It was an early morning and I had not eaten yet, my friend who worked nights was hungry so we decided to try this place. It was local, close to "home" and the photos looked great! LOL! I ended up getting the three egg breakfast, with linked sausage, hash browns and a couple lemon ricotta pancakes. My friend got two eggs, the huckleberry French toast and pork linked sausage. First, let's start with the positive notes. The place was clean, there dining room was big with plenty of open tables, our server was super nice and we were seated right away, the food was good for the most part. My over medium eggs were perfectly done, my lemon ricotta pancakes were delicious but the entire experience was ruined when the server brought out the bottle of TABLE SYRUP instead of maple syrup! I realize this is a small business but I haven't eaten Mrs Butterworth syrup since I was like a child. Anyway, the pancakes were fluffy, delicious and perfectly done, the sausage however had a soft mildly off-putting texture and the hash browns seemed old and had no flavor. Stopped into Hardware after researching Yelp! for breakfast spots while in vacation. It was a cute spot with plenty of seating inside, we were greeted by a nice hostess and had a 20 minute wait. Once seated we waited about 10 minutes for server to take our drinks, it was quite busy so this didn't seem super long. Our waitress was sweet and efficient, took our orders, brought drinks and kept them full. Food was good. Would visit again if we were in Montana. Wow! We stopped to pick up a trailer and found this little gem. Food was amazing. So good that my hubby tipped the kitchen. I had the French Onion Burger with fries and he had the brined chicken tenders with onion rings. The ranch dressing that was served with fries for dipping was obviously homemade. Located just outside Helena in a small strip center. There's plenty of parking right out front. This is my favorite place to eat in the Helena area. We came here 2 times in the week I visited. I got breakfast dishes both times I went here. My first meal was a huge omelette that was so much food I could not eat it all. Very nicely done with spinach and cheese and bacon. The hash browns were great. My second meal was a more traditional breakfast with scrambled eggs, bacon and hash browns with a side of pancakes. I usually do not eat pancakes but these looked good and the family on the first visit was raving about them. Oh my, I have no idea how they made them do good. First pancakes I have eaten since the 70's!! When I go back I will get them again! This would be a 5 star review for the first visit....our waitress was wonderful and despite 7 hungry people was cheerful and served all of us quickly and any requests we made were handled well. The second visit the food was awesome but the waitress was really below average. Long wait for anything that was requested and no smile ever made. However when I am in the area again I will be here several times. Drove the seven minutes from Helena proper to dine at this establishment which might just have the most delicious burgers in the area. They are a breakfast/lunch joint with everything on the menu from flavored pancakes and eggs Benedict to a walleye plate but we came for the burgers. I chose the "Hardware Select": cheese, red relish, onions, pickles on a brioche bun" while DD chose the Burger AU Poiv: Brie cheese, arugula, red onions and peppered aioli on a brioche bun. Both were great, the Hardware was a classic burger while the au poiv was a nice change. Burgers are served with onion rings, fries, a cup of soup or a side salad. I chose onion rings while DD went with fries so we could sample both. The fries were homemade and very tasty as were the onion rings. I also had a bowl of clam chowder which was the soup of the day and I wished I had upgraded to a bowl. It was homemade and spot on. DD also ordered a bowl of French Onion because it's her favorite. It turned out to be entree sized and she had to take it with her. Their motto is "our food is excellent" and they are correct. Our server was great. She was busy but always checked on us and promptly got refills when she saw our drinks were low. I had the coffee which was fantastic. They roast the beans in house and you can buy the beans if you like. The ambience here was pleasant. Clean and well lit it's not fancy. There were old cooking implements and tins on a shelf that ran along the wall and lots of Montana pictures on the wall too. There are a few booths but mostly tables. There is lots of parking spaces right in front. My cousin tells me the also have a drive up place in Helena that mainly sells burgers and fries but it's worth the seven minute drive to Montana City to give the Hardware Cafe a try. Highly recommended. I had the Huckleberry Pancakes with sausage patties and added an egg over medium. The egg was perfect, the pancakes were awesome (2 fairly large, fluffy pancakes with a huckleberry topping) and the sausage was good. My wife had the Berries and Cream pancakes with bacon. It was really good. The strawberries and cream topping was sweet and the bacon was slightly better than the sausage. This place is SO good! Amazing breakfast with a ton of options. Chicken and Waffles were special, and the chicken so flavorful and delicious. The pancakes were perfection, and the waffles crisp and tender. The sweets had a cream cheese type icing on them, which made the kids' day, and I couldn't complain mimosas and bloodymaries were on the menu, too. Holy cow! This food is so dang good. I got the egg white omelette, and it was delish. The hashbrowns are the awesome kind that are crunchy on the outside and soft potatoey on the inside. Stopped here for breakfast on our way to Glacier. The food was excellent! Can't recommend the huckleberry cinnamon roll enough! The restaurant was busy, but we're seated right away and the service was great. They even roast their own coffee there which was very good. I had the hash and eggs and was happy with my meal. The hash is made in house and not your standard "out of a can" offering. Good choice. Eggs cooked as ordered and hash browns crispy. My wife's pancakes were different and had an odd texture. Not anything we would order again. We love this place but we're disappointed today. Met another couple there at lunchtime and frankly the table for 4 was not big enough especially with the condiment tray. The real problem was both my wife and I ordered breakfast and both were warm at best. It was not busy so I suspect a mixup in the kitchen left our food waiting. I ordered 3 eggs and sausage and only got 2 eggs and cold toast. I will go again but hope this was a momentary slip. read more
