I believe that this is one of the only dance stores on island that has been established for awhile now. It's been YEARS since I've stepped foot into Step N Up and it's so refreshing to make a visit again! The directions to the store is a little bit tricky. The best way to get here AND to avoid traffic with left signal turn-ins is to take the freeway to here exiting king st on 25A. The store is located in its own park lot between fukuyama & the humane society -- so i would drive steady when you find the store. The store was clean & they open 9a-5p on Saturdays. The parking is a bit tight but i was able to find one. Sure enough, the store is tidy and organized. This is a great store for your dancers and studios! The ladies at the front were very helpful! I needed new dance tights and they assisted with sizing and by skin tone preference. I also got new pirouettes and something to know is that they don't go by street size shoes-- they are sized by the width of your foot. I got the color and sizing that I was looking for overall! There are lots of items in stock. If you're looking for something specific, I'd call ahead of time just in case. Step N Up is a Hawaii staple. Growing up on Oahu, everyone knows that Step N Up is the only place for your dance apparel. Actually, I'm pretty sure people from other islands also come to Oahu or order from here because it's the only place to get everything you need. We got sent here from my daughter's preforming arts company and I'm so glad they recommended this place. My daughter needed jazz shoes for her performance and I'm not super knowledgeable in these things. I assumed they had to fit correctly and sizes might be different so we went into the store to try things on and pick up her shoes. The girl that helped us was so nice and sweet she helped my daughter try on shoes and made sure they fit right. She also gave me information on the leggings and how they should fit. I haven't been here in ages, as in, I haven't been here since they've been at their university square location (which is now Hale Mahana Apartments). Now, it's on the first floor of a mini shopping plaza on S King going towards the west side, just off the King Street freeway exit. Once you exit, stay in your right lane going to Moiliili and veer left to stay on King street. You'll see it on your right. Step n up has really stepped up their game. Their store has a much better layout and there is ample selection for the space that they have. Leotards are on the left, clothing is in the middle, and shoes are on the right of the store. The register is in the front of the store and scrunchies are located near the register. Their new purchasing system is a neat upgrade too. The Aunty who runs the shop is super friendly and helpful. On this visit, I came for jazz shoes. Half of me was expecting to only see kids sizes, but there were lots of adult sizes in tan and in black. Slip on and split sole too!How nice. There is also a wide array of ballet slippers (canvas and leather) and tap shoes. And if you schedule with them in advance, they also do pointe shoe fittings. Everyone who comes into the shop gets an automatic 20% off (support our only local dance store now, c'mon), so my shoes came out to be $30.99. How neat. And I believe exchanges are free too :) For any purchase, you are more than welcome to try them on before actually going through with the purchase. DANCEWEAR and ZUMBA SHOES! This is where you go to buy leotards, tights, ballet shoes, tap dancing shoes, pointe, jazz and hip hop clothes starting from when you are tiny toddler sizes (2T) up to women's sizes. I went here to buy my daughters first "ballerina" leotard, tights, shoes, etc. They have all different colors, with or without skirts, and all the "accessories" that you apparently need when you are 3 years old and take a dance class. AND THEN I ENDED UP BUYING MYSELF THE BEST PAIR OF ZUMBA SHOES EVER!!! The shoes are "dance" shoes so they have no "grip" on the bottom which makes them perfect for pivots, que te mueve, and other merengue type steps which normally put a lot of torque on your knees. Dancers have been using these shoes for decades so they aren't anything new. These shoes are similar to the Capezio dance shoes or other similar brands. BACK TO THE SHOES: If you are using regular aerobic shoes for Zumba classes, and you are having knee issues, you really gotta try these shoes! They are better than the Nike Zoom dance shoes that I used to wear for Zumba because: 1. They have an air cushion in the heel portion to absorb shock when you jump or do impact type exercises. (the Zoom shoes don't have great shock absorbers, I feel every jump in my knees) 2. They have a great pivoting sole under the "balls" of your feet that really take the torque off your knees. It makes your moves more fluid and free. 3. Good arch support. If you have NO ARCH (flat footed), these shoes will not work for you. 4. They are lightweight! I absolutely love coming here for my daughter's dance outfits. They have such friendly and helpful staff and really are spot on with cutsomer service. I recently had called before they opened and I wanted to set up a curbside pick up due to COVID I wasn't sure of their policies. I found out that they didn't open until 10am, I called at 9:30am and the manager Gina took my call and set aside my items to pick up despite them not being open yet! I am so glad and