Here is your official Keto Prescription review! First off, I want to say that I love the vibe of this place. We had a reservation for a table, but decided to sit at the bar instead. I'm glad we did because the dining area was packed and quite noisy! The bar was way more chill and our bartender Bryan was great. I ordered a Sunday Afternoon cocktail and told him that I'm keto and need to reduce the sugar in it. Without hesitation, he said we can reduce the syrup and increase the club soda. Love this guy!! It was a very refreshing citrus, coconut drink that paired really well with the flavors of our dishes. We ordered the Hainan Chicken and instead of rice, requested baby Bok Choy which was readily accommodated. :) This dish was perfectly made and came with 3 dipping sauces. I stuck to the garlic ginger sauce primarily to keep sugar down and it didn't disappoint. It comes with a bowl of chicken broth which was flavored perfectly and hit that "comfort food" button perfectly. The next dish we ordered was the Hamachi Curry Crudo. This was a nice change from the usual ponzu or truffle ponzu sauce that all other restaurants here offer. It tasted like a mix of light curry sauce with ginger sauce. It was so light yet flavorful that we asked for a spoon so we could drink it all up! Lastly, and definitely the hit of the night, was the Nuoc Cham Pork. Ok ... we recently had some amazing pork at a nearby restaurant, but this topped that. The flavors were soooooo good. Hints of turmeric and other spices ... it was one of those dishes where your eyes get really big after your first bite and first taste. Straits scores 5 avocados on my Keto Meter. My blood sugar was 85mg/dL after eating here and Jeff's was 61! Our dishes were truly keto friendly! We are definitely coming back to try other dishes including their Thai Snapper (hopefully we can get it with the black bean sauce on the side to reduce sugar), the Beef Rendang and Scallop Crudo. Hip new spot in Kakaako with a decent Happy hour. I came here with friends for their happy hour and enjoyed almost everything we ordered. Some of our favorites were loaded nacho style chicken tater tots and roasted pumpkin; both were on the Happy hour menu. We also ordered the Cobb salad which would be enough for two people, not three. The only issue I had with this place is how crowded the seating arrangement was on one side of the restaurant. I had a difficult time hearing the people seated at the same table and would accidentally elbow the people seated next to us. Oops! I was also told that this spot turns into a nightclub atmosphere after a certain time so that might be fun. Parking: Two stories of parking in the same building. Straits restaurant in Honolulu is the latest trendy spot, offering amazing food, drinks, and service. Conveniently located near Waikiki and just a few blocks west of Ala Moana Mall by Dave & Buster's in the Park Ward Village. We kicked off our meal with cocktails. The Sunday Afternoon and Milk & Honey are both unique and dangerously addictive--I could drink the SA all day long! We started with the Yeo's Chicken Salad: simple, refreshing, with moist and flavorful chicken. It was the perfect palate cleanser for the main course. The Singaporean crab was truly the best I've ever had, even compared to those I've tried in Singapore. I couldn't get enough of the sauce--well balanced of sweet, salty, and spicy. Pro tip: Ask for gloves--it's wonderfully messy but mouth-wateringly delicious. For dessert, we indulged in the Pandan Ube soft serve with logan, grass jelly, jackfruit, and coconut milk. It was light, perfectly sweetened, and extremely tasty! I will definitely visit again when I'm in Honolulu and recommend it to others. This review is for the second time I visited Straits. We had made reservations for 7:30PM for a party of 4. We arrived at 7:30PM and checked in but was told that they were behind on reservations and that we would have to wait 10-15 minutes for our table. We noticed that there were seats on the bar side and asked if we could sit there to enjoy a cocktail until our table was ready and they seated us by the bar. For drinks we ordered the You Sexy Thing, You So Corny, Milk & Honey, and the Jillian. If you like creative cocktails I would suggest ordering the "You Sexy Thing", it has fish sauce and red bell pepper juice in it and hints of lemongrass, sounds like a weird cocktail but the flavors worked. After we ordered our drinks by the bar, we were looking over the menu to see what we wanted to order. After we got our drinks we thought our table would be ready soon, but we ended up having to wait another 45 minutes and were not seated at our table until 8:30PM (an hour after our reservation) For starters we ordered the crispy calamari, it was a good portion and tasted great. The batter was very light and flaky and was fried with basil and came with 2 sauces. We also ordered the scallop crude which was my favorite item of the night. It was served with ikura (salmon roe) on top, along with garlic chips corn. The flavors really worked and the presentation was nice. We