They were having a difficult day, with only two servers in the restaurant, and the milkshake machine was broke. However they ended up giving us our milkshakes for free because we were waiting in the drive-through line when a lady got out of her car behind me and came up to the speaker and hollered in if anybody was there. When I explained to her what was going on, she went back into her car and left. They appreciated my sticking up for them, which is why they gave my milkshakes for free. Went through the drive-through , after waiting for 20 minutes for the car that was in front of me, I was handed my drinks in my food, the Coke was pure water obviously there's no syrup in it, so I get out of my car and I go inside the restaurant and told them their coke machine is out and I need two new cokes, quite sure it was the manager that helped me, she never apologized. Didn't even say hello. Just basically threw the two cokes at me and I walked away. Terrible service would not recommend.! I know they had to know that when they handed me those two cokes to the drive-through that they were totally watered down, but they figured oh she won't notice till she gets home. I got a 3 piece chicken tenders and the chicken tenders were terribly dry. Then I got a M&M shake thinking it would make up for my dry fries and chicken tenders. I open it and all I see is M&M bits. They didn't even mix it. There is no human communication here it is all on kiosks that are really slow and are usually wrong. The bathrooms are not the best and it is terribly dirty anywhere you sit and the air vents were rusty and have not been cleaned for 5 years minimum. When I found a seat I am pretty sure I sat on someone else's food crumbs. They were quicker then usually today which was a plus but I want my 6 dollars back for that M&M shake I didn't even get 50% of the way of because it would have given me a heart attack. read more

Stopped for lunch today and I didn't select that I wanted lettuce so I asked to have lettuce added to my sandwich and I would assume that she is the manager and I saw her roll her eyes as she walked away. She did inform me that if I want lettuce then I just need to select it which I thought I did but will look more carefully next time.. Not sure what happened to the Manager that was there awhile ago but he seemed to go above and beyond to insure we always had what we needed. read more

6/26/25 i had just gotten off work at 9:30pm and wanted some steak and shake since i hadn't ate all night, i pulled up to the drive thru at 9:35pm, i was the second person to wait to order. granted i knew they closed at 10pm i knew was pushing it. there was 3 cars already cashed out waiting for food. the car in front of me was still waiting to order, its almost 9:50 now , they take his order , and now i pull up to to order. lady at drive thru says she can't take my order the drive thru closes at 9:50. i said even if ive been waiting way before 9:50? she said yes. so she was probably waiting until 9:50 to take the guy in front of me just to tell me i cant order.. every place ive been to its whoever was in line before they closed .. probably wont be coming back. read more

No human contact, long wait time, unclean environment. Dirty tables and bathrooms, trash overflowing. Normally if I have a bad experience I just don't review it. But I felt like I had to in this case. As soon as you walk in you see a sign that says you must order from the kiosk. (Which, btw, is not very responsive to your touch). When your order is ready, they call your name and you pick it up at a station. By the time you get there the person who called your name is back in the kitchen. There is no option to speak to a person for any reason. So when my order was incorrect, I literally had to go back to where they were cooking and called out to someone, as I saw a few other people do. I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do it like that. On the bright side, when I finally caught someone's attention, they were nice to me, and refunded me the money I paid for the items I did not receive. I expected them to just tell me I needed to get out of the kitchen LOL, so that was a pleasant surprise. It's also definitely not the same steak and shake Burger I used to get which, I get it, what is? But I felt like I was eating a White Castle patty on a full size bun LOL . Better get a double or triple or more if you want a normal size hamburger. Anyway overall, the worst part is having no option for human interaction. That would have solved pretty much every issue I had. I'm not the kind of person that needs "people help" all the time, but there needs to be some recourse. As difficult as it was for me, who is used to ordering from kiosks, some people would not be able to use it at all. I guess those people don't get to dine in, they would need to order from the drive-through, or better yet, maybe go instead to the Skyline Chili right behind this Steak and Shake. When I was in HS I went to this Steak 'n Shake like weekly. I would order the Frisco melt and a random milk shake. I always got cheese with my fries and it was the BEST. I decided to take my kids through while we were waiting for our groceries and man would I have been better off feeding them stuff from the check out lane in Staples. 1. My frisco was tasteless and whimpy and wet. 2. My fries were raw. 3. They forgot my cheese sauce but no worries, they didn't forget to charge me for it. 4. The kids meals were a joke. I'm with the boomers on this one. Just let me complain real quick, ok? Stopped by a Steak and Shake for the first time in forever, it sounded so good. This one specifically is in Troy, Ohio. There are ONLY kiosks to place your order, for dine-in AND take out. Okay, fine. 1.) The kiosks barely worked and took FOREVER to place a basic ass order and I couldn't even customize my burger to add ketchup or anything. 2.) They have signs up saying that shakes aren't available at all, and these signs look OLD. Uhh it's literally called "Steak and Shake". Why the hell else did I come here if not for a milkshake? 3.) At the end of my transaction, it asked for a tip. girl...there was 0 human interaction. We sat ourselves, ordered and picked up our food, got our own drinks, etc. 4.) In order to even get your drink, you have to scan a damn QR code to "unlock" the fountain soda machine. I had to talk approximately 4 elderly people through the process, and tbh I barely understood it myself. 5.) The booths were all super dirty. 6.) The bathrooms were ATROCIOUS. 7.) It was $30 for 2 medium adult burger meals and 1 kids meal....and I still can't believe the kiosk asked for a tip. read more

