I may enjoy beer samping (mini beers) a bit too much. This is another great place to sit down on Commerical Drive and just sample beers. With 40 craft and micro beers on tap to choose from you are bound to find some new and enjoyable flavours. Bring on the mini beers! My only complaint was going after a UFC event and they had run out of nachos. So sad! All I really wanted was a good plate of nachos to go along with my delish beer. read more

Guys it's time for a change. I've been a customer since you opened, and a few years before that when the place was called The End Cafe. You do 3 things right that keep me coming back: great beer selection, great staff, and really good food. But you can't keep resting on these laurels. The atmosphere isn't very fun: the seating is more like a cafeteria than a bar, the space is chilly in the winter and hot in the summer, the floor area near the bar is gross and smells horrible sometimes. You did a great reno on the brewery, well it's the restaurant's turn now. Booths and communal tables would go a long way in making the space more social and inviting. The prices aren't competitive, and you've recently raised them again. Why are you charging $8 for a 14oz beer made right in our own city? I can get 16 or even 20oz of the same virtually anywhere for cheaper. Finally, why is there no happy hour for less busy times?! There are long stretches of the weekdays where nearly the entire place is empty. You've done very well up to this point but need to keep up with the times. The Drive is gentrifying, and soon enough there will be pubs offering the same beer in a better space with competitive prices. It might be too late to modernize by then! read more

Not your average pub - fast friendly service, relish food featuring many in-house made dishes, and a huge beer menu this place exceeded expectations. The food is on the pricier side for a pub but the quality and portion really matched the price. We had the dill pickle spears to start (crunchy and tasty). Then I had the veggie burger with a very yummy and clearly made in house patty. Husband had "the burger" on a gluten free bun, that patty also looked handmade. The fries were awesome, handcut and cooked perfectly. Husband also had a Caesar which he said was tasty and spicy. The bathrooms were also way cleaner and nicer than I expected. I must admit that I had doubts about this place before I went in. In my 8 years of being in Vancouver I have seen the ownership change quite a few times from a Portuguese restaurant to a Pho restaurant to The Monkey Lounge to the End Cafe to finally St. Augustine's. I think this recent incarnation as a pub should put an end to these constant changes. The beer is what I initially came for, and it's the reason I go back. Their local selection on tap is beautifully chosen, and overwhelming at 37 choices currently being offered! The seasonal picks, which change almost every month, are always exciting. But, the big reason I keep coming back are the Monday Cask nights. Cask beer names such as "Grand Cru w/ Blood Orange Zest" and "Driftwood Crooked Coast Alt Beer dry hopped with Czech Saaz hops" get me salivating like crazy. Add a tasty 1/2 price pizza to your beer(s) and you'll be a very happy customer. The service is inconsistent, but the waitresses and the brewmasters know their beers like Jimmy Dean knows sausages. The place is great for larger groups and has lots of LCD TVs showing sports and more sports. Do come down on Monday and enjoy yourself. read more

This bar has quite a selection of beers including some seasonal drafts that I have only encountered here on draft. My main reason for coming here was to watch UFC as I didn't realize its hard to find a place without cover showing UFC (Casino lounges are not my preferred choice). It does get really packed though so it might be wise to go early if you are a larger group. Food was average. I had a burger with a side of sweet potato fries. Nothing memorable. The crowd on both occasions was friendly and and I was given the usual West Coast over East Coast talk (well at least it was better than the TO Vs Other big cities in Canada talk I usually end up having) Not a bad place to watch UFC. read more

