The employee at the front counter, who appears to be new, simply stated, "Sorry, we don't have your items today. You'll have to come back Monday." There was no acknowledgment of the inconvenience of making a trip on the scheduled date, nor any effort to offer a reasonable accommodation. When I expressed concern, the situation became more disappointing. Instead of taking responsibility for missing the promised date, the employee turned the issue around and said, "You've been coming here for years--when have we ever made a mistake for you?" It felt as though he was using my long-standing loyalty as a way to dismiss the current mistake, rather than valuing it. Being a long-term customer should not be used against someone to minimize a legitimate concern. If anything, it should warrant greater care and professionalism. Mistakes can happen in any business. However, how those mistakes are handled is what defines customer service.
