She had beautiful smile everytime she interacted with any customer to give them their drinks. We also noticed a group of customers come in quarter before closing. They were respectful and patiently waited at the register to order. Cashier staff came out a minute before 4 and just told those customers that they are closed and turned customers away. We felt bad that the customers were waiting at the register just to be told they are closed and turned away.

For a place attached to state highway infrastructure, they could have done a mediocre job, but I note that this is a classy establishment that takes pride in offering good coffee. Now I wonder why Seattle Ferry Terminal cannot have a comparable coffee shop and we have to put up with those drat machines?

One note, it'd be nice if the box included rice. it's available for $3 extra, which feels trivial. As for dining environs, it's located in a refurbished service station. There's limited indoor seating by the service counter, but most tables are under the overhang where gas pumps would have once been. I'd go at a slightly off-time if possible to ensure you get a seat! The staff were also super kind and helpful. We were originally about to order three boxes, but they actually recommended sticking with two, saying it would be enough and they were completely right. We were stuffed. Each bento box comes with a variety of poke styles (9) you can mix and try, which made the whole experience even better. Every single one we tried was fresh, flavorful, and really well-prepared. I'm from Seattle, but this is absolutely worth the ferry ride to Hi Life. I'll definitely be coming back.

Today I stopped by for one of their quiches--their spinach and goat cheese--and a lemon blueberry scone. Both were super yummy. I often get one of their chais too, which are also quite tasty (and not at all dry, a common problem with scones). Having Blackbird downtown makes it quite convenient to just stop by while on the way to elsewhere. After a local saw us waiting 30 minutes for our toast and jam she told us to go ask and that "sometimes the staff can get really overwhelmed ". So my daughter stood in line a second time and was told that the employee heard we wanted it to go so it had been sitting at the end of the counter the whole time. We specified we wanted to eat it inside. We asked kindly if they could fix the mistake and we were happy to wait. To my genuine surprise the employee with the pink hair opened the bag of toast, plopped our three orders on trays along with the plastic to go tiny jams and dropped them on our table with the most dismissive uncaring attitude I've seen. You could get more care at a convenient store. We thought we'd try to eat them anyway and the pieces were cold and hard. I asked her about them and her response was "well you asked for to go". Not only does she seem incapable of doing her job basics but as an employer I'm shocked she is granted the simple tasks of serving toast in the first place. She made sure to put plenty of energy into gossiping with her co worker about her irritation with us. We have strong ties on the island still and come back often but we will gladly skip the visit here in the future. I certainly hope these staff members get some basic skills in customer service for their own future.
