I had heard nothing but awesome things about this place so we recently tried to go for brunch. OMG it was awful. It was 90 outside and only 82 indoors, their AC couldnt keep up. The line to order stretched out the door and by the time we made it up to the beverage station (30 mins) we were pouring sweat. The beverages were sitting in lukewarm water (which must once have been ice?) along with the "fruit cups" aka soggy melon in styrofoam bowls. There was a woman behind the counter using her bare hands to put ice in people's cups from a large bucket. Overall, my biggest issue was cleanliness. The food prices were good and the pancakes were ok, but the floor was dirty and sticky, my plate had a dirty crack running down one side, and the "sweet tea" was abysmal. I know better than to expect good iced coffee most places, but its North Carolina. Sweet tea should be awesome! My family loves this place! We always stop and eat here when we're at OBX. Even during the off season, this place has a steady flow of patrons. The pancakes are awesome. This is no IHOP. My wife's French Toast was delicious. The bacon is slap you mama good! The grits are not Quaker brand, but a much courser variety that's more Southern cooking.The food is always constant and delicious. Stack 'Em High was a perfectly fine establishment. It was the only breakfast place near us, somehow, so our group of 11 chose to go here. The staff were very kind and accommodating to our very large party. Sitting us in tables near each other and then moving us around when another table left. At this place, you order from the line and then are seated with an order number. No wait service, strictly speaking, but the waitresses came by very frequently to refill our coffees which we appreciated. I chose to get the crab cakes and eggs which was good. Stack 'em High Pancake House is AAdvantage dining and that attracted us to give it a try. We normally don't go for breakfast, once in a while we skip lunch and do a late breakfast instead. This was a Sunday, deep into the off season and they were not busy in the late morning. You go through the line to order and find a table. They bring your food to you. The comprehensive menu is definitely aimed at your American breakfast cravings with a few lunch sandwiches in addition. They do take-out packages for large hungry families which looks pretty cool. There is definite Greek influence in the menu, alas no Mexican to speak of. I ordered a cheese omelet with grits and sausage links. You have your choice of links or patties and the person who took my order said she preferred the links. The omelet was large with a lot of cheese. I ate half and had half for a later meal. The sausages were of very good quality. The grits were fine with a generous knob of butter. Ms T had her usual two eggs sunny with sausage and all were fine. She also liked the sausage. This is a place to be recommended for breakfast at the Outer Banks, based on this one visit. I think it is where we will go when we do have breakfast. In my mind I can't help but compare it to the bad American breakfast that we had ~3 months earlier at Almost Eleven. Breakfast is well done at Stack 'em High. We assume the two locations are interchangeable. The KDH location was closed for the season in early January, so we drove a little farther to Kitty Hawk. read more

This place is absolutely amazing. It isn't a traditional wait-staffed restaurant. You get your food up front, and they serve it to you when it's ready. It's a family-run business and the dynamic between everyone is so friendly, fun, and tight-knit. As for the food, it's exactly what I wanted to eat when I thought of a good beach breakfast. Not an IHOP, but a pretty good pancake house - walk in, grab a tray, they'll take your drink orders at the counter and take your breakfast order at the register. Environments like this one have always made me feel rushed. You walk in and have this giant menu on the wall to look through to find what you want. It's definitely a "me thing" and not a "them thing" though because the people working here never say or do anything to make me feel that way, laid back, and always smiling (as you should be if you live down there!) I'm not sure why this location as a lower star rating than the other one, but I can assure you that this is one of the best breakfast options at OBX. The restaurant is cafeteria style - you stand in line with your tray and order/pay at the end. Along the way you get your drinks, muffins, etc. The line was out the door when we arrived, but as other reviewers have mentioned we were sitting down in 20 minutes. The have a mish-mash of tables in the restaurant, and although I was skeptical our party of six would find a seat, the turnover was such that we had no problem at all. The owners must be Greek, since you will find more than a few gyros and tzatziki options on the menu. But let's talk food - oh the glorious breakfast food. First up was the smothered hash browns. The potatoes