Not many places are open in the winter months especially when the temperatures dip below 40. We wanted a late breakfast early lunch and pancakes were calling our name. Another thing to note is most places that are typically a local favorite are closed in Tuesdays. We drove into their massive lot and didn't see any cars. Yes, it was 11:00am but they didn't close until 12:30p. Typically this family run restaurant does a cafeteria style line but off season it's table service. Yeah for us! Food was cooked made to order and SO delicious. I opted for a breakfast quesadilla and a side of pancakes(2 for the senior option). The salsa on the quesadilla was super tasty hint of garlic and fresh tomatoes. The super short stack of pancakes went to my belly quickly, hope I got photos. Service was spot on. Line out the door when we got there around 900-ish on a Sunday morning on our way back home. The line gives your large group a little time to figure out what you want (the menu is on the wall) in this cafeteria style establishment. Bathrooms located on your way out (one entrance and one exit for the patrons). No descriptives other than the food was fine and the service was fine (I can sympathize with the straight faces in the heart of a rush). PSA: for those of you with nut allergies, part of the secret sauce is Vanilla Nut Butter. It's in the batter and despite the "it's up to you risk" suggestion from the staff, we decided not to. Compared to the other Stack 'Em High location (in Kill Devil Hills, next to Bob's), this one in Kitty Hawk is a let down. Service and ambience are good, but the food here is not the same quality. The pancakes were thin and chewy. The French toast was thinner. The bacon and sausage were floppy and pale. The cheese grits were a huge upset because the grits at the other Stack 'em High location are the BEST cheese grits I've ever had. And the hashbrowns here do not look/taste fresh like at the other location. The difference is night & day, and the family agreed we won't come back to this location. It is cafeteria style which I'm fine with that process for busy breakfast establishments. Not down with cafeteria quality food though. Which under the circumstances is what you get here mostly. Wow! I've never come here because I didn't think they would be able to do gluten free. The joke was on me, they did a great job, I had the Greek omelette and a side of bacon... perfectly cooked, flavorful with perfect distribution of ingredients. Ordering and paying for the food went well, however I ordered first and didn't receive my food until 15 minutes AFTER my friends were done eating their food. They all ordered differing kinds of omelets while I had the french toast. I cannot express the level of disappointment I had while here. It took somewhere between 40 and 50 minutes to receive my breakfast of French toast, eggs and potatoes. The French toast was good, but the rest of the meal was not worth the wait. Order came out wrong multiple times and the food is just not good. It is over priced and the food seems like some of its old especially the biscuits and gravy. They took the order wrong on multiple orders and tried to charge more because of it. Instead of fixing it they came over with the receipt to point out what the person who took the order messed up. I've seen the line out the door several times and thought this place has to be good...well I was wrong. First they were not busy at all-so don't go thinking they were in a hurry and my food came out cold... 2 eggs over light-came out over medium and they were "dry burnt" like when you cook in a non stick pan on high heat with no butter/oil. Hashbrowns-not sure how one screws up hashbrowns but here it's possible! They honestly tasted like sliced canned potatoes they had a wetness inside and a firmer than normal texture like you would expect from canned potatoes. No crispiness just soggy and I saw seasoning but couldn't taste it and after adding a ton of salt I still couldn't taste them. Sausage links were so blond I honestly thought they would have been raw in the center. Now onto the pancakes-they had to be good right? Nope nope nope not sure I would even really call them pancakes they-no fluffy texture at all. They were filled with tons of holes and had a chewy like texture to them with a cornbread mealy consistency. The syrup...umm just bring your own. BUT the bread was outstanding! Thick cut, crispy and toasted to perfection! The staff was over the top awesome, attentive, courteous BUT the 150 mile an hour español conversation that went on for the entire meal between the staff was loud and unending. read more

We have always gone to the KDH location, but our rental was right across the street from the Kitty Hawk location and we were wondering why the ratings were so drastically different, and now we know after getting both this week. Quality of food is definitely not as good at Kitty Hawk. This is most likely due to a younger staff. The well seasoned staff and cooks appear to be at KDH. Some differences we noticed, for the chocolate chip pancakes, they just put chocolate chips on top of the regular pancakes, instead of sprinkled into the pancakes at KDH, which makes for a more well balanced way pancake. Additionally, the biscuits and gravy were made differently and not good. So I will be going to KDH location from now on. read more

Family owned businesses is always a plus, loved supporting local busy, you enter and at first it was a little confusing; cafeteria style entrances, but once you ordered your food and get to your table, the food came pretty quickly. We got the western omelette, bacon and cheese omelette, French toast with 2 egg and bacon, 2 kid breakfast...they were all really good. It's a cafeteria-style restaurant where you get your drinks on one tray per family/group and order your food with the cashier. They then bring your food to your table. The line to order was constantly long, but moved so you didn't really have to wait too long. The "busboy" (actually a very pleasant & efficient sprite older gentleman) was very quick at cleaning the tables once vacated in order to make room for the next customers. We didn't have to wait long for our order to be served. The pancakes were delicious, as was the French toast, the Scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly, as was the bacon!