REALLY liked this place. But then again, their pilsners were on special for $4.95, and the wings were $4.50/pound on Wednesday nights. The rest of the menu is pretty high, so we definitely got value. One knock on them is that they don't serve pitchers. Why not? Makes no sense to me. The wings -- though tiny in size -- were hot, promptly served and really good. We got the salt and pepper (way better than it sounds), teriyaki and tamari-ginger. Yum. There was a good crowd too, not overly loud and obnoxious and just a good atmosphere. I've biked past this place a few times on my way downtown and never went in for a drink until now. A buddy of mine was leaving Canada to work in Asia for awhile so a few of us decided to grab some drinks and some food. We were greeted by a lovely hostess who believe it or not was named Augustine. It was nice outside so we asked for a table outside. We got a few craft beers, one of my friends decided he wanted a Bud but apparently they don't serve that kind of stuff haha. When the waitress came over to get our food orders she recommended the pizzas so I went for the margarita, nothing too fancy and the rest of my group just went for the burgers and fries. No complaints at all, that was a really yummy pizza I only wish I could've ordered two. Downside was the price, a little higher than you'd expect for a place like this. A lot of funny shirts though, if I remember correctly on the back of some servers it read "Repint your sins". I guess that'll catch on. I'd say this is a good place for groups of you're not looking to go all the way downtown. Apart from the price I quite enjoyed myself. I regret to report that our favourite local pub has fallen by the wayside. Where we would once huddle around a table or two, with a few plates of nachos and many pints of beer that we thoroughly enjoyed without feeling we needed to default on this month's rent or take out second mortgages, we now are seated trying to guess at what beer we will enjoy solely based on someone else's write up of their experience, with what may be an extremely different palette than ours. Furthermore, what was once a fairly priced heaping plate of nachos is now a pathetic attempt to satiate a healthy appetite of one, let alone appies to share for a bunch of beer lovers. Once upon a time, there was a place in our neighbourhood that would welcome you and once you were seated you could ask to try a sample of a few beers to make sure that your experience in this establishment was wonderful. You would order nachos that arrived steaming under heaps of cheese and toppings. Their salty goodness would add to your healthy thirst to have a second or third of the amazing beer you ended up with. Now you order a pint for $8 and hope to gods that it doesn't suck. You can read the description and ask the wait staff all you want but it will never be able to paint a clear picture of how your taste buds will read it. My last 4 experiences there have left me ordering a beer, hating it, begrudging that I wasted $8, not wanting to complain and get another one I'd hate, only having a few nachos off of the inadequately sized plate and finally leaving questioning, "what happened?", "this happened last time, why did I come back?" One could say that there are so many beers you are bound to find something you like... but I'd disagree. With so many I find it difficult to find one that makes me truly happy. It makes me sad that a place that used to make us so happy has changed so much we are now looking for a different place... It is a great place to go for the birthday party. People can eat dinner and watch the Game at the same time. We've ordered Nachos, Chicken Wings and The 4 beers flights since lots of people ordered them. It's a great thing to try all the popular food in this bar. read more

Popped into St. Augustine's for a after work beer yesterday. The signs announcing 20 beers on tap and cheap, cheap, cheap drink specials had perked my interest over the last few weeks. This pub concept is the newest in a handful of ownership turnovers for this location. The beer selection was as promised, but only one variety was offered on special with the rest being a bit higher in price that I would expect to pay. The food was priced about average for what you'd expect at a pub, but all we had was beer. The service was very slow. there was only one server on staff and she was covering far too many tables to give anyone adequate service. the pub is large and open with a small outside seating area. It was pretty empty the entire time we were there. I hope they up the level of service and offer a few more reasonably priced beers so they can make a go of it. read more

St. Augustine's was really not on it's game today. I joined some friends who were having some drinks there - our waitress kept forgetting to bring someone's drink order (seriously - it took at least 30 minutes every time he ordered a coke), she also had no idea what was going on with the beers. I get it, there are a shit ton of beers on tap and a new cask was being tapped but she took our drink orders and had to keep coming back with new info (2 beers were out and the cask was an apple & almond stout - that info took 3 trips to our table) The food was mediocre and our waitress tried to joke off the bad service but all in all it was really underwhelming time. I am not a huge beer fan, there are a few types I enjoy, but that makes me not the target market. The food wasn't memorable. My friends who are beer fanatics loved this place, so keep that in mind. It's my day off. I went for a beer and some lunch. It's quiet here, maybe 25 customers. I was one of two people seated at the bar. As I walk in, past 3 staff, not one of them greets me. Hardly welcoming. The bartender was unfriendly and bordering on rude. I came to eat, drink and give you my money...is that an inconvenience? I am a full time bartender at a busy West End bar. I have patience and simple expectations, and I tip better than most customers. Not on this day! The burger was good, not great, and the beer was cold. I don't really like how 1 hamburger and 1 beer comes to $22.89, but at that price I'd expect a smile, and maybe, just maybe, a pleasant demeanour. Last weekend we decided to finally go check it out.. only to be disappointed. The food at St Augustine's is nothing to write home about - semi-pricey pub-style fare, it's the same crap you can get at pretty much any cultureless restaurant in Vancouver. But you aren't going there for the food. St Augustine's has a selection of microbrews on tap that is unrivalled in the neighbourhood. Every Monday they have cask night, where they tap a cask and sell pints of it til it's out. It's a great way to enjoy a craft beer. They also have nightly beer specials, and they offer a four-beer taster that's the same price as a pint. This awesome feature, though unlisted on the menu, allows customers to quell a bit of that overwhelmed feeling that comes from reading a double-sided, tightly-packed beer menu. For the beer connoisseur of East Van, St Augustine's is a necessary stop. Oh, by the way, vegans, the veggie burger patty has cheese in it. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I still miss The End Cafe... the atmosphere, prices, and chili were unbeatable! So my view of St. Augustine's was a little grumpy to start with. That said, I was super excited for a pub which touted such a HUGE array of craft beers. The atmosphere has become a little too almost-sport-bar-y for me over the past year or so; the noise level has increased, the tables feel really tightly packed in side by side, and there's usually some obnoxious sport playing loudly on the tvs. This is not a reverent haven for craft beer lovers, it's a sports bar that has an amazing beer selection. The beer choices are always absolutely amazing - top to bottom, all the beers are well picked and interesting. I do have an issue with the pricing - I imagine that they are priced based on how far they've travelled to get there, but I really object to paying $8.25 for a 4.8% beer... call me old-fashioned, but I like my prices based on alcohol content: 5%? $5! 8%? $7! That makes more sense to me, and means that I usually scour the menu for something that sounds delicious, but also matches more closely to my preferred price to percent ratio! The food is so-so. It always seems a little expensive for what you get, although I enjoy the flavours. I do want a little more in the way of standard pub food for somewhere that has a very pub-like atmosphere - give me a juicy slab of pizza overflowing with toppings! I don't always want a super thin, crispy flatbread with caramelized fig and goat cheese - sometimes I just want something basic and yummy. I like St. Augustine's well enough, but it's never my first choice, despite being so conveniently located. read more

