If you get excited about instagramming your food -- look no further! If you like decent food, look further! The vegan / gluten free treats here are some of the most exciting to look at in Brooklyn, they look homemade, organic, and have beautiful colors. For months I've been trying each one in a desperate attempt to make it taste good, alas, each one is more crumbly, dry, and tasteless as the next. It's a shame. I have gone in and tried to order food from the dirty little menu in front of the register (it is food-stained and gross, Instagram it!). The go-to menu item is the smashed avocado on toast -- what do you get for $7? One piece of "homemade" bread with half an avocado, a drizzle of oils, three bean sprouts, two radish slices, and a sprinkle of spiced peanuts and some cumin powder. For an extra two dollars you can add a cold soft boiled egg. That comes to $10 with a tip. So for $10 you are left extremely unsatisfied. I'm not cheap, I'll drop more than that on a cocktail, but when it comes to breakfast and portion to cost, this place is a rip-off. What are you paying for? Asides from the rude staff, you go into this place to get the full on Brooklyn Pinterest experience. It doesn't get much worse (better?) than this place. They have raw wood, cement, paste-colored pillows, poorly made furniture (made of pallet wood perhaps?). It all looks terrible, is uncomfortable, will not age well, and is already well past it's hip-2008-prime. Did I mention they sell shriveled up succulents out of their "Work Co-Op" in the back. It's as if the owners saw Portlandia and didn't realize it was satire. I realize this place has stayed afloat for a while now, it's always packed, mostly repeat customers who buy their coffee, which is pretty good! It seems though, from the number of times I have tried to make this place for work for me, it's filled with AirBnB tourists who are taking pictures of their food, or new-to-Brooklyn'ers on their MacBooks updating their resumes or checking the current balance of their trust fund. read more

When this place opened I didn't think I would like it. Among other reasons, their extensive bakery options seemed geared towards vegans or people avoiding gluten (I'm not either). Vegan/GF baked goods, in my limited experience, are too sweet and the textures are often not as good as with wheat. Despite my initial reservations, this has become one of my favorite cafes. Their baked goods are very flavorful, well-made and not overly sweet. Their espresso beverages are consistently great, as are their teas. The food-food is also very tasty. I wouldn't mind a tiny bit more food in their bowls, but the portions are perfect for my wife who orders them often. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is pleasant. read more

This time the latte was expertly crafted. And so was the food! AMAZING! Almond milk is hard to steam, I get that, but you wouldn't have known from this barista! Very highly skilled. The chef? in the kitchen, or wherever the chef is, needs to be commended. They've sourced their ingredients well, crafted a great spring menu, and plated the food beautifully. Gentrifier nonsense. Another review of this place praises it as some kind of hipster oasis in "grubby" Bed Stuy. It seems that's the quietly segregated clientele Stonefruit attracts, and the prices and ambiance don't welcome long time residents either. I am a "clean plate club" type of eater and hate to waste food but really couldn't finish the lavender muffin I got when I tried to give this shop a chance. Way too gritty and way too much floral. Beverages lean on a similar model--adding florals and herbs in unbalanced amounts. This type of cafe could be in any city with the same type of food and the same white bright interior and the same sorta hip crowd. Stop by a long time local business with something unique to offer instead. read more

I come here for the gluten-free, vegan fruit and oat bar but then always end up ordering the golden milk latte too. They're both so consistently good. Did you know you can buy a container of their whipped tahini to take home and use as a spread or just eat by the spoonful? Just trust me on that one. Service is always very pleasant and present. I was told I couldn't order the gluten-free side and the avocado side because it's "too similar" to a (more expensive) meal on the menu. The young woman with pastel hair said that that would be "cheating" and that I was being "tricky". We went back and forth for a bit, but I gave in because she was adamant about not letting me order sides. I ordered a completely different full meal off the menu (more food and much more money than I wanted to spend). The food and drink were fine, and it's nice to see plants but I wouldn't go back to Stonefruit even though it's in my neighborhood. EXTREMELY mediocre cafe. As I approached the counter, I watched the male cashier get really snippy with the person picking up their cappuccino. Then he gave an exasperated sigh and rolled his eyes at me as I stepped up to order. We got two cold brews - one large and one small. He charged me appropriately and then handed me two coffees with the same amount of coffee in them...saying "one large, one small." They were the same cup. My partner had asked for a little bit of cream when we ordered, and then kindly asked again when the cashier put the coffees out on the counter. The cashier rudely pointed out that he can put the cream in himself. The two pastries we received were disgusting and soggy...and overpriced. This was my first time and I am never returning. I hope this place closes down so we have a shot at getting a new, lovelier place in the neighborhood. Plenty of coffee shops to choose from if you are in the area. This place has great unique dishes! It is nice to find a place that you can get quick food that it different than a normal egg sandwich. We came here because we wanted both good food and espresso, however, their espresso machine wasn't working, so we had to get drip coffee or chai latte, which were medicore. They use Counter Culture beans!! -Avocado smash toast (no egg): really beautiful, came out on the cutest plate with a rabbit on it. The taste was amazing and unique, with different seasoning to make it spicy and nuts to add a crunch. Maybe the best avocado toast I've had so far (and I've had a lot). -Banana bread with maple glaze: the glaze was a nice flavor, but made the bread too sweet. The bread itself had a creamy texture and the banana taste was strong. I also tried part of my friend's mini bundt cake and it tasted really great, not too sweet, even with the strawberry glaze. Presentation was also nice, with pink rose petals sprinkled on top. I trudged there a day after the blizzard hit. To be honest, if I had known how great it was a day earlier, I would've easily walked (or ran) through the blizzard to go there as well. read more

