We stopped at Superior Dairy Products in Hanford on our way home from Pasadena, largely because our driver had been there before during his Amtrak days and considered it one of those "must stop" places along the way. He was so right. Superior Dairy is temporarily operating out of a small trailer while its classic old building across the street is undergoing renovations. That might not sound like the ideal setup, but the two young ladies working there certainly didn't let it get in the way of providing a great experience. Both were exceptionally friendly and helpful and seemed genuinely happy to take care of us. I somewhat hesitantly asked whether they could make a pineapple milkshake. This was a deal breaker at Cold Stone when they looked at me like I was crazy for asking--I've never been back. Here, though, there was a brief "Hmm..." moment before one of the young ladies said, "We don't have a pineapple shake on the menu, but we certainly could add fresh pineapple to our vanilla ice cream." Sold! The result was an excellent fresh-pineapple milkshake--and exactly the kind of little bit of creativity and customer service that makes a stop memorable. It tasted so good on a hot day! The temporary location is actually quite pleasant, sitting alongside a beautiful park near Hanford's civic auditorium, with shaded outdoor seating where you can enjoy your ice cream. There's some interesting history right there as well: The distinctive building behind the stand is the old Kings County jail, known locally as "The Bastille." And then there's the ice cream itself. The temporary operation may mean simple surroundings and very plain serving cups, but don't let appearances fool you. The cups are plain, but the taste is not. My only regret is that I didn't try the fresh peach. Based on that pineapple milkshake, I have a feeling I missed something pretty special. Superior Dairy was a fun, friendly, unexpected stop on the trip home--and one I'd happily make again. read more

Our party of 4 was excited to stop in on a Wednesday afternoon for ice cream. Love that they have not changed the cute pink decor. Realizing my hunger outweighed my sweet wish for the cold treat, I eyed the food menu. Our helpful ice cream server cautioned the sandwich menu was not super special, yet my ham sandwich was still tasty and filling. We requested chocolate chip, strawberry, cookies, rocky road, and lemon ice cream. The lemon is one of our ice cream server's favorite flavors and was suggested when asked. It nostalgically reminds me of a blast from the past Girl Scout Lemon Cookie, not too sweet but not too tangy. We enjoyed our choices seated at the only 4-stool counter available for dining. Wanted to try some ice cream from this local shop. Went to the address listed on Yelp and it was under construction. Sign outside of the business said to check out their trailer across the street at the park. Was so glad to try their ice cream. My fiancé got the junior stack of chocolate chip and I got a single stack of strawberry and chocolate chip. The ice cream servings were huge and definitely hit the spot on a warm spring day. Not allowed to be inside business- after receiving ice cream you need to leave. We were excited to come here and have some ice cream with family. We tried the peach (seasonal flavor) and the mint and chip. The mint and chip was ok, the peach didn't have a lot of flavor, and the toppings were from a can. The ceiling was very cool looking. We decided to take the train to Hanford to join in on the Fresno tradition. We went to Superior Dairy, I didn't know they were under construction. So they have a cute little trailer across the street. Service I think is slower because they can only fit 2 people in there at a time to make the ice creams, milkshakes etc. The ice creams are HUGE. A single is like a double, I mean really huge. A Jr size is a good size, it's a normal sized ice cream. The thing is, if you order toppings they put them on the side. I don't know if it's because they don't have proper bowls to hold the ice cream right now due to being in a trailer. But they scooped two of the ice creams and then we waited another 5 minutes for the other two and then gave us all the toppings, so my niece and nephew had already eaten half their ice cream before they got the toppings. The ice creams are so huge and the bowls are so small it's hard to even put the toppings on. We kind of just dipped our ice cream in the toppings. They only had one non dairy option I believe it was a strawberry freeze. I could be wrong. My nieces and nephew enjoyed the ice cream but didn't finish it due to it being too large. Now I know, I will order Jr sizes next time and maybe bring bowls with us so we can properly put on the toppings. I love history and so this location was super cool. The pink booths, ornate ceiling and lighting, and even an old vault, all appear to be original to the 1920s building. It's very well preserved. You'd better come hungry. Superior's "brand" is enormous scoops. The ice cream itself is good but not the best on the planet, and the flavors are limited - but you go for the novelty of the size. The ambience is a little unfriendly since COVID - large "Do Not Sit" signs on the counters, seating blocked off, and not allowing inside eating even when the weather is over 100 degrees. The reason given is that they can't hire enough staff, but there could be other ways to accommodate customers, like stand-up tables and/or counter ordering. They're risking alienating long -term customers. But, hey, it's still fun. We live in a nearby town and sent some of our granddaughter's visiting softball team to the "local legend." Stopped by this place on our way back from the Sequoias. Arrived and found that they have no inside seating. Only take out. The inside of the place was pretty run down. Restrooms were available, however they were located in the storage area. The men's restroom you couldn't close the door and only one if three hinges were actually attached. It was an extremely hot day, with not being allowed to sit inside the thought was we would go across the street to the park. We swung through here on our way back from a trip to Tulare. We really wanted to eat lunch here, but they only do to go and we didn't wanna eat in our cars. So, we opted to just get ice cream here. I had been wanting to try this place out for years! My husbands grandfather grew up having Ice cream at this place so I was so excited to try it! I was a bit shocked to see how run down the place was. It was sad, because it seems to be a staple in the community. I figured they would keep up with the interior...just maintenance to make it look presentable and clean. I will say the scoops of ice cream are large! I opted for a sundae since they are portioned smaller. You definitely get your moneys worth here, portions are huge. I think the ice cream was good. It's not something I would drive an hour for again. I still enjoyed it and think it would of been more enjoyable sitting at a table not rushing to finish it so it didn't melt in the hot sun. This place was really cute. It was my first time there visiting family for a reunion so I was excited to see what the talk was about. Well, the customer service was okay but seemed off with the employees. So first we couldn't enjoy our ice cream inside due to Covid. I thought we were done with that but okay. We had to stand outside in 100-plus-degree weather smh. Also, the white lady was nice there but said we couldn't mix flavors....cool....but a few of my family members went to the black guy and he mixed the flavors. I don't understand. It's hard NOT to make it a black-and-white thing. But who knows right? As we stood there waiting on our party to order and get their ice cream, we were politely asked by the white lady to leave because we couldn't eat our ice cream inside due to Covid. Cool. It was signed indicating that. I understood...... Then before we left I noticed a full family of white people eating inside, happy, smiling, and enjoying their ice cream in air condition lol but us beautiful black people were outside in the heat sweating and uncomfortable strange right?
