Steirereck is considered to be (together with Silvio Nickol's at Palais Coburg) the top Austrian restaurant with two Michelin stars. In addition to this restaurant, there is also a non-Michelin-star rated restaurant "Meierei" in the basement of the same building, with less elaborate offer. The restaurant only works during the weekdays, which might be a problem for the weekend turists.
The LOCATION of the restaurant is superb - in the middle of the Stadtpark - a city park, very near to the centre of the city. As regards parking, one can park either at the nearby Hilton or Intercontinental garage, but it is much easier to take a cab, since it can bring you direclty to the front of the restaurant.
The SERVICE is attentive and the staff is very friendly. However, some things are a bit sloppy: water / wine not poured soon enough, after glasses are empty; handkerchief removed after one leaves the table, but then the staff forgets to bring the new one; petits fours brought to the table after the invoice was already paid, etc. Nothing too problematic, but definitely not a 2-star service.
The FOOD is innovative, and based on Austrian culinaric tradition, but (as it quite often happens at restaurants of these levels) they just try too hard: too many ingredients, sauces etc. blurr the main tastes of the dishes. Therefore, even with high quality ingredients, one cannot really appreciate and find the fils rouge of the dish. A bit of a culinaric confusion. What needs to be really pointed out positively, are the amuse-bouches (a story related to the new mandatory allergens depiction in the EU), the bread tray (try the blood sausage bread - incredible), and the petits fours (typical Austrian grandmother-like desserts with an innovative twist). Last time, in February, we tried the 6-course degustation menu (still practically the same), and now we decided for a 3 course a la carte dinner. The pricing of both is almost the same, so a degustation menu is definitely advisable for the first visit. Generally, the pricing is too high taking into account the overall quality.
The WINE LIST is extensive, the sommelier professional, pricing correct.
All in all, the Steirereck is a top Viennese restaurant in otherwise quite limited top-end culinaric offer of Vienna. It is still a little away from the 2 star restaurants in France or Italy, but worth visiting. There is also a nice touch of cosiness: the orders and checks are collected by the lady of the couse, which is a very nice and agreeable lady. One would also appreciate it if the chef would come to briefly greet the guests as well. read more
