This restaurant has been open since 1901. It is old school Hanford. The building is obviously old. The booths are old. The bathrooms are old. Did I mention it is old. The food is fantastic classic food. The parking is a little tough at times but twice around the black you will find a good parking spot. The staff is usually one waitress who knows what she is doing. People return here because the food and service is fantastic. It definitely isn't hi tech. No electronic gadget to pay for ticket at the table. Walk up to the cash register and pay for it like it was meant to be. I've eaten occasionally over the last 20 years or so but more often recently. I like the old school atmosphere. read more

My 2 21 year old college students were so excited to try this "hometown" cafe. Walked in, (today, sept 6, 2021. So whomever was that rude waitress. I'm sure all the hometown peeps know) pretty much ignored. Sat down and we're immediately told by the rude waitress that they couldn't have breakfast and they would have to wait for their lunch as they were going to get all breakfast orders first. They asked for 2 waters and my son ordered. The rude ass waitress NEVER brought them even their water! But the less brown party of 6 who walked in after them got all 6 of their drinks with no issue. Then their food! My highly respectful college students and full time job holders in the service industry decided to walk out feeling humiliated. And that rude ass waitress just watched them. So dam racist you'll let money walk out the door, I hope you own the place. And we have taught our children to tip very well. I don't know or care if this real piece of a person was prejudiced because she judged a young couple and thought they wouldn't be generous tippers or just an ass as they were the only brown people in there and felt awful at the way they were treated. Been here a handful of times and it seems every time I've walked it it's like a scene from an old western movie where the guy walks into the bar and the entire place stops what they're doing, gets awkwardly quiet and everyone turns around and looks at you. I've been here twice and the first time it was very good! But today I went back and there was a new younger waitresses that I've never seen before and she was terrible!!! We were the only table in the place! And she was just sitting down at the counter on her phone texting. She forgot our drinks we had to ask for menus for silverware and for a refill on drinks. The place was dirty and there were some flys inside and it made it hard to enjoy the food cuz I was waving flys away the entire meal. My wife and I stopped here twice for lunch and were very pleased. This restaurant is a step back in time. They do not have lots of fanfare, foo foo and hype. They do however have good food, excellent table service with fair prices. The restaurant is clean. The waitresses are very helpful and friendly. Their menu is simple and easy to read. Most of their customers appeared to be locals. The restaurant is not easy to find. They are open Monday through Friday from 6am to 2:20pm. We highly recommend this restaurant if you enjoy a restaurant that has good food without the fanfare and hype. read more

This is the worst place i have ever been. Bacon must have have been deep fried and gravy would have been better if it came out of gravy train dog food. I was here last week when I am in Hanford. Since moved. Our go to spot for Breaky. We didnt make it to breaky on time. I enjoy their breakfast. Biscuit n gravy, BiG O pancake and chicken fried steak is a must. Apparently the chef makes it from scratch, from what I was told and why it takes sometime I tried the turkey sandwich with their soup it was delicious. I havent been here quite sometimes new faces. This little mom and pop shop is well worth the drive considering I live in Fresno. Go in your stretchy pants because the portions are huge for a very affordable price. I have been coming to Stars for well over 10 years. My husband and I would normally eat in the dining area for lunch and it was hit or miss as to the pleasant experience because of Joan (server.) She was often just down right rude to us and we always tipped well. We stopped eating in the dining area because of her and always had a nice pleasant experience in the bar. After moving to the bar, she won't even acknowledge our existence I would assume because we stopped supporting her through tips. Why would I want to tip someone that is rude to us?? I was in today with my sister-in-law and sat in the dining room. Joan never said "hi", "welcome" and again was very rude. I was totally embarrassed bringing my sister-in-law to experience this rude lady. We arrived shortly after 2PM -- happy hour -- and we were in for a quick appetizer after shopping. We both ordered appetizers and two beers. When the bill came, the appetizers were not happy hour prices and one beer was not. I had a merchandise receipt from Pier 1 (across the freeway) that indicated that I was there at 2:01 so I was obviously there after 2PM. The time or our receipt at Stars showed 1:50 so nothing was discounted. I asked Joan about it and she indicated (as usual very rude) that the computers don't reset for 30 minutes after. That's fine but I indicated that happy hour is advertised from 2-6. She abruptly grabbed the bill and said she would try to get it fixed. A few minutes later, Gordon (bartender) walked in and I told him what happened and he said "no problem" he could fix it. He was very pleasant. The bill was $23 with Joan and after the adjustment is was $13. Recommendation: sit at the bar during lunch. I will never sit in the dining room ever again unless Joan is not working. I'm retired and work retail and would never treat a customer with such disrespect. read more

