Because there is confusion between Old Salt and The Union, I posted this review under both: Went to the Union hoping for a fine dining experience in Helena. What I found was a pretentious, overpriced, underperforming eatery. Their hook is that they serve locally sourced ingredients cooked over a wood fire. PROS: wait staff was attentive and friendly; they did their job. Atmosphere was pleasant with the primary attraction being the wood burning fireplace visible throughout the restaurant. CONS: menu was very pricey and strictly al-la-cart (even the butter was an up charge). Steaks were expensive ($95 for a ribeye). My Sirloin was cooked perfectly, but very tough (I could hardly cut it with the knife provided). Bottom line: Overpriced Eatery! read more

Fresh fresh ingredients!!! This place shares a space with the bar next door. So don't be surprised by the set up. They have some tables squished between the bar and their order counter. Feel free to grab a drink at the bar. And it appears it's no issue to bring your drinks to the patio. Just be a good person and bring your glasses back. Anyways back to the amazing food. Looks like some of the ingredients are locally sourced. The cheeseburger was superb, but a reminder these are thinner burgers. So someone wanting a hearty burger should get a double. The single was enough for me. I also got the salad and it was delicious. I haven't had such fresh lettuce in a while - wow! And the cauliflower and slice root vegetable was fabulous. Oh and crispy chickpeas with a lightly tossed dressing - reminded me of the yummy German salads I would get. This salad really had that crunch. So good! Yeah the prices may be a little more expensive than some of the other cuisines in the area, but it seems on par with inflation everywhere. Oh and kids are welcomed with being in close proximity to the bar, I just didn't see any changing stations. Street parking is free after 5 pm and I believe weekends too. I finally got back to the Old Salt Outpost and was able to order food this time. If you remember from y last post; they ran out of burgers on a Friday night, (amateurs) I started at the bar and got a beer, asked for a menu but you have to go to the front to order food, ugh. Two separate tabs when traveling on business sucks for expanding. Order the single burger with fried potatoes from the person behind the cash register. Of course she asked for a tip. It took about ten minutes to have the food brought to me at the bar. I asked "where's the silver wears?" She pointed, "over there". I said "I'll get it", very sarcastically. We decided to try Old Salt based on the many good Yelp reviews and we are so glad we did. Initially, I wasn't going to come as I wasn't really in the mood for a burger but the reviews changed my mind. This place is basically a hamburger joint within a bar. I could see how this place could get super busy and noisy but we went on a Wednesday night. Old Salt has a very limited menu but the meat is theirs...... This is not Costco/Cash-N-Carry/Restaurant Depot/Sysco meat. It's the real deal and it's quality. We decided to split a cheese burger and the special of the day which was a housemade brat. We also ordered a salad and the beef fat potatoes. The cheeseburger, while just a simple burger, was terrific. You can taste the quality of the meat. This is not a big, thick burger but it is a quarter pound patty that is basically smashed (like Smashburger). The bratwurst was on a bun with mustard and cabbage/slaw. Sadly, the brat really didn't have much flavor at all. All I could taste was the mustard and cabbage. And the texture of the brat was gritty as if its fat content wasn't quite right. The potatoes kicked a$$. OMG. They are so good. Just get a large order and you will be happy. Lastly, I had the "Sturdy salad." I was not a fan of their salad dressing so I didn't eat much of the salad but you might like it and gobble it all down. Will we come back? Definitely. We would order the burger and beef fat potatoes. Located in the Gold Bar & Western, which seemed to have such a cool and welcoming vibe, is the Old Salt Outpost. They only sell one type of burger (single or double), one type of salad, and chili. While the menu isn't big, they have perfected the flavor. I'm not really a burger type of gal, but these burgers were perfect. The patties are perfectly seasoned and incredibly juicy. I got the double, but could've went with the single since the double was so huge. I know someone else mentioned that the burger bun didn't hold up for takeout, but mine seemed to hold up pretty well. Now let's talk about those potatoes... I like a good French Fry, but I don't go crazy for them. Those beef-fat potatoes were AWESOME. They were perfectly fried and crispy on the outside. I preferred dunking them in those incredible sauces, with the horseradish Mayo being my favorite (ranch was my 2nd fave; their burger sauce is good too, so if you're a fan of a thousand island type of dressing then go for this!). I got a salad as well because balance is everything. This is a salad for a person that appreciates greens.
