Overpriced and not too many options on the menu. I felt like this place was fake fancy because it's in the museum. My water had black floaties in it so it makes me question its cleanliness. Staff was friendly but food was not impressive. I opted for the harvest salad with added chicken and it was very bland and very small: my friend and I were still hungry afterwards. My husband had the smash burger and he said it was good, but not what was expected for the price. Our table also had the oxtail and the quid ink pasta and it was not very flavorful. I don't think we'll be eating here again. Two bottles of wine and 4 small meals ended up being $280! read more

I ordered the flavorful pork belly with heirloom beans as my entree. The dish was a work of art, both visually and in the interplay of flavor and texture. The only problem was it came with only about two tablespoons of the delicious beans. Next time I order this dish, I will order an extra half-cup of beans in the tasty sauce. Also, I asked for the kimchi puree on the side, and I thout was better without the puree. My husband got the quiche with salad. I always enjoy the table service at the restaurant inside the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I've been going there since I was a kid, so I've seen it go through it's various styles. The new configuration is beautiful! I found the menu to be a bit limited, which is not a bad thing, but I would have liked to have a few more options. That's why I only give four - not five - stars. The service was friendly, and the timing of the service was great and relaxing. The food was excellent, starting with the artisan rolls, to the grilled shrimp in my fresh crisp salad, to the grass fed burgers and hand cut fries. The iced tea was freshly brewed and bottomless. Prices are certainly within reason for a quality meal in the City. My guests thoroughly enjoyed their luncheon at Stir. I will definitely return. read more

Two of us this afternoon for lunch. Seated promptly. Before you proceed, I suggest skipping this place. First out was a bread course of two very stale, oily pieces of focaccia. For entree, partner got the pork belly, which was tasty. However, a small, skimpy mound of greens and some radish was the only accompaniment. Not acceptable. I had the 'chop salad' with $8 add-on of a SAD, TINY, DRIED-OUT chicken breast. Totally unacceptable. Definitely precooked maybe the day before and warmed up today. I had to eat, because the wait was too long for who-knows-what reason. I'm told the restaurant at the Barnes Museum is superior, but maybe just eat at home first before museuming, or check out any number of restaurants in Center City. Not coming back. read more

Stir is located in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and it's a cozy restaurant with great meals at a price that's still affordable. I think lots of people skip the fine dining lunch experience because they think it's too pricey or they forget to make a reservation. It's so worth it compared to the cafe. The food is excellent and the service is great. I was excited about going to Stir. I was looking forward to the ambiance, menu, and getting to eat with my company. Our server was attentive and kind. The person who brought us our food a couple of times must have been a new bus girl perhaps because she just put the food on the table instead of telling us what it was and asking who's it was. That's not really a big deal. Unfortunately, the food was not necessarily presented on the plate well. Everyone was excited for the beet and grapefruit salad but it's presentation was a fail. The beets and grapefruit were put on the plate first and the greens were on top so you couldn't even see them and had to go hunting. The quiche was very bland. The carrot cake was just okay. I ordered the oxtail and squid ink pasta. It was fairly tasty. My mother ordered the same dish and clearly received an appropriate sized portion while mine was minimal. I did not complain. The salt for the table was a community salt bowl. It came with a lid and a little spoon, but I am assuming plenty of fingers accidentally end up in the bowl. The bread and butter you have to pay for. I had lunch with a friend prior to seeing the Jasper Johns exhibit. I ordered a salad and added Salmon. The dish came and I looked at the Salmon it appeared to be over cooked, no pink. I trued it and it tasted odd. I thought maybe it was spiced ? I ate some more. It tasted off but I stupidly ate more. . With in an hour I was dizzy and had to sit down. I regained my bearings and went to the Amtrak for my trip back to NYC. On my way I became violently sick. Once home I was sick for a week with food poisoning. I have never felt sicker. We were at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and due to a late breakfast, didn't look for lunch until 2pm. Since it was my son's birthday, we skipped the cafe and treated ourselves to lunch at Stir. They brought out lovely warm, soft, salted rolls with fresh butter right away. I had a nice Pinot Grigio, he had a mock Moscow Mule. I ordered their sweet potato gnocchi with a sage butter sauce and wilted kale; he ordered the dry aged burger topped with onion jam that came with fries on the side. Both were excellent! The fries were crispy and hot with crunchy salt and came with a tarragon garlic aioli dip, delicious. For dessert we shared a pawpaw pudding - coconut-based, lightly sweet custard with a tart pawpaw drizzle and sweet crunchy honeycomb cookie (like UK Hokey Pokey) bits on top. Wow! One of the best parts of the experience was our server Alexis. She was knowledgeable about the entire menu and so sweet. When she found out we would be visiting the Italian Market, she suggested a few places to stop at. Just the absolute best. Oh! Started to feel a little peckish during our visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and we noticed that our entrance tickets entitled us to 10% off Stir during lunchtime. I don't usually have high hopes for dining establishments at tourist attractions, since they tend to be rather underwhelming given their captive audience, but we figured we'd give this a shot. First impressions and atmosphere: We were greeted warmly by the hostess and led to our table immediately. We were struck by how bustling it was - the restaurant was fairly small, and nearly all the tables were occupied. The ambience was lovely, with wood panelling, ample space between tables, plush seating, and smartly-dressed waitstaff. The stoneware and glassware used were beautiful and very unique, as one would reasonably expect given the restaurant's location in an art museum. Food: We ordered a Stir Chopped salad at $10 (mixed baby lettuce, heirloom carrot, celery, radish, sunflower seed, dried currant, crispy quinoa, champagne vinaigrette) and opted to add salmon for $9. While waiting for the salad to arrive, our waiter brought bread rolls and butter to our table. The rolls were cradled in a little fabric sack and the butter was generously sprinkled with coarse sea salt. We were happy to note that the rolls were warm and soft to the bite (I'm sure we've all had our fair share of disappointingly hard and stale bread when dining out). Shortly after, our waiter brought our salad over, which the kitchen had thoughtfully apportioned out into two plates. The salad was competently assembled and the vegetables were very fresh. However, we felt that there could have been more than what seemed like a light sprinkle of quinoa (there must have been all of a tablespoonful of quinoa in the dish). The salmon was on the slightly dry side and we felt that the kitchen could have been more generous with the portion as well (the portion on each plate couldn't have weighed more than 2 ounces after being cooked). At the end of the meal, our waiter brought over two pignoli cookies, which came as a surprise as we had turned down dessert. The cookies were studded with toasted pine nuts and were deliciously chewy while not being too sweet - a great way to end the meal! Overall: A lovely little restaurant nestled in the underbelly of the sprawling Philadelphia Museum of Art, with a tasteful interior and pleasant waitstaff. The complimentary bread and cookies were delicious and much appreciated, but the kitchen could probably fine-tune portion sizes and cooking techniques a little more. All in all, definitely one of the better dining establishments in a popular attraction! read more

