I went in this past week, it was late morning, and I was the only customer. I had my last chemotherapy treatment and I looked like it. A youngish guy came from the back and I said I wanted a fresh donut, that it would likely be the only thing I was going to eat that day, and what did they have to offer? He laughed nervously and said the donuts were made fresh. (Well, duh. But how stale are these that I'm looking at?) There wasn't much selection to chose from. The store is very small and, at this time, it was a mess, grimy and dimly lit. Not appealing at all. I selected a single glazed for nearly $3. I took a bite in the car and got so sad because it was not good. Well, Strange Donuts, I had hoped for some empathy but nope. read more

You definitely can't go wrong with anything that you find at Strange Donuts! They have a handful of staple donuts that are always available, as well as a monthly selection of rotating specialties that are mouthwatering to say the least! A little storefront shop, it is very easy to get in and out and grab your sweet sugar fix as well as a cup of coffee or milk to go. I love also that they do collaborations with other places like Hi Point burgers. There is always a smiling staff member there behind the counter, ready to make your choice of donut, nearly impossible by describing each each, and every option, which is not great for someone who is indecisive!! All the more reason to have to come back so I can try them all!! read more

Tiny storefront but giant flavor. This location is close to home but far enough away to prevent me from over indulging. The selection of drinks nuts rotates regularly. Regulars like the Chocolate Fat Steve, But are now Pony and Gooey Buttercake and on their s visit sit a wildcard Cinnamon Roll with Blueberry icing and crumbled blueberry donuts topping. Friendly service and Hot coffee round out ether experience. read more

Donuts are fresh with unique flavors. The shop itself is a hole in the wall across the street from Kirkwood Farmers Market. Friendly service. Flavors change monthly. Cinnamon roll was $4. While it's more expensive than a grocery store donut, I like to support local business. read more

It's been a while since I stopped in here. The donut themes are fun, but they are lacking in flavor and way too doughy. And way overpriced. $25 for 8 donuts. read more

The donuts look really nice and the shop itself is small but cute. Everyone that works there is very nice and helpful but the donuts themselves are just lacking for the price. Some flavor combinations are weird and I definitely preferred the classic donuts over their special donuts. The donuts aren't bad just too expensive for what you get. read more

The names are punny and fun- the donuts are delicious- and I ate WAYYYY to many! ‍ Those are the marks of a good donut shop! The drunken fat baby was the best! I will be back for that again. I normally stick to healthy attempts for breakfast, but this place, being so close to work for me- may in fact cause me to gain a few pounds! Yummm! read more

Some of y'all reviewers sound like you're the worst at parties. Here's my take on this place: Strange is one of my favorite places ever. Kindest people, best locations, and AMAZING DONES! I drove 40 minutes to get to their store today and was met with a very kind employee and 8 donuts I was drooling over the whole way home. They are a small business who now does delivery to stay alive during COVID-19, showing how far they'll go for their customers. Please visit and grab fresh creative donuts. You will not be disappointed! read more

I can understand why they are voted one of the best donut companies in the country. These are solid yeast donuts! The plain glaze is honestly the best one to me. But any other donut is just a great. Keep in mind the serving of the donut is generous so if you getting a speciality donut it will surely fill you up. read more

This was the second time that I tried this establishment. I've gone on different days of the week and the last time I tried was on a Saturday morning. The door is unlocked and it is during business hours but no one was inside. We walked around and made noise even calling "hello" to see if someone would come to the front. Nope. Didn't see much of anything and the display case is smaller than my coffee table. I understand that the space they occupy is small but it is super small and if they aren't going to have someone upfront how are they supposed to make any sales? Maybe it's like a lottery and you have to be lucky and walk in when they have someone working. I don't know but I would hands down make the drive to the donut palace in Sunset Hills over this. The donut palace may sell out by 9 AM but at least they have employees working the front, they have a huge selection and their donuts are amazing! I would love to try strange donuts but it doesn't look like I will ever get that chance. read more

I have to admit I am not a huge fan of modern donuts. While extreme flavors are fun, give me a perfect jelly, boston cream, or chocolate frosted and I'll be happy. That said, the gooey butter donut at Strange Donuts is damn good. I doubt I could eat two of them, they are just too sweet, but I might try to. On the other hand the glazed donut was unimpressive. There's nothing special about either the came or the glaze. I went on Thanksgiving morning. So first, I have to thank them for even being open, but on the downside, there were only three flavors available. The people manning the counter were friendly and the prices were reasonable for modern donuts. I like Strange Donuts, I just don't love it. read more