are in chunks, not chipped, and spread on top is a glorious concoction of cheese, bacon, and onions. It may have lowered my life expectancy a few years, but it was totally worth it. Next was the pancakes. I ordered the short stack with bananas and chocolate chips, which also included a serving of bacon and two eggs. Here I thought the pancakes would have the chocolate chips and bananas on top, but no dear reader, they are actually backed inside the pancakes. The pancakes were light and fluffy, roughly six inches in diameter, and absolutely delicious (I can still taste it as I write this review). The bacon was also delicious - salty and not crispy to the point of shattering. My girlfriend ordered the Southwestern omelet. Oh my god. It was delicious - pulled pork and green/red peppers inside with a special sauce on top. That baby was roughly seven to eight inches long. Also came with hash browns and a piece of toast sprinkled with a seasoning that tasted like Old Bay. Highly recommend. In conclusion, I can't rave about this place enough. The prices are also very reasonable - our bill was only $25 for the above including drinks. The best breakfast I've ever had at the beach. read more

We walked in the door and were right at the front, to meet a rude older lady named Joy. There is no Joy in this women. She is rude and cared more about us taking only 1 trey then she did about getting our drinks. She was so rude, I had to bite my tongue. The food came right out and was hit or miss. There was no one there to meet my guest and I and we were utterly confused. I walked down to the end of the line to explain that we needed some assistance and was told someone wound be right there. Waited a few extra minutes without knowing what the hell we were to do (and people lining up behind us) but eventually a woman appeared behind the line and to get our drink orders. She barked at us about grabbing a tray and then barked at us again when we each grabbed one and I was quick to defend our ignorance when she seemed frustrated that we didn't know what to do. Once our orders were placed and we were sat at our table I quickly noticed at least 6 other tables waiting patiently for their food. It seemed odd that more than half of the restaurant wasn't eating yet. We ended up waiting more than an hour for our food but the redeeming factor for that was the gentleman making rounds and delivering food ensuring us that it was coming and appreciating our patience. He was kind and obviously understood that things were moving slowly. Our pancakes and waffles were delicious, and the food was hot. The food: very delicious. The Spanish omelette is great and the pancakes are incredible. They're thin and flavorful with great texture. The bacon is thin and mild. Which is okay I guess, but I'd willingly pay an extra dollar for thicker and more flavorful bacon. The sausage is thick and flavorful. Good stuff when dipped in the syrup they give you. The only thing I didn't get was how to get refills on drinks. I got coffee and oj and finished them both, expecting to get someone to top them off for me. It was my first time there, so I'm not sure if you had to walk back up to the counter for it or not. The workers are very nice and pleasant. I am not usually one to leave a negative review, especially given the hardships restaurants have come under over the past 1.5 years, but I felt compelled given the lack of professionalism we experienced. About three weeks prior, I called multiple restaurants in the Kitty Hawk area (including the other Stack Em High location) to order a take-out family style breakfast for our family the morning after our wedding. We were planning this event from Boston, so wanted to make sure every detail was confirmed prior to our arrival. Every place I contacted was not open the day we were planning for (Monday September 6th, Labor Day) so when I called this location, I specifically confirmed they would be open on this date. I was transferred to two different people that day and was finally told that they were open that day, could fulfill my order and I was to pick it up at 8am that morning. I once again confirmed the date for September 6th and my credit card was immediately charged. Fast forward to the morning after our wedding, my husband and I arrive at Stack Em High in Kitty Hawk to pick up the breakfast at 8am on the dot. There is not a single car in the parking lot and the doors are locked. There was no answer when we called and we even called over to the other Stack Em High just to make sure we hadn't made a mistake and went to the wrong location. We rechecked this location's website, which specifically says "Open Daily Memorial Day - Labor Day." We had to wait to speak to someone until the following Wednesday when they were finally open. My husband very calmly explained the situation: that we had scheduled a take out breakfast for Monday which we obviously did not receive and would like for the charge to be reimbursed. He was immediately