I have had donuts from Stein's bakery since I was a little girl. I do not live in Dallas any more, but visit family and LOVE to have Stein's. All of my family LOVES (and loved) the Cheese Pockets. I was into the cherry danish. My Mom would get those and cakes, etc. for every holiday through the 60's, 70's, and 80's! But when I visited her after that, we ALWAYS made our way to Stein's. I purchased a sheet cake and paid over $50 for it. The cake was dry! Absolutely not worth the money! Did I mention I drove 30 miles because I always thought Stein's Bakery was incredible.....Too bad it wasn't! The cream cheese pocket was amazing! One of my favorite pastries is a cheese Danish but the cream cheese pocket is a denser bread with the flavoring in the bread-middle of the pastry. All the pastries/cookies we tried were fantastically delicious, if smaller than your average bakery sized cookies. First and last time customer. When I walked in the door, it didn't smell like a bakery. Should have turned around and left at that point. The store has an old, musty smell which unfortunately has made its way into the cookies. Some of the cookies seemed fresh but others were stale. Didn't try the pastries but they were not even visually appealing. Some of the decorations on the cookies didn't look very professional. This place isn't worth the money. If you want cupcakes go to GiGi's and Tiff's for cookies. read more

Over the years I have frequent Stein's Bakery mainly for their cheese pockets . Plus they made my wedding cake from 1994 and did a wonderful job. But yesterday (Wednesday 2/4/26) drove from south of Fort Worth area to get a treasured cheese pocket. I purchased 8 to share with family. I was disappointed they seemed stale , not fresh. Stein's seems to have gone downhill recently, which makes me very sad. The pastries and cakes are still yummy. However, the attention to detail is completely lacking, which results in inconsistent quality. I recently stopped in and picked up a box of petit fours. ALL OF THEM were lacking icing on multiple sides because the wrapper had stuck to the sides of the cake, and then the icing hadn't reached the sides. See photo. I buy these for the fantastic icing-to-cake ratio. What's the point of buying basically the tiniest imaginable piece of cake that only has icing on the top?? I'll be honest, I only had the petit fours. We used to get our petit fours from another bakery before they closed down. This was my first time trying this bakery and as of right now they are the best petit fours Ive tried in DFW. I placed an order for the petit fours over the phone and it was a easy pick up. Plenty of parking near by and the building felt big for a bakery. I will for sure be back for the petit fours. Love this place! Easy to find, close to Preston and 635 & lots of parking. Everyone who works here is super nice and friendly and always seem to be glad you came. It was early afternoon and I was afraid they'd be sold out of the cream cheese pastries I love(has happened in the past) but they had a tray full, got a few other items. I was in the area and saw a bakery and I love a good bakery so I stopped in. Walked in and it appears that this is an old bakery and they do things that my grandmother would have liked. Tea cookies, almond cookies, pastries, bread and cakes. The lady who "greeted" me made me feel like I was bothersome as I asked a lot of questions but I went with what she said was most popular, a cream cheese filled pastry, and a pastry that had nuts & honey in the center. The two cost less than $4. Got to where I was going and had some extra time so I started eating the cream cheese pastry. I was surprised because when I bit into it, i didn't see anything inside of it. However after the second bite I was like wait a minute, this is good. By the time I finished it I was wanting another. However I looked at the other pastry and prayed it would be just as good. It wasn't. The pastry was hard, the inner was overly sweet where I ended up throwing it away. However i did go back and buy two more of the cheesecake pastry to share with my family ($5.50). I can't say I would drive to north dallas just for the pastry but if I was in the area I would stop in again. read more

