Stemma Pils -- some say it's Bellingham's best beer
Paul H.

The OG Stemma location is great for families! Food trucks make it a perfect weeknight meal. Service is always top notch - the crew is super friendly. Vibe is great - low key, not too loud, not too quiet.

Yum!

First, I think Stemma is one of the best of the very, very many breweries in Bellingham. And their original location on Moore Street has a number of food trucks, including Burnt Side Down that is pretty well known for their toasted cheese sandwiches. If I was going to be critical, I would just tell you is that their flight of 4x4 ounce beers which they charge $12 plus tax and tip seems on the high side but... maybe that's just me. Recommend... but don't forget their newer location at the old twin sisters location... That's a good place too.

Open tap room with three food trucks on site. This brewery came recommended from a couple previous stops. The covered patio was pretty full, a good sign. Parking was a little sparse for spaces. I forgot to ask our beertender who the cut out was of, see pics. I missed it when we arrived but as we left we noticed a lounge-ish area in the corner with comfortable chairs and a couch. I liked how open it was, perfect weather for it. I like color, so I liked the lime green walls. I didn't peruse it but noticed they had a merch area. All the tables were standard height, thanks. Thanks Stemma for the delicious beer in a comfortable tap room, cheers.

Great brewery just off the highway with a few food trucks on site! Stopped here on the way back to Portland from Canada and it was a great place to try a few beers and get some food. Big outdoor space and friendly staff.

Stopped to check out a few breweries in town while passing through and had heard a lot about Stemma! Super convenient too as it was right off 5 and had a nice little parking strip off the road. Beers: Conditus Lager Ammets IPA Oppan Dunkel Garden Party Hefeweizen I liked the vibe of this spot and they had three food trucks on site, three! It was a Tuesday, that's got to be a big win for them if that's the norm, as I've been to at this point 150+ breweries and that's a rarity. Lindsay is the beer tender on candid camera and she was so awesome! She was so nice, conversational, and attentive. She also hooked us up with a few recommendations of other places to check out in town. The beer itself I thought was solid. Standouts: The lager was a lemon and cayenne pepper with a nice heat to it. Hefeweizen had a solid banana to clove ratio. Only thing I'd change out of the grouping would have been more malt in the dunkel, but perhaps it fits the local palates best less sweet? Definitely recommend Stemma and hope you get Lindsay! Make sure you take care of her !

Another stop on vacation! We were driving to Canada on our way from Seattle and Bellingham has it all. First stop there was Stemma. Lindsay the beer tender was so sweet and when we asked her fave brewery aside from here she grabbed a map and walked us through her favorites as well as other places in the area. The beers were tasty and they had a great variety. I really liked their conditus lager. Sweet and spicy! They have food trucks on site and for a weekday they seemed pretty steady. Both outdoor and indoor seating available. Very clean too!

Stemma was awesome! Great beers, food trucks outside, and dog friendly; what more could you ask for? The staff here were awesome, super helpful in picking out which beers to try. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Stemma is definitely now among our favorite breweries in Bellingham!

Waffles and Beer!

Stopped into Stemma specifically to try Sweet As Waffles! Waffles and beer, y'all! What could make it any better?!?!? Well, tiny dinosaurs and an otterlope, that's what! We both opted for sweet waffles - a Coconut Cascade, add toasted marshmallows, and a Baker Blast. Both were wonderful and paired nicely with Stemma's Pluitt Porter and Three Points Berey Smoothie Ale, respectively. The waffles are warm and crispy and not too sweet. The toppings are plentiful without overpowering the waffle. Nicely balanced!! Oh, and each is topped with a tiny dinosaur. (My only question is trying to figure out "who they are as an artist" (h/t American Idol)... how do you tie together "Sweet As Waffles", dinosaurs, and an Otterlope?... inquiring minds want to know!) Just keep making those waffles!!! Stemma is a great venue - nice outdoor space with shade and sun, and a roomy indoor area. Lots of tables to enjoy your waffle (or Mexican delights from Chihuahua). And, of course, Stemma has great beer across the styles as well as a selection of hard seltzers and ciders. And if you need dessert after your waffle, they also have West Coast Pops!

I've only been here a few times but every experience was a good one! The staff are always friendly and I never wait long for my drink. It's a great place to hang out with friends! I usually have ciders when I go out. I've noticed when I ask about ciders they have you sample their seltzer they make. It's not bad but it's not my kind of drink. There's been a good truck whenever I've gone. There is also a waffle place right next to Stemma. I haven't tried it yet but I really want to! I recommend this place!

