I wasn't eating. I was just here with my fiancé. There was a please wait to be seated sign, but no one seating, so I ordered at the bar. After paying, I was sat at a dirty table with ketchup all over it still. We weren't given any napkins or silverware either. Way to many people getting paid to stand around and do nothing at this location. Someone is losing money and with good reason with this pathetic service. Keep up that 1 star rating. read more

I went through the drive-through today. Ordered two single steak burger with everything. When I got to my destination, I had two hamburgers with cheese only, pretty dry. I called the Springfield store and The person who answered said they would get the manager. I was on hold for quite some time in the Manitu never answered. I called back and no one answered. This is very poor service after having waited so long in the drive-through line. read more

This place is a train wreck. Arrived around 4:45, ordered, and received drinks promptly. It was only after 55 minutes and a trip to the counter to speak to the manager that we actually received our food, which was not as ordered. We were with another couple or I would have left after 20 minutes of poor service and no sign of food. The worst Steak n Shake around! I ate here a long time ago and it was OK then nothing great. I stopped in really late one night and it was pretty dead but yet there where pills of trash on the floor one right next to our table. The trash was there the whole time we where there I almost cleaned it up myself. I recommend the shakes to go and get the hell out of there. The rest of the food is gross. read more

This is the last time I come in this place. Seven minutes we sat there waiting for someone to take our order. There were eight tables that were full and most had there food. The man at the counter has been waiting for ten minutes to get his To go order. Three waitress. And they couldn't handle all that are you kidding. Get these girls more training. I've seen better service at Texas road House. Unless your not in a big hurry to get any where then go there. But if you are then you better go somewhere else. Like the Olympic really good hamburgers there. The night crew at steak and shake seems to know what's going on but day shift those girls are so lost. I don't know how these girls find there way home. We keep going back to this location because we keep hoping it will improve. Sadly, it does not. After reading reviews of other Steak n Shake locations, it seems this is not a Springfield problem, but rather a corporate problem. This place needs maintenance....cracked floor tiles, torn booth upholstery, stained tables, etc. Every time we have gone, the restaurant is chronically understaffed. The crew runs around trying to do too many jobs and can't possibly do them all as well as they should. They seem beat down and exhausted. I'm stunned anyone continues to work there. At 8:30 am today, we walked in and were told to sit anywhere bc the server was busy taking a drive-thru order. We hunted for breakfast menus and only found lunch menus and then took a seat. After sitting for several minutes, we noticed that a table full of people were waiting on their food and had been for quite a while. A couple was waiting at the register to cash out and no one was there. A man came in and was waiting to be seated. There was no one waiting on anyone in the entire place. The manager was working the grill and he was quite harried. After observing all of this, we decided to take our business elsewhere and avoid the frustration. The man waiting to be seated left as well. What a shame. There is more than enough business in Springfield to keep this place going, but they will probably end up shutting down because corporate isn't maintaining the store, nor are they attracting and keeping enough employees. My wife and I stop in from time to time...we like the milk shakes (who doesn't, right?). The service is always glacially slow. We stopped in last night for a snack. We walked in the door about ten minutes before 8PM. Our food arrived at 8:30! We spent nearly an hour at what is, effectively, a fast food restaurant. read more

I love Steak and Shake, but rarely eat inside. The Chicago Style steak dog is fantastic as are their steak burgers and shoe string style fries, especially when ordered with a side car of cheese sauce for dipping. Reading the other reviews one notices this establishment seems to have troubles with service in their dinning room, but as I said above, I nearly always order via the drive thru and always enjoy the food. read more

By far the worst experience. Took over 45 min to get our food. Asked for napkins 3 times and never got them, finally had to ask the manager for them. Food came out cold and soggy. Never cleared chili bowl from table. Never came back to check on us. Just a TERRIBLE experience. read more

4-18-13 when our party of 5 arrived we were the 3rd group in line, behind a family of 3 and another of 6, the restaurant was less than 1/2 full at 7:30, we waited 10 min before the manager came and seated the 1st group of 3, we waited another 10 min before the party of 6 left as well as our party...there were 2 waitresses that we saw, 1 manager and approx 7-8 in the kitchen...we went to the Olive Garden! read more

So, we walk in and they keep saying "HAVE YOU BEEN WAITED ON YET?" Us: "No." Them: "OK, IT'LL BE A LITTLE BIT!" After a 5-10 minute wait to get a table, they seat us in the worst seat in the restaurant. Then, we got our waters from our waitress after about another 10 minutes. Next, out of nowhere, one of our waters spilled and they tried to clean it up with a BROOM AND DUSTPAN! They brought out a mop, which they didn't even try to mop it, and it didn't even work, and with the tile and our rubber shoes, major fall risk. We go to the bathroom and get some paper towels and try to clean it ourselves, but some random woman came from nowhere and screeched at us for trying to dry the floor that they didn't even try to dry. What if someone fell?! So, after that fiasco, we still wait another 30 minutes and our food hasn't came yet, and we see our waitress DOING HER HAIR while fixing drinks. We walked out. read more

