We got the #2 combo......eggs were beat to death on my plate and my wifes sunny side up eggs weren't even close. I ate here recently and was very disappointed with my meal. The server at the front was very kind and professional (which is why this is a 2 star rather than 1) but everything was downhill from there The coffe was lukewarm and watery and over all undrinkable. I ordered the grits bowl with scrambled eggs. The eggs were ok but the grits were horrible, without a doubt they were left over from the day before. The veggies were slimy and barely warm. Even the biscuits were bad - they were flat and cold. This one is gross. We went there because the one in Kill Devil Hills is packed. The sausage gravy tastes like it's from a can and I needed to use a butter knife to cut the biscuits. My wife's pancake had to be ground in syrup to get any taste. Even the fountain drinks tasted off. Never again. Will wait in line next time. I now understand why parking lot was empty. Not sure why this location has lower reviews than the other Stack'em high in kill Devil hills. The menu is smaller but the pancakes tasted the same and I actually enjoyed not having to wait in a giant line and eat in a very loud, crowded space. If you want a more engaging staff and larger menu go to the other location but be prepared to get there early. We were happy with our breakfast here! read more

Ok so I've been coming here for years... I thought I reviewed this spot before but I guess not so here it goes. Stack Em is my go to breakfast on the OBX. I am in love with their pancakes. It is thin, buttery, sweet, yet light and fluffy. For me that is my kind of pancakes! The hash brown is real potatoes, chopped and sauté. This place rocked! I've noticed people complaining about ordering being confusing. Well, sure, it was DIFFERENT than most places, but hardly confusing. You walk in, get in line and the first stop is where you pick out your beverage. The person working there will hand you your drink and then you move on past some yummy dessert-like creations and fresh fruit bowls. After that, you're on to picking up your silverware and ordering the rest of your food at the cash register, where you will also pay for the entire thing. After you pay, the cashier hands you a card with your order number on it and tells you what tables are open, directing you in the general direction of one of them. You put the card on the table and your food shows up in about 10-15 minutes. This entire process seemed pretty simple to my girlfriend and I, and it was over pretty quickly. The food!!! THE FOOD!!! First off, like others have said, you NEED to spend time looking at the menu because they have SO MUCH here. I got a short stack of pancakes with strawberries on top and sausage and an egg on the side. My girlfriend got a waffle. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious, and the fruit was cooked JUST RIGHT - it had a fresh taste but was WARM which went better with the warm food. The sausage was probably the best sausage I've had at a restaurant - you could see flecks of red and black pepper in it. The egg was cooked over-easy and done perfectly as such - slightly creamy inside - the gooey kind. The waffle was BIG, extremely filling and fluffy on the inside with the absolute perfect crisp on the outside. Everything about it was just the way you'd want it. On the premises, they have a gift shop where you can buy pancake mix. I did that and I hope it turns out as well as their pancakes. Oh, and if the line looks long, don't worry about it, as they are VERY fast at getting it down. This place is good, but it's expensive and has an inefficient ordering method. You wait in a long slow line...maybe not always long, but always pretty slow. It's a cafeteria style line where you grab some stuff for your tray and everything else you order at the register. Grab your silverware and head to your table. While you will wait a long time for your food. When your food comes you will often realize that your juice is empty or someone needs a side of bacon. Is it worth going back up to the register and standing in line? Do you ask a waitress for extra items as they speed by? I'm never sure. When your food is brought it is what you expect and the quality is fine. They should really just ditch the whole chow line concept and offer waiter service at the table. They already have the staff running food and you already have to wait a long time so I don't think the chow line adds anything but frustration that you are paying so much to do half the work yourself. The *only* reason I can justify the chow lines is that I think they can cram more people in the restaurant since you are waiting twice (once to order, a second time for your food). So, to harp on this point one more time, let me explain how a chow line is supposed to work...you wait in line, you get your food, but then you get to eat immediately. You don't wait in line and then wait just as long at the table. That's just stupid. If you're going to make us wait that much cut the prices in half. Don't come here for a quick breakfast. I really do like the food, the people and the wide menu selection. It's a cool place. I guess come off hours or out of season. ? There is no reason to wait in line during the peak season. It's not that good for the price you pay in your time and your cash. read more

