This company and owner are wonderful. He came and fixed our air conditioner for a quarter of price that others quoted us. He even offered to come back every year to clean the a/c unit for free. We are a single mother homeless shelter and we dont have a lot of money to fix things and he saved us over 900.00 compared to the two other companies that we called. I have been using Star since 2010. Shaun is wonderful. Our family was going through some very hard times. As many people have and are still. Well our AC went out during a heat wave . Had a really good experience overall. Realized middle of the night that the a/c cut off. So I called Star at 8 and they had someone at my place by 9. Oh and the temp forecast for the day was 105, so I was really nervous that it would take days to fix. Nope, Star had it up and running in 20 mins. I am beyond pleased with this company! Called and asked for service on a Saturday, they were at my home within hours! Last time AC broke took the OTHER guy 5 days to get here in 100 plus degree heat! Serviceman was very pleasant and kind. Did his best to keep it to a minimum service call, but the stupid AC had another agenda! But once issue was found, he wrapped up, told me the 50 cent part I needed for he did not have the exact fuse (not his fault, it is a unique system, and the last guy had same issue with same fuse), he wrapped things up and gave me a very reasonable bill. I run construction projects and without a doubt be using this company for my projects needs. Anyone who lives in the Central Valley knows how much not having air conditioning sucks, especially in this past weeks heatwave. This was a horrible experience. I had called because I needed my units serviced since the house was vacant for 18 mos. while it was being remodeled. The technician was polite and useless. He immediately recommended replacement of one of the systems before even pretending to diagnose any problems. The unit worked fine when I bought the house in Nov of 2015. I moved back in this month. No a/c from one unit. He told me he'd need to run a pressure test and try to find the leak. Took less than 5 minutes and told me there was zero pressure. That the line was probably missing. Asked where the crawl space was, when I showed him, he asked me if I had a flash light. Then he told me there is no room in the crawl space and that he wants to move the unit and run a new line? Even after I explained that wasn't an option. Really? I've had at least three different sub-contractors working in the crawl space, a plumber, electrician, handyman, and cable installer. He didn't even pull off one of the units cover. No service, no meaningful problem solving. I paid $150.00 for nothing. Another place came out. Looked at it and diagnosed the problem immediately. Will never use Star Mechanical again. read more

Poor installation caused water damage to our ceiling. We were told it was our fault, it was not. They fixed most everything at the direction of our Contractor, but we're still out the materials and labor cost for the ceiling. Poor customer service, very argumentative, and very disrespectful. I had a friend's friend come figure out what was wrong with our AC, that took 2 weeks for him to even figure out what the issue was. We figured it was a blown fuse that just needed to be replaced. He said it wasn't and our whole condenser needed to be replaced ($1,200). After the second week of 90+ degree weather I decided to call Star Refrigeration. I was afraid it would cost an arm and a leg but figured if I was going to have the work done it should be warrantied work and by a specialist. I called Shawn and he came out within a few hours. He was COMPLETELY honest and basically told us our "friend's friend" had no idea what he was doing and told us it was our fuse. It took Shawn 30 minutes to complete the work!! We had problems with our unit going out during times of over 100 degrees, I made the mistake of calling another local service that I never could get a hold of for service. I went online for a local Manteca service and with still feeling leary about calling someone and not being taken care of fairly.. I called "Star" and immediately was called back for an appt. for the next day as requested. Shawn showed up and listened carefully to our problem and was right on it! He is very knowledgeable to all systems and was friendly and explained what the issue was and as we listened to what was some problems with the unit, he also explained how one inexpensive part may have one more summer left on it and asked if we wanted take care of it now to save any future problems with it. We replaced the parts as needed and he also saved us money in the end by taking care of any possible issues that were to come. I can comfortably recommend him to my clients as well, I am a realtor and always looking for reliable company's to refer out and he now is one of my company's to refer! In March 2019 I purchased a replacement HVAC system for my dying 17 year old unit. Unfortunately, in this case, I did not practice my own self-imposed rules for handling my personal business transactions. I am a Senior Citizen and of the 'old school' method of doing business...I believe both parties should be upfront and honest. Its a shame that only one party practices this method of business practice in many situations. Mike, was a rather high pressure sales person whose only interest was making a commission for himself whereas I feel both parties should benefit from a sale. I believe I did benefit just not in the manner I was lead to believe I would. I've been trying to get a copy of the bid and invoice of the HVAC + duct work replacement for which I was agreeing to purchase. Also asked that the thermostat be replaced as I retiree, someone is always home and a programable thermostat if unnecessary. Neither Shawn, the owner of Star Mechanical or the sales person, Mike have bothered to provide what should have been an automatic function for both of them. Not only did I not get what I agreed to purchase, their failure to respond to my requests tells me they have no intention of doing so. Mike has ignored my multiple requests and Shawn has ignored my one request. Given the treatment I have received, I would not be honest if I gave them either a good referral or rating. When I came home from work the day of installation, they had installed a TempStar unit, not an Amana as I had agreed to purchase. I attempted to contact Mike, as he was my contact person, has not bothered to return my calls. Also, I was assured that my utility bill would be lower but that is not the case. I can't help but feel if I had gotten which I agreed to at the purchase, my utility bill would have been lesser. Its a shame that people of this type feel the need to take advantage of a client not work openly and honestly manner. And, I feel is the likely the way they would prefer to be treated if they were the client. Anyone choosing to do business with Mike or Shawn, my recommendation is to exercise caution as their outlook of doing business my be from two different perspectives. read more

I contacted Shawn and scheduled an appointment to have him come look at my heater. He came out and it ran a jumper wire and it began working fine but once he removed the wire it would not get hot anymore. So I called him and had another tech come out the next day. The tech came out and what ever he did it worked during that time as well but once again as soon as he left it began malfunctioning again, so I called Shawn back and he said he would have to charge me another fee to come out. I was a little hesitant about that seeing that all this happened within 3 days and I'm paying for a diagnostic fee/service call which is what I paid for the first time and I'm still without heat. I still agreed and he said that he would be out the next day. I work nights and get off early in the mornings so I explained to him I would just wait stay up and not up to sleep. I waited and waited and waited but no Shawn or call. I called him no answer I sent text messages no answer. My family and I was left with no heat on some of the coldest days of this year. I picked Star Mechanical based on the reviews but sometimes the reviews don't tell the full story. Nice guy but follow thru was disappointing. read more

THIS IS THE WORST COMPANY EVER!!! This must be Shawn's evil twin with the same name! I had them assigned by a Home Warranty Co. I had a previous diagnosis & it seemed cost effective to use the War Co and they assigned Shawn. It has been 2 months, they had the diagnosis handed to them on a silver platter. The tech I had come out 1st, said the motor was bad, in danger of blowing up the entire HVAC unit so he turned off the master switch. Shawn said the only problem was the switch was off. DUH!! So when the system still was not working, he refused to talk to me and said he would be out in 2 days & the tenant did not need to be there. I told the tenant to be there so Shawn could test the unit inside to see if it was working - remember, he checked it from the roof and could not tell it was not working. Shawn did not show up at all on the assigned day, rescheduled it for the following Monday, 10-N. Having to go thru the war co., it was confirmed THREE times. I called them at N, and Star said they were not due till N-2 p.m. I am fling a complaint with the Contractor's License Board against this company. My tenant has now had to stay home from work 2 full days for Star to do absolutely nothing. read more
