I came through the drive thru to try out the new tallow fries and to get a drink for my GF. The fries weren't bad, but it took forever and they gave us the wrong drink. I don't frequent Steak and Shake often, but happened to be getting ready to hop on the interstate for a long road trip with limited time for stops, so I figured a big thing of fries and big drink should work. Decided to dine in at Steak 'n Shake since I haven't been inside in ages. The place was pretty clean. They have a kiosk that you use to play your order for dine in or to go. So they have definitely upgraded to new technology since I've last been to a dine in location. I order a butter finger milkshake which is my favorite. It was delicious and definitely needed on this hot day. I also ordered one of the meal deals, where you get a burger and fries for less than six bucks. So I was totally happy with the price! Burger was great per usual and love their fries. The only reason why I'm giving them 4 stars is because there seemed to be a man camping out in the restaurant which was unsettling for me as a female, he didn't bother me but still unsettling. Excellent food. Polite (& accommodating) service despite an extremely busy drive-thru (we chose to dine in). The workers have to get everything since nothing is available to the table- no ketchup, napkins or sauces. Felt bad for the people working near the counter & we had to keep walking up to the counter if we needed anything. You can see that management has limited customer access to water & condiments for dining in- guessing they've had problems with folks stealing drinks there or just trying to keep their costs lower. Feels like a lot of places still struggling with staffing & recovering supplies post-pandemic. Our table was dirty but everything had been bussed. I'm torn about commenting about this, but the whole place could really use a deep clean. It's difficult to tell if it's because it's just old, or if it's dirty. I also know when a business is struggling, they can't afford maintenance and it's a bad cycle. We were trying to find fast food open on Thanksgiving and we finally found Steak n Shake. As expected, it wasn't crowded on Thanksgiving. We were seated pretty quickly. I got an eggnog milkshake and a Frisco melt with fries. The milkshake was quite good. I was actually pretty disappointed by the Frisco melt. It was a lot drier than normal. It definitely needed more sauce and I think it was overcooked. The fries are thin for my taste, but they were ok. The service was just ok. It took us a long time to get our food even though the restaurant was mostly empty. We were never bright our check, so we eventually just went up to the register to pay without it. Went today to claim a free shake. Recently saw a an IG reel of a girl who makes videos "only eating ____for an entire day." She did one with Steak 'n Shake so I decided to go and get what she got. I got an Oreo shake, frisco melt, and chili Mac. The shake was delicious, frisco melt was sooo good and not too buttery, and chili Mac was pretty good as well. The guys working were very nice and took the extra step to make our experience very pleasant. Whether you're eating in or carrying out you have to order at the kiosk. They don't even bring your food to the table, they call out your order number and you have to go to the counter to pick it up. If you are looking for what you know as Steak 'n Shake, this location will disappoint. First, the owner has transitioned the inside to be kiosk ordering only. There are no servers. It is self-serve drinks. No different than your average fast food place. The burgers are similar but not quite right. Little greasier and do not have that crisp edge. Fries are same. Did not see side-by-side shake option on menu but the strawberry and Reese cup shakes were good. The interior of this location does appear to be new and looks nice. There is no counter so no counter seating. The overall vibe is just not Steak 'n Shake but I guess is close enough on the food to do drive thru without the weird vibe. Yes, they have plain old boring cheeseburgers, but they also offer a broad variety of toppings to satisfy the taste buds of every carnivore - mushrooms, guacamole, cheese (american or cheddar), BBQ style, even one they call "The Royale" which comes with bacon, cheese and a fried egg. Fries are the thinner shoestring variety and they're not terribly greasy and are surprisingly not oversalted. Service is hit or miss. I've heard horror stories of rude staff. Today, my waitress was just so good that I not only mentioned it to the manager, I called their customer "complaint" line and told them how great she was. Steak n' Shake is open 24 hours. I grew up in St. Louis and Steak'n Shake was our go to burger joint. So today, my Mom and I were out running errands and decided to hit the good ole SNS. And, to our surprise, nothing has changed. It was just as good as we remembered. We arrived around 12:30 and the place was packed. However, we were greeted by a smile asking if we preferred a table or booth, booth no doubt.