We were traveling through, and get off the interstate for a meal. I'd never eaten at a Steak 'n Shake, so opted for it. Poor choice. It was FOREVER from our order to getting it. There were three of us in the restaurant. It seems they were working on the orders simultaneously. First, one person would get part of their order, then another person. When all was said and done, it took 30 minutes from order to getting our food. We had to remind them about the shakes. Considering they advertised their shakes as something special, I wasn't impressed. Basic, boring chocolate shake. Thinner than I would have liked. The fries were skinny, tough, and barely warm. The hamburger part of the burger was okay. We could see the burgers cooked and setting on the grill a good 5-10 minutes. They were still warm when we received them, but the bun was cold. Someone needs to train those workers how to complete an order. At the simplest, complete one order before you do another. Another suggestion is having the guy on the grill do more than grill. Like maybe put the sandwich together instead of standing around waiting for, I don't know what. There appeared to be only three employees. When we questioned them about our order, they gave the excuse that they were busy with pick-up orders. None of the three of us, waiting inside, had seen any cars at the drive-though. If your dining room is not open - please put sign on doors big enough and dark enough for people to read from car. If I could give this establishment 0 stars, I would. We just stopped by for a late evening bite and milkshake. We were immediately informed that there were only two waiters on staff tonight. Okay, we expected a longer wait, etc, we are reasonable people. The food came out in a timely manner, very cold. We were given no eating utensils, the ketchup bottle was empty, and the burgers came with none of the requested condiments. We applied our requested mayonnaise to our burger with a French fry. The milkshake that was ordered never came, even after a reminder. After taking a few bites of the food, we took our check to pay. We informed the ill-mannered manager checking us out that we never received the milkshake we were charged for. He said nothing, told us the total, and asked if we wanted to leave a tip. We clearly declined to leave anything and informed him that the service and food was absolutely terrible. He looked at us, rolled his eyes, and asked if we wanted the receipt. On our way out, we made sure to inform the waiting customers that the service this evening was beyond subpar and if they could find any place that was still open, they'd probably have better luck there. read more

We just left this steak 'n Shake after the worst experience I've had at a steak 'n Shake in over 40 years. We waited 20 minutes to be seated and then took another 35 minutes to receive our food. We ordered the macaroni and cheese for a granddaughter and what was served was only about a half cup of food. We asked for more but it was never received and so our granddaughter left the restaurant still hungry. Then when I checked out we were unable to use a coupon For a specialty milkshake because the young lady claimed that a Butterfinger milkshake is not a specialty milkshake. I just checked it is listed on their menu as a specially shake. In addition I just realized that the dollar off coupons for two separate burgers were not credited when we checked out. In summation we had a terrible dining experience inadequate food and were overcharged. Will never visit the Troy stake and shake again. read more

This was walking distance from Shell, which was our designated pick-up spot for an impromptu kitten adoption on Tuesday. I would probably never eat at Steak n Shake (sober) back at home but we were too hopped up on adrenaline from our impending craigslist exchange and road trip hunger to be picky. The Parmesan fries were delicious, satisfying and SO RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP- $0.50 to add a medium fry to an order. Our hot dogs were gross and all the toppings were at the bottom of the bag but I'm not sure what we expected there. The cherry limeade was a saccharine disaster and therefore pretty yummy if you're a soda drinker. The workers were total sweeties, much more attentive than I'd expect at a fast food place. Bathrooms were decently clean. I'll always remember this Steak n Shake fondly because we received our most precious lil fur baby right next to it. read more

I am generally a very patient person, and I am aware that the food ordered here is made to order, which is one of the reasons I am willing to drive 30 minutes to pick up dinner when a craving hits. But we had a horrible experience today at the drive through. There was a line of maybe 5-6 cars ahead of us to the ordering menu. We sat patiently for about 30 minutes to finally get to the front of the line. We were asked to hold for a minute and look over the menu. We knew what we wanted, but still waited close to 15 minutes for them to respond. At which point I asked if they were ready to take our order, and we were asked to be patient, an employee had been injured and they were trying to ensure they were alright before taking more orders. 15 more minutes pass, and an employee walks out holding an ice pack on their elbow and smokes a cigarette. 10 minutes later they go back inside and still we've not been able to order. About 10 minutes later they apologize and ask for our order. We place it. 5 minutes later they ask for our order again. We give it, then they come out asking if we can hear them over the speaker. We say yes, but apparently you can't hear us. They go back inside and try again, still no sound on their end. 10 more minutes pass and they've come out and shaken the voice stand and go back inside. Now at this point it would have made sense for them to send someone out to take an order at our car, but they remain silent. We decided to park and go inside and place the order since my girlfriend really wanted steak and shake. So inside, we are informed they are not accepting orders at the walk in, and we need to go to the drive thru. We told them we've been at the mic for 45 minutes and its not working, and they amazingly have just gotten it to work. I was not going back into line for another hour so I went to the car, they did apparently agree to take my girlfriends order at the counter. Then they walked back into the kitchen and didn't come out for close to 10 minutes and she walked out without ordering. Again, I am patient, but we were there for over an hour and a half and never even got to place an order, and were met with nothing but contempt and rudeness when we spoke to them at the counter. Call me biased, but I prefer In and Out Burger over Steak and Shake. You probably should factor in that I ate the burger 20 minutes after I got it at the drive through, so it might have lost some of the wow value on the trip home. I had a double with cheese and a Butterfinger shake. Both were good, but I feel like it wasn't great. I'll be sure to eat it right when I get it next time and I will update my review then. read more

Looking through the order we found it missing two items and found two items made wrong. I understand that mistakes happen, but all those mistakes in an order we had to wait in line for over an hour for, I'll not go back there again. read more

This has to be the WORST place to eat. I ordered a taco salad after about 25 minutes it showed up with what looked like the left over scarps on the grill! No kidding!!! I was so hungry I started eating it just to find the hull of a head of lettuce! To be sure I let the manager know how dirty her place was and about the food, she could care less!
