It is one of those diners that you'd see in the movie: counter and booth seats, small town feel, a lot of hustle. There was a line at around 11:30 am already on a Saturday morning but we wrote our name down and were seated in about 10 minutes. It did not feel long and more people were coming in. I ordered a Monte Cristo sandwich: plain french toast with ham and cheese, some powdered sugar on top. In fact, the toast was not cinnamon-y and mingled well with the savory filling. The potion was not huuuuge but generous to fill you. I got home fries as the side (HUGE) and they came in slices, instead of small chunks. However, I did not get much golden brown crusts while my friend got a lot. I brought home 3/4 of it. My friend ordered a Cuban sandwich that came as an open face and the filling was completely out on top of the roll. It was not what we expected at all. But she finished the filling and left the bread. In fact, the roll, sliced open and inside exposed, did not look attractive underneath. And the cheese, apparently was just a few pre-slices that looked thin and not melted homogeneously. Overall I think people come here more for the nostalgic atmosphere than the food. read more

Okay, positive points first. 1. The service was good. 2. The coffee was hot. But.... The food at Stella's is less than stellar and honestly nothing to write home about. My Son's short stack was crunchy on the outside and rather chewy... they were FAR from light and fluffy pancakes. His side of hash was decent, but the cubes of meat were rubbery. My meal (Biscuits & Gravy, over easY eggs, hash and grits) was salty. I tried to eat past it because I was hungry, but I could not and left 2/3 of it behind. Even an hour later my tongue is recovering from the salt. Sometimes when trying new places there are keepers and there are avoiders. For me, Stella's will not make it's way into my Yelp Bookmark queue nor can I recommend it. read more

Amazing service and wonderful large portions of food. The Fretta has always been good but I have had to back off it due to health concerns. The staff gave me hot water (I know) with no questions and gave me a healthy alternative to my usual treat. I not only enjoy Stella's on my own but enjoy taking my 19 year old daughter and 23 year old son out for breakfast. Never has a bad meal there and the staff is on par with the casual Dinosaur wait staff. Happy, hustling and hilarious if you have a sense of humor. I expected a lot given tons of good reviews, and we were attracted by the wide variety of $5 meals on the kids menu. We went on a Friday evening with our kids around 6:30. They were nice and got toys for the kids, so I thought we were off to a great start and going to have a wonderful experience. We ordered milkshakes, which came about 5 minutes later, but then the waitress disappeared and we couldn't order our food for awhile... which is stressful when you're dining out with 3 little ones who are hungry after a long day! We finally ordered from the expansive menu, waited awhile longer, and got our food. They forgot my side of fries, so we reminded them when another waitress came by later, and received them midway through the meal. Our son loved the spaghetti and meatballs (which was a huge portion), and my husband liked his burger. The kids pizza was small, super thin, and not very appetizing looking. My daughter wouldn't touch it. I ordered the Italian Chicken Pita Platter, and while what I received was good, it didn't match the menu description. The menu said grilled chicken and fresh mozzarella with tomato basil bruschetta, but mine basically came with salad and nothing tomatoey. I wasn't going to fight it after waiting so long for our food. The baby started to lose it, so we were ready to leave, but again had to wait for the waitress to come back. She came back to ask about boxes and left very quickly so we couldn't ask for the check. I ended up taking our screaming child to the car while my husband waited to pay so we could go. Overall, the food was good (although doesn't exactly follow the menu) and I wouldn't call it kid-friendly just because of the wait. This place has a cult following and is famous for the scalloped potatoes among other things. They usually feature a wide dessert option as well. The food is consistent and good. Just be prepared to wait as like I said it's got it's regular and followers. I enjoy the breakfast personally. They have some wonderful sandwiches and meals to choose from. Although Stella's is a newer diner (i.e. not a classic built in the 50's, it has a certain retro charm. The waitresses are perky and upbeat. The place is always jam packed with folks who are looking for an inexpensive large meal. Every time my wife and I go, we end up bringing home half of what we order for lunch. Parking is ample, the place is large with room for about 100 people. Clean, well lit, and service is fast. Really one of the better diners in Central New York. She said she'd go clean up the booth next to us and be back! I ordered jambalaya. My friend got the Rueben. Food came out quickly and hot. Got my salad after my entree but whatevs. The Rueben was obviously good, as it disappeared in minutes. The jambalaya. My initial thought was "at a diner, for $15, how good can this be"? Simple. Chicken, sausage, shrimp, tomatoes, spices. Delicious! Someone in the kitchen knows how jambalaya is supposed to taste. Satisfying! I am a major fan of any type of diner. Friday morning around 9am is when we went to eat breakfast. You walk in and the hostess or whoever is around will tell you which direction there is an open table. Coffee is flowing nice & hot. Their lunch menu is much bigger than their breakfast menu but you still have a wide selection of morning foods to choose from. I went for a broccoli & mushroom omelet with homefries. My husband almost always gets a western omelet with wheat toast & homefries. So without fail that is what he opted for. They did ask me if I wanted onions in my homefries but they did not ask him. It is nice when they do ask this because not everyone is an onion fan. The size of their pancakes is bigger than your plate so I think I may have to try one of those giantic things sometime! Food came out quickly & piping hot. I don't like my food to come out warm, that means its been sitting for a few. Omlet's were huge & you do get a huge portion of homefries. Homefries don't come with the omelets so it is about $2.00 extra for them. Food was tasty & you could tell they use fresh broccoli & not frozen because it wasn't super soft in the omelet & that is what I like. I think for both of us we were able to eat for about $25 & both of us had leftovers. I wish it came with more than 2 pieces of toast though. I like when they come with 4. Almost standard at all diners you go up front to pay. By the time we were done there was a line of people waiting. This place is bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside. I dropped by this retro diner yesterday evening. I had the Chicken Riggies, a local favorite. It was ok and the chicken preparation was a little different. Instead of grilled chicken. They put breaded chicken in their riggies and added black olives. Overall my meal was good and the riggies came with a small salad. The service was what is expected for a diner. I stopped here for breakfast on a Monday morning and it was already packed! Luckily, my partner and I were able to grab a seat at the counter right away. We also didn't have to wait long to get our food. I ordered the sausage gravy over biscuits and my partner ordered the country benny. Both were delicious. The biscuits were kind of dense towards the bottom, but the gravy helped soften it. The gravy also had chunks of meat which was a plus. I also loved the home fries that our orders came with. Well seasoned, some potatoes were nicely crisped. Get it with onions. We ended up getting a to-go box because their portions are huge. Overall, just great comfort food. We sat at the bar so it was easy to see how quickly and efficiently they move. I ordered one of the specials at a great price that I know would be more else where. I do have to say our food took longer than the people next to us and they sat down after us. Big pet peeve, but the food was really good. The streets were pretty empty on the Sunday morning in Syracuse, but the parking lot at this place was rammed. Cars were even parked on the street. The line up went by fairly quickly; we waited just 10 minutes. The service was brisk and friendly. The Monte cristo sandwich was ham and cheese sandwiched in French toast.