I would never have believed avocado toast could be so good. We took two avocado toast with eggs, one salad on side and two iced tea (one mint and one lavender). The avocado toast were great, the bread was really soft, and the avocado was just seasoned as we like it. The salad was amazing, it looked really simple in the first place but we both loved it, I even wrote down the ingredients to try to do it back home. The mint iced tea was just ok, but the lavender one was really good. I wish every avocado toast were as good as these! We also stayed there for about two hours to work and the place is great for that even tho we had to stay in the front room because I couldn't get some wifi signal in the back room. read more

I also couldn't resist trying one of their cookies - GF and vegan , like most ( but not all !) of the treats in this place. It was delicious , very moist ! Stopped in today for a cold brew during lunch break . The place is super cute- hanging string lights overhead, community tables, and very chic! The desserts on the check out counter looked phenomenal but with bikini season around the corner I decided to stick to my original plan of a cold brew. My friend was starving and opted for a veggie bowl. I asked for my my cold brew with oat milk and the cashier looked at me like I had two heads even though I saw the Oatly carton right in front of her. When she handed me the cold brew I was skeptical bc I saw a few ice cubes, but figured it surely must be super cold already so there would be no reason for a crazy amount of ice. Upon taking a sip I realized a few things- 1. She BARELY added oat milk (if any) and 2. The coffee tasted like regular room temp coffee with ice cubes that were fighting to cool down the drink. I figured I would just add extra almond milk and call it a day (a caffeine fix is a caffeine fix after all lol) When my friend got her order it was HILARIOUS- the portion was so tiny (especially for the price) that she thought it was a joke! She was so mad but luckily we stopped by Dough doughnuts on the walk back- which definitely lifted her spirits lol. When she ate her food she said it was "ok, nothing special and definitely not worth it". My coffee was also not worth a second visit. THE TOASTS HERE WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! Had a whitefish toast here and it was easily the best toast I've had in a year. The monk bowl was eh in comparison (others have rated it highly, but thats only when you dont have the flavorful toast to compare it to) - Prices are high but this is yuppie gentrified brooklyn, so not much of a surprise - the blonde lady who runs the plant room is snooty/unfriendly/unapproachable as hell, and everytime I asked her a question I felt as if I was disturbing (?) her decoration routine. SO HAPPY I STUMBLED INTO THIS CAFE ON MY WAY TO YOGA THE OTHER DAY. It has now become a regular spot for me. This cafe is so great! Great coffee, teas, treats, etc. The decor is really cute and warm, the staff is super nice, it is a really pleasant environment to be in. But that's not even the best part---in the back room they sell succulents and hanging plants. They also have a big, long table you can sit and work at surrounded by the plants they sell. I can't believe I haven't written a review of Stonefruit yet, seeing as I've been going like thrice a week (or more... aherm) for the past few weeks! I've always loved the vibe here at Stonefruit - it's beautiful inside, everyone's friendly, they have cool art, it's got a good energy. I'm obsessed with the decor. They have seating options in the cafe, as well as a long table in their connected floral shop (the back room) that's also available for cafe-goers to grab a seat. No matter where you sit, you'll have a gorgeous view of plants and artwork and natural light. Note: it can get pretty packed in here so you may not always be able to find a seat! This is one of the only places in the neighborhood that has decaf espresso so it's perfect for me since I've been cutting down on caffeine. Even better, Stonefruit introduced me to oat milk and I'm legitimately obsessed now. Oat milk decaf latte is my go-to and I'm so impressed by how frothy oat milk can get while also complementing the flavor of the espresso! (I personally don't love almond milk in my coffee cus it tastes burnt to me.) As for food, my fave thing is their cold oat and chia pudding (I think in the winter, they've switched to a more normal hot oats dish, but stay tuned for the cold oats in the spring?). It's so good and I totally stole the idea to do overnight oats with chia seeds for that extra boost to texture! My other fave is the avocado toast topped with a soft-boiled egg. It's delicious and topped with dukkah-seasoning (an Egyptian spice blend) that is a lil spicy and VERY spice-y (harhar, I'm funny). It's suuuuper filling, too, when you add the egg on top! The oat and chia pudding is still super filling because of the nuts and fruits but it feels lighter. Just depends on what you're in the mood for! They do "breakfast all day" so those items are available any time you drop in. I have been meaning to try to whitefish toast as well, but haven't yet! Likewise with all of the delicious-looking baked goods - they look so good but I haven't had a chance to eat one yet. Another AWESOME thing about Stonefruit (among many, many awesome things) is that they rented out the space after hours for a weaving workshop. They had the sign posted at the florist counter and I decided to give it a go. It was SO much fun and the space is perfect for doing a workshop like that. Came in because of the decor and was not disappointed! Although it does get busy and crowded in the morning they do have more seating hidden in the back by the bathroom. It's like a indoor garden with lots of plants. I didn't know this till the 2nd time I went in. Price range for coffee is very affordable and reasonable. $3-5. Food is very appealing! Although my bread was a little over toasted it wasn't a big deal. The only part I didn't like was the confusion when my order came out. I wish they were more organized. They just put multiple orders on the counter. I didn't know which order was mine. I accidentally grabbed someone else's order that came before ours because they only brought one of our orders first.