This is one if not the best bakery in Dallas.After reading all these negative reviews I was a little worried about the service and quality of the place,but after actually going I was treated with no less than respect and everything was fresh and delicious.The was nice tunes playing in the background and everyone was being helped one by one.It looked like the place was packed but it flew by so fast and I was not in line for more than 2 minutes. Plus, staff is very easy to work with in terms of custom designs, and despite inflation on ingredients they remain very affordable compared to other bakery shops. I was super excited to order a cake from here. The ones online looked beautiful. I brought in a picture of the cake I wanted and they said they could duplicate it. When I came to pick up the cake the lettering was off center. They had also left off some wording. This was extremely irritating because I emailed them the exact picture of the cake I wanted done. There wasn't a lot of detailing so It was a pain that the main details (wording) were screwed up. It appears as if they aren't good at paying attention to detail. However, they were able to make changes on the spot, which I was incredibly grateful for. And to make matters even better, the cake was wonderful. Absolutely horrible. I have been going to Steins for years and I will not go back. The petit fours were so stale my granddaughter's would not eat them. After hearing people rave about Stein's I finally stopped in to give them a try. What a disappointment. The seasonal cookies looked like they were decorated by an elementary school art class. When we asked if they had any vegan options, the answer was a dismissive "No!" As in, why would you even ask such a ridiculous question? As we continued to browse, another customer was there picking up a cake they had ordered. Apparently it was incorrect but rather than apologize and work to fix it, the employee said, "I don't decorate the cakes, I just work the counter, that's somebody else." Excuse me?? I've been a Steins customer for 40 years and while I've recommended them to friends and colleagues over the years; I may have to re-think that. I ordered a 7" white cake with purple roses and was quoted $40 including extra roses. When I picked up the cake, there were 3 roses. That to me, does not seem like extra roses, so I asked them to do the extra roses (while I waited). When I checked out, I was charged $45 dollars by John. So I basically paid another up-charge on top of what I was already quoted. This place needs to re-think their customer service BIG TIME! For a while, the ambiance was very negative but I kept coming because of the quality of the baked goods. There are several nice girls working there, but the overall attitude is still negative as evidenced by my latest interaction. I ordered a cake to celebrate a love ones 50th birthday. I specifically requested a two tier 50 number cake, jelly in-between the layers, colors to be red, black and gold with flower decor and cream cheese icing. When I gone to pick it up, I got a sheet cake, white color butter cream icing with gold lettering saying "Happy Birthday". I was so upset but I was running out of time since the party was in east Texas. The nice young lady who checked me out said if I came back at 3 pm, they can have the cake I ordered ready. There was no way since the gathering started at 1 pm. No one knew the design I requested besides the birthday girl, however, the nail to the coffin is when people took their first bite to discover the cake was dry. I was embarrassed when I saw the look and reaction. So NOTHING I requested and ordered was made and the worst part was the cake was dry. I will never order from here again. read more

I am HORRIFIED at how bad the customer service was in the process of getting a custom birthday cake for my daughter. I originally called the bakery to ask about the process of ordering. The lady I spoke to was clearly not happy to be at work and was minimally helpful. She directed me to start the process through email. So I did. It took days to hear back and when I responded with follow-up questions, I did not get a response. Ever. I even sent two check-in emails. No response. I should have just given up and gone with another bakery but my family has been going to Stein's for petit fours since I was a kid, so I wanted to try a cake for my own kid. Anyway, I called the bakery again and spoke to another unhappy woman. She put me on hold and then hung up on me. I called back, only getting dial tones two times. Finally, a man answered and told me "call back tomorrow morning, all the cake ladies left." I called back the next morning and this time spoke with someone kinder and more helpful. I placed the order, originally noting that I would pick up at 4pm on a Friday afternoon. Once the week came, I called to check in on the Tuesday before pickup and to change the pickup time to lunch time between 12 and 1. I asked the lady who I spoke to what I needed to do, and she said she was writing it on my ticket as we spoke and that it wouldn't be an issue. Well, today is Friday, my husband went to get the cake during lunch and it wasn't ready. I called and talked to them myself, explaining the story and my husband said one lady was literally mocking me in front of him and complaining about the issue. This is so unprofessional. After I spoke to two different women, they told my husband the best they could do was for him to wait around for 45 minutes. We live far away, and so he did. No discount was offered. No apology. No kindness. So rude and so unprofessional. The mistake was on their end and no one is owning up to it. The cake did turn out absolutely beautifully and I am sure it will be delicious - hoping those things end up making this worth the headache that it's been. I feel a little conflicted as I write this review because I feel like my family will always return to Stein's - even if just for the nostalgic petit fours. Our experience this time with the horrendous customer service is just so disheartening and if it had been our first experience, we truly would never walk through the doors again. My hope is that someone in charge sees this and it somehow makes a difference moving forward in how customers are treated. read more
