We really loved this restaurant! The food is great as is the service. The decor is super homey and the staff is very warm and friendly. We had: Swordfish - totally delicious Grilled Lobster extra stuffed - very good! Grilling a lobster in its shell gives it a delicious smokey flavor and it wasn't dry at all Hamburger - my daughter loved it Crab cakes with corn on the cob - my other daughter loved it Mudslide Cake with ice cream and fudge - very good All the entrees came with salad and rice or baked potato. Definitely not what it used to be. This has been a family favorite for years. Tonight, though, we were charged $80 for a steak that was almost entirely fat and gristle. When we complained, the server spoke with management. They offered 1 free dessert (maybe a $10 value?). When we declined because there wasn't a dessert anyone was interested in having, they simply gave us the bill, charging us the full amount for the steak. We essentially paid $80 for nothing! So this is a mixed review. I really enjoyed my grilled lobster. It was delicious! My husband got the surf and turf. He really enjoyed the shrimps but the steak was bland, small, and poor quality, but the price doesn't reflect this. I was ok for the kids but I wouldn't say it was overly kid friendly either. After passing this restaurant's outside stand dozens of times and wondering how good their food is or isn't, I stopped by to sample a pint of their fried clams. ($20+). My assessment is it seemed like they were cooked by a beginner. The whole bellied clams were very small, the strips tough and the crust was thick and looked like something I might find in CT. We live in Edgartown four to five months out of every year, beginning in July. Compared to Oak Bluffs, Edgartown's restaurant take-out scene is quite limited. There are the few high-end restaurants in downtown Edgartown that are open for the season. For in-restaurant dining, they are first rate. When they close, Edgartown's choices are very narrow. The Square Rigger's menu is substantially seafood oriented. That would be fine if the offerings were more imaginative and tasty. There is no effort to use local produce, herbs or other chef-inspired ingredients to make the menu offerings more flavorful. For example, the salmon is crying out for a tasty marinade--it is so bland that it's boring, even with lemon. There are no fresh vegetables on the menu! Summer on the Vineyard provides a bounty of fresh vegetables and the only things on this menu are mashed potatoes, string beans and sad carrots. No fresh, imaginative types of lettuce are used in their limited salad offerings. The Square Rigger does offer fresh seafood but unimaginatively prepared. Finally, the pricing for this dull menu is exorbitant. It's like being stuck in a hotel with an over-priced menu. Square Rigger should borrow a page from Lookout Tavern and Offshore Ale for taste, imagination and pricing. read more

We've been coming to the island for years and I never knew until this year that this was a fully functioning restaurant and not just a take out spot. We ordered dinner from there and I got two stuffed lobsters. They were absolutely amazing! The stuffing seemed to be made out of Ritz crackers and lobster meat. In fact, I was finding full lobster claw meat in the mix. I'm looking forward to trying some of the other tasty looking items on this menu. This may turn into one of my favorites. read more

We arrived about 30 minutes before the restaurant opened, but the owner welcomed us in for an early lunch. We were fortunate to have found this gem of an eatery, as everything from the food to the service, was top notch! The clam chowder was absolutely perfect, as was the pulled pork BBQ sandwich! Best meal I had on the Vineyard, BY FAR. Crazy fun fact, they have a lot of odd and DELICIOUS salad dressings, give those a try! Also the serve a little mini loaf of bread at the beginning that is delicious and fresh out of the oven! I have a gluten allergy and the chef and server were not only very knowledgable and cautious about it, but they had an immediate solution whenever I came across something with gluten. My husband and his friend had the filet mignon and there's only one way to describe it... WOW. One ordered medium and one medium rare and they were both cooked to perfection. They came with a bearnaise sauce (which I usually don't like) that was KILLER! I'm not a big fan of sauces with steaks (I feel if it's a good steak, it doesn't need sauce) but it was served on the side and was absolutely delicious. My friend and I both had the Bouillabaisse, but we had two different versions which was fun. Because I had told the server that I had a gluten allergy, she let me know that the chef makes that dish in the same way but with some different ingredients for the sauce. The regular version is a tomato based broth, which was delicious. Mine was a garlic and oregano based broth and it was EVEN BETTER! This should definitely be on the menu!!!! That dish was one of the best meals I have ever eaten! Our server was Brittney and she was amazing. So helpful, SO attentive, SO sweet, and super funny! Very disappointing dinner at first time after they reopened for the season. I'm hoping it's because they need time to get in the groove. The drinks were great, well prepared. The clams casino were delicious. The prices are outrageous for what they offer. The Captain's Cut Prime Rib was $98.00!!!. Fine but it only comes with a limited selection of either a Caesar Salad(bottled dressing, boxed croutons, not an anchovy offered) and pasty mashed potatoes or bland white rice. The baked stuffed lobster was $78.00. It was a small (maybe 1.5 lb.) with very little stuffing. It was over cooked and very dry. Very disappointing. The chef came over to ask why I didn't eat it and volunteered to me that it looked so dry. He then offered to give us half off the price. We will see if that comes true. I am sad this old standard restaurant is so off balance. With the abundance of great produce on this island, it would be nice if they incorporated some in the menu. If I have only one dinner on MV, this is where I go - the best lobster presentation on the island (grilled with extra lobster meat) in an unpretentious atmosphere. They also offer salmon, prime rib, and other grilling specialties. The Square Rigger is one of the oldest restaurants on MV tracing its history back to the early 1800s. In the winter of 1966, I had a dinner here when it was only one of three restaurants, as I recall, that was open in the winter months. About 30 years later it was purchased by Doreen and Tony Rezendes who own and operate the restaurant today. Located at Edgartown's "Triangle", the Square Rigger has parking for patrons which, in Edgartown in the summer, is worth something! Geez. I must have driven by this place for years and only recently stopped in this December for dinner. Well I missed out on many evenings of great dinners at this place. Since it was my first visit I kept in simple ordering their sirloin steak which was flavorful and cooked perfect. I was taken back by the size of the baked potato. It was very small but was also good. The dinner came with a side salad and a loaf of warm bread. My server was very friendly. We laughed and had a great conversation during my visit and I was happy to leave her a generous tip. All and all a fine dinner at the Square Rigger. I will return very soon. read more