Shannon B. introduced me to St. Augustine's a few weeks back when we met up for some drinks. I've been slowly learning more and more about beer and which types of beer I enjoy in the last year, so browsing their drink menu was rather exciting. I tried the paddle with the 4 samples of your choice. My favourites were the Fat Tug IPA which has a wonderfully strong grapefruit scent and a great citrus flavour, and the Valley Trail Chestnut Ale by Whistler Brewing. OH MY GAWD. This is the best beer I've ever had in my life, and oddly, it smells like baked goods. I was absolutely heartbroken to discover they were out of it the last time I was there, so I ordered some GIB Winter Ale and felt a little better. I love the big screen that shows you how much of each draft beer they have left. So handy, I feel dumb for not having noticed it the first time I was there. On my last visit the other week I had pretty much the best waitress ever. She was so funny and helped me gang up on my friend and tease him. Awesome. Another thing - I usually HATE yam fries, but whatever the yam fries at St. Augustine's are seasoned with totally works for me. I am of the opinion that fries should be salty, no matter what kind of root vegetable they are made of. These were salty. They were AWESOME. read more

However, if you do eat the meat - I saw a fried chicken plate go by that looked like something you might be into. Sweet Jesus the beers! So many choices! I find myself lost in the menu sometimes and need to just close my eyes and point. Or get the paddle - try 4 beers on tap for the price of a pint! Everybody wins. They have daily specials and cask night on Mondays. I like to pretend I am a beer aficionado when I am in here. This place is always bonkers busy. Who are these people and why don't they have jobs?! Go to work so I can have your table! So get there early, especially on game day fools! The service is usually really good. Beer is awesome. St Augustines has awesome beer. Therefore St. Augustines is awesome. I consider myself something of a beer connoisseur, and the seasonal list keeps me coming back. The sampler option is a great way to get through the seasonal taps in a sitting (with a friend of course), and the regular selection is stocked with my favourite beers (Fruli, Gulden Draak, Crannog Ales). I didn't have to ask the server much as the menu described the beers rather well, but they were able to answer questions I did ask. Much better than some other pubs where the question "what craft beers do you have" is answered with a rather dismal list of pale ales, bleh. If you really need to eat, or if you're a cicerone in training, the food is pretty good. Not a great selection and a little pricey... If I wanted great food though, I'd go to a place that is dedicated to making great food. For what St. Augustines does, they do it well, for Vancouver. read more

Steve and I wanted to hit a few breweries in Vancouver but time was against us on our crazy walking spree through town. We kept getting on or off at the wrong times and were getting chad umbrellas up for confused with what we were seeing. St. Augustine's 49th Parallel Brewing and I thought it was actually the brewery itself. We were done running around by this time of the day and we just went in to see if they had 49th Parallel on tap just to kill two birds with one stone. To our advantage they did have some of their beer on tap as well as another brewery we wanted to go to, 33 Acres! So we just "called it good" and got beer from those breweries here, killing two birds with one stone. I got a Grapefruit Beer from 49th which was excellent and Steve got a nice, light Golden Ale from 33 Acres, both were excellent beers! I have to tip my hat to St. Augustine's for carrying local brews and having such an impressive list of beers on tap as well! You saved us from getting more tired out than we already were! read more