also got the Singapore satay sticks, those were a bit dry but the sauce it came with was good. After that, we had the crispy chicken lollipops which were so flavorful, crispy and yummy! The last 2 things we got were the garlic noodles and the spicy basil chicken. Both of those were okay, the noodles were a bit too sweet and the spicy basil chicken wasn't amazing. Ambiance was nice, the lighting is good for a date night or night out with friends. The bar was also very nice and perfect for a good instagram picture. Service was decent, aside from the long waits in between. They came by to check on us and refill our waters and see if we needed anything. I would rate this place 5 stars if we didn't have to wait over an hour for our reserved table, but it's understandable that newer places have longer waits. read more

Ok. My party had a horrible experience here and it deserves a proper write up so you all realize that we're not just being vindictive. Some thoughts up front: First, Singaporean cuisine is a jewel in world and SE Asian food culture; this place is to Singaporean Hawker culture what Chili's is to Mexican, if Chili's charged $40+ per entree. Second, management and execution were amateurish. The drink menu was outdated, with drinks no longer available--almost not worth a mention except that... A sizeable portion of their food menu was also not available that evening at first seating, Saturday evening. Our party ordered 3 entrees out of a total of maybe 7 or 8 choices, and were told that all 3 of our choices were not available! The manager came to our table to apologize, and nudged us toward such alternatives as some kind of flatbread (wait, what? How is flatbread Singaporean?). We made do with other appetizers--a chicken satay and an entree steak with chimichurri, served as an appetizer (Again, see first point: how is chimichurri even remotely Singaporean?!?!). Only we were told shortly thereafter that there was actually no chimichurri this evening. We ordered the steak anyway, and just asked that the chef get creative and substitute any sauce of choice. Spoiler alert: he did not; we were served plain steak and fries. (Cooked properly, to be fair.). As for the chicken satay, we actively debated whether the sauce was a satay or there was an error. When it came time to order entrees, one of us attempted to order a salad from a list of them on their menu, only to be told that none of the salads on the menu were available. The waiter turned to me--I was leaning toward the salmon--but I was then told that there was no salmon. We eventually settled on our respective compromise orders. And later, as our entrees were being served, the waiter did inform us that one of our unavailable appetizers could be prepared. In any event, the entrees were fine and competently prepared, but only remotely and with active imagination what I would consider Southeast Asian food. If there was anything salvageable from the evening, it was our waiter, who had the unenviable job of defending his management and kitchen--which he ably did. Our service deserves a solid 4.5-5. He's the one thing keeping this review from being a single star. Again, this was a Saturday evening, and we were seated at about 6:30, so this should not have been a slow or off night. Yelp recommended this place and I had been hoping for the longest time to find a restaurant that served genuine Singapore-style cuisine. Well, this place lived up to my expectations - the Hainanese Chicken Rice, Laksa and Sambal Onchoy were the real deal. I wasn't too excited about how the rendang was presented but the other dishes and the desserts made up for it. Our servers, Mikey and Shari (hope I got the spelling correct) were excellent and extremely patient! Enjoyed dinner - my husband and I shared one their signature dishes - the Hunan Chicken and a Fathers Day/Weekend special Vietnamese Ribeye. The Hunan Chicken was comfort food at its best. It came with a delicious hot chicken broth you can pour over the rice and chicken or sip with utter content which I did. Of the 3 sauces condiments I liked the chopped ginger and lemongrass combined with the shoyu sauce best. The chili sauce added heat if you prefer spicy food. The Ribeye was good but kind of on the fatty side. It was cooked to medium perfection. The herb salad that accompanies it is very light, refreshing and dressed with aome spice. The bacon tomato chutney sauce topping the steak was very good! Will need to come back to try their other dishes. Do not order chili crab through any delivery service or odds are take out. Unlike actual chili crab where it's tossed with the sauce in wok. The take out version is just a plain boiled crab with sauce on the side which doesn't give it a chance to infuse into the crab. I get it makes it messier to put in a container but if your crab is small enough that it fits in a take out container there is no excuse especially since you doubled up on the container. I should note that I order 10 minutes or so before cut off on uber. So it could have just been a lazy chef. read more

