This was the first bar I went to after coming to Oxford, based on a few Yelp reviews. "Marxist graduate student hangout" seemed like a good recommendation, and I had heard of this German"ish" restaurant from others during my first visit. However, I wouldn't really call it a "bar", as most of the space is dedicated to restaurant tables. They do have a great German/import beer selection, with many on tap. However, not much for atmosphere with the large TV behind a relatively small bar. Bartenders vary from disinterested and novice to quite entertaining. The food smells are not the most pleasant, but I haven't had the food so can't really comment. read more

College is the best 4 years of your ilfe. Really? Yes, REALLY. I have so many wonderful memories of spending Thursday nights at Steinkeller with my friends senior year. It's the perfect place to just chill out and grab a drink! The atmosphere is great and the large, wooden booths offer just enough privacy, but you can enjoy the live music (when they have it) as well! Sure, it can get loud, but we're all used to losing our voices anyway. Definitely try the beers as some of them you can't get anywhere else in the US! I never used to be a fan of beer until I started coming to Steinkeller. There's really something for everyone! And don't forget to order the pretezel with beer cheese!!! You won't regret it. I got in to Steinkeller at long last during Miami's alumni weekend. I rolled in there with several co-workers/friends at about 11:30pm or so. It wasn't too crowded (but certainly not empty). They serve beer by the liter here, which makes good sense being that it's a college town. College kids like to drink beer. So do me and my co-worker/friends - all in our 30's and 40's.... I had a liter of Bitburger, a classic German beer (in my opinion anyway). It was quite good and didn't really get cold despite the huge glass it came in (part of the fun is hefting those big glasses). We shared some gigantic pretzels as well, which were delicious. They give you a few different sauces for dipping, too, which were also tasty. The location is a little hard to find. Not really, it's just down some stairs and has a fairly unobtrusive sign. You can walk right past the doorway and not even realize it. Everyone likes Steinkeller and I can easily see why. I'll be back. read more

Great German food. The prices are on the higher side. But when you walk in you instantly feel the German feel as if you were in Germany eating. 20 beers on tap (18 of them imported) and the pleasure of drinking them in 4 sizes: 1 - A sampler platter consisting of 5 beers (either light, dark, or wheat); 2 - A manageable 1/2 liter (little more than a pint); 3: The famed liter [mistakenly called a stein (5 liters), should actually be referred to as a krug]; 4 - DAS BOOT! A 2 liter miracle and you get to keep the glass at the end!. There is a pretty quiet and relaxed atmosphere, they have a fairly strict 21 and up policy cutting out some whiles of crazy found in underage drinkers; though it is a drinkers bar. Don't expect dancing and loud club music, unless you want to drive people mad by loading up the jukebox. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable and will definitely find you a drink if you can't make up your mind. About 2 years ago they got a new head chef, and while their famed seasoned frys are gone, the menu has improved dramatically. I can't think of a single thing on the menu I wouldn't recommend. Overall, Stein's is a great place for a nicer meal, good drinks and a relaxed atmosphere. read more

Went to Hueston Woods recently for a little getaway & drove over to Oxford for lunch. Yelp led us to Steinkeller & we are glad we went! We headed over ona Saturday morning which offers brunch until 3. You walk downstairs to a lower level restaurant that has quite a bit of character! They have an extensive German Bier list, wine, and some creative Brunch Drinks. The menu is full of old favorite brunch items with a twist. A pork belly/goetta eggs benny, biscuits & bratwurst gravy & bourbon bacon chicken & waffles. The menu is impressive! We ordered some burrs as well as the Bavarian Mimosa which was ridiculously refreshing!! I also ordered a pretzel ($7) which was massive! It comes along with mustard & Bier cheese. I shared this with three others & they raved about it as much as I did! I also tried a half order biscuit & gravy which is $5. The biscuit is crunchy on the outside & buttery soft on the inside. Break it up and thrown the bratwurst gravy on top & you have a serious winner! I also must mention the Hangover Fries aka heart attack on a plate. Imagine a bottom layer of fries, thrown on some bratwurst gravy, cheddar cheese & finish with a fried egg. This dish put a smile on a lot of faces at our table & entered them into the gluttony hall of fame! This place had lots of character, great Bier & tasty, unique food. It's a winner. read more

I visited Steinkeller a few months ago with my wife while visiting Oxford. What a delightful place! I would love to have a place like this nearby, but alas, it is in Oxford. I got one of those giant steins of beer, and I think I had one of the Oktoberfests. I also had an assortment of brats and some kind of app like fries or something, and it was all really good. This is an awesome place to go and chill out or get a big meal in groups big or small or even alone. I mean there are few configurations in which I feel one could go to Steinkeller and not have a good time. read more

Wonderful place for imported beers on draft, and an OK place to get food. The servers are usually overwhelmed and too busy to give you attentive service, thus you should expect a messed up meal. But again, best place to drink with a group of friends. The food itself is pretty good, I would actually rank it much higher than Hofbräuhaus Newport. I like the ease of being able to slip into Circle Bar if I want. And you can order food from Steinkeller, and Mac and Joes, to eat inside Circle. read more