However, I came in on a Saturday as we were leaving town, and the service was sluggish. It felt like they are short staffed. Two bussers and two servers just didn't seem to cut it. I am giving them five stars for the simple fact that the food was absolutely delicious. We were there later in the morning, so we were the only folks in there, but I imagine that if it were in season and earlier in the morning that it would be crazy busy. From other reviews I've read that is the case and sometimes their service can be sluggish, but I am not considering that because that was not my experience at the time I visited (December). Once you go in you go through a line and get a tray and your drink and then you order at the register and pay ahead of time. Then you take a number and go to a table. I didn't really understand this process or why a tray was needed, because it wasn't like we were carrying our own food out. Maybe it was different because of us being there later in the day? I feel like this is a place that locals will definitely go, because of the feel of it. This definitely isn't a fancy breakfast place, but you will not be disappointed with the food! Both of the locations for this restaurant have lines out the door and around the building. After eating there I certainly know why! The ordering is cafeteria style in the sense that you get your drink and any small cold add ins, decide what you want and then order at a register. You are then given a number and the food is delivered to you! I got chocolate chip pancakes with sausage and an egg. It was so good. The pancakes were light and they did not skimp on the chocolate chips...just how I like it! My husband had the clam hash which was recommended with eggs and toast. He loved the hash and said it was different and had great flavor. They have everything from pancakes, to different hashes, omelets and grits. Everyone was so friendly and personal. You can tell it is a family run business through and through. If we find ourselves at OBX again, and I'm sure we will, we will be back! read more

Full disclosed we thought we were going to the larger KDH location but we hadn't been in years and pulled in thinking they are the same. They may be the same name, not sure about ownership. They are definitely not the same!. They're definitely different. This location has a much smaller menu. No specialty items. No breakfast burritos. Service is spotty. Don't drink any water that isn't bottled - typical unfiltered OBX water, horrid. The regular menu limited and very uninspired, boring. We decided to order the only special they had, a breakfast quesadilla. It wasn't decent but we'll make sure we go to the KDH location from here on out. The Kill Devil location has breakfast specials, fancy pancakes and waffles. This place was on omelettes, bacon,plain pancakes. Not what we wanted. So beware there are 2 locations and they are WORLDS apart. KDH all the way. Skip this one. And staff has no idea about anything I asked them. Sweet but couldn't answer any questions. read more

We met my cousins here for breakfast one morning while we were on vacation. I have been craving pancakes all summer and thought, "Hey, this is my chance!". The combinations online sounded great so I was pumped. We walk into the restaurant and it was set up way differently than I expected. It's kind of a cafeteria setup, where you grab a tray for your party and then order drinks from a lady behind the counter. The menu is posted on the back wall, listing the different breakfast combinations available. I was surprised that the specific pancake combinations were NOT present on the board, as they were named online based on what ingredients were in them. After deciding on your order, you place it at a cash register before choosing your table, then the servers bring your dishes to you. My husband and I decided to split a short stack, two sunny side up eggs and two sausage links. I settled on chocolate chips and bananas for in my pancakes. When the food came out, the pancakes looked like they had almost nothing in them. A small scoop of butter and some sprinkled powdered adorned the top, however until I flipped the pancakes over, the "toppings" weren't present. They did have a decent amount of chocolate chips, however I only found two slices of bananas in my half of the three pancakes. Slightly disappointed about that, the pancakes themselves, though thin but filling, were tasty. Half the short stack was enough as I finished my mother's blueberry pancakes. What pushed this pancake house to a four star, in my book, was that the owner came out not once, but TWICE to offer us coffee. Not only did he offer the coffee, he cracked jokes, told stories, and held conversation with everyone at the table. He did not charge my husband when he gave in to the coffee offer and he could not have been more personable. For that kind of service, I am a fan! Been going by for years finally had a chance to stop with family around lunchtime. Very interesting very old style place full of all kinds of great charm. Personally had a Greek salad and I opted for the Burger both where great good size full of lots of flavor and a decent value. My daughter she had her favorite toasted cheese and fries hey that's what kids do no complaints out of her. I wife had their Philly cheesesteak sandwich it was a good size and no complaints out of her also.
