My wife and I went to Steve's Cafe on a Saturday about 10 a.m. I ordered a Philly style sandwich and my wife ordered a breakfast skillet. We waited an extremely long time to be seated even though there were clearly tables available. As soon as my wifestarted to eat, she became nauseous, and we immediately had to leave. The staff didn't acknowledge the food made her I'll or even offer her something else. My sandwich was bland, and nothing was spectacular. Steve's has a nice variety breakfast menu for your whole family. This was my first time ever trying huckleberry and it surely will not be my last. The pancakes were good but I could drink the huckleberry syrup. The Garden Omelette was kind of meh, I added chicken sausage which was good but the avocado wasn't fresh and the eggs were a bit dry. Food and service was awesome. Coffee taste amazing and the ice tea is fresh brewed, perfect. The only caveat to the whole thing is it's crazy expensive. One BLT sandwich with no french fries or anything is a whopping $10. By the way, no military discount either. If the prices were reasonable, this place would get five stars easily. read more

We love their food. My family loves making Steve cafe a stop for when we come to Helena for our Costco trips. This visit we got the California Benedict's, biscuits and gravy, and huckleberry French toast. Yes there will be a line... there is always a line. Steve's has a good breakfast to lunch offering. In Fall they have pumpkin pancakes with homemade warm syrup, a must have in my opinion. Hand packed sausage offered in a sampler is another favorite. For lunch the pulled pork sandwich with homemade BBQ is another hit. They offer daily specials and soup, chili daily or clam chowder on Friday. Good food, friendly staff you can't go wrong with Steve's. read more

I arrived at lunch time and the place was packed. I must have been just about 10 minutes behind everyone else because it cleared out in about a half hour. I had a patty melt and it was good. Now this is country cooking. It's simple & better than expected. The serving is INSANE! One of my favorites in Montana is their wild huckleberry, so I was so happy to see huckleberry menu items! I ordered the short stack of huckleberry pancakes with eggs & bacon. Their syrup is also huckleberry syrup & made in the restaurant. My bf ordered their infamous corn hash. We came here as recommended by one of my gfs during her wedding week and we were NOT disappointed. The ambiance is very welcoming & relaxing. The service was QUICK! We scheduled a late breakfast at 10am thinking it'll take us 2 hours there, but the food came so fast. We definitely weren't in Vegas anymore at this pace haha. I'm just glad to find a regular breakfast spot now in Helena esp since the last time I was in Montana was in 2008! At least when I decide to come back to visit, we know where to go now. Always seated promptly and greeted - I normally don't drink coffee at restaurants for breakfast unless they have latte's, etc. but I ALWAYS get coffee at Steve's. It is so good. Also the hash browns are always nice and crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. I love the Denver and Mushroom omelets as well as the ham scramble. Choose from 2 sides - hash browns, sliced tomato, fruit, toast or pancakes. The huckleberry pancakes are delicious as well - sweet, but really good! My wife an I have eaten at Steve's cafe 3 times an the food an staff are # 1AAA . Try the big bird an the sweet potato fries. It will knock your socks off. We eat at Steve's cafe on Custer. Ahggg worst waiter ever. We use to love to go to Steve's. We have been customers for years. But as of late food and service has declined rapidly. Today was the breaking point! What makes this place stand out is their family's home made sausage selection. My wife hates it when I order their Italian sausage breakfast because I loudly break out in a soulful rendition of Volare. You'd think after 50 + years of marriage she would be immune to embarrassment. If you eat here, the sausage is a must. The good thing about this place is that the food comes out very quickly I also love the hot sauce selection at every table. Love the green Tabasco for everything and the Red Tabasco with ketchup for my eggs. The food was a different story. Some highs and some lows. I ordered the Mexican Chipotle Sausage and Two Eggs Breakfast. The sausage was dry and crumbly, the casing didn't have that nice snap. I wouldn't consider the sausage spicy either. The hashbrowns that came with it were a on the light side, I prefer then browner with a bit of a crust. I also got a pancake plus a side of Huckleberry Syrup. The Menu listed a side of Huckleberry Syrup as 4oz but it came in a 2oz container. The clear 2oz container came with the pancakes while the French toast had the black 4oz container. $2.95 for 2oz wasn't really worth it. Breakfast burrito was great - very filling. However just the salsa was bland. Coffee was continually filled but a little weak. They offer bacon as "crispy or regular" The staff is very polite, wouldn't say friendly but polite. Sign at the front says if they're busy they will only seat full parties. Which I've experienced at the other location. read more

When I was messing around in Helena, I asked the four locals that were available "What is the best breakfast place in this town?" All four men replied with Steve's Cafe. It was a no-brainer to head to cafe de esteban to be nourished for the following day's massive activities. The host, waiter, and staff were awesome. Montana's hospitality is second to no other state (unlike Nebraska at rank 48 and that's cause I haven't been to two states yet). I did not try coffee here (had my own french press with the hotel). However, the ice cold water was refreshing. Food is standard diner food. It wasn't as OG as Waffle Plus in Spokane (sorry to compare) however beats the heck out of 90% Cali diner food. Veggie ommie - decent sized. It has olives so make sure to omit. The avocados not too shabby. Pancakes - Smaller than anticipated. Had nice thickness and not too dry. Tasted more commercialized (pre-made pancake batter) than a house recipe. Frenchie Toast - Standard size. Yummy. This was bomb with the crisp strawberries on top. The s-berry mix was sweet enough that it didn't need syrup. Plus the powdered sugar made it sweet too. Hash Browns - Commercialized. Came from a bag. Ya can taste it. They do give a good amount. Overall I loved the place. Can't compare it to any other local flare. Pricing - Appx $10 per head which is expensive for Montana. But that's what happens when you win a bunch of awards. read more

Before I went to have surgery at the VA my mom and I went here. The reviews and photos are what sold this place. Either we had an off day or its all a LIE! The coffee was disgusting and the waiter had to be the rudest person I have ever met. Plus, he violated Serv-safe on multiple occasions. He threw a tantrum when my mom asked for whip cream for her French toast. Then went and got some and threw it on the table. Multiple times he licked his fingers and would handle patrons plates. I was disgusted and the food was so outrageously greasy I could not stomach the combination. I am so sorry if this is the best place for breakfast in Helena. Talk about some amazing breakfast and people. With a family of five we like to each order something different and plate share. We tried the biscuits and gravy with hash browns and the gravy was nice and creamy. It had a hint of garlic whisk was great. The biscuits were fluffy and the hash browns were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the Inside. The huckleberry stuffed French toast was so good and paired it with the homemade apple chicken sausage which was perfect. The combo of the sweet fruity French toast and slightly spicy sausage was on point. The eggs Benedict was creamy and the Hollandaise sauce was the perfect tang.
