Oh Stack'd, where to begin? I had driven past this location many times since they opened, and I was intrigued. Then, on a flight I read an article in the Journal Sentinel about Bloody Mary's in MKE, and theirs was highly recommend. It would seemed like an invitation to drink and dine, a fabulous place to spend a lazy Sunday morning before the final playoff games, right? Opportunity missed, I think management was a tad unprepared for the amount of people who would arrive to order the now "famous" Stack'd Walk of Shame Combo.
There was no hostess, we stood in the pool area/doorway (an area that would have been better served by tables, at least that morning) for a few minutes before we were told to just grab a seat anywhere. Um, ok. The place was jamming, and in order to not sit directly next to a group of 5 people we lingered by a table that had just left. It was a mess, no big deal (An aside: what is it with people who let their kids TRASH a restaurant and make zero effort to clean it up? Fries smooshed on the seats, ketchup on the wall, really? ).
Nora, our server, was very nice and quite apologetic. We were out for a leisurely brunch and like to observe, but damn, the service was SLOW. Understaffing is not the fault of the servers, but of management. They didn't even have bussers, and the line of people waiting by the door was quickly building (and remained packed the entire almost 2 hours it took us to get our food and drink).
Now, let me tell you, I know my Bloody Marys. I love my Bloody's, even when they're mediocre. I was excited when we walked in and saw the bartender making up a fresh batch of mix. Unfortunately, when expectations are high there's really only one way to go.
Our Bloody's arrived after a looong wait. Let me correct myself, our A-1 Steak Sauce with vodka arrived after a looong wait. Seriously, it was not good, All I could taste was A-1. I did quite enjoy my beer chaser (Buffalo Water Bison Blond), so much so that I ordered one of those instead of another Bloody, as did my husband (unheard of for us). Unfortunately, the glass the beer came in had a sour odor, too bad I didn't realize it until my beer was more than half gone. Oh well, what doesn't kill you only gives you gut rot.
We ordered the Pulled Pork Nachos and Mozzarella Stack to start.
Pulled Pork Nachos - the meat was COLD, not just cool, but cold, and served in large chunks. Apparently it's pulled-by-the-customer pork. It had only 1 piece of bacon on it. There were 4 thin slivers of jalapeno that had wonderful spiciness, but with only 4 tiny pieces, are you kidding? It was seriously lacking in cheese, I mean, they were literally dry wonton chips with dry (meaning little sauce) cold pork and some cheese. This dish could be really good, but it was lacking something in a big way.
The Mozzarella Stack was ok, too bad it was more wrapper than cheese. The basil pesto was a flavorful addition, but it was way too oily. The balsamic reduction was delicious, too bad there was so little of it on the plate.
For our burger we split the Don't Mess with Texas. Now, that was a good burger. The funny thing was, the burger cost $11. If we had built our own it only would have been $9, but we wouldn't have gotten an onion ring (which disappeared into the heartiness of the burger anyway). The fried pickle chips tried, but they were cut too thin to hold up to the batter, they too disappeared. Our first mac n cheese side arrived lukewarm at best. When we brought this to Nora's attention she quickly brought another hot one over to us. The cold one sat on the table the rest of the meal.
We observed the chaos around us, wondering how many people would not be returning. There was a party of maybe 10-12 people, their food arrived in three different intervals, about 5 minutes apart. The couple beside us received one Bloody Mary, about 4 minutes later the other one arrived. The tip on our bottle of BBQ sauce was too small to squeeze anything out of without using extreme amounts of pressure. It was hilarious for me to watch husband cringe and wait for me to spray him with sauce once it finally gave. It didn't by the way (give), we just abandoned the effort.
So, the service was rough, but the employees were kind. The appetizers needed improvement, but they were so busy I didn't dare ask for anything. Our glasses (and the glasses of tables around us) sat empty for a while before anyone offered refills. The crazy thing is, I actually kind of want to go back. I am insisting that it was just bad timing. The manager must not have known the article was going to run that week (it's the only excuse I can think of). Too bad my husband refuses.
I'm willing to give them another shot, but just one. I can see the potential, but I guarantee you, I won't order the Bloody Mary.
