They aren't fancy schmancy but they are close to my favorite thing in the world. This shocked the hell out of me since I dislike cheesecake. Various fruit pastries: ohhhh mannnn, these aren't artful or picturesque, but they just melt in your mouth and you should DEFINITELY also get 50 of these. Petit Fours: soooo good! The vanilla ones are much better than the chocolate ones though. They are so sugary and moist and buttery and just perfect with NO yucky distracting raspberry filling like so many others always add! I don't even know what a cheese pocket is. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it was filled with cream, not savory cheese and topped with sweet frosting? Who invented this calorie-bomb?? Cheese "straws" are pretty fantastic, with a rich cheese flavor and a slight kick of heat. They have a light consistency and you can get a whole bag of 'em. I've been ordering petit fours from Stein's for years because they are the best tasting in town and reasonably priced. However, I do agree with other posts that customer service is an issue. Over the past 20 years, I have placed advanced orders and experienced: wrong orders locked doors until almost 8 a.m. (making us late to school) wrong date for my order (they made the cake a week earlier than requested and then got mad at me!) And NEVER an apology for the inconveniences these wrong orders caused. I realize the staff works very hard, plus the sweets are delicious, so I overlook the poor customer service. read more

While most of the time when an establishment has a smell that extends past its doors it's usually not a good thing (ie the smell is more like a rotten stench), Stein's makes the whole shopping center smell like baked goods heaven. The atmosphere is admittedly unassuming -- I don't think they've renovated much since they opened in like the 1940s -- but don't like appearances scare you off. These people KNOW how to bake. Look no further than Stein's for all your cake and petit four needs (and what red blooded American doesn't NEED a petit four now and then, really?). I do agree with the people who say the vanilla ones are way better and also that the cookies are kind of dry (but cookies are for amateurs anyway). My personal favorite would be for yellow cake with chocolate icing, but really you can't go wrong with any of the flavors. This probably goes without saying, but they use the legit sugary good icing aka not the whipped creamy crap that you will find in the bakery section of a grocery store. Stein's also has an expansive catalog of cake decoration offerings to make for a true edible masterpiece. One time, my dad did get his cake with Happy Birthday Mick written on it (his name is Mike ... we're not in the UK here), but since he was the only one eating it (the fat kid apple clearly didn't fall far from the tree) it ended up not mattering and even better we got an extra free cake! Kudos to Stein's for being so helpful after the mishap. Probably best for my waistline's sake that I no longer live in Dallas to enjoy Stein's more often, but I would be remiss not to spread the good word about them to yelp readers in the Metroplex. My coworker go here to pick up evening yummies after lunch. It is at a convenient location - major intersection of Preston and 635. It allows for a quick in and out with plenty of parking. Their cookie selections is grand and their prices are quite inexpensive. I have never ordered a cake but the ones they have on display are always looking very tempting. They even have a "clearance" selection of pastries and treats that always grab my attention. The staff is friendly and always willing to offer suggestions. read more

Stein's makes the BEST white cake I have ever tasted, hands down. I have been known to go there on Saturday and get a white 3 layer round cake ( complete with icing rose on top) just to have to eat of for myself. Yeah, I said it. I don't eat the WHOLE cake at once because it is way too fattening but I will get a huge slice, complete with cup of milk and then wrap the rest and freeze it. By order of my boss I have to go here. Orders are never on time and the petit fours are very inconsistent and not always covered evenly, they vary in size too. Our custom lettering is sometimes done in the wrong color. There is a small chance they come out right but when they do it is worth it...I just wouldn't want to take that chance. read more

