The sign pulled us in, parking is tight due to amount of patrons- LOL. We were first-timers so new to the ordering process, but once inside we were filled in. You grab one tray per group, grab beverages and order your actual entrée at the end of counter. You can hit a QR Code while in-line to view menu or look at giant board along the counter. So many choices and only so much even I can eat. The line outside is misleading as it moves fast, once you order you grab a table. There never seemed to not be a table available so no worries and no need to send someone in to hold. Helpful Hint - Use the restroom when passing in-line as getting back to it requires going back past hungry customers waiting to order. Super friendly Staff and the Owner (Wife) is on the cash register. Super nice and very pleasant. Good Prices, Great Food, Great Service & for sure some of the best pancakes that I have had !!! read more

The ordering experience is kind of unique. You walk in, grab a tray, your first drink, and then order and pay in the line. Then you go find a place to sit, and the wait staff will bring you your food and refills. Whoever the lady was that greeted us and checked us out was SO nice, friendly, and funny. French toast was delicious. Besides timing it right cause they get BUSY! The only "complaint" is the hash browns/home fries were a little weird/different. They didn't taste bad but I also didn't love them. Overall: great experience! read more

Stack'em High Pancakes is a local breakfast spot in Kill Devil's Hill, NC. There's plenty of free parking in the lot in front of the restaurant. There's also plenty of seating indoors, good for big groups. The ambiance can be described as casual and rustic. They take tap to pay, but there's a % charge for all credit transactions. The service was unique to accommodate the busy flow. All parties grab one tray to pick their drinks and if they'd like to get anything from the grab-n-go section (granola, cereal, juice). Then, you order from the waitress in the front. She was so kind and asked everyone what they had going on for the day. We did stand in line for about 20 minutes but it went by quickly as we watched the cooks in the open kitchen. They have a relatively simple breakfast menu that can be customized to add sides or toppings. Everything is reasonably priced for the portion size. We got a berry berry waffle, which had the blueberries in the batter and strawberries on top & the chocolate monkey pancakes with bacon which had the chocolate chips in the batter and banana on top. The food was fresh made and delicious. I'd recommend coming here if you're looking for a good, hearty breakfast while in OBX with great customer service! read more

This is our third time here over the years and always a hit. Omelettes were very cheesy but yummy and biscuits are a non-negotiable. Hash browns are a staple as well. Blue monkey pancakes were yummy as well. Service was great and never went with an empty coffee cup. The wait was about an hour but wasn't very crowded inside and pretty quiet. Come early to avoid the wait (which it's well worth!). You pick your drinks when you first get inside then order at the end of the counter. Seat yourself and they bring your food out to you. I got the high stack of pancakes with eggs and sausage - there's a reason pancakes are in the name of this restaurant - they are to die for!! Definitely the best pancakes I have ever had. Super fluffy and moist, melt in your mouth delicious with butter and maple syrup. We also tried the ham and cheese omelet, which had a generous portion of ham and flavorful. The hashbrowns could have used more seasoning but the texture was crispy and with ketchup were perfect. Service was attentive and they kept our coffee cups filled. Inside was bustling but cozy diner feel. read more

I'm conflicted on my review for Stack'em High. I don't love their system for taking orders but on the other hand it allows them to throughput a pretty high number of orders. One issue we ran into on our first visit was people who stood in line, staring at the menu for 10-20 minutes, somehow still didn't have their order ready to go when they got to the register - causing the process to take FAR longer than it should. On the small scale that's only a minor annoyance but when the line is out the door each of those adds up considerably and causes it to take a while. On top of that I honestly found the food to just be "fine" in terms of the beach breakfast place which is a well-tread type of establishment at the beach. It was certainly good but in no way did I find it special or above average. We did go back a bit earlier another day when the crowd was much lower and our experience was considerably improved. The food remained good, not exceptional. Given the obvious popularity and the simple fact that they do have Gluten Free options I'm just barely giving 4 stars. read more

