Dined from 7:30-8:30 on a Monday night. Plenty of available tables. Atmosphere was cozy and warm, music was tastefully low. "Contemporary American" was the vibe, lights were low, lots of wood/black pipe. Staff was exceptionally attentive, including our server (terribly remiss to have forgotten her name, but she was absolutely perfect and we enjoyed sharing some conversation with her as well). Proper Smashburger (8/10). I got mine with the caramelized onions (how can one not?) and it was perfect. Great bun-to-meat ratio, bun was not overly starchy or dry. Lettuce was fresh, onions were bangin, and the garlic aioli tied it all together. Sweet vinegar pickles were a nice touch. Togarashu Fries (8/10). Fresh cut skinny fries topped with a spicy seasoning that sneaks up on you. Served w/ a yuzu miso mayo for dipping that gave it just enough tang and paired well w/ the spicy. Truffle Fries (10/10). Fresh cut skinny fries topped w/ fresh grated and some diced chives. Served w/ a garlic (?) aioli that was top notch. Absolutely fantastic side. read more

While visiting Stillwater, we stopped here for lunch. Upon entering I observed that it looked really clean for a bar. We were also greeted by numerous employees. All were friendly and professional. Inside they had numerous tables and a couple of booths. The bar portion also seemed to be a good size. They had a few televisions throughout. They also have a touch tunes music player. The service was fast and accurate! The menu is a la carte. My sister, daughter and I all had burgers and fries while my wife ordered chicken wings. The burgers are made to order. On mine I had added bacon, cheese and an egg. It was delicious. The fries were also good. My sister and my daughter also liked their food. My wife really enjoyed her chicken wings. She told me that they were good and spicy. She also said, "it has been a while since I have had good wings." If you are in Stillwater Minnesota or visiting, I highly recommend stopping here! read more

Very good food, and a cool atmosphere. Service was also very good. We sat up at the bar and had the Bluefin tuna, pork belly rice bowl, and the Parmesan truffle fries. And for desert we had the Beignet croissant. And margaritas. read more

Stillwater Proper was really good! We stopped on a Friday afternoon for lunch and were seated right away. Our waiter was amazing! Super knowledgeable of the menu and drink list. I chose the walleye entree, my daughter had a burger, fries and Brussel sprouts. I wasn't that thrilled with the walleye but everything else was good. The restaurant itself was very clean and it was easy to find parking nearby. If it the area, I would definitely come by again. read more

Make a stop here! We had a last minute birthday dinner reservation fall through and Stillwater Proper took care of our large group last minute! Not only did they squeeze our group in, but they provided quality service as well! As I'm a GF girly, the fact that they A. Have GF options and B. Our server went through all the options with me was outstanding! The location is amazing, and the ambiance is top notch! Don't sleep on the fries, burrata, bowls or the burger! Will for sure be back! These fries! These drinks! And the food! read more

Very impressed with this lovely restaurant right in downtown Stillwater. This restaurant is also related to Lolo and Lolito. They also have a lovely little bar in the back room...it's intimate and great to hop in when it's open. We sat at a table close to the front door on a cold Sunday night. This place has a great happy hour which is every day from 3-5pm and Sunday from 3 - close. I got their delish old fashioned at the happy hour pricing. Yum and Yay! I ordered the Mediterranean bowl with falafel. It was absolutely perfect and the flavors were out of this world. Lots of other wonderful and tasty meals on the menu. Service was great and I can't wait to go back and try other items. Or maybe I'll stick with my fav so far. Lol. read more

Stopped in for lunch and sat myself at an open barstool. I was greeted quickly and provided water and menus. Decided to try the Avo-BLT and the Quiet Riot (a delicious ginger beer mocktail) -- and they were prepared quickly, looked great and tasted delicious. Upon completion I was presented with my check and a takeout box in a timely manner and thanked for my business. These are all basic things-- but that matters to me. Provide good customer service, tasty food and do it all for a reasonable price --- 5 stars! read more

We went there for our anniversary dinner on a Wednesday evening. Wanted to order the Steak Frites, but they were out (apparently reworking portions of the menu). That worked out well as I tried something else, more on that later. We started with a couple of Old Fashion's. They have an awesome looking craft cocktail selection, but we wanted to evaluate a traditional cocktail, which did not disappoint. We split the Tempura Fried Shrimp appetizer, perfect, great with the red chile mayo and the pickled veggies! For the main dish, my wife ordered the Togarashi Bluefin Tuna Bowl and I ordered the Fried Garlic Noodles with Chicken, and of course we shared bites with one another. Both were excellent and highly recommended, the Tuna was sushi grade and melt in your mouth good. The Fried Garlic noodles were excellent and a pleasant surprise. Udon noodles with excellent seasoning and the chicken was thigh meat perfectly cooked and very flavorful. For dessert we shared Lizzie's Fudge Brownie, save room for dessert as this is served with Caramel Gelato. The service and wait staff were good as would be expected. read more

We kind of backed into this place... and we thought it was great. The cocktails were fun (and spicy!). The fried noodle felt very fresh. The fries were crispy and we enjoyed the cheese on top! The fish was moist, but the battered exterior was crunchy. We'd for sure come back! read more

This is a cute eatery to meet friends. The place is cozy. Most of the 2 top tables are high tops with perfect mood lighting for the table. They have an open kitchen within the bar area. The staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We loved the local fare. The fish and chips breading was perfectly crispy. The portion to price was a bit skewed, one piece of walleye. Pickles with the fish were amazing. I'd recommend this place for cocktails and a date night. read more

Wonderful gnocchi pasta and Salmon bowl here! Very friendly and efficient service. Bar type atmosphere.

