We went to The Green Goddess in search of a replacement for our old, ugly, cracked, oversized,…read morecalcium crusted , algae infested, splashing monster of a patio fountain. We found The Green Goddess website and they're nearby. I was dreading the whole thing, thinking we wouldn't find anything that would work. And then there's the whole take-it-out and make-the-new-one-fit-the-hole issues, what about the plumbing and pump and so on. Hubby is much more level-headed, so we went. Wow, the business is so much bigger than you can see from the street! Excellent selection. We wandered around, trying to find what we liked. Such an amazing variety of working fountains on site! We saw one that was perfect, a design that would eliminate the splashing and cleaning drama, and a better size for our space. But wrong color. Along came Sara Cervantes to assist. Good grief, she knows everything to know about this stuff! She walked us all around the grounds showing us pots that would work, and they could make it into a fountain. We made the selection, she had guys come with fork lift to load it up, we made quick decisions about installation date, and BOOM we were done. Got great advice on maintenance. The installers came on the chosen day, dismantled and removed the old monster, and did a beautiful installation job. All of the employees are incredibly knowledgeable, professional, helpful, and nice. Couldn't be happier! Just go, already!

Taking away a star today...probably won't go back…read more I was extremely disappointed with the manager today -- the Harry Potter look-alike. I found his attitude condescending and felt like he was speaking down to us, which is especially disappointing considering we shop at this store almost every week. An employee had been helping us with a woolly butterfly bush that had obviously been there for a while and was growing significantly sideways. We were concerned about whether it would recover. The employee was very helpful, said he thought it probably would, but understood our hesitation and suggested that we ask at the counter if they would consider a small discount. So we did. The manager came out and told us, "I could have sold that for full price yesterday." Okay... then why is it still sitting there today? He went on to say that he would give us the discount only because his employee had told us to ask, but that in his opinion the plant was not discountable. The discount was 15% on a $29.99 plant. That comes to approximately $4.50. Let that sink in. A regular customer who shops in your store almost every week, whose large backyard is filled with plants, flowers, and trees purchased from your business, was made to feel uncomfortable and talked down to over $4.50. The money was never the issue. We were concerned about purchasing a plant that might not make it, and one of your own employees suggested we ask. Instead of simply handling a very minor request graciously, the manager turned it into an unnecessarily unpleasant interaction. Apparently $4.50 was worth risking the goodwill of a longtime customer. I purchased the plants we already had and then left. I continued on to Home Depot and purchased the rest of the flowers I needed there. All over $4.50. Sometimes customer service costs a business far more than the tiny discount they were reluctant to give.

Having seen this place many, many times when coming back down I-17 from my trips to Cave Creek…read more(ironically, nursery trips), I never seemed to have the time to stop in until recently. Additionally, it wasn't especially easy to get to, as you need to exit (if going Southbound) well before you can see it. If you drive past going Southbound, your options are going back Northbound to Dixileta and then taking the Southbound frontage road back toward Jomax, OR continue South and exit at Happy Valley, thereafter taking the surface streets (35th Ave.) North. The lacking highway infrastructure leaves something to be desired, and it's definitely not their fault, but that is honestly how I ended up taking this long to stop in, despite driving by numerous times. That out of the way, I definitely think it was worth stopping in, and was quite glad that I finally made the time. There is a fairly good selection of plants here, including cacti and succulents, but my draw is always the agave, one of my favorite plants to grow in our challenging climate. I'm always on the lookout for something I don't have, or something new or rare in the trade, as all manner of interesting hybrids and variegates have become increasingly popular in recent years. While the website mentioned a few varieties of interest to me, including A. deserti and A. utahensis, both of which I'd been in the market for, I wasn't able to find any. I did, however, come across some nice specimens of A. palmeri (why is this so hard to find in retail?) and A. montana (neither of which is on the website, so a nice surprise!). I already have the latter, but bought one as a gift for someone else, and grabbed a pair of the A. palmeri for myself. While fairly variable as a species, this particular selection of A. palmeri was exactly what I wanted, with beautiful bud imprints on the leaves and wicked marginal spines. Some other goodies I saw, which did not go home with me due to space considerations, included some very nice A. asperrima ssp. asperrima (A. scabra), A. 'Sharkskin' and, intriguingly, the not-so-common, typical form of A. lophantha. Plenty of places carry the 'spendida' and 'quadricolor' variety, but it has been a while since anyplace I've been had the typical variety, which grows much larger and seems to be a hardier plant. Another favorite that seems less common these days was A. zebra, which are always fantastic lookers, with their vicious marginal spines, twisted terminal spines and rigid, scabrous leaves. Additionally, they had some very nice, specimen sized A. tequilana. Another surprisingly not-so-common species. Last but certainly not least, I spotted another gem hiding in the corner somewhere. Unless my eyes deceive me, I'm pretty sure that was A. vivipara, sometimes confused with A. angustifolia. Definitely do not see those too often, so that was a nice Easter egg of sorts. Lastly, I must call out the lovely stand of bamboo they have here. Finding agave and bamboo in the same place is always a win-win while nursery hopping, at least for me. Near as I can tell, it was B. oldhamii, which seems to thrive even in our summers. With everyone as friendly and helpful as they were, and now that I know how to get to this place, I will definitely try to make it part of my regular rotation and stop by more regularly. If you're in the area and looking for some plants you might not find elsewhere, I highly recommend checking them out.

After ordering we were told by Jennifer that they would be placing a batched order with Henri Studios from CA next week. Ok no problem. She also explained that it would take 4-6 weeks to get it in. We were fine with that too. In the meantime, we had our entire courtyard redone. On 2 Dec I called and left a message with Jennifer to find out when the fountain would be in. No call back. So I called again on the 3rd and spoke to Sophrona. She said the fountain never got ordered! We were so upset. She said that Henri Studio the manufacturer told her they could get in here in 3 weeks, (that was a lie from Henri Studios). Sophrona said they would give us free delivery and install because it was their fault on not ordering it. That helped easy some of our disappointment. Thank you Sophrona! Back to Henri Studios saying they would have it in 3 weeks was a joke. Three weeks would have been 23 Dec. You know nothing gets done during the holidays and this was true for the fountain. Cory came out to adjust the fountain since it was splashing so far out onto the travertine. The guys that installed it turned the flow volume the wrong direction for more water not less. Cory figured this out instantly. He also put a clamp on the hose to restrict the amount of water being pumped up to the waterfall. It all works a lot better now. Thank you Cory! We really appreciate the after-install customer service! If you order from them, make sure that your order gets submitted when they say the order is being placed. We love the fountain it just took way too long to get!

I truly cannot thank him enough for his years of support, and I was so sad to see him leave his local role with the nursery. Honestly I haven't found a "new LP" since he left. His dedication, customer service, and willingness to go above and beyond set the bar incredibly high. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill. So, consider this my official posting: I'm taking applications for a "new LP". When we replaced our old Palo Verde, we went with a Desert Willow - which has been extremely happy in its new home. We ended up getting the warranty on this new tree and recently they changed their plans. I still don't know all the ins and outs of it, but I do know they make several visits to ensure your tree is set up for success. The staff are great and can do the work even if you're not home. They'll leave you a "report card" so you know how your tree is doing. Overall the warranty was good, but I'd definitely favor it for plants that have a harder time adapting to the desert. Oh how useful this plan would have been for some of my problematic trees in the past. I do think they should have a "lite" warranty for desert plants as I feel most of them tend to be pretty fool proof on their own and don't necessary NEED check ups. I stop by often to check out what's new in the nursery and love when they run promotions for free fertilizer products with a $49 purchase.
