If you are looking for someone who is knowledgeable and honest, you should go to John. Don't be discouraged by a few one star reviews on here...look at the work he did and the FIVE STARS reviews from all of his clients, it speaks volumes. At first, when I called him, he said that his work is expensive. I felt a little uncomfortable and thought that how does he know how much I am willing to pay for this project. But then I realized that if someone who is brave enough to say such a thing, he must be good at what he is doing. Besides, I believe in "you get what you paid for". So I called him right back and explained to him what I wanted to do. He came to my house the next day and spent a good amount of time inspecting the property. He did not give me a quote but said it is not worth doing what I wanted to do. He gave me advise on alternative solutions and provided valuable information that I would not have known otherwise. After this experience, I feel like John is the only one that I would trust to do work for my forever pool. Called to get an estimate. He asked questions about the pool and then hardscaping and landscaping. He then explained they were booked through the summer. I said that was fine and I would still be interested in getting at least a preliminary quote as we were kind of expecting that. He then started the whole well you might be better off calling the other guys because they are cheaper and I only do high end work thing...way to assume our project potential without even knowing our budget. We were going back and forth on exactly what to do with our 1970's pool. Initially we were just going to have the interior replaced, including the tile. We got pricing from Adams Pool and AquaGunite and they were both very close. After speaking with my friend about his experience with John, I decided to meet with him to discuss other options. Let me start by saying, comparing Stonebridge to companies like Adams, Royal, AquaGunite, etc... is like comparing apples and oranges. They are not on the same level. Think of it like comparing a Ferrari to a Honda. John had a vision for our pool and although it entailed much more work and money than we originally figured we ultimately ended up going with John for our project. John was clear in communicating pricing, time frames, sequence of work and would always answer the phone when I called. We ended up adding and deleting scope and John was 100% fair in his pricing for both additive and deductive change orders. Believe me, I scrutinized everything.... John provided very fair and honest pricing which is hard to come by these days. The finish product is truly incredible. Stonework is flawless, pool design is off the charts, and the sheer power and performance of the equipment is unbelievable. The waterfalls, LED lighting, spa jets, spa fountain, in floor cleaning system, solar system, redundant in wall returns, travertine decking, and diving rocks are something I could have never imagined nor do I think any other pool builder I talked too could have imagined. John also got through the Woodside Bldg Dept which is no easy task! Now all this comes at a price so if you are looking for a bare bones, cheap pool installation / remodel contractor, John is not your guy. However, I feel like John's pricing is fair for the work he provides which again is above and beyond anything you will see from the big box competitors. Unmatched workmanship. Here are some details of our project. We have a free form, 35,000 gallon pool with a separate spa that overflows into the pool behind boulder wall. The scope of the project was a complete remodel which took about 7 months (majority was the stone work not the actual pool) to complete and included the following: 1) Demolition of existing spa, raised pool wall, and interior plaster, decking, piping, etc.. 2) Installation of new spa at opposite end of pool. New spa included (4) new in floor cleaning heads, (6) upper jets on separate pump with dedicated booster pump, (4) lower jets on separate pump with dedicated booster pump, fountain on separate pump, and new LED lighting. The power of this spa is amazing. I have been to numerous spas/hotels and I have never experienced the type of power this spa has. Oh, I forgot to add that the spa is located 115' away from the equipment room. John's plumber Raphael did an incredible job with the plumbing and equipment installation. He usually needs 28' of wall space for the amount of equipment we had going in. We only had about 1/4 of that space for him to work in and he somehow did it. Pumps are on custom stands, etc.. Really impressive plumbing job. 3) Installation of boulders on 40 lineal feet section of pool. There were about (25) boulders that varied in size and shape. They smallest weighed about 1,500lbs and the largest was almost 10,000lbs. Within the boulders we have (3) separate waterfalls that are on a dedicated pump and return. John personally placed and arraigned the boulders and they look amazing. The waterfalls are classy and functional. It is a very natural look. 4) Installation of new raised pool wall (approx 80 lineal feet). This was a serious undertaking and John and his crew did not cut corners. They epoxied the rebar in to the existing pool beam both horizontally and vertically. Compared to the previous wall that was cinder block this thing is bomb proof. And needed to be since we added almost 50,000lbs of boulders on top of it. 5) Install pebble tech finish, solar, in floor passive heating/cleaning heads. 6) Installation of new 10' diameter beach entrance with built in umbrella stand and multiple in floor cleaning heads. This really gave the pool a unique look and tied the raised wall / stairs into the pool like never before. 