This is a very nice little restaurant in the heart of Stillwater. The service was very friendly and attentive. I tried both the Garlic Noodles and the Triple Grilled Cheese. I felt the grilled cheese could have had a better ratio of cheese to pesto, but it was still tasty. The garlic noodled were also good but a bit too rich by the end. The drinks were tasty and strong- great bang for your buck! Would return here read more

Really awesome. I came in, went to the bar, got served immediately. Staff was efficient, friendly. Food was great. Only thing is that the banh mi wasnt exactly what i was expecting. It was basically a hot dog with banh mi toppings. The menu said duck bacon and it was definitely not that. The chips and breakfast stout were great though. read more

A gem in downtown Stillwater. Crazy good, unique menu. Try the carrot appetizer if they have it. Trust me. The lightly breaded, crispy togarashi wings were just right. Have had good experiences in the past with this place, but let down on this birthday celebration. Our waitress was very odd...made uncomfortable comments, specifically about being a part of the "clean plate club", which I find a bit inappropriate as a service worker, and barely checked in with us. The food took a long time to come out (people who ordered after us got theirs before.) Grilled Chicken Salad- yummy, but did not include bacon as listed on the menu Proper Burger- good flavor, but definitely recommend getting a double because the ratio of bread to meat isn't great Spicy Grilled Chicken Sandwich- again, good flavor but small portion read more

This place was vibing! We stopped in for Sunday brunch and it did not disappoint! I had the Korean Fried Eggs - crispy over easy eggs on a bed of jasmine rice, with chili oil flakes and pickled veggies - it was so delicious! I've gone twice in the past month or so and really enjoyed both times. First time I got the proper burger and fries. So tasty and we also started with the burrata which we loved! Also had great drinks, but can't remember the names. Second time was a few days ago with out of state friends and we all loved our food. We started with delicious drinks and the Brussels sprouts, omg tasty! I got the noodles and added chicken. Holy flavor! My friends got a tuna bowl and a burger and they both loved them. I appreciated the honesty of the server with maybe not letting us order something she thought wasn't as good as most other things on the menu (walleye). I love that they take reservations as a lot of places done. First time we had one, second time we didn't and we were still able to sit right away at 6:45ish on a Saturday night. read more

Without question, the best restaurant experience I had in downtown Stillwater, and my mouth is still watering from the experience! I just absolutely love this place, let's just start with the ambience, which is fantastic! A nice bar, right in the middle very lively, TV screens, get this they have their own distillery in the back?! I mean, I have not seen that before! You will just be so happy you stopped in here to eat. Trust me! Time to talk about the food, the best meal I've had in months! And certainly in Stillwater!! Everything here was probably about as good as things could taste let's just talk about some of the appetizers like the brussels sprouts and the carrots! Make sure you order both of those you won't regret it! My grilled chicken sandwich was the best grilled chicken sandwich I can remember having. So here's another thing, without a doubt, the best dessert I think I even can remember at a restaurant! They have several brownies here and they put ice cream on it. The chocolate, peanut butter, brownie dessert I had was as close to heaven as you can get! This is the spot to go for dinner in downtown Stillwater in my opinion! Highly recommended for a meal you won't forget! read more

My wife and I tried Stillwater Proper this past weekend. Great vibe overall - busy but a really nice setup with the bar in the middle and tables all around. We sat at the bar in front of the open kitchen (which was fun to watch actually). We tried a couple of the special cocktails (see pictures). Vey strong first sip but overall two really good drinks. We were thinking we were there just for a cocktail but ended up getting some fries as a snack - they were amazing - thin cut and cooked perfectly. Not exactly health food ... but so good. The service was a little slow, but it was pretty packed on a Saturday afternoon in December. We will be back. read more

After some axe throwing at a nearby establishment our big family group stopped here for dinner (yes we had a reservation for our group of twelve). The restaurant was hopping and the waitress did a good job with the big group. The kitchen though was a bit slow but not a surprise given the size of our group. The menu was somewhat small with lots of sandwiches including burgers and hot dogs and a few entrees. Everyone liked their meal. Two of us ordered the shrimp tempura tacos and they were very tasty with just the right amount of spice. Overall a good experience. read more

