This is a very clean restaurant. The service was prompt and friendly. I ordered the chicken fried steak with hashbrowns and scrambled eggs. For starters, the gravy was good but very bland. Lacked basic flavoring. It seemed as though the chicken fried steak was frozen but it definitely was a bit over cooked. Steve's Cafe was once our "go-to" breakfast place when in Helena, but those days seem to be long over! The food quality and service are lacking a lot nowadays! I now see why the parking lot is no longer packed on weekend mornings! Two months ago when I was there I was shocked to find a huge wad of bubble gum stuck to my breakfast place! (eww gross!) This past weekend our waiter was not helpful at all. My garden omelet was served with onions, even though it was specifically ordered Without Onions! Since everyone else was halfway through their breakfasts, I asked for scrambled eggs, instead of having to wait for another omelet to be prepared. The waiter charged me for the scrambled eggs... I about fell upon the floor! Not only did I not get what I ordered, I was then asked to pay for what I had to have in its place! The waiter was also less than helpful when it came to placing an order for food my grandson can eat. He was very rigid, holding tight to what the kids menu consisted of and what it did not! I don't get to Helena real often and I had heard that Steve's was a great place to eat. I stopped last year, but the business was closed down due to Covid. My wife and I thought we would give it a try about a month or so ago. The meal was very good and the atmosphere was friendly and very personal. We made another trip to Helena today and when asked where she wanted to eat, my wife said "let's try that little diner again". Once again, we have a wonderful meal and the staff made us feel like we were family. You couldn't ask for better service. I would definitely put Steve's at the top of my list for places to eat in Helena. You can't go wrong. read more

I absolutely love Steve's. We started coming after a similar cafe seemed really unsafe about their Covid policies for staff and customers. Steve's has always been super conscientious about safety, and respecting their customers. We love the servers, and the atmosphere. So far, everything we have tried has been delicious. I like this diner. And this is saying something as I am not a diner kind of person. This place is NOT some greasy diner in which you don't really want to look around too hard for fear of what you might see, or touch the menu, or use the condiments on the table. Refreshingly, it is the complete opposite. I felt right at home here and had no qualms whatsoever about eating here. Yelpers did good on this joint! The food was delicious. I had the meatball sub which was not only good but filling. The meatball sub is made in house from their italian sausage. I'm kind of picky about sausage- there is some type of spice, perhaps fennel, that makes me want to hurl. This sausage and hence the meatball did not contain aforementioned hurl-inducing spice! {high five!} Italian coffee was good- served in a delightful, little branded cup. Refills were plentiful. My colleague got the turkey club with side of fries- she reportedly loved it. Of note portions are very large. Enough for 1.5-2 meals instead of one. [I ate all the meatballs, left the oversized bun and got a salad instead of the fries- this was satiating until well after dinner time. If one intends to eat the entire sub with bun and the fries I would say this is good for 1.5 meals. My colleague ate half of the club.] There was no wait at a 12:30p arrival on a business day. We have had several breakfasts here over the last few weeks. Everything was amazing. Kids and wife are gluten free, and they had some seriously delicious GF options. Very popular on the weekends, but even when they're busy the food comes out quick and tastes great. They always do a special design for my daughter's pancakes and their coffee is dark and delicious. I recommend the French dip and the Irish Benedict. read more

Steve's is the perfect breakfast/lunch diner in Helena. Its location is nice and central; close to the capital and not too far from downtown. The service is prompt, the atmosphere is comfortable, and the staff are patient and friendly! Now for the food...unbelievable! They have those thinly sliced hash browns that I think everyone just loves. And most importantly, they've got a stellar gluten-free menu that includes waffles, pancakes, toast, and all! I ordered the Denver omelet with hash browns and a side of pancakes. Unfortunately I forgot to ask them if they would make me huckleberry pancakes as a side. Oh well! Next time. This is one of the best places we have eaten! I am gluten free and their menu was amazing! Typically, you have a few items to choose from, but Steves gives you your own menu! The huckleberry pancakes and waffles were so tasty! My husband had an omelette for breakfast and when we went back for lunch he had a mushroom/Swiss burger! We were in the area for a college game and saw the Yelp's for Steve's. we went on a Friday morning around 930 and it was pretty busy. They have a decent menu with lots of choices and sides with your breakfast.(fruit, hash browns, cottage cheese, tomatoes. Pancakes) we were seated at a table and it was in the middle of booths. It was a tight fit and my husband had to move to let people in the booth behind us. That was my only complaint. The food arrived in a reasonable time, the service was good, the coffee refilled often. I had a veggie Omelet That was basic. My husband had the chili omelet made with home made chili. He said it was delicious. My daughter had the stuffed French toast with huckleberry. She enjoyed it but couldn't finish it because it was very sweet. All and all it was a good breakfast and we would return if in the area...and they must have changed their coffee because it didn't taste like motor Oil as Said in a previous review. One of the coolest things about Helena's beloved breakfast spot, Steve's Cafe, is that it is definitely not a greasy spoon, been-here-since-FDR-was-in-the-White-House sort of place. It's fairly new, having opened in 2009, but it's definitely a classic. Stuffed huckleberry and ricotta French Toast, huckleberry pancakes (anything with huckleberries, really), big omelets, and house-made sausages are standard fare, but what I really like is that they have an excellent oatmeal option: an organic, steel-cut variety with apple cider reduction, golden raisin and fresh apple compote, milk, and brown sugar. That, and a few cups of black coffee, will get your day started - if your day includes hiking in the rugged Gates of the Mountains wilderness (no boat trips, please - just dry feet), which is about the best Saturday morning/afternoon/evening activity you could possibly imagine. Sunrise breakfast at Steve's, followed by a backpacker's lunch atop the Mann Gulch ridgeline, and an early evening dinner of burgers, Lewis & Clark beer, and Maker's Mark bourbon at the York Bar: the perfect recipe for a perfect outdoor day, Helena, MT style. (OK, you can just have breakfast here and then cruise Last Chance Gulch, but it's nice to know that the other option exists, too). Cafe Special Oats and copious cups of black coffee: rocket fuel for the the hungry and restless soul. But the stuffed French Toast didn't look too shabby, either. read more