When you tell a New Yorker that there's a place called Strange Donuts, where the hours are as strange as the donuts and that getting there at a certain time in order to obtain said strange donut is a must, you better believe I'm going to make you take me there. I came here on a Thursday night around 7 while on a work trip at the suggestion of a coworker. The space is tiny, but when you're only making a dozen or so different types of strange donuts (and closing shop once they've sold out for the night) space isn't really a necessity. The owner was very friendly and welcoming, and gave us the background on the different donut types. There are donuts that they have on the regular, a few seasonal, and then the one special mondo donut to rival all donuts that changes each week. Since we went the week before Thanksgiving, they had a special that had cranberry on the inside of the donut and was topped with smoked turkey from Pappy's (which I didn't get to go to while I was here. I know. I don't want to talk about it.). I can't even begin to explain how well the combination of flavors in this donut worked together. It was like there was a little team working together on my tastebuds to bring the ultimate Thanksgiving in donut form flavor. The other donuts we had were equally well crafted. The maple bacon donut was the perfect balance of sweet and savory, and the gooey butter cake donut was other worldly. I'm so glad I don't live near this place, otherwise I would be 300 pounds. If you haven't experienced strange donuts, I recommend making it a point to get strange here real soon. read more

I'll preface this by saying I'm not a huge fan of donuts. I've really only found 2 donuts in my life that I love, one is an original Krispy Kreme when they're hot and the other is from a place that closed a couple years ago. Now I'm adding one more...the butter pecan from Strange Donuts. While I would prefer about half the custard inside, this donut had excellent flavors and it was a soft fresh donut. I tried a couple others: Bart's Revenge, white long john (not sure if this one had a clever name) and the Gooey Butter. The white long john was pretty good, better than Krispy Kreme's, I really liked the thin icing and it wasn't overly sugary. The other two I was unimpressed by. I love gooey butter cake and cookies but this donut was a little dry and didn't have much gooey butter taste. Bart's Revenge was also a little dry, maybe it's the cake donuts. I had never been here so I wasn't sure what to expect but the closet sized interior was a bit of a shock. Luckily it was a nice day and we went across the street to sit in the park. If you've never been, be sure to go when it's not raining or bitterly cold because you'll likely have to stand outside to wait. read more

Amazing! It's hard to pick favorites but the gooey butter, White Russian and the turtle donuts are definitely up there. I would also like to applaud their dedication to cleanliness via not accepting slobbered on money from blundering dolts set on spreading germs. We happened upon Strange Donuts while walking through Kirkwood downtown to the farmer's market and decided to check them out. It's a tiny store with no seating except a bench outside, so we ordered 2 doughnuts to go. They definitely have some unique flavors with punny names! We tried the Southern doughnut, which was AMAZING, with banana creme filling, and a simpler classic lemon-glazed one which was also delicious. read more

If I could pick one food to survive off of, it would likely be donuts. And this place? An absolute staple for me when I'm in town. Since I can't have dairy, I'm usually getting vegan donut attempts from shops that are baked or cakey or just straight up not good. But they knock it out of the park with their weekend vegan dones - they taste like the real thing. I'm staying 30 minutes away from the closest Strange but you bet your ass I drove the hour round trip to get a half dozen and a medium coffee (Kaldi's is their coffee supplier, which makes this place even better). They usually have two rotating vegan options and yesterday I had an apple jelly filled done and two vanilla long john dones (festively topped with red and green sprinkles). I got a chocolate fat boy and two original glazed for my dairy-able family members. All six donuts were gone among three people within about three minutes of walking in the door. This location is store-front only, so no dining-in space, but there's tons of benches on Argonne to sit outside and enjoy the weather. Service is always friendly! read more

The Kirkwood location is a small location with a good variety of donuts (made in-house), Kaldi's coffee, and milk (chocolate, strawberry, and white). We ordered a half dozen: cinnamon roll, southern (w/ banana pudding), chocolate long john, gooey butter cake, adam's apple (w/ apple filling), and blackberry lime. My top picks were the filled donuts--southern and adam's apple--because the filling added the most moisture to the donut. The others were good, but not necessarily stand-out's. I would pop in for another Southern and cup of coffee though. read more

Fabulous donut shop, but since it's small it has a limited selection. There's no place to sit and eat. Luckily weather was nice and not a lot of other people around so we ate across the street in a small park along the train tracks. If anyone else is there you'll have to wait outside because there really is no standing room either. The donuts are a bit on the dry side for my taste but they are fresh stings tasty. Apparently the selection changes from month to month though the vegan and sprinkled donut are there. I had a Girl Scout cinnamon roll. The best Carmel frosting on top and no skimping on it. A few nuts sprinkled with salt and pepper. A very good combination...huge roll. I quite enjoyed out, but not something I need again. The Apple fritter is very similar though light on the apples and no salted nuts. The frosted long john was a disappointment. My daughter loved the bacon maple roll. The gooey cake donut got good reviews as did the sprinkles donut. We also had a butter pecan creme Bismarck. Heavenly.... But even I found it to be highly sweet... almost too indulgent. So if you get a chance, yes go there. I'd possibly go back in another month to check out the other flavors. read more

