Steve's is the best bakery aka the "donut daddy" in this area hands down! We've been coming here for many years on our way to starved rock state park. The glazed raised are large and fluffy. The filled donuts are just that FILLED! The cake donuts are nicely dense and great with a hot cup of coffee. All ingredients are top quality. No oil residue on the donuts or the box! Nicely priced. They have a silver cabinet to the right just after you enter with day old items. I've purchased a few items and found they were just like fresh out of the counter! I wish I would have thought to take pictures, but honestly, I was too busy trying to decide what to get bc everything looked SO GOOD!! my "go to" is always a cream filled donut (Not custard, mind you). I'm a cream filled donut snob for sure. Steve's are heavenly. I wish I would've bought more than two!! We made the trip back in the next day to take a dozen or so home with us home, as we were visiting the area from downstate Illinois. But they were sold out of nearly everything by 9am on a Friday. After reading the reviews about the mean nasty aggressive employees at this bakery I have decided not to order anything from them At one time I had a donut from this place and felt ill after a short time. I think they use old oil to fry in or some cheap bad for health tropical, possible cheap palm oil to fry the donuts in I do not know this as a fact, but rather a conjecture with the after eating symtoms and reports I have heard from others reporting the same symtoms. I do not get any untoward syptoms after eating bakery from other renowned area bakeries, i. E. Spring Valley Trefzgers Peoria, just this place, it has to some ingredient in the product or the cooking oil. read more

Nevertheless, the strawberry and cream cheese, blueberry, and glazed strawberry filled donuts were quite the treat. The donuts were fresh, flavorful, and quite decadent! Steve's has been providing my birthday cakes from 1995 until I moved away when I was an adult. My family is from Ottawa and while most of them reside and get to enjoy Steve's , I get to live in my childhood dreams. Whenever I do go home, this is one of the first places I stop. Donuts are always so fresh and taste so good. They are never too sweet. I can still remembered the chocolate cake with buttercream icing every year for my birthday since I was a little girl. I dropped by a few minutes before closing and the lady behind the counter wasn't too friendly. She was busy writing and putting away things from the display case. She did finally acknowledge me and I left with two good sized chocolate glazed donuts for $2 out the door. There weren't many options besides chocolate or vanilla glazed. It was a typical yeast donut, but it was nicely glazed. However, the glaze didn't taste any different from what one comes to expect from a dunkin perhaps. The exterior isn't much to look at, but don't let that fool you. The interior is clean, well decorated and there's quite a few tables to sit down and enjoy your baked goods. They've got some good donuts, so big and fluffy yet doughy. I got the lemon jelly and butterscotch glazed, and oh wow it was hard to not eat them both all in one sitting. Good donuts aside, everything else is just below average. It's not much of a looker from the outside, and unfortunately not on the inside either. I hate to say it, everything was just drab and dreary. From their undecorated white walls and seatings to the plain grocery store display cases, nothing gives off a bakery vibe other than their name. Their selections, plain and basic, not much creativity. I honestly can say their boring everything-ness brought down my enthusiasm to try their food. The baked goods are delicious however don't count on special ordering ANYTHING. If you don't want what they have on hand, tough luck. I called 2 days ahead of time to order Halloween cookies. They told me no problem and to just call first thing in the morning and they will get them ready for me. My first clue should have been "call in the morning" my second when they did not need to take my name. I called at 6am and the girl that answered said they don't have any. I am so frustrated with this part time, no service bakery, I am NEVER buying another thing from them. They are not even very nice. We found this little gem on our way to Colorado. It was so amazing we looked it up on our return trip two weeks later. It's an easy stop off the highway if you are passing through on a road trip. Some of their items are great, but they have some serious customer service issues. Someone who seemed to be a manager or owner came in while I was there and started yelling at the crew, really browbeating one of them because she did something wihtout permission. I get her being upset, but I don't get humiliating your employees in front of customers and other employees. It was embarrassing to watch. When I suggested that it should be done privately, she told me not to look. Then she punished me by refusing to sell me a brownie. I was in Ottawa for a family event and had a little extra time to kill. I wandered in here and had what will likely be the best doughnut I will ever eat in my life. They are clearly made in house and have a great rural Midwest feel. Really nice vibe and excellent staff. Everyone who lives in Ottawa or the nearby area needs to go here because it is so close. Everyone from Chicago who is visiting should eat here because you just can't find this quality in the city! I recommend the double chocolate. Just visited this place for the first time today. Staff was super friendly and knowledgeable. The apple fritter was light and had the perfect crispiness on the outside. The double chocolate cake is a chocoholic's dream come true. I highly recommend this bakery to anyone in the area or going thru it. read more