This particular Steak n Shake, being the only one in Springfield, has it moments. Most of them have been good, but when they are bad, they are bad, like tonight. We went through the drive thru, had a simple order, bowl of chili, a triple burger with cheese only, and price royal. We paid at the window, got our bowl of chilli, and after a few minutes they asked us to move forward for the rest. We waited about 10-15 minutes, a guy brought out a sack with the wrong order. He came back a few minutes later with the correct order. Before we left, we looked and it was not correct. The triple steak burger had everything on it. We went inside to have it corrected, and were treated like it was our problem by the short, curly haired manager. He only fixed the triple burger, and did not apologize, or offer to replace the rest of our order. The burgers were over cooked, dry and basically not any good, even the freshly remade burger. The fries were hard, and cold, almost inedible. The manager could have been more apologetic, I mean we weren't complaining to get something for free, but it would have been a nice gesture to have been offered a free burger or something. Will we go back? I'm sure we will, it won't be our first choice. read more

My family and I keep trying to go to Steak n Shake because we love the food. The food isn't an issue, thus the one star. However, EVERY SINGLE TIME we go, we wait a ridiculous amount of time for our food. On more than one occasion we've walked out after waiting over an hour. One time the manager offered us some $5 coupons, but the other times we just walked out frustrated. I wouldn't recommend going here if you're in any kind of hurry or if you're hungry. read more

My friend and I had ordered a breakfast of eggs , sausage, and silver-dollar potatoes. The eggs were not done to order, the sausage was good, the silver-dollar potatoes were greasy. The kitchen took a long tome to get the order right. The waitress was willing to try to make it right, then the manager apologized for the error. I noticed that as we entered the restaurant, there was a table that needed clearing. The waitress, the only one visible, waited on the customers first, then after she was caught up, as she put it, was going to clear the table. If we were in a hurry, we would have been out of luck. There were only a few customers in the store. We both decided that we would not be back during breakfast. Possibly, if there had been a crowd, the food would have come out more quickly. Sorry, Steak N Shake. There were waiters there, but they seemed to be in the back ground. If the manager had been on the Ball-he would have kicked in and come to the rescue for the waitress. read more

Slow Service & an unaccommodating manager made my visit to SnS lousy. Went with my daughter & her grandmother, my mom, who had just dropped $5 tip in spite of shoddy, virtually non-existent service, & then she just wanted her half-priced milkshakes when we went to check out. The guy @ the register said we couldn't get half-priced shakes because the order was put in B4 2pm; however, we didn't get our shakes till after 2:15pm. My mom asked for a manager & the "register guy" claimed he was the manager, though we don't believe that to be true & he proceeded to be rude n' dismissive stating that, "I've been running back n' forth making shakes and..." and What? you're a poor baby that can't do your work? you're a liar that does not consider customer service as being of the utmost importance? I personally tried to stay out of the situation, but he was impolite to my mother so I intervened. He annoyed me & I considered him to be petty n' ineffective. It was like talking to a half bald, bearded, fat dude in a pink shirt... because that's what it was. I stated the old adage, "The customer is always right" to which several older folks waiting in line agreed, including a Father time & Santa look-a-like. It really had nothing to do with the money we'd save from getting half off the shakes because my mom had spent over $500 already that day. It was more the principle of good n' accommodating service, & treating customers, especially woman, with Respect. So the cashier/alleged manager kept rambling on defensively & in my frustration, I told him not to say anything else to me and began to walk out. As I walked out, I thought to myself "one more word from him and he's getting it..." of course I had my mother and daughter with me so I had to digress. We stop at this place, historically, twuce a year..in June and late July..early August. The kids love it and its fine for adults..mmi must say in the past it has looked DIRTY..as far as the white tile walls and floors are concerned. BUTour last visit to the SPRINGFIELD OH..WAS the LAST there. We have historically stopped there in mid June and late July..early August on our trips to and from Northern Wisconsin... the decor..being white and black tiles...has always been rather dingy..was especially so this year on August 1st. When we arrived around 4:30 pm. We noted several tables..with finished dinner dishes with paper on them saying "Table out of Order"???? We waited at least 7 minutes to even be approached by anyone about being seated. We were ushered to a table/booth. The waitress cane fairly quickly and took our drink orders. We needed a few minutes to compile our dinner orders. She xane vack in about 5 minutes. No drinks. But apologies..and took our orders. About 20 min. Later we got our dinners..still no drinks...waitress was quite distressesed..said they were having a LOTof problems..mthat was obvious..said she would check on drinks again...we had requested them in "Go cups", which she said were usually done FIRST. We got our drinks at the end of our meal...additionalky, my granddaughter--who irdered a grilled cheese got 2 long blond hairs in her sandwich. I THEN WENT TO bathroom and found it excessively filthy..the walls as well as the floors (both white tiles) looked as if they had not been cleaned in years. The kast ti n e..last year. When we were there..the floir in the dining area was so filthy and had some liquid on it..had been sitting there wet all during dinner..just mentioned this to show it ISAn ongoing problem. When we went to pay. I STOOD at register almost 10 minutes before ANYONE approached mm e to collect payment...my bill was about $27..plus I bought 4 cans of chili...I gave a $100 bill. .it took ove 5 minutes for someone with a key come to open the register to even give me change. I will NOT be going back to this location again even tho we LOVE Steak and Shake...its getting worse instead of better at this location...you really need to check this location out.