met with defensiveness from the man on the phone who accused him of being "the Yelp Guy." When he eventually calmed down, my husband told him he was not sure what he was talking about, and explained again that we simply did not receive what we paid for and understand if it was a miscommunication and would like a refund. The man then went on to say that Stack Em High has not been open on Mondays in two years and that they do not do take out breakfasts (meanwhile, as above, their website says they are open daily during the high season and there is an entire page dedicated to their take out family style breakfasts, of which we ordered "the Partridge Family"). While I cannot speak to the quality of the food, we were very disappointed by the lack of communication and professionalism we experienced. We were told we would receive a call back after the restaurant closed for the day to discuss how we could resolve the issue and that they would contact the credit card company to cancel the charge. Neither of these things happened. A very unfortunate situation that could have been handled differently. I guess I've been left no choice but to actually become "the Yelp Guy." read more

The pancakes - in her opinion - had no taste and immediately soaked up the small amount of syrup. They looked soggy. My home fries/hash browns were mushy and resembled baby food. The omelette was decent. The line was out the door at 8a and still out the door at 10 when we drove by later. I don't get it. I love breakfast and this was not good. The country ham was so salted and smoked we couldn't finish it. Eggs over easy were more like eggs over hard. The pancakes are more like crepes which was disappointing as well. We wanted a good breakfast to end the week and my brother had stack'em high at the other location earlier in the week. I was looking at the reviews for the other location and was excited based off of all the great feedback. When we got in the car we realized there was another stack'em high a little closer to us so we decided to go to this location. We wish we drove the extra 4 minutes for the other location. First we were greater by an elderly woman who was in charge of giving out drinks. She was rude and pushy and yelled at me when I started moving the tray down the line before someone in my group got their coffee, yet she handed the coffee to my friend didn't put it in the tray. Talking to our friends the menu is a lot different than the other location. I ordered the number 4 on the specials menu. The red flannel (which is potatoes, pastrami, corned beef, onions and cheese, a lot of cheese). Scrambled eggs, hash browns and white toast. I would not recommend getting both the red flannel and the hash browns they're basically the same just the hash browns don't have all the add ons. It was a lot of potatoes. The red flannel also was kinda sweet which I found weird. I was also dissapointed when the hash browns were potato chunks and not the shredded potatoes like at the other location. We all felt very rushed and unwelcome. They never asked my boyfriend if he wanted a refill for his water but were always walking around refilling coffee. Don't bother with this location. I stopped by here with my wife and her family for breakfast. They take your order high school cafeteria style, with the only exception being that your food is brought out to your table once it is ready. Being the offseason, the inside wasn't too crowded and we were able to get our order in and food at our table fairly quickly. My wife and I decided to share a short stack of chocolate chip and banana pancakes with 2 eggs and sausage. The eggs were done over easy and turned out very nicely done with the yolk still in tact. Sausage was decent with a little spice to it and the pancakes were light and fluffy and very filling. The food was a 3.5 star for me, my only complaint being that we could have had a little more banana in the pancakes that we ordered. The owner came out twice to check on all of us. He was very personable, made us laugh a couple times, and made sure everything was to our liking. The price is hard to beat if you're looking for a good filling breakfast. Spending under $9 for a filling meal for two people with coffee is VERY hard to come by! Breakfast was great, as always. We were unfamiliar with the new rule of ordering drinks before heading to the register to place your order. There was a misconception of the rule. The "warlord of drinks" explained that our entire party must use one tray. Consider for a moment 13 assorted hot coffees and waters on one tray vs 1 person balancing tray to multiple tables. However, we were all paying separately and in odd couples and this was not a situation we were willing to risk. Everything is loaded with powdered sugar to hide the gross waffles and pancakes. They don't even put ingredients in the waffle batter (the other location does), and their country ham was missing half of the meat and tasted microwaved and rubbery.
