Unfortunately I had a very poor experience here and will not be back. For starters you have to enter a fabric shop and descend the stairs in the back of the shop to get to where they do the alterations. The place to change was simply a thin black fabric sheet that was nearly see through strung up next to the water heater/furnace. Needless to say this made me very weary of changing knowing there were many men in the shop just on the other side of the curtain. I had a bridesmaid dress that needed to be hemmed and brought it in without bothering to bring the high heels I intended to wear with it because I was experiencing some foot swelling and they wouldn't have fit my foot at the time to begin with. I immediately addressed this with the person marking the dress and told them my heels were about 4 inches high so to please add on an additional 3- 3 1/2 inches to the height indicated so the dress would still be floor length when I wear the heels. The communication between myself and the person marking the dress was extremely clear and there were even written notes indicating the extra length to be kept on the dress. I was surprised by the price for the hemming, but they justified the dress was 3 layers and I had to pay prior to them doing the work and they even asked for a tip upfront too! I left the shop confident everything would turn out as expected, as I assumed the high price would guarantee a job well done. Within a week the dress was ready for pickup and I check the seems before leaving, but do not bother trying on the dress as I trusted they did exactly as we had agreed upon. The seems did not look very nice to me, a touch sloppy and wasn't completely straight, but at the end of the day I knew no one else would be looking closely so I accepted the dress and left. I tried on the dress at home only to find out it was even shorter than where the markings were during the fitting! Even flat-footed without any shoes on, the dress did not touch the ground. It was a disaster once I put my intended high heels on and it was the equivalent of high-waters but with a dress. In a panic I text or email them and even provide photos. They say I could bring it back, but by that point I only had a few days before the wedding and even if they let out the seems, one inch of fabric was not enough when it was missing at least 3 inches! They did go so far as to offering to purchase me another dress and to redo the hemming which I do think was above and beyond in attempting to make it right, but the dress was a special order color and there was no way to get another one in time. I finally spoke to the bride who just didn't want to risk the dress getting more messed up and asked to keep it as-is and the final resolution I received from the business was just a vague offer to discount a future service, no offer to even partially refund me for the poor work that had already been paid for. I ended up having to wear some much lower shoes and just bend my legs a bit in the photos so my dress looked the same length as the other bridesmaids. Overall my experience here was poor and I wouldn't want to risk another special occasion garment coming out not as expected. With so many other shops offering alterations in the area for a similar or cheaper price point I would choose another place. read more

Went here a few months ago to get some suits tailored. Tailor job was good, but the service was some of the worst I've ever experienced and that alone is enough to make sure I never go back. When I dropped my things off, I was told it would be ready and given a range of days to pick it up. I went by the last day in the pickup range, and not everything was ready yet. I grabbed the stuff that was and asked when my last article would be ready. They again gave me a pickup date. I came by on the second pickup date and the suit was still not ready. I was never notified that the timeframe had changed or anything, they just let me show up and wasted my time twice in a row. read more

THE GOOD Conveniently located on 39th and 8th avenue, you won't see the business name anywhere, his studio it's on the lower level of a fabrics store. Although he does alterations, he also designs clothes, so if you want to have something custom-made he can do that as well. THE BAD Unless you call and arrange for Sandro to be there, there's someone on his staff who should not be working with clients period. This being my second visit to the shop I was taken aback by his demeanor, I actually asked him if he was mad or angry about something which he denied (and soften his expression). After being fitted by a lovely Italian grandpa, I was told I have to come back later (I had to go) for the quote. Hours later I did, the guy told me it has not to be done but for me to return tomorrow, to which I replied that was not reasonable given that I needed the suit by the weekend, so I picked the suit and left, at this point with no more options open for the day. If you are a busy individual, unless you meditate in the morning, a situation like this could get ugly. THE BEST Given the great experience, I had at The Stitch before but also running out of time, I was able to call Alessandro directly and after explaining the situation he took care of me. Boy he did! From the jacket to the pants, the suit is so perfectly fitted that if you overeat it is going to show so... don't go crazy when attending events with tons of food, candy, and desserts The fact that he was able to deliver the suit right on time and with a smile, is what warrants to continue to support this business. read more

No apology when I first called in, and the tailor says "this happens" when I come in for the second time. No, it shouldn't have happened in the first place. I found Alessandro thanks to other Yelpers and wanted to pay it forward as he is truly a gem in the fashion district - one who is good at his trade and yet doesn't rip you off ! He takes extra care and attention to details ... infact the first time I visited him and wasnt even sure of which dress I would alter as I had two options - he actually took pictures even though I hadn't even confirmed doing the job with him. Then of course was the time when I actually decided on the dress and the dress was just not working for me - he and Maria went out of their way to show me ways to create ruffles around the tummy area ( which was the sore spot) and make the dress work .. long story short .. I finally decided to go with a whole different dress at the end and he did a fabulous job of altering it to the T !! Alessandro was fun to work with on my wedding dress alterations, which as you might imagine is a bit of a stressful task for a bride! I was so grateful that he worked with my budget, and he and his staff did an AMAZING job fixing the loose netting on the chest area of my dress. It basically required them to take apart the whole dress and then put it back together again to fix. Like with all alterations shops as far as I could tell, you do need to try on the clothes in the shop in order to receive a price estimate, which can be a bit awkward as someone who has never gotten alterations done before and had no idea what price to expect. But Alessandro made the experience as pleasant as possible. As a woman, I would just mention that the dressing room experience could be improved as it is just a makeshift curtain area in the corner and I did feel a little exposed. I went to About the Stitch to alter two of my suits. Alessandro was very nice and attentive. But after about a week, the first suit came back much baggier than I had described, and the second suit wasn't altered at all! They "forgot". I waited another week. The first suit came back perfect, and the second suit was, although altered, not nearly as I had described. I left both suits for Alessandro, and said I want the second suit exactly like the first suit. A week later, I tried it on; still not the same. The second suit was still much baggier, and much longer than the first. I waited another week. The tailor overcompensated and now, the second suit is too tight. Too exhausted to continue, I kept the tight suit and left. The total cost was $430 dollars. UPDATE: I went back and Alessandro fixed the suit. It's a perfect fit and I'm happy with it. read more

Flawless work. I had a dress altered, and it looks as though it was originally made this way. Al and the team are really nice. However, this was my first time getting something altered/tailored and I felt the experience could have been better. They ask you to try on your item first. After you do and tell them what you'd like, they give you a quote. I would have preferred getting the quote first. After all the time and energy to change in and out of my clothes (the dress was fairly complicated), I felt I was already in too deep and committed. The price felt high to me and there was no up-front breakdown or consultation on alternatives, so I felt stuck and uneasy. The end result was lovely but I'll probably shop around more for future tailoring needs. Can't say enough good things about the team at About the Stitch! I had two dresses to be altered here for some summer events coming up, and they really made me feel comfortable and gave suggestions for the best alterations without being too pushy. I'm not one to frequent tailors, but I was able to communicate with Alessandro without any trouble. Eventually I came back for additional tapering on one dress, and they helped me break down the changes necessary for the fit I wanted. I'm really happy about the results.