thankful to have an amazing supplier such as this. Gina also did let me know that they are available for walk-in's and are open fully as well. Also, they do appointments for pointe shoe fitting and purchases as those can take awhile to do. Based on all the amazing reviews on yelp for this store, after my first experience here getting ballet and tap shoes for my daughter I double guessed myself, assuming I was just too harsh and/or high maintenance. But after a second subpar experience I figured this store and I were just not meant to be. We picked out my daughter's ballet shoes with relative ease, although only after the salesgirl that we were working with got some instructions from her coworker on where the ballet shoes were, etc. That wasn't a big deal. And then we moved on to tap shoes... I was given a pair of tap shoes to try on my daughter that seemed way too tight for her, as in I didn't think I could even insert her foot all the way without causing her a considerable amount of pain. The sales clerk seemed to disagree with me and it took me making multiple requests for a larger size (and coaxing from that other coworker) before a new shoe was procured. The shoes still seemed pretty tight to me but in lieu of my silent daughter saying anything (who was clamping up in front of strangers), I deferred to the sales clerk who assured me that that was how the shoes should fit. I figured what the heck did I know and purchased the tap shoes. I should have had more confidence in my opinions as I was back a month later looking for a bigger size of tap shoes as my daughter had quickly outgrown her first pair. I asked for a size 1.5 higher than her last pair in the hopes that it would be awhile before I had to buy a third pair. The store didn't have the size I asked for in stock so instead they brought out the exact same size she had just outgrown and asked if I wanted to try it on again. (What??!!!!) When I stated I clearly needed a bigger size the sales clerk produced shoes 4 sizes bigger than what I asked for, saying it was the next option they had available. I asked if the sizing was just an issue in the current brand I was looking at and was told that yes, in different brands they had a lot more size options. I asked to try on a different brand that was in the size I wanted but was ignored. Instead the sales clerk went to check out another customer. I patiently waited and when the sales clerk finished up with the other customer I asked again to try on a different brand. My question was ignored and instead the sales clerk told me about how they could order the shoe size I wanted if I didn't mind waiting for it to come in. Since I wanted to make sure that I got the right size I asked if there was a least a sample size that I could try on before ordering the shoe. The sales clerk walked away at this point, seemingly done communicating with me. I swear I was completely nice and actually overkill on being sweet during our entire encounter so I can't think of any reason why the sales clerk wouldn't want to continue to talk to me. Based on the unhelpfulness of the staff (excluding the helpful trainer from my first visit) and the fact that they don't even carry sample sizes so you can try on shoes you want to mail order, I do not recommend this store to anyone. read more

That was great cuz I was new to the dance thing and I had no idea what I was looking for! The lady that helped was so very helpful with helping us find everything that we needed. She helped us find the perfect shoes that fit. She was very thorough on the different sizes and made sure that it was comfortable. We also got lucky and there was a 30% off sale on certain leotards. So I had to come here for my daughters ballet and tap clothes and shoes. Considering that it's the ONLY place in Hawaii, it's a slight monopoly, BUT that aside, this place was very nice. The manager helped me find the clothes, right sizes, and tell me HOW to put on ballet stuff for my daughter.... lord knows her panties would be on the outside if I had to dress her all on my own. Pricing was fair considering everything, shoesx2, leotard, tutu, and came to about $86 following the discounts from the academy that were applied. Step N Up Hawaii is the perfect place for all your dance needs! My nephew needed some jazz shoes for his dance class and I was quickly helped after inquiring about them. Many sizes were available and his size was in stock. The employee was very knowledgeable and helpful with helping to determine the right size. At the register, the employee asked which school it was for and then gave me a $7 discount after I let her know. So awesome! Price was reasonable too at about $30 for a pair of shoes. Came here from out of town since I forgot my daughter had ballet camp once we return from vacation (holiday). Came in after having a Lyft driver drop us off on some random side street and made us walk 4min to step n up. The woman who helped us was super friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful with getting us the items we needed. Didn't know much about ballet slippers but she helped size my daughter and let her try in Leo's and wraps. Lucky we found this place. Would definitely recommend it. I had not been to Step N Up in over ten years. Ever since achilles tendonitis took my dance dreams and smashed them mercilessly into the ground leaving me weeping over my dance-less life, I