First time here, but my fiancé and future Father in law swear by this place so I gave it a chance. I read the reviews about the flies, but none were present- maybe since it's winter? The hot chocolate was made with water, but definitely needed more chocolate, and it was cold within a couple of minutes. The pancakes are huge and cover the whole plate, but again you have to eat everything really fast because it's cold in there. I LOVE the "take you back in time," feeling when things were affordable and they made sense. Their special is $10 and it has everything you need. 10/4/25 Getting breakfast for tomorrow. I called and ordered the ham veggie omelet, egg white with country porters and sub French toast for an additional charge. Instead of toast/biscuit. The worker was kind and said it would be ready in 10 min. Arrived, greeted by kind worker and she said it was almost ready. They were definitely busy! Packed! That's when you know it's good! Comfortable feeling. Music playing. Booths, tables and a breakfast bar. I sat there until it was ready. Brought shortly later and offered salsa. Yes please! Brought that out with well wishes! Great! Stopped in for breakfast, it has been years and the place is still here. Its clean and vintage she how I remembered. Food is still good, service is great. I love to still see it doing well. I got the veggies omelet with cheese, mushrooms and spinach. Very tasty. I had the golden perfect hash browns and sourdough toast. Oh sweet! Friends had biscuits and gravey. Another had the breakfast special. So yummy! The ambience was Norman Rockwell, meets Americana, old time vintage diner. Service is friendly and genuine. Substitutions are no problem. The pace is slower, friendly and homey. Our waitress was awesome. They have a great tradtional lunch menu, as well. There are burgers, salads and sandwiches. The hot roast beef sandwich looked delish. The grilled cheese sandwich is a tasty, traditional favorite. Don't try the French Toast, as you will be craving it forever. Each bite is paradise. You've been warned. Both the golden hash browns and homestyle potatoes are great! Their soup of the day always good. They do great salads, and traditional sandwiches. It is special to eat something your great grandmother might have eaten. Nothing trendy here, just great food, perfected over 124 years. They are open from 7:15am to 1:00pm. If you are addicted to snazzy and pop, go to Denny's or somewhere, but if you want to enjoy the type of America when life was easier, most of definitely go to Star Restaurant in Hanford. A return to an earlier time, and decorated accordingly, with lower prices, hard working wait staff, home cooking - nothing sent from corporate freezers, a look at the past -back to1901, and pancakes the size everyone used to serve is what you will find. Don't be like some of the reviewers who are probably so stressed and hurried, they are looking for a McDonald's experience in a jewel of the past. Stop demanding and enjoy what is there. Just be pleasant, smile and say thank you when being served by some of the hardest working waitresses in the west - the way it used to be mostly everywhere. You will leave calm, well fed, and glad you slowed down a bit to enjoy the finer things in life - your neighbors, great food and prices, and poss some disdain toward our more modern ways. Good basic breakfast, huge pancake, good price for the special, but the day I was there, they only had one waitress and the place was several tables and was getting busier. There were plenty of empty tables when I sat down, but wait was very long, which was problematic for me since 2 eggs, sausage, and a pancake should take 40 mins tops from order to exit and I was there almost twice that, which made me pretty late for my next activity. It was almost 30 minutes before I even got to order. I don't have anything bad to say about this place, but that's too long for me for a simple breakfast. read more