I had never had a professional cake made for my children's birthdays. I will never be baking my own cakes again! Not only was the cake absolutely stunning and perfect for her mermaid themed party, it was delicious and we received so many compliments. I tasted their butter cream frosting and it was tooooo sweet for our taste. In a bind (with only 3 days till the party) and with my nephew's suggestion I ordered white cake, cream cheese frosting with strawberry filling. If you want a home-made (made from scratch) two layer Red Velvet, well my friend, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the likes of this place. Based on the reviews and their profile picture here on Yelp and after calling 6 (Yes, six!) different places on such short notice my dad & I order a cake from Stein's Bakery to surprised mom. Well presented dense cake with rich icing that they had in stock and ready to go last minute! We made it our own by topping it with decorative flowers and lettering. I wasn't expecting it to look like the profile pic but that was just fine with me cause the taste alone will makes me want to come back to get another one for my birthday next month. I only come here for the cheese pockets and petit fours. If I had to solely rank Stein's just on their cheese pockets and petit fours, it would be five stars. The reason why this isn't a five star review is because I'm a cake snob and although I'm sure their cakes are good, I wasn't too impressed with the taste of their cupcakes they had on hand, so I figured the taste of the cupcake would be similar to their cake. I purchased some chocolate cupcakes and though they did look like chocolate cupcakes, they oddly did not taste like chocolate at all. Hard to explain but it was a chalky taste, and they were dry. I would like to think this place is much like Czech Stop of West, Texas. I ordered 3 cheese pockets, an apricot danish, a petit four, and a bag of cheese straws [w/ bacon]. My total was only ~$7.26! The cheese pockets were like, a dollar! Unfortunately, I only tried the cheese pockets and the cheese straws, and the rest were for my boyfriend... so maybe he'll do a review over that later, but he did tell me the petit four and the danish was good! The cheese pockets were amazzingggg! I could only eat half of it at a time because it was so rich, but I made sure to finish it within an hr or 2 because I kept wanting to go back for another bite! The cheese straws weren't worth it. Everyone else that tried it didn't like it either. It was too plain and salty for my taste. Nothing special. So it was no exageration. The Cheese Pockets were absolutely delectable! And so were the Eclairs... and the Turnovers (especialy apple - FILLED to the brim). Cookies were fresh, but the flaky dough of the Cheese Pockets & the Pecan Sticky Buns made me apreciate a true BAKERY! The sweet, genuine kindness of all of the staff made me want to come back weekly. Encouraged me to try new stuff & brought out more & MORE samples to convince me (which was not hard). Well this place doesn't have the greatest baked goods but I thought it was ok. I'm trying to watch what I eat and this wasn't a good choice to go to. Their cookies looked alright like there wasn't much effort in making them. Too much butter as well. What caught my eye was the Mexican wedding cookies. They were about $2 for half a doz and a doz would be around $4. I got half a doz just to try them out and they were decent nothing too fancy. There was a topper that is number 1 and they SAID they could make the cake exactly as same as the cake on the picture that I sent them. When my husband picked up the cake, I was in rush getting ready for her birthday party in a restaurant, he called me in an urgent voice and told me that they made a topper NUMBER 2!! i've come to Steins for decades, i live very close by. in last several years, their consistency has declined. Sometimes you get good fresh cupcakes, pastries, and baked goods, but not always. My last two times I've asked if the items were made today. I've been told "yes" only to taste when i get home and they are totally dried out and obviously old. That's why I'd learned to ask when made. We Pre-Ordered and Pre-Paid for a white birthday cake with butter creme frosting and Strawberry filling for one of our employees. I picked it up the night before the office party. Next day at lunch, we sang happy b-day and cut the cake. Too our immediate surprise, the cake was as salty as fried chicken. There wasn't enough frosting to even balance it out it was so salty. No one ate their cake. The first words were, "where did you get that?". I called the bakery manager the same day. He apologized and said he would refund my money to my card by the following Monday. He never did. He also wanted me to drive the cake back to Steins Bakery so he could taste it. Reasonable request I suppose, However, Steins is in North Dallas and I live in South Arlington. Not worth my effort just so he could verify my claim. $66 cake-o-salt. Not a mistake that should ever even happen. They make 100 lbs of batter per batch, so I wasn't the only one who got cake-o-salt and ruined our celebration. 15 people in the office swore they would never go there. I wish I could give 5 negative stars for a manager who's word is absolutely worthless! Steins was recommended to me about 10 years ago and I never forgot. I thought this was going to be a real treat for our staff. Instead, they will tell all their friends about Steins Cake-o-salt. Gross!!! I think at one time this was probably a really great place to buy. Apparently, not any more. Go there at your own peril. In fact, you can order a layer cake from Walmart that is way better tasting for $40. And if they screw up, they will actually give your money back. Not tell you they will and then do not. read more
