Strange Donuts! They have a handful of staple donuts that are always available, as well as a monthly selection of rotating specialties that are mouthwatering to say the least! A little storefront shop, it is very easy to get in and out and grab your sweet sugar fix as well as a cup of coffee or milk to go. I love also that they do collaborations with other places like Hi Point burgers. There is always a smiling staff member there behind the counter, ready to make your choice of donut, nearly impossible by describing each each, and every option, which is not great for someone who is indecisive!! This was the second time that I tried this establishment. I've gone on different days of the week and the last time I tried was on a Saturday morning. The door is unlocked and it is during business hours but no one was inside. We walked around and made noise even calling "hello" to see if someone would come to the front. Nope. Didn't see much of anything and the display case is smaller than my coffee table. I understand that the space they occupy is small but it is super small and if they aren't going to have someone upfront how are they supposed to make any sales? Maybe it's like a lottery and you have to be lucky and walk in when they have someone working. I don't know but I would hands down make the drive to the donut palace in Sunset Hills over this. The donut palace may sell out by 9 AM but at least they have employees working the front, they have a huge selection and their donuts are amazing! I can understand why they are voted one of the best donut companies in the country. These are solid yeast donuts! The plain glaze is honestly the best one to me. But any other donut is just a great. I have to admit I am not a huge fan of modern donuts. While extreme flavors are fun, give me a perfect jelly, boston cream, or chocolate frosted and I'll be happy. That said, the gooey butter donut at Strange Donuts is damn good. I doubt I could eat two of them, they are just too sweet, but I might try to. On the other hand the glazed donut was unimpressive. There's nothing special about either the came or the glaze. I went on Thanksgiving morning. So first, I have to thank them for even being open, but on the downside, there were only three flavors available. When you tell a New Yorker that there's a place called Strange Donuts, where the hours are as strange as the donuts and that getting there at a certain time in order to obtain said strange donut is a must, you better believe I'm going to make you take me there. I came here on a Thursday night around 7 while on a work trip at the suggestion of a coworker. The space is tiny, but when you're only making a dozen or so different types of strange donuts (and closing shop once they've sold out for the night) space isn't really a necessity. The owner was very friendly and welcoming, and gave us the background on the different donut types. There are donuts that they have on the regular, a few seasonal, and then the one special mondo donut to rival all donuts that changes each week. Since we went the week before Thanksgiving, they had a special that had cranberry on the inside of the donut and was topped with smoked turkey from Pappy's (which I didn't get to go to while I was here. I know. I don't want to talk about it.). I can't even begin to explain how well the combination of flavors in this donut worked together. It was like there was a little team working together on my tastebuds to bring the ultimate Thanksgiving in donut form flavor. The other donuts we had were equally well crafted. The maple bacon donut was the perfect balance of sweet and savory, and the gooey butter cake donut was other worldly. I'm so glad I don't live near this place, otherwise I would be 300 pounds. I'll preface this by saying I'm not a huge fan of donuts. I've really only found 2 donuts in my life that I love, one is an original Krispy Kreme when they're hot and the other is from a place that closed a couple years ago. Now I'm adding one more...the butter pecan from Strange Donuts. While I would prefer about half the custard inside, this donut had excellent flavors and it was a soft fresh donut. I tried a couple others: Bart's Revenge, white long john (not sure if this one had a clever name) and the Gooey Butter. The white long john was pretty good, better than Krispy Kreme's, I really liked the thin icing and it wasn't overly sugary. The other two I was unimpressed by. I love gooey butter cake and cookies but this donut was a little dry and didn't have much gooey butter taste. Bart's Revenge was also a little dry, maybe it's the cake donuts. I had never been here so I wasn't sure what to expect but the closet sized interior was a bit of a shock. Luckily it was a nice day and we went across the street to sit in the park. If you've never been, be sure to go when it's not raining or bitterly cold because you'll likely have to stand outside to wait. read more