ONE STAR "Stack 'em High" does not refer to pancakes. It refers to how the customers are jammed into the restaurant . If you enjoy standing in line for breakfast almost as much as you enjoy eating breakfast, then Stack 'em High in Nags Head may be your personal paradise. The adventure begins with a long line just to get inside. Once admitted, you are given a tray--one tray per family--and directed into a cafeteria-style line. Why? Nobody seems to know. The only thing you put on the tray is a juice or a soft drink. But apparently this is a critical part of the Stack 'em High experience, so you dutifully shuffle along with your tray like you're awaiting parole. Eventually, you reach the end of the cafeteria rail. And THAT is where you order your food. From whom? One guy. Just one. There were easily more than 100 people waiting, and one solitary man was taking everyone's orders. Talk about a bottleneck. The Panama Canal has fewer traffic problems. Once you finally get your order in, you're handed a number. Then the waitresses circulate through the dining room carrying plates, attempting to match your breakfast with your assigned number. It's essentially air traffic control, but with bacon. To be fair--and the "fare" was "fair"--the restaurant itself is old but clean. The waitstaff was kind and pleasant. The prices were about what you'd pay at a real diner. And the food? Fine. Just fine. Eggs were eggs. Ham was ham. Hash browns were hash browns. But let's be honest: Can ham and eggs ever really rise to the level of exceptional? No. Especially when it takes 1 hour and 20 minutes from the time you first get in line until the hash browns finally hit the table. ONE HOUR AND TWENTY MINUTES. For breakfast. At that point, I had become emotionally attached to the number on my ticket. I had aged noticeably. I had contemplated eating the tray. And I was beginning to wonder if the chickens had actually been raised to order. The final entertainment was the sign regarding tipping. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. After standing in line, carrying a tray for no discernible reason, waiting behind 100 people while one man takes orders, receiving a number, and then waiting for your food to be matched to that number... Let's just say the tipping sign struck me as ambitious. So, Stack 'Em High gets ONE STAR from me. Not because the food was terrible. Not because the place was dirty. Not because the staff wasn't nice. But because there is simply no conceivable universe in which ham, eggs and hash browns are worth an hour and twenty minutes of my life. Stack 'Em High: Come for the breakfast. Stay because you're still waiting in line. read more

For breakfast or brunch, it's hard to beat this place. Unlike traditional breakfast chains, it has a fast food/cafeteria style setup, where you get your drinks first, then you order your dishes at the cashier, and then sit at the table where a server will bring out your order. The portions were enormous, and the pricing is more than competitive when compared to other chain options. The table and seating were fairly average, as to reflect their no frills standard. However, the service provided by the staff was way beyond average. They made sure all your needs were met, and willing to make things right if any issues came up with your orders. Don't miss this place for breakfast or brunch when in the Outer Banks area! read more

I was in the area and wanted some breakfast so I stopped by for a bite. It was interesting because it is set up like a cafeteria style restaurant where you take a tray and go down the line to pick up your drinks and place your order. Wow!! Really cool friendly VERY BUSY HOPPING PLACE!!! Line out the door to get in. As a "single", I was asked to sit in an area with only two tops leaving the other tables for large parties, I understand this, but dang I'm all alone over here LOL!! Still received excellent service. Restaurant is loud, music, conversation, rolling carts, dishes banging, so if you want somewhere quiet this isn't a good choice, especially for some autistic children very over stimulating. That being said, this is a really hip and cool place! The staff seem to really enjoy their jobs and they work together teamwork!!!! read more

The food is decent, but the ordering process is horribly mismanaged. The line is consistently around the corner, yet half the tables are empty. This is a very unique place. You get your drinks, order your food, then post for everything. Then you find a seat and they will bring your food to you. Cashier or whoever runs the front the owner maybe? Very nice lady. She remembered my order after only one visit. It was so good that's why I came back the second day. You go in pick up a tray like a highschool cafeteria and pick your order (alot to choose from). I love to add fruit into the pancakes. The biscuits and gravy was the highlight for me. I picked up takeout from here on a Sunday morning around 9am because of the great reviews. I will say the most annoying part was the small parking lot for such a busy place (and no street parking is allowed), so I circled and waited for about 10-15 minutes for a spot to open up. Then everyone (regardless of doing take-out or eating in) has to wait in the same line to order at the register (I probably waited about 35 mins to order), and it took about another 10 minutes for my food to be ready. I ordered a 2 egg platter with hash browns and toast, and a short stack of pancakes with chocolate chips and strawberries. The pancakes were thin, but so fluffy and delicious. I also got to try some of my husband's biscuit and that was the right amount of buttery for me and not dry. I wish I had a location close to my house so I could order from there again! read more

