It's been awhile since we ventured into the Startz Cafe. We were looking for a great juicy burger ! Unfortunately it was not what we remembered. The service was good and not intrusive. There's NO ONLINE MENU! I would love to try this place, but without an online Menu, people Can't see what food you offer!

Today we dined at this café and we actually were a little apprehensive because of previous reviews. Once we got in, we were immediately told to find a seat anywhere we wanted it and a waitress was there right away to take our drink orders. The place started picking up and getting busy as we were there, but our waitress continued to make eye contact with us and make sure we had what we needed. I ordered the special which was Carne guisado tacos it came with a dessert and tea or coffee and the price was phenomenal. I gave that a shot and my husband ordered the pastrami on toast with fries. Our orders were done quickly and the tacos. The meat inside them was amazing. Melt in your mouth, tender, and not dry at all. The beans were wonderful homemade pinto beans and the rice was a little salty like chicken broth salty but I was thrilled with the meal. The tacos were huge. My husband got the pastrami like I said, and he said this was the best pastrami sandwich he has ever had. That's strong praise from this meat lover. The waitress was slower towards the end of our meal as the place got more packed, but she was still making eye contact with us. We saw that a dessert came with it for free and she quickly got that out to us after we finished our meal. The dessert was basically a small portion of apple cobbler or something like that which was very un impressive. Saturday morning in the height of the busy season for Canyon Lake and we wanted some breakfast. Got a seat at Startz Cafe without much wait at all (although it did seem to fill up while we were there). I had never been to this longstanding staple of the Canyon Lake area, but it was very cool. Definitely has an old school feel to it, and you get the sense most of the staff has been there for years. I sampled the biscuits and gravy and had the pancakes along with a couple tacos. This wouldn't be where I'd go specifically for tacos, but if you want an American style classic breakfast, I don't think you'll be disappointed trying this place! Great little country cafe! Serves breakfast, lunch & dinner! Great food & service!! My family and I were visiting the canyon lake area for a week and visited this little gem twice. I had the eggs w bacon & grits with sausage gravy & biscuit. Also had the patty melt on Rye bread with onion rings. My daughters had the fluffy pancakes & French toast. 3.8 STARS! It was my lucky day the first time I walked into Startz Cafe. The jukebox was waiting for me and there were 14 song credits still unused. I added a dollar and loaded 16 songs for my stay. The food is exactly what it likely always has been. It's diner cuisine. Don't expect anything fancy except the flavor. The chicken fried steak was super tender but a small portion for a big boy. They probably have never upsized their portions since day one. The veggies are soft and flavorful. The beer is cold and the ambience is good ole boy, small town, country town goodness. The second time I tried this diner it was for breakfast. The wait was ridiculous. We had a table of 7 and the kitchen kept pushing smaller orders in front of ours. That's how they do it. Imagine seeing people come in after you have already been waiting an hour and they get their food before you. We walked out. It's a great place on a slower night. Enjoy! read more

If a Hollywood location scout ever looks for a real diner/cafe - they should seriously start here. This place has been around for decades and sells food that is as awesome as your feeble memory says that the past should be. We traveled from New Braunfels to try it out and I think we all agreed to make it an every Friday trip. The place was clean, open, and just historically nostalgic. Lots of locals. FYI - the door is on the side of the building, not facing the main road. I had a burger and upscaled it with bacon and cheese. It was just one of the best burgers I remember having in ages. It tasted EXACTLY like that old diner my family used to go to. It was heaven. They had a small & large version. I went with the small and couldn't imagine what a large would look like. On a lark, I passed on fries and ordered a side of pinto beans instead. This is not hyperbole: they were the best pinto beans I've had in Texas! Flavorful, savory, a bit of a tang from a pepper in there. Wow, this was the best I've had. I don't know why I didn't order the easy fries. We stopped in for a satisfying breakfast and this place delivered. I had the veggie omelette and my husband had the chicken fried steak breakfast, which comes with eggs cooked your way. One of the best chicken fried steaks I've had in a long time. Crunchy and well seasoned. The breading didn't fall off when you eat it. Just delicious. All the entrees come with choice of hashbrowns, toast or a biscuit. The biscuit was flaky and tasted homemade. Coffee pretty standard. We left with our bellies full and happy. Also, the green salsa was excellent!! If you like salsa on breakfast food, don't skip the salsa verde!! Memorable. Only negative is that they're not taking Covid seriously. No staff were wearing masks. No sign saying masks required. No hand sanitizer. They were grumpy we wanted to sit outside, even though they have picnic tables set up. read more

Great place once you find it ,large sign very high up just about restaurant (really look for the sign).Service was great, our waitress was great joking with our party of eight sorry we can't remember her name but she just had a baby two months ago. Thank you for putting up with us. Food was good old home cooking (like Grandma) and serve in a timely manner. The restaurant is Old Texas with stone walls and give that old country feeling. We got migas, a taco, and pancakes....not a fan of the big chunks of tomatoes and peppers in the migas....the inside of the taco was good, but the tortillas were not....the biscuit...do not get me started on this biscuit, it definitely won the award for worst biscuit I have ever had in my life so far. We moved here a year and a half ago and gone here several times, however recently the prices have gone way up, and a breakfast cost me over $22 plus the tip. They don't take credit cards so it's cash or check, who goes to a restaurant and pays by check I don't carry a checkbook with me and stopping at the money machine beforehand is not customer friendly. So they raised prices and still don't take credit cards. They have been there for 78 years so the building is more than paid for. The servers are great!! but the food is not for home cooking they don't even use real hash browns just the reconstituted tasteless stuff. The omelets are just ok and so are the biscuits and gravy, nothing to write home about. They haven't updated this place in forever and the restrooms are a disaster, I have now stopped going there. read more
