Great food, not-so-great service. I've been to Stackd quite a few times. In my experience there, there have always been two truths that will apply: 1. The food will be really good. 2. The service will be pretty slow. The service tonight definitely applied that truth, and then some. Typically, it can take 20 - 25 minutes to receive your food at Stack'd, which is okay because you typically have time to talk and enjoy the decor. However, our food tonight took, at the very least, 35 - 40 minutes. I find it very odd, as, while Stack'd is normally pretty busy (as it was tonight), there are plenty of servers. However, it always seems as if the servers disappear for minutes at a time. I had ordered my burger medium rare. My burger was closer to medium than rare (which is okay - I can live with a little overcooked). Unfortunately, I could tell my burger had been sitting under the heat lamp - the bun was completely dried out, ruining what normally would be a great burger experience. The fries seemed okay overall. Overall, Stack'd has a good burger. Other than tonight with a really dried-out bun, I've never had a bad burger experience. However, I've learned to expect a slow wait, and tonight was the slowest service I've received in quite a while. So, Stack'd can be quite good - just make sure that you're prepared to spend a while waiting. read more

We decided to try something new on a Friday night and headed downtown for Stack'd. I had seen it many times but was never down there at an opportune time for lunch or dinner. We decided to bypass the outdoor seating despite the nice evening temperatures and waited a few minutes for a table inside. The interior has a modern look with a pool table in a side room as you walk in and an open area of bar/seating area. It should be noted that there is plenty of seating around the bar area if you don't want to get a table or don't mind even standing. We ended up getting the shaft a little as they have a back room with perhaps 4 or 5 tables with absolutely no ambiance of the main dining room/bar area--we would strongly advise asking for another table or just grabbing a seat at the bar and eating if you are being led to their 'back area'. As for the food, we started with their interpretation of mozzarella sticks called mozzarella stack. They are essentially fried wantons filled with mozzarella cheese, covered with basil, tomato, and pesto and then drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. For a second we thought we might be on Top Chef and that this was a Quick Fire Challenge where the chefs were told to interpret bar or fair food. In this 'challenge' Stack'd would pass but I'm not sure they would win--the dish was good but standard mozzarella sticks done right, and simply (see O'Donoghues or Saz's), are better. We then moved on to the main course. We both had 'Build Your Own Burgers'...TIP: For whatever reason, the Build Your Own is anywhere from $.50 to $1.00 less than the 'specialty' burgers on the menu, yet you can create the exact same specialty burger using the Build Your Own ingredients...so just do that! As many have suggested, definitely get the pretzel roll--it is fantastic. The burgers themselves were okay--have a great grill taste but too thin for my likings. For dessert we enjoyed the Smore Shack which was fantastic. read more

My wife and I were in Milwaukee for a wedding this past weekend. My wife had looked this place up and while I wasn't quite sold (I wanted some sort of German fair) I was pleasantly surprised with how good Stack'D was. The atmosphere was laid back and what I would expect from a burger joint. It was midday on a workday so not very busy, with a sign saying to seat yourself. We took a seat at the bar and received pleasant service. They had a nice list of local beers to select from, as well as local soda if you want to go that route. This was our first opportunity to get our hands on famed Wisconsin cheese curds, so naturally we ordered those as our starter. This was my first (still only) experience with cheese curds so I'm not sure if Stack'D uses a "traditional" recipe, but they were amazing! Fried on the outside, slightly gooey, cheesy bliss on the inside. They were served with a spicy ranch dip, that I wasn't sure I was going to like, but it served as an excellent compliment to the cheese flavor. You can select from several different signature burgers or build you own. They have several different patty selections--turkey, grass-fed beef, bison, and free range chicken. For the vegetarians out there they do have a black bean patty as well as portabella mushroom caps available. They also have a range of bread/bun options. Since we were having a large dinner at the rehearsal later we decided that we would share a burger. We ordered a grass-fed beef patty (medium rare) with Wisconsin cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo, served on a pretzel bun. Upon slicing into the burger it was cooked to medium-rare perfection. Pink in the middle, not just a little like you get at most places when you order medium rare, and oozing with delicious juices. Yes, sadly cutting in meant losing all those juices, but taking that first bite was like an atom bomb of flavor. The grass-fed beef has the best flavor of any I've tasted. Where I've found pretzel buns to be a bit too dry and salty at other restaurants, the bun at Stack'D was balanced with just the right amount of salt. We were worried that the bun itself wouldn't hold up with the flavors of our rather traditionally American topped burger, all the flavors gelled to perfection in this burger. As our side we ordered the Twisted Mac n Cheese, just to try something new. Neither of us are fans of blue cheese so I don't think we can fairly judge this dish. It's a negligible amount of blue cheese, but it was too much for the both of us. Seeing as its a burger joint and we ordered something that neither of us like too much, I can't fault the restaurant! Only our taste buds... All in all, we loved this place. I only wish I could go back for more! read more