Ugh where to begin?!? My son turned one on the 13th and since I have loved their cakes before, I ordered his cake from Steve's as well as a smash cake. I live in the suburbs so my parents stopped to pick up the order on their way to my place which is about an hour and a half away. Come to find out, they were not given the smash cake. I then called and the girl on the phone who said her name was Jennifer just kept saying, "Well that's just stupid...whoever did that is stupid!" She then started asking who gave the order but it sounded like no one was claiming such. She talked about possibly refunding some of what we paid and then told me I'd get a call back later. Later I received a voicemail which referred to ME as Jennifer & the person stated they were Dawn. The voicemail simply said we did not take the smash cake therefore there is nothing to refund. When I called back, the girl who answered said she was Jennifer & also the person who left the message. So I asked why she referred to me as Jennifer & herself as Dawn on the voicemail & she just said, "Huh?" Luckily I had found a friend who could arrange for the smash cake to be picked up & I explained that, but that I also felt I should be compensated somehow. Jennifer reluctantly agreed to give the smash cake at no charge, but sounded very angry about it. My girlfriend picked the smash cake up later only to find that it only had my son's middle name listed on it, yet the other cake had the correct name. At this point the mistake couldn't be fixed because the party was the following day & there was no one else local to pick up a new cake. I called one last time to express my frustration & asked to speak to an owner/manager. The girl on the phone was SO COMPLETELY rude, I'm still floored! She told me no one was there, she'd have to take a message, she asked, "what's the problem?" When I asked if I could reach them at another location (since there is another bakery in Streator) she said, "I'm not giving you their home number!!" As if I was actually asking for their home phone! Lol. She then said, "They work nights!!" As if I should know that. I then asked for her name and she asked me why. I told her that I did not like her attitude & I wanted to complain and she then hung up on me! Again I was and still am just floored!!! I cannot ever imagine talking to a customer that way! Later that afternoon I called the Streator location and I believe I spoke to a Barb who seemed nice. I told her the whole story & requested a call back, but I still have not heard back! Mistakes happen, but make things right, and don't treat paying customers horrible!Do people really hire people like the employees in Ottawa?? And do people really run businesses like THAT?!? I stopped using Steves Bakery some time ago. I used to be a big fan until I had under baked muffins and a bad sheet cake. Staff instructed me to return product and speak with owner. The owner would not return my calls finally I caught her in the business. She was rude and loud to me in front of other customers. She said she had thrown out the product and nothing was wrong with it. I can bake so do other businesses in Ottawa and they care if there is a problem with their goods. read more

This is the most unprofessional bakery with the most unprofessional staff I have ever had the displeasure of visiting! I have used this bakery for years spend hundreds of dollars on all my children's cakes and never had a problem until July when they messed up the spelling on my sons graduation cake AFTER calling to confirm the week before I called as soon as my mom got me the cake and talked to the owner to be told there was nothing that could be done she was busy! She gave me a credit and guaranteed it had no expiration date on it! Today I sent my mom to pick up another cake with the credit that was still there and what do you know staff was rude, said it expired, and refused to give her my credit that was promised me!