We sought this out as part of the Bellingham Tap Trail. I was happy to find a new brewery I had not previously experienced in the Bellingham area. We showed up on a Sunday and it was pretty crowded, we were happy to have been able to find some street parking and almost opted to go elsewhere when we saw how all the nearby spots were filled up. We snagged a seat at the bar, it was a bit of a tight squeeze in and out of those seats. However the tap list was pretty great, the person behind the bar was super friendly and they had the cutest cat taking a nap in the brewing area. Everyone who walked by snapped a picture of it and I also didn't want to miss out. They had 4 IPAs on tap at the time, and we both opted to try one although I was also tempted by the Hazy. I had the Ammets IPA, intrigued by the hints of watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe, but can't recall which one my partner chose. Even though we had planned to just have one beer we soon realized that we had mistakenly overlooked the Conditus Lager which was a spiced beer with hints of lemon and cayenne. I'd definitely make this place a regular stop off if it was in my area.

The only issue I have with Stemma is there isn't one closer to my house in Bellevue! I have to drive all the way to Bellingham to enjoy this gem of a brewery. Who else routinely has smoothie beers? The banana slushie ale was delicious, and they even let me get it in a sampler size! The employees here were super friendly, and all of the beers were solid. Outside seating was delightful and they had a good taco truck out front. Next time I'm in Bellingham I'll be making it a point to visit Stemma again.

Three cheers for another amazing new brewery in Bham! Stemma came onto the burgeoning beer scene this summer, and just happens to be the closest brewery to my house (danger danger). I'm in lovvvvve with their Amber ale, which isn't the easiest beer to find in this IPA-centric town. It's rich, malty, and complex with not too much (but just enough) hops to keep it interesting. I also love Stemma's light industrial, open-yet-welcoming vibe. They've got a nice bar to sit at if you're alone, and plenty of tables for groups large and small. In the corner is a cozy seating area with couches, and outside is a small beer garden for the sunnier days. If you go, be sure to keep an eye out for their brewery cats - including Zeus, quite possibly the world's cutest kitten. I'll confess I've been back twice recently, just to cuddle with him! (While enjoying my beer, of course.)

Hazy IPA before I forget.

For somebody who likes iPAs, it's always a good sign when 7 out of 14 beers on the menu are iPAs. When on top of that they are tasty it makes it even better. Color me surprised when I discovered another beer that blew me away. Conditus Lager. Try it if you can. Some of their brews are available for takeout in normal 16oz cans, and for those that aren't (like the Conditus Lager) you can get in a 32 oz. crowler. The space is clean and modern with very quiet background music, so it's easy to have a conversation. Family and pet friendly to boot. They don't have their own food, but a food truck Mon-Sat, and a waffle place Thu-Sun. I enjoyed it, and I'll be back soon.

The patio is nice because it has lights and heat, but MY GOD the bar stools are not comfortable. I felt like my legs were gonna have bruises and my lower back was gonna be sore. We are both young and active people but were DYING on the barstools. It was also odd to be so high up when we had dogs on the ground, as it made it hard to manage them. We ended up putting them in the car because it was such an awkward height distance (they are small dogs). I was excited about the online menu since they had a lot of gluten free options. The menu in person was different than the menus I saw online and on Yelp. Not too different, just definitely a rotation/seasonal element. I perhaps had some gluten free vegan wings in my heart that have not seen the menu in a while but are posted online a lot. I got a hawaiian style bowl with tofu and my fiance got a sandwich. We each got a cocktail as well, and our total was $100. I thought this was a little steep, but we did like everything we got. I will go back, but probably without dogs and without a dream of what I see on the online menu.

I had the pleasure of visiting Kulshan on their very first night of operation, which was a longggg time ago. At that time, the only other two major breweries in town had full kitchens and great menus, and Kulshan planned to only feature food trucks. I thought this was a horrible idea! Especially considering, at the time, there weren't all that many food trucks around. Well, I was wrong. Kulshan concentrated on making good beer, and serving it up with a friendly smile in their warm, inviting little space. Food trucks have come and gone over the years, but the beer has remained consistently amazing, the staff welcoming, and the space is almost exactly the same (with a couple of minor mods, including removing the dart board many moons ago). They've also since opened a second, larger location, adding "K2" and the Trackside Beer Garden to a list of what is now many, MANY breweries in the city. This is definitely a must-visit on any Bellingham beer pilgrimage. Thanks, Kulshan, for all those good beers over the years!