Let's start with the cons of which there are many: Cons: food here was generally fine. Just fine. We went for Mother's Day. Our service was bad. They served us burnt buttermilk pancakes for one of our kids and when we asked them to remake them, they took our dish back, examined the pancakes and then the waitress returned to tell me that only one of the pancakes actually looked burned and the others were fine so they agreed to remake one pancake and return the one pancake they felt was not burnt. In order to not make a scene at the table I agreed, but in all of my life I've never heard a restaurant suggest doing something like this after the staff examined the contents of the plate to make their own independent determination. The original plate was brought back with the original strawberry sauce all over the plate, the original butter cup on the plate, one pancake that was removed due to the staff deeming it was sufficiently burned to be considered burnt, one original broken pancake that the staff felt was not sufficiently burned to be deemed burnt and one new fresh pancake on top of the entire dish. I'm not even sure this is a hygienic food serving practice. We will never return. Pros: it is In the art museum and has a nice ambiance. Recommendation: don't eat here. read more

The first time I was here was soon after it opened. Went for brunch on a Sunday with friends. Reviews had been very mixed. That was our experience. Not crowded but good food and poor service. Returned for second time today and am pleased to say had a delightful lunch on a busy day. I was impressed by the number of staff on the floor. Two teenagers had burgers which they said were delicious. I had chilled gazpacho with just a slight tang and a seasonal dish made with (?) poached red apricots and a soft cheese. Both were delicious. But it also looks like they only have 1-2 people waiting on tables. The food is pretty average as far as brunch places in philly go. The cocktails are pretty good. However this place is also super hard to find. It's in the art museum but you have to come in the back entrance of the art museum to get to it. They won't let you come through the front. We shared 2 small plates and a salad and could not even finish everything. This restaurant was amazing. For me, someone with a million food allergies, I have been turned away by many restaurants. When I walked in, they were incredibly helpful and nice and when I told them my many allergies, they were sympathetic and made it so I could eat there. Mark, the chef who came out and talked to me about the food, and how what I was ordering would be altered so I could eat it. I came in here for lunch when I was visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art last week. This place is ultramodern and the food is excellent! I got kale salad ($12.00), roasted cod ($24.00), vanilla cider panna cotta ($8.00), and a glass of pio pinot grigio ($9.00). The kale salad was very fresh and had generous servings. The roasted cod was similar to the recipe I found here (https://www.finecooking.com/recipe/sear-roasted-haddock-or-cod-with-horseradish-aioli-lemon-zest-breadcrumbs); it was cooked all the way through and charred on the surface without being overly cooked. It was juicy and very tasty. This was some excellent cod--outstanding. Another masterpiece has been added to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, this one being a restaurant named Stir. The space itself is a square room with a number of marble-topped tables, several booths, and an arrangement of light colored timbers hanging from the ceiling in the center courtesy of architect Frank Gehry. While the surroundings are pleasing to the eye, the food here is the star of the show. We went there for a delicious lunch (the don't serve dinner here but they do have brunch on Sundays) recently and enjoyed our meal from start to finish. For starters, we had the parsnip and pear soup which my wife was really not a fan of but I liked a lot. We both were big fans of the Chesapeake crab cake, which was almost entirely crabmeat, and may just be the best crab cake in town. For entrees we split the Barnegat scallops and a new addition to the menu, which was perfectly cooked venison served with grits and some greens. Both were fantastic. For dessert I had the chocolate marquise served with house made hazelnut gelato which was delicious. While the portions of everything are not overwhelming, everything was perfectly prepared and very tasty. Our server was very attentive and helpful, and we were given two orange zest pignioli cookies in a bag at the end of our meal to take home which were stunning, as with each bite, the cookies changed from almonds marzipan to pine nuts and then to orange zest at the end. Like the works of art hanging on the floors above the restaurant, Stir shows that food itself can be an art form as well. read more