I love burgers. I've eaten at Stack'd on a few occasions, and while the food is usually good, there always seems to be one thing that kinda puts a damper on my experience there. On one occasion, I treated my teenage son to dinner after a great report card. (He loves burgers too...chip off the ol' block.) He ordered the "Build Your Own" burger, and I ordered the mini-sliders and an order of fries. The food came quickly, although our server left a lot to be desired with her attentiveness. He loved his burger, and I definitely could see why: it was well made and looked delicious. My sliders were delicious as well; the little pretzel buns were absolutely perfect and the mini burger patties weren't pre-made "cutouts". They were well-seasoned handmade patties. Score! My fries were cold though, and since the server hadn't really seemed very interested in serving us in the first place, I decided not to try to send them back for some hot ones. The probably would've been perfect had they been hot, since they tasted okay cold. On another occasion, I met a friend at Alterra & we went next door to Stack'd to get some grub. I ordered sliders & fries again, to go this time. I sat at the bar for what seemed like FOREVER waiting on the food. I could've understood the wait had the place been super busy, but it wasn't. This time the sliders were pre-made patties. Meh. They tasted okay, but not nearly as good as the handmade patties I'd had before. The most recent time, it was my birthday weekend. You know how, as adults, sometimes all of your friends & family are too busy (or kinda don't give enough of a crap) about your birthday? I was having one of those moments, so I decided to go have some tasty sliders all by myself. This time the server was a very nice girl who was attentive even despite being busy. And this time, the sliders were worse than before- they were pieces of a regular sized pre-made burger patty, cut into quarters. BLECH. They didn't taste bad, but once I lifted the pretzel bun lid & realized wtf was going on, I was turned off. AND my fries were cold again. Birthday dinner deflated. We tried this place a few months ago. The food all looked nice, but didn't taste very good. My girlfriend and I each got a burger, which come with one or two sides, and we got the onion rings. My burger was so greasy that the heel of the bun was soaked all the way through. Gross. The patty was pretty bland, but the soaked bun had already ruined it. She didn't like hers either. The onion rings were ok. The waiter accidentally threw out our left overs. My dog probably would've liked those. They took 1/2 the price of my burger off of the bill for the mistake. Came here before a concert in the summertime. They have a nice patio thought the service is a bit slow if you sit out there. I went inside to use the washroom and thought the inside looked cool too. The four of us all ordered different burgers and sides. I opted for the black bean burger and fries and was very happy. When I think of the purpose of Stack'd - a burger joint - it's an awesome Milwaukee choice. I am a Celiac and Stack'ds offerings hit the spot for my kind. I've come here multiple times and have never been disappointed. My boyfriend, who usually does not willingly eat gf food, thinks their gf chicken tenders and fries are "really good". The service has been slow at peak dinner times, but I've never gone when I've been in a hurry and it's in a good location in the Third Ward. They have a good brunch - not the Best in MKE but it's definitely decent and nice in a pinch. This place serves up some seriously good burgers to order. They even have bison on the menu if you are so inclined. I guess my main reason for not giving more stars, is that Milwaukee has so many awesome burger joints that have been in town for several decades. Personally, when I am craving a burger, I will most likely go to Kopp's, knowing, that I will most likely have to fend off 2-3 kid's baseball teams in line. Stack'd does have an awesome location. I am a little surprised this place doesn't try to sell itself as a full-fledged bar given how busy the bars in the third ward and just a little south of their location in walker's point typically are. I have been to Stack'd a few times now, most recently this past weekend. I am never disappointed with my food and always leave with a full tummy. The build-your-own-burger option is great! You can choose bun (pretzel, Texas toast, classic etc), meat, cheese and toppings. So many combinations! They also have a large list of signature burgers to choose from. The mac and cheese (as a side or entrée) is creamy, rich and fantastic. There is a large beer and wine selection- but no drinks like specialty martinis or anything (I'm sure they could make them, just none on the menu). The atmosphere is awesome- urban, intimate and fits well with the rest of Milwaukee's 3rd Ward. Has a pool table as well! Service is always great as well! read more