I think maybe I got my dough circle dreams hyped up too much before trying. I was so grateful that they were open after the Kirkwood Turkey Day Run, and perhaps because this is not the main location we were basically eating day old or transported donuts (though when I go to a donut shop at 8am, I feel like they should be relatively fresh). We tried every flavor of "dones" they had that day and pretty much all of them were dry and crumbly and not particularly flavorful (I couldn't take more than one bite of most of the cake ones). The chocolate almond yeast raised was the lone exception. It was lovely. On the "pro" side I thought their prices were totally fair for "gourmet" donuts, especially compared to Chicago. They guy working there on Thanksgiving morning was insanely nice; and, I think their flavors are insanely creative, plus they put out interesting gluten free stuff all the time! But...for me and all my in-laws, this just missed the mark. read more

Could you ask for anything better than a Red Velvet donut? How about not one, but two versions of Gooey Butter- one stuffed with strawberry jam , one unstuffed. Donuts change depending on the day. Today also showcased chocolate frosted slabs - no other description possible- with a squiggle of vanilla frosting and a cream filling. These are so big two of them fit together to make a square and then take up most of the room in the donut box. There are other flavors and fillings, including Fat Stevens, their version of Long Johns. All look decadently delicious - I've already eaten one (of course I bought many) of the stuffed Gooey Butter. The crumb was lovely, moist and tasty on its own. Strawberry jam tasted fresh and the icing absolutely tasted like Gooey Butter. I'm thinking donuts for dinner! When I visited, like, 5 minutes after opening time after getting off night shift, I ordered a dozen donuts. I've had Strange Donuts before at another location, but a bite or two of one, two... or maybe three donuts on the car ride home jogged my memory of Strange Donuts and had me convinced of one of two things- Either the founder and staff members have already raided Area 51 before September and came out alive with donut recipes aliens had made that the US government seized because the totality of these cosmic recipes were too much for the human senses, or that the founder and staff members are aliens themselves that have escaped Area 51 knowing the cure to cancer and meaning of life that they decided to morph into something all humans love so that humans may live long and prosper. That's right, folks. This place isn't just a shop dedicated to novelty donuts... the bakers are also dedicated to the craft of a damn good donut. The cake is perfect; not too hard and not too fluffy. The icing is perfect (especially on the chocolate Frosted Fat Steve; I don't know what they put in that icing, but mother of God). And to be location specific in the review, the kid at the counter was a nice guy. The Strange Donuts gang, anytime I've ever went, have always given off a chill vibe. You can tell he wanted to be there even though it was 6am and he was helpful. Overall, the chain of this shop is outstanding. The individual location is kinda small, but it's whatever. I was really excited to try the innovative donuts here, and it was a bonus that it was so close by my work in downtown Kirkwood. However, i have been to this location twice during the week around 8:00 am both times, and the donuts were all stale and old. They looked appetizing, and very cool concept of flavors, but they must make these AT LEAST a day in advance. The donuts I received tasted older than that. Two visits were enough. read more

Amazing donuts and service!!! Everything I've had here is phenomenal. One of STL's finest establishments

I didn't expect much...but was disappointed nonetheless. Stopped in after 7:00 on a Sunday morning. I was the only customer in sight. Full racks of donuts behind the counter. I bought and shared five different kinds: 1. Glazed - dry with minimal glaze. Not quite on par with convenience store donuts. 2. Chocolate frosted long john was shrunken and wrinkled like some donuts get when they are a few days old. Frosting was good but a less than fresh donut at these prices is unforgivable. 3. Blueberry filled with powdered sugar topping had real berry filling. Nice! Not the homogenized goo that passes for jam donut filling these days. 4. French toast was as far as I ventured into "strange" donut territory. Basically a glazed donut with added maple syrup and powdered sugar topping. If I want French toast, I'll eat French toast, thanks all the same. 5. Linz was the best of the lot. At last...a moist donut and real raspberry filling. Only odd thing was the white frosting was gooey. I'd say none of these were worth any where near their $1.25 price. St. Louis has too many really good donut shops for me to return. read more

Meh. I've experienced better. I had heard about this shop for quite some time now, but it's quite far from where I work (I travel to St. Louis for work Monday-Thursday, I don't live here) and the hours are awkward (6AM - 2PM). I FINALLY DECIDED to make the trip on early morning and grab 4 donuts for my coworkers and myself. I got the Dones Ahoy (Oreos/Chips Ahoy), Adam's Apple (apple filling + peanut butter frosting), Strawberry Shortcake, and Gooey Butter. I'm eating them as I type and so far, no good. The Adam's Apple flavor is good but the donut tastes a little stale to me. The Dones Ahoy is pretty cake-y but crumbly and I don't see a hint of Chips Ahoy anywhere. The Gooey Butter donut is supposed to be like a gooey buttercake but it's also crumbly cake-y and I don't really taste much of a gooey buttercake flavor. And I'm about to make my way to the Strawberry Shortcake one but I'm not expecting much. To be honest, I'm pretty disappointed. I hate to compare but if I were craving donuts again in St. Louis, I'd head over to Vincent Van Doughnuts. Their donuts are fresh tasting and the flavors are great. They're also closer to where I work. I was really hoping to try their STRANGER donuts (chicken and waffle? pho? bbq? COOL!) but I guess they serve them sporadically and perhaps not in the mornings. The guy working there was nice though. read more
