Just visiting family and dear to enjoy a steak dinner at Steve's with our group. Place is always packed but the accommodated us in a half hour. Their filet mignon broiled to medium rare is my preferred cooking style and the sautéed onions accompanied each bite. Fries soaked in maggi sauce supported the steak as did an extra helping of mushrooms. Too full for my own dessert I ran my fork into everyone else's. Old school Jersey staple, serving up steaks for nearly 90 years. Very vintage atmosphere, complete with wood paneled walls, adorned with fish, animal heads, old photos, etc. Extremely casual and family friendly. You could wear a suit, you could wear jeans. It's summer time, so most of us were in simple shorts and t-shirts. Clearly not on the level of your higher end steakhouses, but right in that sweet spot below the upper echelon, but a step above some of the low-end cheap joints, chains and the like. A strong argument can be made that their price point is a touch higher than it should be at their quality level, but it seems that's the world we're living in today when it comes to restaurant pricing. They do a unique style which includes their signature sauce--and yes, it's definitely on the saltier side. You don't have to have it that way, and you can opt out, if you're salt-averse. They include mushrooms and a piling of perfectly cooked fries with every steak. They also include an entry level iceberg salad with a few tomatoes/cucumbers and a vast variety of dressings. The steaks themselves were all just slightly overcooked. Medium rare, closer to medium; Medium closer to medium well, etc. Not off enough to send them back, but noticeable. Dinner for 4 was under $200, and that was 1 beer, 2 6 oz. filets, a porterhouse and a smaller ribeye with a French onion soup "upgrade" over the included salad. Our server was friendly, efficient and on-point. He was knowledgeable for our celiac diner in getting her a completely gluten-free option. This place is not going to be in our regular rotation due to the fact that it's a bit distant from us, and we don't do steakhouses often. As a long time new jerseyian who has driven past route 17, I've been always curious about Steve's. Known for their sizzling steaks this restaurant is known to be an iconic institution in northern nj that have been open for 86 years. I finally ventured into Steves and ordered their iconic sizzling steak a 22oz cowboy ribeye and ordered it medium rare. Sure enough it came out sizzling served with some of their jus on top and a handful of steak fries. The steak was definitely more on the rare side but I think there is no great way to cook the steak to temp given maybe they just broil them on a hot plate. Steak was good quality -- but extremely fatty, even fattier than you would expect with a classic ribeye cut. The "jus" that the steak is served with is extremely salty -- if you don't tolerate salt well, ask for no sauce or sauce on the side. Fries were delicious, can you really go wrong with hot crispy steak fries? Sizzling steaks are also served with a side garden salad. Service was really nice and knowledgeable-- seemed like people who have worked their a long time. Inside ambience is really similar to an older dive bar, lots of animal heads, signs on the walls, fishes, and vintage pictures. Ambience and dining experience does not reflect the price of the menu items -- steak was around $55 and our one app was close to $15. Our party spent close to $250 for a sizzling steak at a dive bar -- glad I finally tried it but won't be returning. Would return if steak prices were closer to $25-30 dollars. read more

The fries and mushrooms that came with the steak were good as well. For dessert, I ordered a key lime pie, which was good and a pretty sizable portion. I will say my drink was a bit expensive, getting a Jameson on the rocks is usually not a killer to the wallet (I paid what I would normally pay for a 15 year Macallan). I LOVE places like "The Triple S"! Family owned for it's 86 years in the business. Opened in an era when people didn't come close to dining out as much as we do now. The atmosphere is like an old hunting lodge ( 2 bars with 3 dining rooms) filled with mounted trophy game, tin signs, kitschy items, and signed sports memorabilia. Great for family dining of all ages. Plenty of TVs to catch a game. THE MENU..........since it's really about the food...... Small menu. Mostly steaks and a few burgers. A pork chop. fish n chips. Salads. French onion soup. A few sides: mushrooms, onion rings, french fries, creamed spinach....That's about it. ( No bake or mash potatoes) IMO the small menu has been perfected. The steaks are great! They have a preparation called "Sizzlin" where the main ingredient has a Maggi Seasoning taste. It's been around for over 100 years old. Its a little salty, but has an immense, distinctive flavor that has a large following. ( Menu states they can prepare it "non-Sizzlin" but you have to try it.) They do make current, fun cocktails like a mango margarita or espresso martini or you can just have a beer. The prices are excellent compared to any other steak house. It may not be the greatest steak in NJ, but it's damn good at a great price, and laid back. I think everyone should go to Steve's to see a part of Bergen County restaurant