We went there on a Thursday around 4. Happy hour. Two for one rails are awesome! The restaurant was not very busy, and our waiter was very attentive. We started with the loaded fries. They tasted fine, but they had this weird green color to the sauce. I am not a big sour cream fan, but can usually tolerate it on dishes like this, so I didn't ask them to leave it off. But this had a thick covering of sour cream and cheese that was so messy I had to use a fork and several napkins. The burger was delightful. If this was just about the burger it'd get at least 4 stars! I enjoyed the pretzel bun and the toppings were the toppings I pick to top any burger. The side of mac and cheese, well, I was disappointed. The Chancery's mac and cheese is better than Stack'd's! It was cold, the noodles were mushy, and the cheese sauce was just not all that good. I may give Stack'd another chance. I hear they have a lovely brunch and I really did enjoy the burger... This go around, however, Stack'd was simply mediocre to me. read more

I stopped in today with my manager at his recommendation, and was pretty happy to get an experience rather close to what I was expecting. The inside hasn't changed much since it was The Social, which is fine. The Social had a good, open yet cozy layout. They also had Man vs Food playing on a giant TV, which is probably a better appetizer than anything you could actually eat. For lunch I built my own burger with tallgrass beef, cheddar cheese, bacon, and jalapeno peppery on an original bun. For my side I had the 3 cheese mac 'n cheese. My manager had the pork sandwich (his favorite). They came rather quickly and were both very good. Mine was cooked well, and I liked the fried pickles. Some of the special burgers look interesting, and I was told that The Hangover, while good and greasy can be a big mess. It'd recommend building your own, or going with my manager's recommendation, the Pulled Pork Stack if you're in the mood for that. Stack'd is our go to place for great burgers. Their grass fed beef and bison make for amazing, fresh tasting burgers. My husband and I have tried many of the specialty stacks as well as built our own creations with pleasing results. We have eaten there at least a dozen times and never been disappointed. It is also a great place to go when dining with friends who have food allergies. They offer a great selection of gluten free and vegetarian/vegan options. The beer selection and ambiance are decent too. They offer some local brews as well as a good mix of imports you'd expect to see around downtown eateries. Of course, dinners can anticipate seeing a lot of mustaches and flannel, but that is all part of the charm. There is room for improvement on meal pacing and food temperature. The fries are delicious, but not always as piping hot they ought to be. On our most recent trip, our entrees were delivered almost on top of our appetizers, which made for a fun game of musical plates to make room on the table. Certainly, these problems vary depending on wait staff, party, size, and the crowd in the restaurant. Bottom line: Stack'd has top quality meat, great topping selection, and a relaxing Third Ward vibe. read more