I loved this place but I will not be going back. There was an elderly couple that got there before me and my husband did. And me and the elderly woman ordered the same thing and they ordered before for we did. And the waitress decided to give me the order rather than the couple that ordered before. Im sorry but if someone ordered before they ordered first so they should be the ones to get the food. That waitress should never have picked who would get the food. The waitress was extremely rude. I ended up walking out after all this. Im sorry but that's just horrible for her to do that. Im extremely upset at the quality of the service there. Again I will not be returning. The food was great this time. This is my second visit the first time the food was burnt and not so good. My husband took us here today and I was quite skeptical. I even took a long time to order because I was so disappointed from the first visit. Anyway the waitress recommended their French toast which end up being super tasty. My Husband got biscuits and gravy really tasty this time. Just for the record he got it last time and it was burnt. Came here to have a nice breakfast with my nieces and nephews. An absolute disappointment in terms of service and food. Sausage was burnt, food took over an hour to get to our table. The waitress was stressed due to how busy it got, but had one of the most disgustingly rude attitudes I have ever encountered while being serviced. It was appalling. Since it's been back open. We have eaten here twice. Yesterday was the first day I noticed something. Star Restaurant is a great place first of all. The food is awesome. The service is good. The prices are good with daily specials. But.......yesterday I noticed something that made me do this review. We sat at a table under the swamp cooler. At first I thought no problem. I mean it wasn't blowing so strong that it was irritating. But after ordering our food and sitting and talking. I noticed this grit on the table. I figured whatever. But then it got irritating and I got a napkin and tried to wipe the table down. Man that napkin was black with dirt. I was thinking dam that's getting on peoples food. I looked up at the swamp cooler outlet and saw nothing preventing anything from blowing around the room. Even dirt. As you look up all you see it's caked with black dirt. I'm nowhere near being a germaphob. But dam this is ridiculous. How the hell do they not know? I mean seriously. We moved and ate at another table. But I thought has anyone else noticed this? Hell. Has the owner even noticed? As much as I love this place. I won't be back. I hate to say it bcz it's one of our favorite places. But this is a law suit waiting to happen. You get that one person that is looking for this sort of thing and ur gonna be hauled to court for food poisoning or something. Came here between breakfast and lunch... The biscuits and gravy are amazing. The biscuit is first cut in half, buttered and grilled! Then a great helping of sausage gravy gets poured over the two halves. OMG! Also got the hearty bowl of beef stew. Nothing wrong here: lots of beef and veggies in a great broth! Service is great too! I swear I have thought about going to Star Restarant since I moved here almost 6 years ago, and I just made it here today. Glad I did. Yes, the business hours make it difficult for the average working person to make it in...6 am to 2:20 pm Monday thru Friday. That being said, if you can find a way to make it here, do it. Walking into the building, you feel like you are transported back in time. Seems like it is very close to how it was back in 1901, when it opened. I like that! The service was fast, and the food, burgers, were cooked quickly, to order, and came out hot and fresh. Really hot and fresh! Buns were toasted and crispy on the inside, soft and chewy on the outside. The meat patty was nicely browned yet still moist inside. Veggies were fresh and plentiful, and the fries were hot out of the oil. All in all, an excellent value at $5.75 for the cheeseburger combo of burger, fries and drink. I would love to try breakfast over here some day, should I have the time. Also worth mentioning is the lunch special at $5.25, featuring a different dish each day. The waitress was quick, friendly and efficient, and also the source of my only gripe. Our meal was to the tune of her airing out her personal problems to what I can only guess was a regular patron willing to listen. I can't say I enjoyed that. read more

horrible place. I was so excited to finally come try star restaurant since I was a kid. We sat down waited 30 min to even get a men. there was only one waitress so I fig that's why. Understandable. she walked right past us serval times and didn't give us a menu. Other customers came in she greeted them got them menus gave them there drinks and soon after got there food whie my friend and I were waiting for a menu . it's unfortunate these small business treat people that way. I understand there loyal customers but I mean come on we didn't even get a menu. Then she was rude about the time cause my friend wanted a bacon burger she said it wasn't lunch time so no bacon then she asked for a sprite no soda and she said well don't u see the soda guy here. very unprofessional and second hand embarrassmen. never again. Was so excited to try this place. It is filthy. The wait is so long. There were only two of us. We ordered breakfast. We waited for almost an hour. We should have just left but I thought the food would be worth it. While we waited, we saw many people come in, order and then leave because they were tired of waiting for food that never came. The Star was located across the street from my hotel lodging (Comfort Inn) and was a convenient choice. Service was very good; our server was rocket-propelled and I was impressed with her constant movement. My friend and I enjoyed conversation, and noise levels surrounding us did not make that difficult. My breakfast was filling and adequately well-prepared. This place has been here a while and locals are comfortable here. The prices are very reasonable, very affordable. The breakfast experience here may depend on your expectations and I would recommend objectivity. I did not experience dinner here, but I did return for breakfast and was able to address some paperwork while sipping my coffee. read more

I'm a big fan of traditional American foods (who isn't right!) fries, burgers, glob of ranch *heaven* The building here has a lot of history and it shows, rustic exterior and a down to earth interior. You can feel the local vibe. I no longer eat meat, I have switched to a mostly vegetarian/pescatarian diet. I asked waitress if the chief would make me a special order, the cook him self walked over and asked what I wanted. I asked for a burger with no meat, instead of feeling judged or excluded he processed to offer me a few options and I finally settled with a fish burger. This restaurant has been open since 1901. It is old school Hanford. The building is obviously old. The booths are old. The bathrooms are old. Did I mention it is old. The food is fantastic classic food. The parking is a little tough at times but twice around the black you will find a good parking spot. The staff is usually one waitress who knows what she is doing. People return here because the food and service is fantastic. It definitely isn't hi tech. No electronic gadget to pay for ticket at the table. Walk up to the cash register and pay for it like it was meant to be. I've eaten occasionally over the last 20 years or so but more often recently. I like the old school atmosphere. read more
