This SB is what your neighborhood SB used to be like maybe 20-25 years ago before homelessness took over the country and particularly in CA, a sanctuary state not only for illegal aliens, but also drug addled, alcoholic, welfare dependent, and mentally disturbed individuals who live on the street and in many cases do not want a job or housing. This SB almost never has homeless people, has no key pad locks on the toilets, we have never seen it overcrowded nor having a more than an average noise level, and it has men's and women's toilets. This is a tourist area, so perhaps the service is what you would expect. The impression the various staff has given us over several years of visits to this area is that if you are a recognized local, then they are super nice to you, but if not, then they are pleasant, but not as nice as the staff at your local SB back home who may or may not recognize you as a regular. For what we typically order here, hot and cold teas and mochas (frap and coffee versions), the quality has been pretty consistent and typical compared to other locations. The parking lot is about medium sized for the size of the store and average for the area, although probably small compared to your store back home. We have always been able to get a spot so far. There are no left turns on this section of Lighthouse so plan to turn left or right and circle back on the side streets to access the lot. In the back, on Hawthorne, there is a back entrance to the lot that is super convenient if coming from a correct direction to use it. Unlike some SB's that no longer want you hanging around, there is ample seating and plugs for staying longer to study or hang out with your devices or friends. One of our favorite aspects of coming to this area is to come hang out at this SB, because none of them anywhere near our home area is still like it anymore. If visiting Pacific Grove, Monterey, or the surrounding areas, definitely plan to come stop by this SB location if only to see what SB and America used to be like long ago. read more

This location is super clean and always has a great vibe. Our drinks and food were ready on time. This store is eco friendly and their iced drinks do not come in plastic. They do not use plastic at all. Our drinks were ok but my partners feta wrap was not its normal taste and he only ate half to prepare for our day in Big Sur. We were staying at the InterContinental and after a swim and goofing off we headed to coffee. Surprisingly this was the closest Starbucks at .3 miles away. I would have thought there would be one right in the muck of Cannery Row. So it's a Starbucks. You know the Denny's of coffee. Very poor service!!! Do not order thru your app in store. They prioritize drive thru & forget your order!! We waited for one drink today 30 mins in store!!! We ordered thru the app. There were literally 8 employees supposedly working!! They are standing around, chatting with each other and smiling. I mean-- just work on the customers' drinks! Right?! They need retraining!! The Friday afternoon crew is very good at ignoring waiting customers with their backs to the customers. They were not busy working on drinks per se, but just standing and I'm not sure pondering philosophical life questions? I think they did not know what to do? But all 8 of the employees? This was so weird for a Starbucks. This crew was the Friday afternoon crew. 2-3 pm If I was the owner, I would get rid of 3 workers at least. What's the point if they are not working right?!!! When we visit again, we won't use the app to complete the order. Maybe just the drive thru. Or if you have a lot of time and just want to hang at a Starbucks, order in person with the cashier. You will still have to wait a good 15 mins though at least. Others were waiting too. And all of the employees were studiously avoiding eye contact, looking down, or standing with their backs towards all the people waiting. But the employees were not moving though. Unfortunately, I think 1 star is deserved. We ordered 2 drinks and 2 food items in house. We got the food items about 10 minutes after we placed the ordered. Then, we got 1 drink 20 minutes after we ordered. Then the last drink came out 30 minutes after we placed the order, and it tasted like straight milk, not the iced brown sugar shaken espresso that was ordered. When we asked if they could remake the drink, the barista said that she could give us brown sugar packets to put in the drink so she didn't have to remake it! What in the world?! So, I just paid $6 for a cup of milk that they want to give me sugar packets for? That was the point that we decided that we would not come back to this location. Overall, waiting a total of 30 minutes for coffee to just be made wrong is pretty bad. Keep in mind, when we walked in, only one person was in front of us and 3 people in the lobby. We watched 6 people that came in after us receive their food and drinks before us. This place does have friendly staff, but there is no organization going on behind the counter it seems. Side note, the bathrooms were pretty bad. Both stalls had toilets filled with other people's kids, (if you catch my drift). This is the largest Starbucks I've ever been to. A huge outside area, but also the inside is gigantic. The low rating is because the person who waited on us was not friendly. Poor service by a young female employee on April 21 at 6:51pm (drive-thru). I was doing Uber, i decided to take a break, I pulled up into their drive thru, ordered coffee and food. When I got to window, I had an empty Starbucks bucks from morning, I requested the cashier if she can throw it away, I even wrapped it up in clean napkins that she just gave me with me with food, I was waiting on coffee. Cashier said she can't take anything back because of covid, she had no mask on. I understand masks are not required, but I really think this was an unnecessary hassle. Strikingly big store, but I like that. I also really like the natural light streaming in from above, it gives the room a nice feel, a nice ambiance. Service was great, the drink my girlfriend ordered was solid, and had no other complaints! It's also cool that its a drive thru location, if you're into that sort of thing. When this Starbucks opened it functioned so well it could have been held up as a flagship for the corporation. I refer to my previous review and the comments within. The last three drive-through experiences over the course of six weeks were simply terrible. The wait in line now is excruciating. Two of the three visits I waited more than 15 minutes. Today with only two cars ahead of me I waited for more than 10 minutes. If the store has software to repudiate my claim I invite them to explain below. The woman at the window was unapologetic, could care less. They must know they have a problem. In years past there was comfort in knowing if the wait was extreme they would apologize or hand out a free drink card. Whatever happened to this store? I have to believe the baristas are trying but something is wrong when customers sit in the drive-through line long enough to consider catching a nap before getting their drink. I love this Starbucks! When it first opened, I was visiting on vacation. I loved the somewhat nautical decor that seemed to go well with the Monterey community. One of the great things about this Starbucks is it's open floor plan and many spaces. The long wood table is definitely a lovely piece. The entrance facing the street is closest to where you order. The rear door leads the the parking lot and large patio. I love the patio -- but beware of the seagulls! Look around and you'll see the guano on the roof and walls. No one wants to get hit by to bird poo. You can always sit under an umbrella. The comfy cushioned seating can be arranged into seat groupings or a sofa. It can offer be windy and chilly outside in the evening, so you may want to snag a prime spot on one of the upholstered chairs inside. Many Starbucks don't have comfy seating anymore; this one does! And you're near power outlets of you want to get work done. Other great features for this Starbucks are: a superb staff, consistent drinks, a decent food selection, nice restrooms, and a drive thru. The only reason I can't give five stars: this Starbucks closes too early! 10pm is so early. Uber and Lyft drivers need a place to hang out (and spend money!). Also, I can't tell you how many times I've seen Monterey Police officers at the 24hr CVS down the street because it's the only place open -- and just the other night, I saw one buying Starbucks in a bottle! That's a travesty! Please consider keeping this Starbucks open until at least midnight. I guarantee locals, tourists, and late shift workers will thank you for it! UPDATE: Although the floors are mopped way before closing, the restrooms need more attention. This morning they were in the same condition as last night. Plus, the trash was full inside the store...hinting last night no one took out the trash. The upholstered chairs also need to be cleaned of crumbs. Such a beautiful Starbucks; let's keep it cleaner. They don't fill your cup up. You pay for a grande and they give you it with 1/4 not filled to the top. When you order extra hot because it's not hot enough. Sometimes it's good and hit and miss at this location. Be mindful that you won't get a full cup of hot latte or coffee. They say it's because the form has flatten but it's not an issue at other coffee shops or Starbucks. read more

The coffee tastes like it was made in an old coffeemaker that was stored in a basement for the last few decades..... unwashed.