The food was so delicious! Has a lot of Thai and Malaysian flavors and it was cool to see how they plated each dish and put their own spin on it. My favorites were the straits frites (fries), the garlic noodles, and the pandan coconut rice. These are must-try's if you plan to visit!! The fries had a lemongrass flavored aioli that tasted like nothing I've ever had! The pandan coconut rice was so fragrant and had that hint of coconut! It paired well with all the dishes and I found myself eating it on its own. As for the rest of the dishes, I didn't love the beef rendang, spicy basil chicken, and spicy street noodles. The flavors were good but didn't have that wow factor the first three had. The people and environment make this place a 11/10. The waiters were so sweet and attentive! They would check in on us and make sure we had everything we needed! That plus the dim lighting created the perfect mood for a birthday celebration. It felt sophisticated and fun at the same time. My first experience with straits Honolulu was back in March of 2024. However, my impression has changed from recently visiting straits a week ago. We arrived around 5 pm. I believe they were preparing to transition to dinner and there was only a few tables there. Not busy. We ordered the garlic noodles, lollipop chicken, and roti prata. The flavors did not wow me from what I remembered. Our table ordered a few drinks and for the 5 of us, our bill came out to $300 or so. I'm unsure if it was worth it. But Overall, I'm giving a 3 star because the server was great, it's do-able, and a good stop if want a quick bite before heading to the movies next door. read more

They are located in ward village entertainment center on the street level where big city diner used to be. The ambience really makes this place special. It's colorful and has lots of greenery. You feel like you are in an exotic space. Our server was nice he shared that he used to work across the street at Jinya but this place is better lol! I ordered a drink without elderflower syrup as I'm allergic. The server checked with the bartender and was able to make me the drink without it. To start, we ordered the chicken lollipops, Roti prata, and the garlic noodles. For our entree we ordered the Hainan chicken, the coconut shrimp fried rice, and a side of chicken rice. All the food was tasty and the portions sizes were perfect for sharing. I really enjoyed the chicken dishes. I couldn't eat the shrimp fried rice due to my shellfish allergy but everyone seemed to enjoy it. The chicken rice was interesting as it had the flavor from the hainan chicken and was delicious! Located in Ward Shopping Center in the old Big City Diner location, this new concept restaurant has ample parking as it's located right by Whole Foods and Dave and Busters. The restaurant has a modern and upscale vibe. Seeing how many foodie accounts were posting about this place, I was excited to try it. Overall, I was a bit disappointed in terms of quality and price point. Some dishes were good but not worth the price. Service/Venue: The restaurant itself was nicely decorated but not exactly the best lighting for photos in the evening as it's dimly lit. As the plates were huge, there was not a lot of space for dishes to fit. When the room is packed with customers, it's quite difficult to walk around the tables say to exit or run to the bathroom. There was a time I was awkwardly standing to get back to my table because the only open way was used by staff to take orders or drop off dishes. A lot of time we had to shift dishes around to make room. The staff was friendly and was attentive to refilling water or taking more orders. Food: Best dish was the Laksa Noodle Soup and I enjoyed it had a kick to it. The sauce was on the creamier side and the spices complimented the peanut butter in it. The noodles had a firm texture to it. The dry fried eggplant was cooked perfectly but lacked a little on seasoning as the eggplant was cut into thick slices. The Singapore crab with the chili sauce was a bit on the sweeter side. The crab seemed fresh but it was difficult to eat with all the sauce. The Singapore Crab was so messy, everyone on the table got splashed with the sauce. It did seem a bit weird how it was upscale vibes yet you had to eat this dish with your hands. I feel like gloves and a bib would be a good option. The bread buns were a little crunchy and on the sweet side. When they brought the dishes out they didn't really explain what the sides were for such as the bread and soup. The beef rendang was tender and the Pandan grits were unique and flavorful but nothing screamed amazing. The Hainan chicken was soft but with so many sauces on the side it was unclear how it should be dipped. The rice that came with the chicken was nice and flavorful though. Pricing: $80 for crab?? I was a little disappointed the crab body had no miso in it. For a group of four each person only got 2-3 legs each. Honestly overall the food was of good quality but none of the dishes aside the laksa was super amazing to me. I just couldn't justify the pricing for all the dishes.