It's a tiny store with no seating except a bench outside, so we ordered 2 doughnuts to go. They definitely have some unique flavors with punny names! Since I can't have dairy, I'm usually getting vegan donut attempts from shops that are baked or cakey or just straight up not good. But they knock it out of the park with their weekend vegan dones - they taste like the real thing. I'm staying 30 minutes away from the closest Strange but you bet your ass I drove the hour round trip to get a half dozen and a medium coffee (Kaldi's is their coffee supplier, which makes this place even better). They usually have two rotating vegan options and yesterday I had an apple jelly filled done and two vanilla long john dones (festively topped with red and green sprinkles). I got a chocolate fat boy and two original glazed for my dairy-able family members. All six donuts were gone among three people within about three minutes of walking in the door. This location is store-front only, so no dining-in space, but there's tons of benches on Argonne to sit outside and enjoy the weather. Service is always friendly! read more

My top picks were the filled donuts--southern and adam's apple--because the filling added the most moisture to the donut. The others were good, but not necessarily stand-out's. Fabulous donut shop, but since it's small it has a limited selection. There's no place to sit and eat. Luckily weather was nice and not a lot of other people around so we ate across the street in a small park along the train tracks. If anyone else is there you'll have to wait outside because there really is no standing room either. The donuts are a bit on the dry side for my taste but they are fresh stings tasty. Apparently the selection changes from month to month though the vegan and sprinkled donut are there. I had a Girl Scout cinnamon roll. The best Carmel frosting on top and no skimping on it. A few nuts sprinkled with salt and pepper. A very good combination...huge roll. I quite enjoyed out, but not something I need again. The Apple fritter is very similar though light on the apples and no salted nuts. The frosted long john was a disappointment. My daughter loved the bacon maple roll. The gooey cake donut got good reviews as did the sprinkles donut. We also had a butter pecan creme Bismarck. Heavenly.... But even I found it to be highly sweet... almost too indulgent. These are so big two of them fit together to make a square and then take up most of the room in the donut box. There are other flavors and fillings, including Fat Stevens, their version of Long Johns. All look decadently delicious - I've already eaten one (of course I bought many) of the stuffed Gooey Butter. I think maybe I got my dough circle dreams hyped up too much before trying. I was so grateful that they were open after the Kirkwood Turkey Day Run, and perhaps because this is not the main location we were basically eating day old or transported donuts (though when I go to a donut shop at 8am, I feel like they should be relatively fresh). We tried every flavor of "dones" they had that day and pretty much all of them were dry and crumbly and not particularly flavorful (I couldn't take more than one bite of most of the cake ones). The chocolate almond yeast raised was the lone exception. It was lovely. On the "pro" side I thought their prices were totally fair for "gourmet" donuts, especially compared to Chicago. When I visited, like, 5 minutes after opening time after getting off night shift, I ordered a dozen donuts. I've had Strange Donuts before at another location, but a bite or two of one, two... or maybe three donuts on the car ride home jogged my memory of Strange Donuts and had me convinced of one of two things- Either the founder and staff members have already raided Area 51 before September and came out alive with donut recipes aliens had made that the US government seized because the totality of these cosmic recipes were too much for the human senses, or that the founder and staff members are aliens themselves that have escaped Area 51 knowing the cure to cancer and meaning of life that they decided to morph into something all humans love so that humans may live long and prosper. That's right, folks. This place isn't just a shop dedicated to novelty donuts... the bakers are also dedicated to the craft of a damn good donut. The cake is perfect; not too hard and not too fluffy. The icing is perfect (especially on the chocolate Frosted Fat Steve; I don't know what they put in that icing, but mother of God). And to be location specific in the review, the kid at the counter was a nice guy. The Strange Donuts gang, anytime I've ever went, have always given off a chill vibe. You can tell he wanted to be there even though it was 6am and he was helpful. Overall, the chain of this shop is outstanding. The individual location is kinda small, but it's whatever.