7) Installation of roughly 2,000 square feet of travertine as well as 2-1/2" bull nose for entire pool coping. John told us all the benefits of Travertine and I must say that after using the pool the past few weeks, everyone is TRUE!!! It is very smooth to the touch yet not slippery at all when wet and stays unbelievably cool to the touch even after hours of sunlight beating down on it. Glad we listen to him... 8) Installation of travertine over the top of existing stairs - there were (13) steps that were about 10' wide each. It has been almost 2 months since John completed our backyard renovation. He did an amazing job and gave us the backyard of our dreams. We love it so much that we chose not to go away this summer because our backyard feels like a resort. John's vision for our backyard was a hundred times better than the vision that we had. Unless you are a pool builder, you don't know what you don't know. But John does. He showed us all the possibilities of what we could do with our backyard to make it look amazing. We did a full backyard renovation which included building a pool and spa (including a fountain and waterfall), an outdoor kitchen, pavilion, and new landscaping. This was a major renovation and like any project, there were some minor hiccups along the way. John was fair in working things out and this is one of the many reasons why I recommend him. You never know what's going to happen when you work with someone new, especially when it's a big project. Will they shortchange you on the project details? Will they try to take advantage of you? John was a true professional and responsive during the entire process. John continuously checks on the building progress, he stands by his design and commits to delivering you something that he's proud to have built and that you will absolutely love. My husband wasn't so sure about going with John when we first selected a builder but he tells everyone how great he is now. I called to make an appointment to start the process of getting a quote for my new pool. (This was actually the third quote I was getting, as I always gather competitive bids before I choose a contractor). Before he would set a date/time to meet, the man who answered the phone actually told me that he would have to meet with my husband, because the project would involve a lot of money, and it would involve plumbing and wireing.... Met with several pool builders, and ended up picking John. He's a real artist when it comes to pools, and has been building high-end pools as long as anyone. We just finished the excavation and starting working on the plumbing, and I have been very happy with John. He's not the cheapest builder, but he does some of the best stonework I've ever seen, really knows how to design the perfect custom pool to fit the yard, and knows how to get his contractors working quickly and responsibly. John called me back on Sunday which was also Mother's Day. How many contractors / owner do you know that will do that? He does great custom work and have extensive experience with beautiful high end Resort type of pool backyards. We were not ready for the large project he specialize in. However John was really honest and nice enough to give us good advice and tell us things to avoid and be careful with when looking for a pool contractor. Maybe in a few years with more savings we can have the pool backyard of our dreams at which we will for sure come back to John. After interviewing about 5 pool companies, i recently decided on Stonebridge pools. John Rigo is very thorough and explains why the technology he uses in his pools is the best and what stuff is a waste of money. Another big plus is his sense of design - John knows what will look good and what not to do. We started the project two weeks ago and the progress has been astounding. Crews show up when expected and work very hard. The hole has been dug, plumbing done, and the rebar installed. Next week is the gunite, gas & electrical. You don't just get a pool remodel from John, you get ART! People cannot stop raving about how beautiful our new pool remodel looks. John took a 60+ year old pool and took it down to the gunite and dirt and rebuilt it from the ground up. We converted from chlorine to a salt water pool - Wow!... what a difference - it is a joy to go swimming in. We also added a new spa into the side of the pool with a water fall and fountain (a must!), along with a new arbor, natural stone pool deck, retaining walls, pilasters, lighting, plumbing, electrical and pool equipment. As an engineer myself, I was able to appreciate the quality of work that was performed. The stone mason was like watching a jeweler at work. In fact, all the craftsman did a first class job. John managed all the contractors superbly as we never had an issue. John's design work is what sets him apart from everyone else. We must have had 10 different contractors come by and all they would say was, "what do you want?" John came by and said, "Oh this is what you should do here to match this property and this style of a house." He then listened carefully to our lifestyle and how we entertained and incorporated our ideas to create a 5 star pool. We had a schedule of completing the pool for our annual 4th of July party for 150+ people and he made the date, in spite of the obstacles we threw in his way with change orders and delays! He worked with us on every detail. The key is to always work through him for everything and you will be enjoying a spectacular pool, like we are. Funny story... when we were looking for a pool contractor and could not find one we liked, I went through Yelp and found John and called him. I said I am looking to do a pool remodel and his first comment was, "You cannot afford me." At first I was taken aback by the comment, but convinced him to come by. We have a pretty nice piece of property and the pool was going to be a centerpiece in the backyard - we wanted something special. After we finished the job and saw the