First and foremost, you can order via delivery on www.mvtakeout.com. This makes it super easy for visitors without a vehicle. Keep in mind there's a $16 delivery charge. However from west tisbury it's worth the cost. Try getting a taxi for less. Uber might be a possibility. I ordered a burger, mushroom, onion and cheese, fries and a pint of quahog chowder. The burger was perfectly cooked with a proper amount of condiments. It was rather large! Fries were fries. The drive to me might have taken away some of their crispness. I would highly recommend the burger. I wouldn't call myself a chowder pro my any means. So keep in mind this is just my opinion. From a thickness standpoint it was just right, not thin just certainly not corn starch thick. The potatoes were bitesized and tender. The flavor was spot on. Perfect creaminess with a touch of tang. The quahogs were tender and flavorful. However, I wish there was just a bit more clam in the soup. That would by my only complaint. Otherwise, I would have given 5 stars. This place isn't cheap but I certainly think it's better than some of the other options on the island. Having the option for delivery really makes it a no brainier. read more

For a beach-side, no frills-type of joint, TSR serves up FLAWLESS lobster. LOBSTER ROLLS and CHOWDA. Holy Jesus. Lobster roll was just under $15- and not huge but enough; lobster is rich! TSR blesses with fresh, delectable, tender in that stringy way, juicy and sweet lobster. With just a bit of mayo and black pepper, in a simple white bread bun; perfection. Dorothy W says it well- this place is classically New England circa 1970 (think: a better version of Ye Old Oyster House in Boston), from its somewhat bland decor to its extensive seafood menu where everything can be cooked either in butter or cream (I do think there are a few "cajun spice" options if you're feeling adventurous). The meal starts with a warm loaf of bread served on a cutting board, and a plate of simple salad (very large greens, shredded carrots, and a few croutons). Everything we sampled was tasty- the scallops (cooked in butter) were delicious, the salmon (served with a creamy sauce), the very creamy clam chowder, and so on. And all the dishes were served with the veggie of the day -- yesterday: corn on the cob. The lobster roll with warm butter was our favorite. The location of this spot is great-- you can swing by here while you are out riding your bike or on the way to (or from) the beach. I've been to MV for years. My bride and I honeymooned there 25 years ago. We return every year for our anniversary. As it was a special occassion we dined at the Rigger. We were warmly greeted and felt very welcome. Service was perfection as was the French campagne. A hot freshly baked loaf of bread was delivered. It was great. Now on to the food. It was good but not great. I had their speciality dish that is a split grilled extra stuffed lobster. I looked beautiful. However it was overcooked and the generous portion of lobster meat tasted old. The bride had a special that was a ribeye with lobster casserole. We assumed it would be grilled but it was a thin slice of prime rib. It was basically raw and served at room temperature. The lobster casserole looked great but the lobster tasted day old at least. I will confess that I ate here raw rib and I was in heaven. I love raw meat. I know, that's weird. Two stars for the food and one for the great service. Prehaps the many large takeout volume distracted the two cooks in the open kitchen. I wish this Vineyard staple was better. read more

My favorite dish is the Lobster Newberg - complete creamy/lobstery/flaky goodness! Another top seller is the prime rib. I will start off my saying that you should call to make a reservation even on Tuesday. We got there at 7pm and was told we couldn't be seated inside until 8:30 but they had take out and picnic tables outside of we wanted to eat sooner. We did take them up on this offer and was also able to order drinks from the bar. We sat drinking our cocktails and waiting nearly 30 minutes before my boyfriend asked about our food. We were told it would be ready soon. Another 10 minutes and we looked inside to see two seats at the bar. We took them and were told they would bring our food to us. Another 20 minutes went by before we got our first dish and 5 minutes before we had to ask for the second. When we finally got our food, I can say it was a pleasant surprise that both dishes were hot. I ordered the seafood casserole and my boyfriend the whole belly fried clam plate. My seafood was tender, the creamy sherry sauce was perfectly seasoned (I'm a cream sauce snob). The clams were also tender and the cole slaw delicious. Alison was our bartender. She was a delight. Although it really was so busy in there she kept up with her orders and never looked frazzled. She even put the Red Sox game on during all this. She make me a watermelon martini which I highly recommend. Dana, the head chef and owner came out to us asking about our food and offered us a dessert for our long wait.