What a gem of a place. Get there early in season! I didn't realize it would be cafeteria style with ordering at the end of the line. The cashier/waitress was wonderful on an early morning taking time with each party. She gave me great advice on getting grits with my breakfast (definitely get them! They're the real deal! ) and commiserated with me on rye toast being the only choice with corned beef hash. Everything was so good that I ate myself silly. Corned beef hash is made in house and delicious. Rye was thick sliced and tasty. Service once I was at the table was good. Even though I ate way too much I'm working out how to go again tomorrow! read more

Believe it! The Yelpers have spoken the truth. This location is amazing! The staff is super friendly, helpful and responsive. The food is cooked to order, served right away and is a cut above the other local places in the OBX. There's a method to handling the large crowds! It's an organized line and it works. Seating can accommodate large parties to single diners. Great atmosphere. You walk in to a "cafeteria type line." We were instructed to grab "one tray" for our twosome. It's only to hold your drinks. The line has a large choice of beverages: juice, coffee, tea and sodas. You place your order with the friendly cashier, pay and she gives you a table number. The food is brought over to you, served hot. There are lots of servers pouring coffee and tea refills. The staff was great! Ask for a takeout box because the portions are huge. A "side" of corn beef hash can serve a few people. Take home the extra because this was so good, real potato and beef. The pancakes have a scoop of butter and were so good. The 3 stack was more than I could finish. Table syrup was sweet and gave the stack a nice taste. As locals, we will certainly return. We did come at 7:30a on a Sunday morning because I did read about the rush. read more

I expected just another beaxh breakfast spot- full due to demand and not necessarily quality Little did I know this spot is a local treasure. It was busy don't get me wrong, the way this restaurant operates is different from most. Customers line up at the door and single file through to order at the cashier. You can pick up juices, freshly brewed coffee, trays and utensils. Menus are nonexistent and instead all items are written on several chalkboards. Granola, omelets, French toast, pancakes, Belgian waffles, etc! There is something (if not multiple things) for everyone! Prices were very decent. Service was great and since we were there on Mother's Day there was plenty of organization and workers showing people to open tables. We both opted for the French toasts. They had topping options like coconut flakes, fresh fruit, choc chips, pecans to name a few. The fresh fruit was plentiful on our orders and the French toast was a great portion- we might have even been able to split one order. The maple syrup was the perfect drizzle on top of a golden fluffy toast! We also ordered the loaded hash browns to share. The hashbrowns were also a shareable order with plenty cheese and bacon on top. I don't know what they did to the actual potatoes but they kept their consistency while being crunchy on the outside it felt as if it was prepared in a skillet. This spot is 1000% worth your patronage while in Kill Devil Hills. Delicious breakfast guaranteed to fuel your beach day or any other adventure. We were full for a while! read more

Not impressed. Pancakes were undercooked..raw 8n the center. Service excellent and friendly.

It's been four years since I've visited OBX and I've been looking forward to eating at Stack'em High whenever we returned. I was a little worried the food wouldn't live up to my memories. But it did! Still so, so good! We arrived soon after they opened. The staff were all very friendly and reminded us how to order before being seated. I ordered the Greek omelet with a short stack of pancakes. We learned they are closed on Wednesdays (even in season) so be aware of that if you plan to eat there. We didn't have a wait to order when we arrived just after they opened; we drove past about 10:30am and noticed the line to get in was halfway down the outside of the restaurant. (The wait is worth it!) I love the quotes that make up the decor of the dining room. The wait staff was great about refilling our drinks. The coffee was wonderful. The food was brought to our table within about 10 minutes after we ordered. We'll be back 1-2 more times before heading home! read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this place! When we first entered and saw the line, I was skeptical. The ordering process began with you standing in a line to order your food like a college cafeteria. You can grab things al a carte, or you can check out the menu while you get to the cashier. The staff was friendly and super helpful. They were quick to accommodate guests, clean up plates, and refill water glasses. The ambiance was classic beach breakfast. My husband got cereal and the chunky monkey peanut better and banana pancakes. He devoured it. I ordered a monster biscuit (egg and cheese). I ended up deconstructing it and eating it like an omelet and putting strawberry jam on the biscuit. Lastly. We had to try their granola made in house. Hands down the best granola I have EVER had. I will go back for the fruit parfait alone. Don't skip that granola! read more