necessity of everything he recommended and the 1st class quality of work, we realized that 'We couldn't afford NOT to have gone with John." John Rigo owner of Stonebridge Pools did a fantastic job on our pool. He was the original contractor 22 years ago. John worked for another company at that time. He listened to what we wanted in a design and came up with a pool design that people still say is beautiful. Over these 22 years, every time we had a question about the pool we would call John. He would take time to come over and answer our questions and give us suggestions even telling us we did not have to do anything for awhile. In September, when it was time for a "pool lift", we called John Rigo. We were going to go with the same cement bottom, but John, in his wisdom highly suggested pebble tec. We chose a beautiful color to go with our ocean blue tiles. The tiles are still in great shape and just needed cleaning. John had the tiles cleaned, installed the pebble tec, installed a new filter and added drains to bring the pool up to current code, and changed all the fixtures to black to complement the pool color. John even installed a water overflow drain that we wanted. The pool is beautiful; it sparkles. He was so right in his suggestion. He even suggested we plant more plants with our palm trees to make it look more tropical. It is almost time for a new pool heater and you can bet we will call John. He is very honest and easy to work with. We do not hesitate to tell you we feel John is great and the work he accomplishes is absolutely beautiful. He works his "magic". read more

We had Stonebridge Pools build a pool for us a couple of years back. We live on the Penninsula. Someone just called me that had a pool built more recently, which made me think I should provide a review, even though it's been awhile. Especially since it sounds like the person that called me is experiencing the exact same issues. Although I love the pool, I wouldn't use Stonebridge again. The good: John is an experienced pool builder, his team does quality work and has strong design capabilities The bad: John low balls his estimates and even at that, he will still be one of your most expensive starting bids. You may pick him because his designs will likely be better than others you see. He may charm you with his passion and experience. However, he will not provide enough detail in his bid, specifically so he can come back and change order you...and he will change order you! Engineering, pool interior finish, plumbing, tiling, etc....all will be adjusted up as you progress through your project because he will tell you he specified a lower quality than you actually want or expected. There will not be enough detail in his original bid to even provide enough basis for you to challenge his assumptions. This is his game. The change orders will come every time he meets with you as things that "weren't comtemplated" in the original bid arise, despite the fact that he says he's built hundred of pools, and should know exactly what is involved, down to the last detail. He will start demo before you even have permits. Don't let him do this. Once he's demolished your yard and fence, he has leverage over you. He will give you a quote on engineering costs that will be added to his original bid that will be much lower than what the actual amount will come in at.. He will get you to gunite and then start bringing up a bunch of additional charges that he's now incurred, that you haven't agree to previously, but now are owed or he won't move forward. You won't be able to disengage and get another bid because he's put in rough plumbing (with no schematics) that only his team can finish and no other contractor can possibly take over. I would give John 5 stars if I felt he could be trusted and actually be fair and trustworthy about his billing practices and change orders. I would be willing to pay more if he would provide a rational starting bid and just be honest about what it is going to take rather than pop constant surprises and change orders. He's not alone in the contractor world on this. But there are alot of good pool builders out there that build "award winning" pools..and you could probably find one that is a lot more transparent and fair about what it is really going to take. Last thing I will say is that with John, my final pool costs were approximately 50-60% higher than his original bid and none of that was due to any change in pool design--all due to 'things that weren't contemplated in his original bid'--again, despite his 30+ years in the pool business. If you want to pay for John Rigo's extravagant vision of what HE wants your pool and surroundings to be, Stonebridge Pools is your company. If you want to hear him ramble on for an hour about how everything has to be leveled, replaced and how none of your stuff is useful, John's your guy. After wasting an hour of our life to listen to this guy go on and on, he didn't even bother to send an estimate. We called him for it after 2 weeks, feeling like we were at least owed that for listening patiently, and he insisted on driving out to go over it. Guess what-no estimate! All he wanted to do again was drone on and on about HIS vision. After 10 excruciating minutes, I stopped him politely, told him we didn't think this was a good fit and that we weren't in need of his services. His parting remark was "I didn't want to do it anyways". Really?! I heard a 7 year old say that the other day. I don't bother writing 1 star yelp reviews unless someone is so galling, rude and/or so clearly likely to waste precious time. We were really ready to like this guy and pay well as he was a referral. Like I said, if you want to pay for John's vision of your pool without him understanding your needs, start leveling your background to dirt and get ready to pay for HIS pool. read more