Food is fine. Service however, absolutely horrifying. We were told for over 2 hours that it would be "another 20 minutes". Finally got a table and they took an actual 20 just to bring us water and pour our glasses of wine. Have never been treated so poorly by an establishment that I was so looking forward to attending. I am so happy we found this unique place in the basement! I was a little skeptical of going down into a basement to eat but was pleasantly surprised. Freshman and Sophomore year when my family came to visit we always noticed the signs for Steins but kind of just passed on by. Finally after having been to Germany and loving it we decided to stop and try it. Now it's practically the only place we go whenever we're all in town. The food is wonderful, they have a really cool atmosphere, and let's not forget the steins of beer! It might be a bit unfortunate for those that have difficulty using stairs or for those that are tied to their mobile devices, but Verizon tends to get reception, and besides, we go to have a fun and talk, not to be texting and all that. A small white folding sign with specials chalked on sits to the left of the Great Steak and Potato company beckoning downwards, down the steps in to the darkness... One of Oxford's better 21 and up bars past dinner time, Steinkeller was always my group of friend's favorite spots. Pretzels with beer cheese are the perfect accompaniment to pints and pints of beer (technically a stein is a ceramic cup), but their pints are the huge glass HoffBrau style. They carry a good amount of German imports on tap my favorites being Erdinger, Franziskaner and the not-for-the-faint-of-heart Spaten Optimator which is a refreshingly clean dark beer in taste but a German boot in the ass as far as alcohol percentage. Only had a few bad experiences in the long time I have been visiting, including one time where someone came around to collect cover when they started to do so even though I had been there for hours! This downstairs bar is as said below, cozy. The wooden booths are perfect for cramming your friends in, toasting and discussing life late in to the night, even when it gets louder later on. Less dancing and more beer. When it comes to Oxford it's here then nearby CJs and Mac n Joes for more late night antics. read more

2 words Saurekraut Balls! Must stop if in the area! The atmosphere is awesome! You go down stairs to the underground restaurant which because it's different, is so cool. The furnishings and decor gives you the sense of being in another place. The staff was great. Very friendly, helpful and all pleasant. They have a lot of German beer options. I'm not much of a beer person so I can't help you there. I was a bit bummed not to see any specialty beverages, but it's a German restaurant, they have beer. Haha There was a few of us, so don't think I ate the following things ask myself. Potato pancakes, delicious. The side of applesauce is different and so good combined. Hungover fries, (insert photo of a drooling Homer Simpson here) best fry appetizer I have ever had. The saurekraut balls are the best thing I have had in so long. There are a lot of flavors packed up in the balls but not like an over powering amount, it's a good perfect mixture. The kind of thing that you literally close your eyes and enjoy. Went to Oxford Ohio on kind of a whim and had looked at the various restaurants in the Miami University college town. Of course it might have not been too wise to visit a college town on a Saturday evening after a big football game but that is another story. Went to Steinkeller for something different. Steinkeller is a German restaurant that features German beer and German fare. The restaurant - bar is actually in a basement down two flights of stairs. I didn't look for nor see any handicap elevator to get down and back up to street level. As was noted above going to a college town on a Saturday evening might not have been a great idea if one is looking for a quick meal. Our party of three was too small to get one of the larger tables in the middle of the L shaped restaurant and all of the booths on the side of the place were full. We were directed to the bar which is not large with too few stools for a larger crowd. The decor is German themed with real wood booths and tables. We were almost ready to leave when our booth came open. The people at the entrance assigning tables/booths seemed to not be the most happy workers in the world. The server was excellent though. He went through the various beers and we had two dark brews which we can't remember the names mainly because we told him to surprise us within the dark beer category. Mine had a slight chocolate/coffee taste but was very good. The other beer was also rated as very good. We had a reuben, a pork belly reuben and keller salad. The reuben was rated as possibly the best she had ever had. The corned beef was tender with no hint of gristle one typically gets with most corned beef. The toppings on it were a perfect fit for this sandwich. I had the pork belly reuben which features a wonderful red cabbage slaw along with pork slices and Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing. It was different from a typical reuben but this variation had the perfect match of ingredients. Both reubens were meal sized and come with chips. The Keller salad filled a whole plate Three meals with drinks came to $45.00 which isn't bad. The keller salad was also rated as very good. By the time we left the place was packed with students, alumni and others. Would recommend Steinkeller for a good German meal. read more

After living and dining/drinking in the Oxford area for four consecutive years, I can confidently say that Steinkeller is without a doubt the best restaurant in town. A hidden restaurant, tucked quietly underneath Oxford's Uptown, this place is so unique that it draws large crowds of all ages and backgrounds. It's a German theme, and, as a German student, sticks to authentic German meals and, more importantly, German beers. The beer is worthy of a lengthy review in itself. Although, there are no words to describe their imports. They are delicious and also a good idea. You have to try one for yourself to understand. The food is excellent. If it seems a bit pricey, go on weeknights when they have daily specials and you can easily save a bunch of money. It's well worth the price. If you visit one restaurant in Oxford, make it Steinkeller; you won't regret it. read more

This is more of a 3 1/2 star review, but Yelp doesn't have that option ;-) They are getting the fourth star because they had a bartender who would send the waiter back to ask for drink specifications on cocktails, and the cocktails were good. First time there and the food was Ok, but with only two people it was a small sample size. The waiter failed to mention that the creme brulee was chocolate, and about half of the top was burned black instead of caramelized. read more

Kolsch Beer in Oxford OH!!! And in a full stein for 8bucks. This is the real beer from Koln. The booths are the worst ever. Dismantle please. The tables are fine and a few TV's allow for distraction. The basement cellar style bar is more akin to Czech than Germany but it does help authenticity. The food was good with the pretzel and not as good with the schnitzel. Came to Oxford to take our grandson, who is a senior at Miami, to dinner. He wanted to go to Steinkeller. I wanted a ribeye but they were out of all steaks but NY strips so that's what I ordered. It was the worst steak I've ever had-- full of gristle. Also no baked potatoes. No bread came with meal. I complained about the steak. The waitress agreed that it was bad. I recently enjoyed an amazing meal here with my family. Our waitress, Katie, did a fabulous job at explaining the menu and offering her recommendations. This place is awesome! Went there with my wife and daughter. Sunday brunch menu has a lot of variety. Potato pancakes, huge homemade pretzel, schnitzel and brie burger were excellent!