I gave them 4 stars but honestly my last visit deserves 0 stars. This due to the usual waitress not being with the company anymore. She had it under control and didn't miss a beat. When there I witnessed people bussing their own tables and getting a heir own drinks AND got their food before we did we waited a good 20-30 minutes for our food . Excellent friendly service and great breakfast at a great price in a no frills old style local diner! Simply cannot be beat in the Hanford area. Disappointed in myself that I have not tried sooner. Star Restaurant in now my favorite breakfast spot in the area. Yes it is local, yes they know most of their clients orders as they walk in the door but I felt very welcomed and comfortable as a first timer. Excellent!! The food is great, price is the best in town along with the prices, and the service is awesome. It is amazing how Christy can remember what you want to eat, even if you are not a regular and only frequent ocassionally. How one waitress can handle a full restaurant is great. I think she should be waitress of the year every year. The owners are very welcoming and friendly. To my knoweledge, they are the only restaraunt in town featured in a magazine as well a TV show. This place has always used to be my go to breakfast/lunch place. It's reasonably priced and you always leave full. However I miss the server from two years ago. Every time I go now I always hear customers being turned away or told no. They only serve burgers before 11 now and if you try to order a BLT considering they make toast & bacon for breakfast plates it's an unreasonable request. But burgers? Totally reasonable. I went in on a Saturday and saw the waitress literally deny customers 45mins before closing because they closed soon. And instead of tending to her tables, she was busy tending to her children she brought with her to work. The food is still the same, but the service definitely isn't anymore and for that reason I won't be going back anymore. read more

I can't say that it is really my thing - but who am I to argue with the connoisseurs of the biscuit and gravy family, the dozens of old guys that fill this place who seem to have grown up at the Star's tables? Our neighbor told us about Stars and the great food. She was right. The special pancakes, 2 eggs, choice of Bacon, Sausage or Ham......for $3.99. Who can beat it??? Our server was friendly....and that's about the only good thing I can say about this place. We went in on a Saturday morning around 10:40am. Restaurant was not super busy. We waited 45 minutes for two omelet breakfast plates and an English muffin. The eggs tasted awful, and had a grayish look. The hash browns were flavorless and barely browned. The country potatoes had a good flavor, but were cold. Now, hours later, both of us that are eggs are sick. Definitely will NOT be going back. read more

Usually good service and food is good. I have been coming here since I was a child with my grandfather back in the 1970s. After todays experience I will never go back. We ordered our food, and after close to 45 minutes still no food, the young waitress did not even apologize for the wait or bothered to say anything to us. We decided to leave and go somewhere else, the waitress said to us after noticing us getting up, said that our food was on the grill, still no apolodgy. I told her were leaving because its taking way to long, I have never waited close to an hour at any restaurant. The cook was extremely slow and the waitress needed to learn good customer service skills. If I could give a half star I would! read more

Watch Anna Kendrick's video 'When I'm gone' and you'll swear it was filmed at The Star Cafe. Eating at The Star is like taking a step back in time right down to the cost of your meal; fifties prices and good grill food. Their hamburger and fries is the bomb. Roger, the owner/grill cook, deserves a pat on the back for serving up great food at a reasonable price. If you want to feel 30 years younger I suggest you have breakfast or lunch at The Star, ride the downtown carousel and then top it off with a short walk to Superior Dairy for the best and biggest scoop of ice cream ever! read more

For breakfast, the most costly item on the menu is an omelette loaded with goodies for $6.99. My favorite omelette for that price is the Western with cheese. It comes with hash browns or potatoes, and the choice of toast or biscuit and gravy. Coffee is a dollar. Iced tea is $1.25. This is an old restaurant, one that is not beautiful to the eye, but it gets the job done with about 13 booths, 5 tables, and a dining bar. They usually only have one waitstaff, but that waitress has a couple of people who pitch in and you don't really notice the place is understaffed. They also serve lunch, and when it's lunch time (11:00 a.m.), they quit serving breakfast. The most expensive lunch may run you as much as $7.99 for a pair of pork chops, salad or soup, vegetable, mashed potatoes and gravy, and bread. They do a great job with old-fashioned, oversized cheeseburgers. The lunch menu is mostly comfort foods that mom used to make. The place is an excellent value, so long as you understand that the food prep is old school. read more

My brother told us about this place and said they had amazing burgers and cheap prices, so we wanted to check them out. It took us a long while from when he told us about the place until we actually got to try it because they close at like, 2:30 pm and some of us work lol... Anyway, my husband got off of work early on my day off, so this was the first place we thought of for lunch! Very circa early 1900's, doesn't look like they've really changed anything in there at all, except maybe some wall decor. The service was very fast and friendly, and would give an honest opinion on the food and portions. I got the mini burger with fries (add cheese of course :) and the husband got a regular cheeseburger combo. They're prices are cheap (Mine was $3.99 plus I think .50 for cheese and husbands combo was $5.75 included fries and drink) and their burgers were delicious. Meat was moist, not over cooked and thick, fresh veggies thrown on top and great bread. Fries were good, too and their ranch was delicious (Hey, I'm picky about my dipping sauce!) The mini burger was PLENTY for a ladies appetite and the regular cheeseburger was more than enough for the husband. We'll definitely be back, if we can catch them open :) read more