When the table is silent and everyone is apart of the clean plate club I think it's safe to give a 5 star review. We all enjoyed our meals - the grilled cheese, definitely not your basic grilled cheese flavorful crispy and delicious. The bbq chicken sandwich was super filling and perfectly battered for crunch in each bite. We also enjoyed the wedge salad and the steak frites meal, the meat was tender and fries were seasoned well with a nice golden crisp. Oh and the mocktails - delicious! read more

Went to grab a quick snack while waiting to meet up with some folks. I'll say it looks like a really busy place around meal times but I think that's mainly because of convenience. The prices are pretty high based on the dishes we saw/got. The portions were very small and the flavor was underwhelming. The best part about the place is the 45th Parallel Distillery tasting room in the back! I don't think I'll be back given the other options in the area. read more

It has been 2 weeks since my sisters, the SOs and myself were all in the same city! This happens once every few years. For a "Sibling's night out," (without in-laws, babies, or toddlers) my oldest sister made reservations for Stillwater Proper. Sustainable, local and that includes the liquor, wine and beer, right on!!! Arrived and were seated promptly, then given water and introduced to the server. He was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly! I ordered the "One Time at Band Camp" drink (I had to explain the cultural significance to one of my younger sisters, which was...special...), others got beer brewed from local breweries, and the non-alcohol drinking folks amongst us could choose, yes, from the traditional pop products, mocktails, tea and whatnot. The party total was about 8 (I believe?) and here are the nitty gritty facts: 1.) Brussels- well balanced, tasty, flavorful and overcooked 2.) Hot dogs (Banh mi and Japanese) = DELISH!! 3.) Tempura fried shrimp was said to be good, although the batter was heavy 4.) Two people got the Proper Burger, and were happy with the doneness requested and flavor. 5.) We got both types of fries in abundance and were full of 'taters, precious. 6.) One of my browski in laws got the grilled cheese, and all I can say is that I saw the server place down the dish, and the next time I looked, it was gone! 7.) Here is the downer: 3 of us got the steak frites. The requested doneness was SPOT. OH! KUDDOS! However, it was SOOOOOOOOO salty. All three of us agreed, and that includes 2 foodie connoisseur and then my younger sister who thinks Ranch Dressing goes with everything and actually went to McDonalds and ordered a "Fish Fillet, hold the fish." Very disappointing. Fries were great, greens as a salad that accompanied the steak were fresh, crisp and the dressing complimented the dish to lend sweetness to the dish. Here is why it got 3 stars: the timing. The servers were fantastic, the timing BLEW!!! We arrived and part of our party was 10 minutes late, true. We ordered drinks and appetizers. Everything great so far! The drinks and apps came out quickly, within 5-10 minutes. And then, a few minutes after being served the apps, we were asked to put in our entrée orders, because the kitchen wanted to have time to time the main entrees and were in a rush. Okay. We gave our orders... 40 minutes later, a full hour and 15 minutes after the time of our reservation, the entrees arrived. Legit, the reservations were for 7:30PM, and we got our entrees around 8:45PM, and the place closes at 9PM! One of my sisters who has twin 6 month old's considered and asking for the plated dinner to be transferred to to go boxes! It was frustrating to be asked to rush our entrée orders and then wait an our after appetizers to receive our main dishes. Look, I know that this is a newer place, and with COVID-19, it would not hurt to give some grace. I will try the place again and see if the service/kitchen timing was a fluke or if it is an issue with management. Either way, all of us siblings had a blast and that at the end of the day is what matters! read more

Such a cool Spot in Stillwater! We stopped in during their fall festival and got to enjoy some hot apple cider along with a drink and some food. The place has great decor and the staff is super friendly. A distillery style affair with a menu of different sorts. The menu has a variety of items from Asian to American flair. This place was really great. Very upscale, modern, great food selection. Great cocktails. Great service. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it's pretty pricey. Well, well, well - it appears I've found a new favorite trio in restaurants. On inquiring about a particular drink (Lt Dan) to see if it was sweet, I was adv that you won't find those syrupy-sweet drinks here. These guys do cocktails right! You may even note proper ice was used. Hey, it matters! Fresh food, served hot. We started with the caramelized onion dip - no regrets. I appreciate that the la bronson burger wasn't over cooked, even as a non-burger gal, I was happy with it! The integration of mushrooms through a variety of dishes is fantastic. The brussel sprouts are divine... pine nuts yum! Service was great too & I love the teamwork! As mentioned elsewhere, gratuity of 20% is automatically added & clearly marked. read more

Awesome cocktails! Very casual menu (a ton of burgers) - we got two rice bowls and they were both excellent! More casual but great eats!

Unfortunately a disappointment and pricey lunch considering lackluster food. Brussel sprouts were deep fried for way too long, it was practically charred so tasted burnt throughout. The pesto that accompanied the burrata is very, very salty. FYI burgers do not come with sides so it's just the burger. The hot fried chicken sandwich was the real downer here - it's not a fillet, it's 3 chicken tenders instead. But again, similar to the Brussel sprouts, it was overly fried and really tough to eat. Simply not worth $13 for tough chicken tenders. I know this place is highly ranked so pretty disappointed with this lunch experience. read more