history. I said, where can I get the best stake? If you want the best steak in the area it's Steve sizzling steak on route 17 about 5 miles from here. First trip down I wasn't disappointed. I still have fond memories of sitting at that bar. Ambience if you look up the word ambience is defined by Steves Sizzling Stake. Now granted, this all started before the Internet was the thing. And I have dropped in a time or two since I left the area. Close for me as anything less than two hours and I'll be there. Maybe three hours I'm not sure how long it's going to take the day for us to go from Liberty Landing to Steve sizzling Stake. My go to order? I still remember it like it was yesterday. Peters recipe for the perfect meal at Steve's. 1. Bring a friend or two for the experience should be shared. 2. Pull up to the bar. 3. Order your favorite beer for the occasion. My choice: Heineken 4. Don't look at the menu, Act like you're regular. The staff will spoil you either way. 5. Order the filet mignon, med rare. 6. It comes with stake fries, 7. Order the sautéed mushrooms. 8. Now a side of sautéed onions. 9. They will include a salad.* 10. Sit back and enjoy your beverage. 11. Enjoy the ambiance wait for your meal. Last point, when the meal is served. You will notice you can build a shish kebab on your fork for the perfect bite. Yum Yum. What you don't realize as I write this and I'm not there as it was several years ago. It's very hard to write this out and not be there. I just checked the map. It's a bit optimistic but it's only a half hour to 45 minutes from liberty Landing. Who knows maybe I'll be able to sneak two trips in;-) Can't wait. read more

I feel that a 3 is pretty generous - I'm trying to take into account that the food was okay. First of all, this place is super casual. People were wearing gym shorts. It's covered in old memorabilia and there's multiple tvs playing sports games. So not really a steakhouse. Came on a Sunday night and was told there was a 40 min wait (they don't do reservations or call ahead seating. They literally write your name on a yellow note pad and that's it). Got seated after 20-30 min. Zucchini fries were good. Served with horseradish sauce. Deep fried. Salad that comes with steaks is tiny. Some of the lettuce pieces were past their prime. Just tomato and cucumber on top. The only potato option is fries. No baked or mashed potato. Which are traditional for steakhouses. Everyone's meals came out relatively close together. My steak came out grayish and the inside was way over cooked. I ordered medium rare and got more medium well. Had to wait a while for the waitress but she took it back no issue. Took a little bit for another steak. The new one was much better. Good sear and cooked perfectly. The meat itself tasted good outside of the sauce. Now for the sauce - it's soy sauce with maybe butter in it or msg. There's nothing homemade about this. The menu is also misleading where you can order extra homemade steak sauce for an up charge but they don't specify it's the same stuff as on your steak. It's insanely salty. The soy profile also doesn't fit for a steakhouse. The fries are super thick and bland. They're very basic. They absorb the sauce because they're served on top of the steak and get mushy. The service was what was disappointing. We asked for a table for 5. We got a table for 4 with a folding chair at the end, not even a real chair. They also forgot silverware for him that we had to ask for. When they brought out the appetizer they said were one plate short. They knew we had 5 people but kept missing stuff. There are basic dessert options - all a variation of a pie. The hot chocolate is a crime to charge $8.50 for. It's very clearly made with water and canned whipped cream. The alcoholic spiked options are $10. This place is very expensive for not a real steakhouse. We had a long drive home and both myself and my husband felt really nauseous from all the salt. I wanted steak, I got steak. A yummy, juicy steak at that. Underneath those loaded perfectly cooked steak fries was a scrumptious 18oz Certified Angus Prime Ribeye. (Probably THE worst foodie pic I've ever taken. ‍). But trust me when I say it was there and delicious. Loved, loved loved the service. From the minute I walked in the staff was welcoming, attentive and not overbearing. The ambiance was dark/dim, a comfortable place to dine. Clearly it's a favorite place for many. Parking lot was packed, but got lucky and found a spot during off peak dinner hour. Did not have to wait to be seated. Long live Steve's! This old-school NJ steakhouse has been serving consistently delicious meals for decades and I am happy to report they still are. Hadn't been there in years and took a chance one recent rainy Saturday night. Place was packed (and at least four birthdays!) with a 20+ minute wait for a table, so we opted for two seats at the end of the bar and couldn't have been happier. The bartender was perfect - professional, friendly, attentive and gave a generous pour. The shrimp cocktail featured nice sized shrimp with just the right amount of horseradish in the cocktail sauce. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection and the fries and mushrooms, delish. Makes me happy just walking in and smelling the salty sauce sizzling.