We also tried a side of onion rings - large rings, lightly fried and stacked on top of each other. However, the thing I really liked was the wine list - $20 for any bottle. I had high hopes for this place, but it unfortunatley let me down. We went for lunch, although it wasn't terribly busy when we were there. It took 45 minutes to get our food - unacceptable, especially given that we ordered burgers. The first burger was overcooked, although it wasn't horrible. My problem was really with the second burger. I have never in my life been served a burger as undercooked as that. I am talking tartar raw. If I had not attended the #mkeFoodies Twitter event at Stack'd Bar earlier this month, I might not have otherwise found out about this great bar. It is attached to the Alterra Coffee on 1st Street in the 5th Ward. It's architecture inside and out fits the area well looking like an old factory style building that has been renovated. For the event we were given one local brew on tap for free and they have quite the selection of local Wisconsin brews and liquors - an entire page of a menu dedicated to listing this. We also were able to sample some of their great appetizers. The deep friend cheese curds were a typical Wisconsin foodie dream (how can you deep fry a cheese curd wrong) and deep friend pickle slices I'm always a fan of. What made both of these sooo amazing, was Stack'd signature Siracha ranch dipping sauce -- just enough kick to get the taste buds excited. The BBQ nachos were also a treat and I never thought of having BBQ pork on nachos. I stayed then for dinner and built my own burger - a very juicy medium rare 1/2 lb marinated mushroom swiss burger that came with gigantic onion rings and deep fried pickles. The only thing the burger was missing was a side of the Siracha ranch sauce. I probably could have asked for it but I didn't think of it at the time. I will definitely be returning for apps, dinner or even just a cocktail. read more

Previously we have had good experiences here. Tonight, however, we encountered a change in policy that left us a bit put off. First off, the food is excellent. These are "gourmet burgers" and worth paying a bit extra for; though the price is rather high - which can be expected from the locale and the premium ingredients. This is not the issue we have. My group travels around the state for business. We frequently eat at local establishments to make sure we engage the local economy. We do not spend lavishly, but we do spend consistently at places we enjoy. Our previous visits to Stack'd were enjoyable opportunities for our group, which is often six or more people at once. Because our meals are expensed, we always split our checks. This visit, however, we found that the maximum number of "splits" we were allowed was 4. We had 5 people. The waiter was queried several times about this policy, and he explained it well enough. However, not having faced this limit at this establishment before, we were puzzled. We requested the manager three times throughout the course of our meal, and only after receiving the final checks did he finally send her over. It was obvious he was getting frustrated and irate at our enquiries, and he conducted himself in an unprofessional manner. I feel we were cordial in explaining that this policy hampers business travelers, and the manager did offer to assist us, which we are grateful for. She explained that the policy was enacted to make her wait staff more efficient by reducing the work created by groups who are mathematically-challenged. We get that. However, expensing requires individual receipts and proof of payment, and it left us in an unsatisfactory position. I recommend business travelers avoid this establishment if your party exceeds four people. Your accountants will appreciate it. read more

I was quite content with the overall vibe I got from Stack'd...however, the quality of food and atmosphere are overrated. We had two different burgers, the turkey burger and the Veggie burger. I give both of them a big fat 'meh'. We also ordered the portobello fries which were served straight from the fryer - ouch. I decided to take the girlfriend out for a casual dinner, and we were debating our options while at work. We were looking to take advantage of some specials, and curious as to what Stack'd was offering, we checked the website. The specials page was slightly confusing, so we tweeted @Stackd and asked. They replied to us promptly, and we made up our minds to go there. That first great customer service experience was followed by a lackluster turn. We were seated right away, but ignored by the waitstaff for 10-15 minutes. I expect a hello by a passing server, whether I'm at their tablebor not, and I didn't get it. I was starting to get frustrated when we were finally greeted, but the service improved vastly after that, almost becoming too attentive. I had the Hangover Stack, which was a burger with cheddar, Neuske's bacon, fried onions and a fried egg. It certainly would have cured any hangover woes. The menu said it came with a bottle of Tabasco, which I did bot receive, but it wasn't imperative, so I dealt. I also has their 3 PBR cans for $5, which is a fair price. I was happy with the food, but the service needs to get more consistent before I will become a Stack'd regular. read more
