We are locals. We eat here periodically for breakfast. Sad to say, it's a hit and a miss. Mostly miss. We ate there for breakfast Sunday. The biscuits crumbled in your hand trying to put butter on them. The eggs were okay but cold by the time they came out. The sausage patty was like leather. My granddaughter had biscuit with sausage gravy and the gravy was cold, literally again like it had been sitting. The three of us came away disappointed. Stopped in about 11 AM on a Monday. Seated right away and I knew what I wanted so made the server's job easy. But, be warned vegetarians! Do not order the hashbrowns or anything else cooked on the grill (ask); I could taste the bacon/ham residue and it almost made me gag. My fault really; I shoulda asked or just skipped them altogether. The portions are large enough that I had to plenty to eat without contaminated hashbrowns. Additionally, I got the grits and biscuit; both were good, as I expected. The biscuit in particular was outstanding, and huge! If you have a vegan diet, skip this place; vegetarians can squeak by. Classic greasy-spoon/diner vibe with some seats at a counter and tables ranging from a deuce to a four-top. "Southern-style diner-like brunch food in Nags Head" In "the Food Lion strip mall" on Croatan Hwy, not far from the Fresh Market, sits this little spot, just open until 2pm. As you might guess from the name, they really specialize in breakfast-style foods, and specifically southern emphases on this. We came on a Monday at just after noon and were able to get a table quickly. It has a bright, clean diner-like feel, though definitely beach-themed paintings, and the staff are friendly. The menu matched what you'd expect from a diner in the south-- lots of egg and grits dishes, hash browns, biscuits, etc., as well as some sandwiches. I ordered the crab cake sandwich with hashbrowns, and a house salad. My daughter ordered corned beef hash, a biscuit, a bowl of grits with cheese, and a sweet tea. House salad came out super fast-- within just a couple of minutes. It was fine-- the lettuce was just OK (iceberg but not wilted) but there were bell pepper slices, cucumber, tomato, etc., to make it a little nicer. Our mains came out maybe 10 or so minutes later. The crab cake was a little smaller than I might have guessed, and in a perfectly shaped patty that looked like it may have been something bought as frozen from one of the grocery stores nearby. Still, it tasted pretty good, and came on a nice bun with lettuce, tomato, and a sauce kind-of like thousand island dressing. The hash browns were good-- fried well. They had an interesting smoky flavor-- maybe they were cooked along with some meat or meat grease. My daughter's food was all pretty good. Again, the corned beef hash looked like what one might get from a can, but it tasted good, and the biscuit and grits were very good. The tea was unexpectedly not as sweet as one would think, but maybe they're accommodating northerners. Price was fair for a tourist town. Note-- you take the bill up to the front to pay. Overall, it's decent diner food. If you're looking for upscale fancy food, this is not the place to go. But if you're looking for a decent diner with southern foods, this is a good option. read more

For the last 10 years, My family and I usually make Grits Grill a regular stop every time we are in the OBX. Never again. The last few years the service has gone WAY downhill. This time sealed the deal that we will take our money elsewhere. We entered and put in our name for a party of 8. There are many toys for purchase at the check out desk, so naturally the kiddos in our party immediately went there to look and ogle the toys (isn't that why they are out there?). The manager was visibly irritated that we were taking up space, and sharply told us we need to go outside and wait to be called. We wrangled the kiddos and sat outside on the benches. When seated, our server couldn't smile if her life depended on it. Well, at least for us. She was pleasant and jovial and accommodating to the tables around us. At our table she was short and stone faced and it was clear that for some reason, our party was an annoyance and an inconvenience to her. She was short with every response and very unpleasant. I would listen to her talk to other tables and it was a stark difference. We are a friendly, patient group with manners so I'm really not sure what was going on. She just slapped our checks down and didn't come back. I surprised my mom with a birthday breakfast here and she absolutely loved it. It's a cute, retro diner with all of your typical breakfast options and then some. They specialize in grits, so you'll find many variations throughout the menu. My mom chose Shrimp and Grits as her meal and it was DIVINE. She mentioned it was the best I think she had ever had! The grits here are TO DIE FOR. They're so good. I'm dairy free so had to opt for no cheese but they were still the best I'd ever had. Every one of us six enjoyed our meal and the service provided. You may have to turn a blind eye to a couple of cleanliness issues, but the pros certainly outweigh the cons here! The seafood omelette smelled strongly of ham, so you knew what was cooked right before. Everything seems to be cooked on-a shared griddle, where the patrons in one part of the restaurant can observe. The hash brows were soft and forgettable. The ambiance is standard for a tourist area, and they helpfully sell stuffed gifts for kids as well as beach bags. Note, while my partner ate, I did not as I have a severe food allergy, which they couldn't accommodate. Hit Grits and Grill on our drive from Duck down to the Ferry to Ocracoke. Did not have to wait since it was off season. They have a sign on the door warning you to only send one person in for your party and the rest have to wait outside. This is due to the fact they don't have any room inside for people to wait. Popular with golfers in the morning. We enjoyed our breakfast, my wife said the grits we spot on. Their pancakes we ok. They do not put ketchup or syrup out on the tables, be sure to ask for it when you order as our server did not return with it until my breakfast was luke warm. On 5 15 25 my family and I ate at Grits Grill as we were spending the night in the outer banks. This was one of the nastiest places I have ever eaten. The floor was filthy, one bathroom was working it was filthy. Flies were flying around our food while we were trying to eat. I got a chefs salad I could not even eat the whole thing the ham was extremely fatty. My wife got shrimp and grits and hardly ate any of it. I would not recommend this place!! read more
