Sometimes you just need a good burger and fries. Well when I visited the Steak and Shake on south street, I waited 15 minutes at the drive-thru. Debating the whole time to leave, I stayed ordered food, drive-thru associate was very rude. Pull up to window, waiting to pay, look inside and it might be the dirtiest place I've seen in Lafayette. I pay, drive home, say a little prayer, eat food, it was disgusting, say another prayer. Probably never eat here again, total disappointment. read more

If could rate 0 stars i would. First off i asked for a bowl of chili the way the lady explained it it just sounded like a normal bowl of chili then it comes out 30 minutes later with spaghetti noodles and very little chili cheese sauce. So i say this isn't what i thought it was so i ordered a sandwich with chili cheese fries. It takes another 30 minutes and then when it comes out its my sandwich but normal fries. So i get a to go box and ask for my chili cheese sauce so the lady takes it back and she drenches my sandwich in cheese and chili so i just say you know what i just want a refund and left. read more

Normally love going to this place for a late night dinner, but last night was the worst experience i have ever had. I understand it was Christmas, would of thought the manager in the candy cane shirt would of been nicer, our server took our order and we did not see her again the rest of the night because of how under staffed they were last night. We got our food at a normal pace but waited over an hour for our milkshakes that we ordered before we ordered our food. When you get your order, it comes to you through a greasy, grimy window. The cashiers are surly and not friendly. But the food is amazing. Went through drive through, guy in front of me placed an order then left the line....being nice, I told her that person left, proceeded to place my order and she could NOT get it right after literally 5 minutes! I pulled up to the window, asked to please repeat my order, the "manager" proceeded to give me the order of the guy who had left! (No wonder he left)....I said no he left, she then told me my drink order and I said, yes and what else? Now she's yelling at me, saying I'm being rude when all I wanted was my order correct and told to me. My husband and I moved to IN recently and had never had Steak and Shake before. We tried it on Monday and were so impressed. The food was actually really good and the service was amazing. Went In last night they had just got hit by a bus rush cleared out and cleaned. We waited forever for the food and the ticket never made it to the table.we got up went to the register and paid our although I just wanted to walk out. Had the pretty manager been working harder and delegating better plus the lazy crew that just looked at ya and kept doing their SPARE TIME job and not going out every 5 minutes for a cigarette. I love the burgers here! I really dislike the service! We have poor service almost every time we go here. They rarely remember to bring the soup before the meal, even though we specifically request it. Half the time they forget I ordered a shake. The burger coming out the way I ordered it is hit or miss. Took my grandchildren there last night. They love to get a milkshake after their meal. Never again will I go to this location. I will try another location and see if it is better. We got seated and I noticed they were busy... But I was there from 7:50 to 9:36. This was unacceptable. Ordered our food and drinks all at the same time. 3 Kids meal.. Hot dog and Apple sauce... Chicken fingers and Apple sauce... Chicken Fingers and banana. The banana was gross. They didn't peal the banana and cut it up and put in bowl. It was more black on the peaking than yellow. Waitress Never came back to table. However I promised them they could have shakes. So we waited. Finally at 9:08 pm got her attention told her needed the shakes. She waited on3 more tables.. Took drinks out to those tables and finally at 9:36 brought my grandchildren their shakes. The place was disgusting. Food all over the kitchen floor. Stepping all in that food. At one time noticed the cook scratch and rub his head with gloves on. Then went right back to cooking. Did not change his gloves. first of all... the place was dirty. the tables were wet and had crumbs all over it. we got our food and we recieved our chili and we asked for cheese no cheese. i got my chicken fingers and there was a hair the color of our waiters hair. my brother got a burger and the bacon wasn't even cut. there was barely any condiments on his burger. no ketchup. barely any mustard. like no mayonnaise. i'm not even done. i walk into the bathroom and that was poo on the toilet that could have been cleaned like it was dry. clean it. the fries were all soggy and brown. the service wasn't that bad. only recommend this steak and shake if you aren't bothered by dirtiness and non quality food. thank you. try better stake and shake. read more

What I waste of space for what could easily be a fabulous vacant lot. I feel that the vacant lot has more potential as a restaurant than the Steak N Shake that is here. Every single time we go we are disappointed. We had totally stopped going but unfortunately I am sick and the only thing that sounded good was a grilled cheese and we have no bread. Next time we will just go to the store - it would be faster than waiting on this bunch to make your food. We called in the order and were told 10min. We waited the 10min and they said it was still going to be a while and for us to come back later. What??? So we drove alllll the way out to Teal Road, visited family for a second, and came all the way back and it still wasn't ready yet. It's not like they're packed or have a long line, mind you, just a 45min ticket time. To top it all off, my grilled cheese was the saddest excuse for a sandwich I've ever seen, being buttered and not toasted with cold cheese in the middle. I will do my business elsewhere. read more

I only give 2 stars because I was seated quickly, otherwise it would be one star. It was this a.m. around 9:45 (Sept.28th, 2013). Lafayette, IN at the corner of U.S. 52 (or Sagamore Parkway N.) and St. Rd. 26 (or South Street). It is never busy when I drive by, anymore, except the drive thru which is notoriously horrid, and I quit using that for ice cream years ago. Rude employees and mistakes on orders not discovered until all the way home.. Today was a Purdue game and it is on the direct route to the game, yet, not busy. Even though the traffic was backed up due to the onslaught of fans. So I decided to have a meal and I waited for service and I waited. Another party of 3 got seated quickly and immediately waited on. The server, an older woman, liked chatting with everyone, but ignored me. I was the invisible customer once seated, she walked by to serve, chat and, address others needs around me, on several occasions. I was most certainly in her section, saw no other server anyway, like I said not busy, at all. I left after about 10 minutes of staring at my menu. Seemed to be a skeleton crew. People waiting to pay looking disgruntled when I left. Hideous service, seems dirty and parking lot was littered up. Last time there, got cool food, had the a different server that coughed everywhere, was by myself again. She was a pitiful mess.. Also skeleton staff, that Saturday morning breakfast. Need to close, or change management, such a shame. I helped open this restaurant back in the late 70's. Back when we had pride in self and work ethic was pretty important.. This time they were out of chili and the waitress, Torrie, was kind enough to give us a voucher for a free bowl the next time we came in! Been here many times and Friday night had to be the worst service I've ever had. Our servers name was kyle. Barley gave us enough time to order our food, my boyfriend ordered a milk shake the same time as our drinks and the server ran away from the table before I could order one. In return I'm glad I didn't order one. We waited an hour for our food (the milk shake come after we were half way done with the food). Witnessed the same server yell at a customer because the customers glass was cracked and leaking. He blames the customer for breaking the glass when it was brought to the table already broken and then told the customer if he broke another glass he wasn't getting a new one. Ordered a cup of cheese with our food and he brought it to the table as we were getting up to pay and leave. Bad bad bad bad bad bad service! When we first walked in, the waiter Tony, just asked us how many we were and just walked away and never came back. After 5 mins of waiting, another person came and sat us. Then Tony reappeared with a tray of water without asking us what we wanted to drink and instead of handing us straws he threw it in front of us. Then he proceeded to seat two more tables and take their order before even taking ours. After watching him serve both tables before us we felt discriminated against. So we decided to get up and leave and as we were walking by him he shrugged his shoulder and gave us a sarcastic "Sorry".
