I am a longstanding patron/customer at Star Nails in Silver Spring (including having my nails done there with my daughter for her wedding in 2019-6 years ago this month. Sometimes I schedule an appointment and sometimes I walk in, which has never been an issue and I have always been willing to wait my turn and have whomever is available do my nails. I always pay my bill and tip. Today I walked in and the managing individual, who knows me said "fill-ins?" And I said "yes please". She confirmed "have your own polish?" Which I responded "Yes" with a smile and took a seat. Over one hour and several walk-in pedicure and manicure patrons later I was again passed over and the woman who has done my nails the past few times actually approached me and apologized that she could not help me since she was doing pedicure for one( who came in after me) and said someone else would take care of me. Then a second person who came in after me and specifically asked if someone had time to give them a pedicure and manicure at which time the manager said" yes it will be about 10 minutes". Throughout the hour I waited quietly and patiently but was not addressed again until I finally stood up and said to the manager "Take Care". She responded, without looking up "Sorry". Just before that she begged two separate walk In people to sit or to come back saying it would only be a 10 minute wait for them. After researching long and hard for where I want to get my nails, I finally settled with Star nails! I called in before I went to see if I would be seen when I arrive and asked for the price of gel manicure ($32). The nail technician That did my nails was Annie. She was very nice and told me to take my time on choosing my color. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she offered many colors. She even sampled some colors for me to see if I liked the color. I choose two different colors OPI (22&72). I wanted an pink with light glitter. She applied two coats of 72 and one of 22. She told me that it will be 5 coats in total with base and top coat. She also told me that it might be a little thick and asked if that was okay. When she finished she asked me if this was the color I wanted and made sure it was the exact color. I also expected that it will cost a little more because I had two colors and an extra coat but it was still $32. Was very please, and will definitely recommend this place!! read more

This is a review for a gel manicure and pedicure service with Jenny on a Sunday around 4:20 pm. I recently moved to the area and wanted to find a place to get my nails done. I saw Star Nails during a trip to Giant and decided to bookmark it on Yelp despite an okay rating. I called ahead to see what time they close (5 pm) and decided that I would make it just in time for a pedicure. When I got there, I had my temperature taken, had to sign a waiver for COVID, and use hand sanitizer before using the pen - all precautionary steps I really appreciate. I did not have to wait to be seated in the pedicure station. Jenny started working on my feet right after I picked a color. The pedicure is what you would expect at any nail salon, but Jenny took the time to make sure my nail beds were cut and shaped. Jenny took care of the two ingrown toenails I had on each big toe. Not going to lie, it hurt. I didn't ask for it but appreciated that she went ahead and took care of it. *If you don't want this type of service, then tell them in advance.* I don't know how long my toes are going to last since it was a basic pedi, but I like the way they look. My toes took about 35-40 minutes to finish so I decided to do a gel manicure after double-checking that it was still okay since they were going to close soon. Jenny also did my hands and I love them! After I finally picked a color she did both hands in probably 30 minutes. I was out the door by 5:30ish. I didn't think it was too expensive: standard pedicure and gel manicure was $64 (without tip). I will definitely be coming back but will probably try a gel pedicure to ensure it's long-lasting. I will update my review to share how long both of these last! These stars are for Annie, who takes great care of my nails whenever I stop by for mani/ pedi. She does a fine job of prepping my nails for polish and always listens/ double-checks with me when I have small requests. The nail bar selection wasn't very appealing to me, however. I was looking for a bright red and could not find it to my shock (it's a classic & must-have color); I initially had to settle for a gloomier one until I asked Annie about it. I was so happy & satisfied when she brought over a cheerful red bottle. But back to the nail polishes: I hope to see other brands that have little to no chemicals in the future but I understand that this is not an organic nail salon; I'm just speaking of this so it may exist. As for atmosphere-- it was busy when I went & had to wait about 30 mins. at minimum but it was worth it because I got Annie! The air definitely smelled of chemicals and hurt my head. I did manage to adjust to it but it gave me a tiny migraine. I don't often get my nails done (& have recently been going to organic nail salons) but I was in a bind for an occasion hence I came. My mom recommended the place and as she said, it's clean, quick and neat work. My experience was even worse the next time. This time I scheduled with Linh, I waited an hour and a half past my appointment time. I even left with my nails unpainted because she didn't know how to use the chrome powder. She then said "well just keep the black" which was annoying because I didn't come there for black nail polish and not only that, the way she put the black nail polish on was so janky that I had to make her take it off. I highly recommend this place if you have plenty of time to waste. If not, do not go here. I have only gotten gel polish, eyebrows, and my upper lip wax here so my review is on those services only. I have been coming to Star Nails for 25 years. Although their prices have increased over the years, they consistently upgrade the salon. However, two weeks ago I had my nails done and two days later I had an infection under one nail. It got so bad I had to see a doctor who put me on 10 days of antibiotics. I went to the salon to tell them to redouble their efforts about sterilizing the equipment but the manager was very nonchalant and made no further comment than "sorry". Please be aware when they claim the nail equipment is sterilized because I've seen them just putting the clippers and nail files in a plastic bag and sealing them so it's unknown if they are sterilizing anything. I've never visited a single nail shop more than twice EXCEPT Star Nails. I always get it by Pauline or Tran (her viet name). She is the sweetest nail technician you will ever meet. She is very gentle and caring for her clients, she will make sure you will be satisfied with her work. Pauline knows exactly how and what you will want. It may get little pricey with all the extra stuff added on such as the jewels,beads and flowers but if she's amazing at all these advance decorations I ask for I am pretty confident she will be amazing at others. The only reason that I stopped visiting this salon frequently is because I moved out of the area. Management has been the same for since I began coming here and all of the employees are great. I came to this salon for years for basic mani/pedis. Their prices steadily increased over time. The last straw was charging $5 to remove a $45 gel manicure that I had just had done there 2 weeks ago. So they charge $45 for the gel powder manicure, $50 for a gel pedicure and then when you come back, scrape it off your nails and charge $10. The technician claimed she wasn't ripping off mail but she literally scraped the gel polish off of my toes. They nickel and dime and now have a manager walking around rushing them. I had to ask TiTi to remove the polish from all over my cuticles last time. Her male manager was standing over her rushing her. Finding a new salon where I get my money's worth. read more

Love the place! I discovered it at the beginning of summer. The only person I make my appointments with is Pauline. Her hands are baby soft, they work magic, and she's such a sweet person (I hate going to salons and just sitting there; I like when techs talk to me--Pauline and I always strike up a conversation). I've only gotten gel and they always come out flawless and last minimum 2 weeks -- if my nails didn't grow fast, they could last a full 3 weeks. I'm only giving a 4 star rating because I went to get my gel removed one day and Pauline wasn't there. The lady had soft hands and she was nice, but she damaged my nails by scraping off small chunks of my nail but the gel polish. She was rushing; If she'd let the acetone sit longer on my nails, the removal would've been better. It's been about 3 weeks and my nails are still trying to repair themselves read more

The tools the nail techs use are sterilized and look new. The business looked clean. I had a pedicure and gel nails. The pedicure wasn't anything special but it wasn't anything to complain about. The nail service was fine. The tech took her time. My nails look good. My only critique is that I wish the woman who did my pedir cute took more time on the massage aspect of both the pedicure and the manicure. They do put plastic in the bowl for the pedi. The thing is that my nails never really look as great as I think they should. I have used other salons with a better result.
