Last night, 6/27/26, 3 of us went to enjoy a meal at BBD. I ordered a Santa Maria steak dinner. On my 3rd bite I spotted a hair under the meat!! They offered me another plate from the same kitchen the first one came out of. NO THANK YOU!! My husband ordered his usual chicken fried steak and eggs. His steak came way over cooked he was having a hard time cutting through the overcooked meat. He scraped off the gravy that was covering the burnt meat He did not complain to them. Years ago, I went to Black Bear in Visalia for the first time and was really impressed by the food, service, and fun atmosphere. I had the corned beef hash, and it was delicious. I was hoping to have that same experience again at the Hanford location, but unfortunately this visit was very disappointing. The corned beef hash I was served tasted old and reheated, and it was so overcooked that it was dry. I sent it back, and while the replacement wasn't dried out, it still tasted old. The hash browns were also poor quality -- it looked like damaged parts of the potatoes had been chopped up and cooked instead of being trimmed off. There were pieces in them that really should not have been served. I even took a picture of one piece that appeared black. Very disappointing compared to my first experience. read more

Our service was excellent!! Food was good. And large portions even for the "less" meal....i couldn't finish it. We got there at the perfect time before the dinner crowd started coming in. My only complaint is the plates are so huge! We were greeted and seated as soon as we entered. It's is very rustic, you feel like you are in a cabin in the mountains. The juke box was rocking oldies, we felt comfortable. We took my great grand daughter out to lunch. It was her 13th birthday. I ordered a bowl of biscuits and gravy. The coffee was wonderful! My cup was always full! My daughter ordered a bowl of chili and cornbread! It was a good sized bowl! Very hot and seasoned well, not too spicy. My great grand daughter ordered the mini Volcano , which is one egg, 2 pancakes, and bacon! She loved the pancakes, said they were so good! I came in for the holiday prime rib special which came to a total with tax of $40.04. That's not a bad price for prime rib and I was happy to pay it. The food when it arrives looked wonderful on the plate. And the waitress was very kind and courteous and attentive. So very good service. However the prime rib was so tough that the majority of it I had to chew up and spit out in the napkins or put on a separate plate. The stuffing was cold and for the most part there was no flavor in the green beans. But because of the great service I'm still giving them three stars. But if you're looking for great prime rib this is not the spot. However I do know that the rest of the food on their menu for the most part is excellent and black bear is an excellent restaurant. It was my wife's birthday. Where would you like to eat lunch? I asked. Black Bear Diner, of course she replied. We walked in the door to the tune of Chiquitita by ABBA playing on the jukebox. The mood was set. We each decided on a burger. They have good burgers at the Bear. My wife decided upon a California Burger. They're always so tasty with plenty of avocado. Sweet potato fries rounded out her order. I chose a Parmesan sourdough cheeseburger with onion rings for a side. Mmmm. I've had one before. and was highly anticipating an encore. This amazing sandwich is served on cheese encrusted sourdough bread with the inside filled with a big burger, cheese, tomato, lettuce and grilled onions. The staff were all friendly, wishing my wife a happy birthday as they learned of it one by one, and we settled in anticipation of or soon to arrive lunch. Two beautiful plates soon arrived and the conversation pretty much ceased as we dug in to enjoy our meals. We did comment to each other point by point of how good each part of the meal was. I picked up Christmas dinner from Black Bear Diner yesterday for my friend and I and once again I can't rave enough about the size of these servings. When you pick up the box it's in it's so heavy. It feels like three meals. And it IS usually three meals for me as it is almost everything else I order there. I'm 75 so I don't eat a lot at one time and neither does my friend who is older than I am, but at $51 for two meals of this size, she and I each got nearly three meals out of it. So if my math is correct, that's only $8.50 per meal!! Where in the world can you find that anywhere else?! They also have the BEST chocolate cream pie in the world, although I didn't get that this time, because I already had an apple pie in my freezer and I'm pinching pennies a little. Next time though. for some reason, I keep having trouble remembering to take pictures, but after I'd already eaten half of my salad and part of my dinner, I remembered - so what you're NOT seeing in the picture (just because I accidentally cut it out of the frame), is a cornbread muffin and a piece of pumpkin pie (with a lot more turkey and mashed potatoes than you're seeing there because I had already gobbled them up). I showed up around 11:30 a.m. which is pretty late on Christmas Day to order a dinner, but I paid for it inside and then waited with quite a few other people for maybe 15 or 20 minutes, which was way shorter than I expected as the the parking lot was jammed. We had planned to have Thanksgiving dinner with some family in Nevada. However my son was admitted into the hospital last night with pneumonia. Being a holiday there wasn't much to choose from bcz just about everything is closed. But I knew Black Bear would be serving a Thanksgiving dinner for most of the day. So we got there just in time to get our name on the wait list. Bcz they were closing at 3:30 pm. In fact I saw them turning people away. We were able to get a table. I tell you this place was packed. I'm not surprised bcz the staff here is really good. We decided on ordering the prime rib dinner and water with lemon to drink. Being so busy I was surprised at how good the service was. You would have thought that the service would be lacking but nope. I was so pleased with how attentive they were. The food was so good today. It was well worth the wait and definitely made up for not being able to have dinner with our family in Nevada. Idk the young guys name. But he was a great server. I made sure and gave him a good tip. Hanford is a small town with not very many good restaurants to eat at. Black Bear Diner is by far my favorite place to eat in Hanford. I love the atmosphere and how helpful the staff always is. I love the selection of food that is available and they have never let me down. read more

They were super busy for a week day but still very friendly and polite. Steak and eggs were ordered and cooked to perfection. Serving sizes large enough for leftovers. My kid's wanted to try a new place so we decided to stop into this restaurant. When we first walked in it gave us this Oregon and Washington feel to it. My kid's enjoyed the decorations with the bear's. The wall paper, the vibe was very relaxing. My server, Julie was an outstanding server! From the very beginning she interacted with my children, she has this natural thing about her. You can tell she enjoys interacting with kids. She was very helpful and always making her way back to our table to ask if we needed assistance. I wanna say the food is great, but my server was Amazing!! We went in the evening. I came in for breakfast on Mother's Day and even though it was crazy busy, we received great service. The servers were friendly and they were hustling to get everyone taken care of. I ordered the Bear's Choice with two over easy eggs, French toast, a sausage link, and a slice of bacon. It was all delicious! The French toast was slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with a subtle sweet flavor that wasn't overpowering. The thick cut bacon was cooked perfectly crispy on the edges and soft in the middle, but the sausage was even better. My mom ordered the Bear's Choice with pancakes, scrambled eggs, and ham (which she enjoyed the most), and also ordered a side of hash browns. We both had freshly squeezed orange juice, but I wish the juice had been colder. Everything tasted fantastic, and I look forward to returning. The only con was that this location could use a good cleaning. The carpets need to go (my mom left with gum on her shoe) and I noticed some of the seats in different booths were torn and in need of replacement. The blinds were quite dusty and I saw a glass partition that was smudged with handprints. Not even an exaggeration when I say this was the worst breakfast I've ever had in my life. Got the California bacon Benedict. Rotten spinach mixed in with fresh spinach, green tomatoes, over cooked poached eggs. Cold hash browns, cold rubbery bacon. Coffee smelled like an ash tray and tasted like they never properly clean the coffee maker.