have not been in need of dance wear. In fact, I found even thinking about the store depressing because of what could have been. Which would have been amazing despite my short stature and lack of breast size... Yeah. What am I talking about? Right, so I found myself boldly walking into this establishment of old in search of shoes for my newfound passion, zumba (yes I'm a tad behind, what of it?). Guess what? Everything in the store was 20% off! Score. guess what else? In the last ten years dance sneakers have dropped from $90 a pair to only $55! Score. Guess what's even better than reasonably priced dance sneakers? Reasonably priced dance sneakers in bright green and pink with a hibiscus embroidered into its side. SUPER SCORE! There was only one pair left in size 8, but I shoved my foot in there ala Cinderella's step sisters and I MADE it fit. Would I have been more comfortable in a 9? Maybe. But those only came in boring colors. It is better to look good than to feel good. If you recognize this quote then you're extra cool. The store had shelves and shelves of dance sneakers, ballet slippers, jazz shoes, character shoes, etc. plus a wall of brightly colored zumba wear and the customary racks of leotards, tights, and teeny little shorts I used to wear when this body was still on the firm side. I tried on several cargo pants but felt they did not properly hug my buttocks. My buttocks need to be hugged. When I was trying on my shoes the salesperson said "Are these for zumba?", to which I wanted to reply "No, I'm a real dancer damnit!". I suppose the combination of my garish color choice plus my age and jiggly bits caused her to conclude the only reason I would need shoes is to exercise in a dance-ilke way. The sad truth. Overall, a decent selection for a small dance store in Hawaii and very nice staff. I will definitely be bringing my daughter in as soon as she turns three and I start forcing her to take dance classes. I have no idea what goes into dance attire, I just know I needed to get a leotard, tights, and some ballet slippers for my daughter who wants to be a "Ballerina Princess". This place is like every little ballerina's dream. My little 3 year old LOVED trying on her new dance slippers. She also enjoyed trying on her PINK leotard. I have to say I think we came at a right time because we were the only ones in the store. From what the other dance moms said it gets busy because of some of the dance classes. I really have no idea about the classes, but I would love to know the days since I don't want to come on a busy day the next time I have to stop to purchase something dance related. The worker was really nice. The first thing she did was confirm what dance studio we were attending and the class my daughter was in. She got everything ready for me in no time. Found an old gift card my oldest daughter got like 5+ years ago. They took it with no questions asked. Was able to buy some dance items for my 5 year old daughter! Went on a Saturday morning and the place was packed. Workers were friendly and patient. Love their new location in Mo'ili'ili which is right next to an awesome ham sandwich shop and below a kick ass barre studio. So you can get eat a sandwich, grab a dance leotard and work off that sandwich at barre class. Or you can do what I do, and just eat a sandwich, buy some leg warmers so you can re-enact 'Flashdance' in front of the mirror at home, and then lie in bed remembering the last time your butt muscles hurt for two weeks straight after taking that barre class. I say, whatever works for you... I've come to Step N Up so many times over the years and I have to say this is the best space out of all their locations. It's clean and very organized. I once came in looking for a Sia & Maddy costume (ala 'Chandelier' re-inactment) but that nude leotard and tights just didn't look right and I decided to save myself from years of therapy from public embarrassment via shared facebook photos. So now instead of coming here for clothes for myself, I come here for dance attire for my two little ballerinas. My daughters are both currently obsessed with ballet and Step N Up is the perfect place to get their colored leotards and dance shoes. They have the requirements for most of the studios on the island and the salespeople are always very helpful. I love taking my children to ballet and always feel good knowing they've got the right gear in place. located right next to Honey Glazed Hams on south king street, i've stepped into this store a number of times in the past few months to get the necessary dance wear for my daughter's classes - leotards, tights, ballet slippers, tap shoes, jazz shoes and dance shorts. they also have cute ballerina skirts and cardi wraps, nail polish, bags and accessories, from toddler to adult sizes. what do i like about them? where do i start? first of all, the staff is super nice and helpful! for a newbie dance mom, i was clueless, but they are familiar with the dance schools, how things fit, and even keep a record of your purchases in case you forgot what sizes you bought before (hey, it happens)! remember to keep the tags on and they'll exchange it if it doesn't work out. they also have a perennial 20% discount, making it very reasonable to outfit your little dancer. bottom line: Step N Up steps it up in terms of dance wear inventory, expertise and price. they deserve a standing ovation! read more
